.

Hi,

I start a new series of blogs with educational vocation who will be easy to follow as they take only +/- 5 minutes and by following them and by applying my advice you will become a champion in IT-Security 😉

.Learning IT-Security

.

What we already learned in Part1 + Part2 + Part3 + Part4 + Part5:

.

The browser, such as: Internet Explorer [IE], Mozilla FirefoxGoogle ChromeSafari + … is the entrance portal for malware. You use your browser to navigate Internet and if your browser and add-ons are not updated they might lead you to a “drive-by-download“; thus meaning you infect your computer by only visiting a web site!!!

.

.

Continuing in the mentality of my 5 min tutorials to get smart for IT-Security https://gustmees.wordpress.com/category/get-smart-with-5-minutes-tutorials/ I will present to you more valuable courses and tutorials and some talking about on How-To…

.

As I said it already in a previous blog post, not all tutorials should be technical, so isn’t this one again. It will give you some ideas in general and those ideas will get deepened each other in next 5 min smart tutorials, here below is a short overview…

.

There is a need for following actions, which of course need to be FREE for the whole population:

What we already learned in Part1 + Part2 + Part3 + Part4:

You use your browser to navigate Internet and if your browser and add-ons are not updated they might lead you to a “drive-by-download“; thus meaning you infect your computer by only visiting a web site!!!

.

.

Very important and what most of people don’t know and don’t realize:

  • Any installed software on your computer must be updated as older versions might have a vulnerability who could get exploited by the bad guys to take control over your computer!
  • Not every web site you are visiting and/or who you find in the search results of search Engines are trustworthy and/or secure!
  • ===> You can ALSO infect your computer without being connected to Internet! Any connected USB and other storage device (CD, DVD, Flash-Cards, Floppy Disk…) who is infected will also infect your computer if not protected!!! <===
  • Not ONLY the reflexes to stay secure as told worldwide by organisations and Education do help for a secure Internet, Internet-Safety tips are a NEED, for sure but there is more: the NEED to secure the computers!

.

Let’s go for part 5: Not Only Internet-Safety/ALSO IT-Security!

.

A bit of theory. If you don’t like, switch to first screenshot shown below to start straight of for practice. But it might be good (important) to know that theory, take your time, please 😉

.

And don’t forget this reminder, please!

.

 What you MUST KNOW!

      • Automatic Windows Update must be enabled
      • Third Party Programs are responsible for 78% of vulnerabilities!!! What are Third Party Applications (Programs)? Knowing that third party programs are vulnerable also, we must update them also! Use SECUNIA PSI to update automatically third party programs https://secunia.com/
      • Browsers (ALL) need to get updated!
  • The weakest link in the Security Chain is the human! If you don’t respect certain advice you will get tricked by the Cyber-Criminals!

===> NOBODY is perfect! A security by 100% doesn’t exist! <===

.

Not any tutorial should be technological but also based on life experience… The practice lived…

Today, in this 5 minutes tutorial we will ONLY talk a bit, no technical advice for change. This is necessary sometimes

The author Gust MEES is online since 1998 and was given courses to adult people, seniors and youth, helping women to find a job again and preparing them to have necessary ICT knowledge to get a job in an officeprimary school classes as also to teachers in primary school more than 8 years long and this on an 8 hours a day and this alone…

..

Normal classes were 10 people with different ages from 16-79 (10 computers) and with primary schools and teachers it was 20 people (2 persons per computer), where he gave the learners also the opportunity to bring their computers and Laptops to the learning place.

.

People who wished so could also have checked their computers and Laptops for security issues and I cleaned those devices from malware and I installed FREE security programs on those computers. After a few days people came back and I taught them about the security issues (screenshots provided with a report in their language [FR, DE, EN]) and showed them how to use the FREE programs

.

From 100 computers and Laptops checked there was “ONLY 1” computer, and this from a male person aged 69 who followed my IT-Security courses carefully, the Windows computer was “clean” and not infected!!!

.

