Actually (January 2020 and even before…) there are a lot of warnings from Cyber-Security experts and EVEN from the FBI concerning Smart-homes and its connected devices:
SO NOW, after having bought a Smart-TV and other so-called smart devices which are connecting to the internet, WHAT to do? First of all: do YOU really need it, as nearly any devices are getting sold with IoT capabilities? IF NOT, WHAT to do?
Before connecting the power:
Check your Router settings and block any unknown devices!
IF you are able to access your IT device, change straight the manufacturer password; give it a STRONG password!
Concerning passwords: I recommend to use a Password-Manager such as:
With a Password-Manager you just need to remember a Master-Password and ALL other Passwords will get generated with a STRONG Password from the software itself!!

Keywords necessary for me to create this blog post: Routers, Passwords, authorization, IoT, Smart Home, Smart TVs, vigilance, connected stuff, Responsibility, Cyber-Hygiene, Digital CitiZENship,
In our previous tutorials we were using already the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module and we discussed about “Security“, “Cyber-Security” issues while using “IoT“, “Internet of Things” and the importance that the router MUST be protected by a NEW password and NOT ALLOW to let connect any devices to our router/internet, unless we decide to let them (ONLY our owns) connect!
It was a bit a difficult procedure to find out the “MAC Address” of the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module, isn’t it?! Well there is a more easy way to find out with a little Sketch.
Please check the tutorial and copy the Sketch from:
Now it is much more easy to run a project with a NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module. Connect your module to the computer through the USB cable, chose the board in the Arduino IDE and upload the sketch. Check below the how-to, please.
Click the image, please, to enlarge.
.
Please check again (I don’t want to reinvent the wheel…) the tutorial below who explains very well in detail:
Once having the “MAC Address” of our NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module we can now easily incorporate it into the allowed devices in our router.
.
NOW, click on the button “Add Wireless Device” as shown in above image.
.
.
A new window opens where you can add the new devices “MAC Address” which you wrote down before. Do so please and then click the button “OK“. Go back and have a look if the device is now in the authorized devices in your Network.
SO, now when you use a Sketch with “IoT” with the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module, the device is recognized and allowed in your Network!

First Steps with the ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module | Scrolling Text (Time, Temp., Humidity…) with 8×8 LED MATRIX
In our previous blog post (Tutorial…), we were playing around with a LED MATRIX <===> First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Scrolling Text with 8×8 LED MATRIX <===> and we will continue to use the LED MATRIX, but this time with a Wi-Fi connection. We will use the module “ESP8266” which you can purchase worldwide around as it is very popular and it costs ONLY 7.49 €. I ordered mine on Amazon in Germany:
Check the How-To on the video below @ 5:51 minutes.
.
Check the video below please who explains the first steps with the ESP8266:
.
.
Now that we have configured the ESP8266 in the Arduino IDE we need some other information which are necessary to implement into the code. It is the name of the Wi-Fi Network (SSID) and the Password for the Wi-Fi Network. AND a new device connecting to the router (the ESP8266) must GET allowed to do so, if your router is well configured for Cyber-Security! Thus meaning for Cyber-Security reasons: in the router security settings any device connecting to your Wi-Fi Network SHOULD NOT have access unless it is your own ones and unless you allow THEM to access!
.
My shown images from the Router are from a “FritzBox Router“, but it should be similar in other Routers!!
.
In the above image you see which devices are connected to your Network, to do so: open your router with your login and/or password and look under “Radio Network” (or similar). IF you don’t see your “ESP8266” in the Network while you run the code and it isn’t working does mean that your Network is well secured as it doesn’t allow any other device connecting to the Network!
Click above image, please, to enlarge.
.
You need then to give permission to the device to connect. To do so: Open the Security settings in your Router and click on “Allow all new wireless devices“. NOW, you will see that the “ESP8266” is part of the Network! Note down on a piece of paper its “MAC Address” and protect your Network again by clicking on “Do not allow new wireless devices“!!
.
Click on the image, please, to enlarge.
.
NOW, click on the button “Add Wireless Device” as shown in above image.
.
.
A new window opens where you can add the new devices “MAC Address” which you wrote down before. Do so please and then click the button “OK“. Go back and have a look if the device is now in the authorized devices in your Network.
Required:
SSID
WLAN Password
Acces authorization for the Wi-Fi
…
The Code for the ESP8266 and first try
I used a video tutorial in German from Switzerland as well as its Code for this project as it is very well explained. Even if you don’t understand German, you can follow step by step in the video:
.
.
While watching the video on YouTube, you will find the download link for the code, check below please:
.
.
You can find another interesting code here on the blog as well as the wiring diagram and a GREAT description (in German):
Unzip the code and install it by following the video instructions; check @ 8.30 minutes and follow step by step…
After everything is installed and the code is in the Arduino IDE you need to adapt the code to your needs: check video @ 10.36 minutes
Entering your Network name, the SSID
Entering the Network-Key; Check above Router images…
…
.
When you run the code for the first time: disconnect the two wires for the power supply (GND and VCC) as the LED Matrix will light all the dots and the power consumption will be by 1.5 Ampere; thus meaning the components, especially the chips will become hot, even could get overheated!! Once the Arduino IDE shows you that the code is uploaded reconnect them and it should work.
.
That’s it folks; now you can run the code and have fun! I takes a bit time before the code runs: first “Compiling Sketch…“, followed by “Uploading…” and “Done Uploading…” and the ESP8266 tries to connect with the Wi-Fi Network…
.
If everything was made correctly as described above you should receive now your personal weather data… FIRST the time will GET displayed for a couple of seconds (that period could GET changed by your settings in the code…)…
.
.
Then the scrolling text starts displaying the temperature, humidity, air pressure, rain risk in % and wind speed…
.
.
Stay tuned for next blog posts and enjoy it 😉
Have FUN with your “LEARNing-By-Doing project” and try out ALSO the other examples 😉