Other lived example: women (young and elder) which I gave courses and/or help about ICT for Office work had to write their CV’s and brought me their passport photo from a professional Photo Service in the North of my country, where the photo was stored on a Flash-Card from a photo machine. By scanning first that Flash-Card on my computer with my installed antivirus suite  (Norton Internet Security) and also with an anti-malware I found malicious trojans on the Flash-Card! This happens 5 times in 2 years, even after I gave a phone call to that so called professional Photo Service to tell them that their computer is infected!

So, thus meaning, e.g. above, this Photo Service infected probably hundred of customers with trojans (Trojan Horses malware) and their customers (as their Flash-Cards were infected) infected also any other computer where those Flash-cards were connected to. This could result to a mass infection of computers, even by being not connected to Internet!!!

.

This shows the impact of not having the right knowledge about the need to install security programs on a computer, even today also on a Mac!

Check about Mac malware here: Nobody is perfect!

.

Today (May 2012) we are are talking and reading about Cyber-Security, attacks on Government web sites, Cyber-Crime, National Security, Cyber-War, Cyber-Warfare and much more… Check links below to learn more:

.

..

MUST KNOW: once a computer is infected with malware it can infect also thousands of different other computers through Internet! So we all have a certain responsibility to the “Internet Community”, making sure not to infect others by applying best protection on our computers!

.

So, this was a bit life experience which I think is necessary for learners to understand the context of IT-Security! In next 5 minutes tutorial we will talk about “Visual IT-Security” where I will try to make IT-Security visual to you with real life examples. Stay tuned, coming soon 😉

.

We can have best “Internet-Safety” knowledge, but when our computer is not protected we will face serious problems and the most important; once our computer infected we infect also our contacts and the Internet-Community! We need to protect our Community!!! Don’t let Cyber-crime take over Internet, otherwise we will have a “MadMax-Scenario” in a couple of years, no need for that! But we have to protect ourselves and to share the acquired knowledge over Social Medias (Hashtag is #SoMe), that’s our role in Education, follow it please, thx!

.===> Internet-Safety is similar to the traffic rules in real world and IT-Security is the security of the vehicle! Bad breaks on a vehicle = similar to bad security on a computer! You will hurt Community one day, think on that please 😉 <===

  • Not every web site you are visiting and/or who you find in the search results of search Engines are trustworthy and/or secure!

.

Let’s go for part 4: Surf more secure-which web sites to trust?

.

A bit of theory. If you don’t like, switch to first screenshot shown below to start straight of for practice. But it might be good (important) to know that theory, take your time, please 😉

.

First a reminder and the most important to know to have best protection on your computer:

 What you MUST KNOW!

      • Automatic Windows Update must be enabled
      • Third Party Programs are responsible for 78% of vulnerabilities!!! What are Third Party Applications (Programs)? Knowing that third party programs are vulnerable also, we must update them also! Use SECUNIA PSI to update automatically third party programs https://secunia.com/

.

Secure Surfing Behavior

.

One can’t trust any web site and any content published on Internet, don’t be naive! It’s the same as on real world, there are bad guys and good guys, but how to find out? My favorite FREE Software to make me my Online Life easier and more secure as they show me which web sites are trustworthy and which web sites I shouldn’t visit at all because they are malicious and could infect my computer is McAfee SiteAdvisor!!! But don’t forget also, there is and never will be a 100% security!

.

Tip: you may use different similar software and add-ons together, there is no problem to do so. I use McAfee SiteAdvisor, WOT and as I have installed Symantec Internet Security (security suite) I get also their results shown… Other Security-Suites from different security manufacturers are also proposing similar solutions…

.

First look what happens when clicking on any link without knowing if that web site is trustworthy and/or secure (not malicious), watch the video below please.

.

..

McAfee SiteAdvisor™ software

McAfee SiteAdvisor™ software

McAfee SiteAdvisor™, software is an award-winning, free browser plug-in that gives safety advice about Websites before you click on a risky site. These site ratings are based on tests conducted by McAfee using an army of computers that look for all kinds of threats (detailed below). The result is a guide to Web safety. The SiteAdvisor software is free, easy to install and even easier to use. And it doesn’t collect any personally identifiable information.

.

===> Check out here for downloadMcAfee SideAdvisor: http://home.mcafee.com/store/free-services <===

.

Let me show an practice example here with a request on a Search Engine (Google) with search word “serialz“, I choose this word to show you ALSO the danger of trying to use illegal software, as you will get a “special bonus“, an infection of your computer with a “Trojan“, “backdoor” and other “malware” while downloading them and/or by using these not serious and illegal services, but check yourself by “learning by doing“; search first without having installed McAfee SiteAdvisor (but without clicking the proposed links, otherwise your computer will be infected) and then install the FREE service from McAfee SiteAdvisor and make the same search, screenshot below shows you the results obtained with different protection software installed (WOT, McAfee SiteAdvisor)…

.

Google search result screenshot

.

First result found in Google shows a web site which is detected as malicious, so don’t use the web sites marked wit a red dot!

.

By moving the cursor over that “red dot” you will get more information about the state of security of that web site, so NEVER click on such links!!!

.

McAfee SiteAdvisor in practice

.

This works ALSO for photos, e.g. search for “justin bieber”, check out screenshot below please.

.

McAfee SiteAdvisor in practice

.

You will see again this “red dot” on right hand photo, NEVER click on such photos and don’t download them also!!!

.

See Part1: browsers https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2012/05/02/get-smart-with-5-minutes-tutorialsit-securitypart-1-browsers/

.

Very important and what most of people don’t know and don’t realize: Any installed software on your computer must be updated as older versions might have a vulnerability who could get exploited by the bad guys to take control over your computer!

.

===> No “Firewall” and no “Antivirus” will protect you against that! <===

.

.

Find where the vulnerabilities are by using a FREE online service from one of the best antivirus manufacturers, from F-Secure.

.

Here we go:

Run F-Secure HealthCheck http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/protection/free-online-tools/free-online-tools

Get smart with 5 minutes tutorials/IT-Security/Part 1: browsers

Hi,

I start a new series of blogs with educational vocation who will be easy to follow as they take only +/- 5 minutes and by following them and by applying my advice you will become a champion in IT-Security 😉

.Learning IT-Security

.

Let’s go for part 1: browsers

Browsers and plugins age the gateway to malware, check below, please, what and who was on the TOP10 in 2014.

.

Browser-Plugins-Vulnerabilities-TOP10-2014

Browser-Plugins-Vulnerabilities-TOP10-2014

Click the above image, please, to access the full report.

.

A bit of theory. If you don’t like, switch to first screenshot shown below to start straight of for practice. But it might be good (important) to know that theory, take your time, please 😉

.

The browser, such as: Internet Explorer [IE], Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari + … is the gateway for malware. You use your browser to navigate Internet and if your browser and add-ons are not updated they might lead you to a “drive-by-download“; thus meaning you infect your computer by only visiting a web site!!!

.

===> No “Firewall” and no “Antivirus” will protect you against that! <===

 .

The practice now: Check your browser and add-ons for updates!

.

This is very easy to check online, without installation of any program! Use Qualys BrowserCheck who will perform a security analysis of your browser and its plugins to identify any security issues.

When using Twitter and when you want to know more about IT-Security and Social Media and its best use you should know this first:

.

.

Best Hashtags for IT-Security are: #itsecurity #cybersecurity #Infosec #security #Internetsafety #Onlinesafety

.

Very important: make the community strong!

.

Build a strong community by sharing the learned knowledge to others through “Social Media” such as Twitter, Facebook and others…! This is very important, as more people know about it as more yourself profit from it; thus meaning: less infected computers on Internet is less trouble around. Let me explain visually by terms you understand already, no technological explaining.

.

If a person is infected by a virus it will infect also other persons, OK? Same for infected computers, they will infect also ALL other computers trough contacts, OK!? So, as more computers are protected and if people who know how to stay protected share that knowledge as more as possible, the risk of getting infected will get reduced considerably!

Social Distancing Monitor with Alarm, Arduino NANO and I2C LCD2004 Display

In previous tutorial we were using an LCD1602 display, this time we will use an LCD2004 display which gives us the opportunity to display on four (4) lines. That enables us to display more accurate text.