NEW Words, Trends to Know and to LEARN about in 21st Century
Are YOU feeling overwhelmed with strange words, NEW trends, when you are reading and following posts, tweets, articles about/and in Social Media!? Well, I can understand YOU!!! There are SO MUCH, if I wouldn’t do curation, I wouldn’t understand it anymore as well, to be honest! 😉 Through my daily curation I see it and I read those articles, from WHERE I learn a lot as an autodidact. WHEN there are some words which I DON’T understand I am going MOSTLY to Wikipedia to find its explication and if NOT sufficient, I use GOOGLE and other online resources to know MORE about it!
For ME it’s THE BEST way (Curation) to learn and to stay up-to-date with my Professional Development! I tried out a lot of different ways after being online since 1998 and believe me, please, it’s the fastes way to keep it UP! 😉 Through Curation I build up my <===> PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management from where I can use it in ANY of my blogs, twitter posts and other Social Media to share it to people willing to learn.
Let us FIRST have a look about WHAT Curation and PKM is (first stuff to read and bring into PracTICE) before WE continue with THE strange words and trends later:
SO, let’s have a look on some (actually a lot…) NEW words and trends in EDUcation and WHO will influence EDUcation below, as THEY are actually running in Real-World, let us START first with the words:
P.S.: The present words with NOT YET a link will get updated later, otherwise I wouldn’t finish this blog post! 😉
Dynamic Learning
Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With digital tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamic. This concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.
Through Curation, Social Media twitter and by building a PLN this is perfectly possible!
BTW : Did YOU actually realize that NOW it’s the PracTICE WHICH is dominating the Real-World before it EVEN is taught by EDUcation, a BIG CHANGE, isn’t it!!! Because of Entrepreneurship (bold actions…) the internet helped to CHANGE the world and flipped EDUcation to bring it MORE close to the needs of the workforce/Industry!!!
The NEW Pedagogy is MORE about the learners, students and to put THEM into the drivers seat; looking to find a Win-Win situation about THE How-To to GET THEM learning together in a team (EVEN outside the School-Cocoon with Social Media…) and to prepare THEM for the workforce/labor/industry by being able for <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> for a Life-Long Learning once out of school!

Through ICT the Real-World and especially the Virtual-World (both are influencing each other…) are changing quicker then WE can learn about, BUT WE must adapt to it and so must EDUcation! Therefore Universities must do research about the How-To to adapt and teaching about it… Luxembourg, a small country in Europe is doing so in September 2016, read more:
Luxembourg has already a “strategy to promote media literacy” as I got told in an interview, see image below please and click on the image to access the article.
.
Click the image please to access the article.
.
There is ALSO Finland WHO made a radical change to its EDUcation-Sytem, check below please: Finland uses <===> Phenomenon based learning
Meanwhile, before research finishes its studies, WE can already have a look on WHAT is NEW in Technology and WHAT probably would be of interest for EDUcation, as well as NEW Pedagogy Theories and NEW Trends:
Because of the internet and Social Media there is NOW ALSO a new way of learning through collaboration, Global Collaboration, Peer-To-Peer Learning, mentoring, coaching:
WHEN WE talk about “Entrepreneurship“, then WE MUST ALSO talking about “Blockchain and Bitcoin” as THEY are a Game-Changer in the future, check below please:
AND as WE are using ICT: internet with iPad, tablet, smartphones, laptops, PCs, Macs, small computers such as Arduino,Raspberry PI and Co, the “Internet of Things” WE MUST ALSO have basics knowledge of “CyberSecurity“, check below please:
MY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!
.
WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?
Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?
YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉
I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!
I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!
Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!
AND check my profile below as well, at the bottom of this blog post please! 😉

Cyber-Security And Privacy Knowledge As Skills In The 21st Century Are NOT Yet Enough Taught And Present, WHY!?
.
Did YOU realize already that WE are living in the 21st Century and that WE nearly ALL are using the so called NEW TECHNOLOGIES, the internet, the smartphone(s), laptops, computers, tablets, household goods who are connected to the internet, and this on a daily base!? Did YOU ever started THINKING about such consequences concerning YOUR Privacy and vulnerability to Cyber-Security!? As far as I know, from practice while talking to people, most people are NOT as nobody has given them advice, NOR were they taught about it in schools, and there is the problem!
In the digital age, as WE are living NOW in it, WE MUST learn on a daily base to adapt to its very quick change! Education can’t follow with that as it is and was almost years behind… It needs to have a ===> RETHINK <=== to catch up!
SO… By knowing this and accepting it ALSO (the most difficult, BUT…) WE would be good advised for learning on a daily base to get the MOST out of necessary knowledge and skills to give OUR kids the BEST Education possible, an ===> Up-To-Date <=== knowledge, a knowledge who isn’t ONLY a cherry-picked knowledge, BUT a knowledge who includes ALSO Privacy and Cyber-Security as also skills!
The future is also that any device, even in the household, will be connected to the internet. It is called “The Internet Of Things” and as with any NEW technical stuff, it brings risks and vulnerabilities…
MOST of people don’t realize the importance of privacy, especially for Cyber-Security and Identity Theft, check the video below who explains very good, please.
.
.
After