The wiring is exactly the same as already mentioned in previous tutorial, there is ONLY to make a few changes in the code, please check:

The complete Code fr an LCD1602 display could get downloaded in “.doc” format below.

Download and open the document, copy it and bring it in a NEW Sketch of the Arduino IDE. Upload it to the Arduino Nano and have fun with it!

SO, once uploaded we will need to change some code to make it work for an LCD2004 display, we will see how below.

.

.

.

Well, as you can see there isn’t a lot of changes, easy!! A 5 minutes project 😉 Once you have changed the mentioned lines, upload the code again.

And IF you want to START straight on, here below is the code in .doc format:

ELEGOO SMART ROBOT CAR KIT V3.0

First impressions

Elegoo Smart Robot Car Kit for Arduino.

.

The Kit is delivered in a well organized plastic box with a poster inside of all the parts with description and a CD with the PDF Manual, Code and Libraries.

The manual in PDF format is actually very well documented an nobody should have problems to follow the instructions.

There are even the necessary tools for assembling provided, such as different screwdrivers.

.

.

Assembling and cabling

Assembling part 1.

.

.

.

First steps, assembling… Actually it isn’t that difficult, only problem encountered are 2mm screws and nuts, I will continue tomorrow with a magnifying glass and more light to handle it (OH my eyes…). There was some fight with screws and nuts ranging from 1.6mm (Ultrasonic Sensor) to 2mm (Servo fixing) where I needed to use special tools, was a bit stressing to work with such tiny things.

.

.

.

.

.

ToolsFor solving the problems encountered with the tiny screws and nuts, I used a “magnetic telescope” for the 1.6 mm nuts and a “spring-loaded tongs” for the 3 mm nuts.

The cabling was very easy and the rest of the assembling as well as it is VERY well described in the Assembling document (in PDF). Next step is to control (End-Control) again the cabling to make sure that everything is correctly connected and THEN the Coding

The documentation is available in different languages…

Charger with US plugWhen living in Europe, make sure to make your order on the national platform from Amazon, I made my order in the US and I got the charger delivered with an US plug! Amazon Germany delivers it with an “Euro Plug”! <===>

I made the End Control, checking if the connections were made right, it was.

.

Assembling part 2

.

Assembling the two black plates and the wheels was easy peasy as well…

The Coding

Manual on CD

Click the image, please, to enlarge.

Opening the Manual NOW to proceed for the first lesson “Make the car move on [Auto-GO]”. Very easy to follow, it worked in less than 5 minutes. Unplugging the USB cable from the laptop, will it work!?

Taking the car away from the desk and putting it on the floor, switching the Power-supply on and it runs around by avoiding any obstacles while they are detected by the “Ultrasonic Sensor”, it’s FUN watching <===> Success Trying out NEXT lesson now…

The courses are made very easy: plug the USB cable to the computer, open the course in the Arduino IDE, upload it into the IDE, save it in your folder, unplug the USB cable, take the car away from the desk and put it on the floor, switch it on and enjoying…

Well, that’s a Kit which everybody can try and have success, give it a try and enjoy “Coding”, “Maker” activities…

WHAT Is eSkills? WHY Does The “e” Stand Before?

Manifesto: get an overview of challenges & opportunities outlined by experts .

[Start text from the MANIFESTO 2015] Much has been written about the digital skills gap and whether Europe is falling behind in the race for digital talent. After some spectacular declines in ICT education enrollments and graduate numbers in the first years of the new millennium, the European Commission developed a long-term e-skills strategy to reverse the worrying trend. Now, and since 2010, the number of ICT students is growing again. The good news today is that there are signs that the rate of growth is quicker than expected. [END text from the MANIFESTO 2015].

If I Would OWN a Company, WHAT Skills Would I Expect From MY Workers In 21st Century!?

If I Would OWN a Company, WHAT Skills Would I Expect From MY Workers In 21st Century!?

programmerman-animatedBecause of ICT there are sooooo many NEW possibilities to use with the computers and the internet. Just imagine that a company owner should employ people for each special application, NO WAY! (S)He wouldn’t have enough money to afford it!!! So it is necessary that <===> the 21st Century worker/employee would be an all-rounder! <===> An all-rounder WHO comes straight out of school and from whom the business/workforce could profit directly!!!

WHAT would be these skills the business/workforce will need!?

First of ALL it SHOULD be an AWARENESS about the Cyber Security problems WHO could happen and WHO could destroy a company and/or a companies reputation! <===> Forewarned is Forearmed! <===> is the BEST protection as it is anchored in the mind! WE will discuss this in the next chapter in depth!

Sometimes it is necessary as well to edit some text in a Word (or else Open Source) document and to use ALSO photos in these documents: SO… WE need to have knowledge about <===> Copyright <===>, photo editing and publishing as well as the how-to to transform these documents into a PDF.

A company, to stay competitive, needs ALSO to know WHAT is going on on the global market and needs to be up-to-date with latest NEWS, WHAT would be BETTER than making <===> curation <===> about it and to share these knowledge internally in the company through an intranet!? SO, my employees SHOULD know how to make curation which THEY could use as well for THEIR OWN learning by using a PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management <===> https://globaleducationandsocialmedia.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/pkm-personal-professional-knowledge-management/.

AND as WE as a company need to be up-to-date by using ICT WE SHOULD ALSO being able to create a blog from where WE inform OUR customers about WHAT is NEW in OUR company and eventually report ALSO about warnings, awareness about some products, as well as through OUR blog informing OUR customers through a NEWSLETTER! Those are part of a 21st Century orientated company!

Learn more about blogs:

AND didn’t WE forgot something!? WHAT’s about <===> Social Media <===>!? WE as a competitive company SHOULD ALSO be present on Facebook AND on Twitter, isn’t it!? SO… OUR employees SHOULD know ALSO to handle it:

Priority: My Employees SHOULD be Cyber Security Savvy

programmerman2First of ALL it SHOULD be an AWARENESS about the Cyber Security problems WHO could happen and WHO could destroy a company and/or a companies reputation! <===> Forewarned is Forearmed! <===> is the BEST protection as it is anchored in the mind! It is called <===> Proactive THINKing!

Searching on Google and/or on other Search Engines (allowed in the company or NOT) will happen and could infect the computer and EVEN the whole company IT infrastructure WHEN an employee doesn’t know WHAT s(he) is doing!!! SO… Better is that the employees know WHAT are the dangers and my company as well SHOULD have installed on ALL the computers different awareness and protection software, here my advice:

.

How Could EDUcation Teach Students To Get These skills!?

Teaching the profession that....

In a modern, very quick changing world because of ICT, EDUcation MUST follow to provide the business/workingforce with workers/employees WHO have the necessary skills, EVEN WITHOUT knowing WHAT next jobs would be! MOST say that it isn’t possible and a BIG challenge, BUT a challenge WHO actually is MORE easy by following my advice by reading my blog posts:

Problems With Innovation In Schools!?

programmerman2In case IF (MOST probably have…) YOU would have problems to GET the necessary as mentioned in my posts made into action in YOUR EDU-System, read the below advice:

.

Collaboration, Team-Work AND Global Collaboration

sharing-iconAs mentioned already in the above infographic there is a need to work in a team, collaboration AND Global-Collaboration (with manufacturers, re-sellers…) are a MUST! EVEN in the schools Global-EDUcation is a MUST to make the students, learners ready to get used to it 😉

I made several Global-Collaboration on blogging for <===> LEARNing To LEARN <===> about <===> Digital CitiZENship and Cyber Security <===> with  and , check below please:

WHEN being involved to work in a team, WE need to get used to it as well as to THE letter “C” in ICT, which means <===> Communication <===> as BOTH are part of an efficient work relationship which is necessary for the wealth of a company!

Learn more:

IF EDUcation Doesn’t Give ME WHAT I Want, How Could I Coach MY Workers To LEARN

Well,as already mentioned above, my advice is STILL THE SAME, please check:

programmerman-animated.

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for beingUp-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

Check out my blog posts:
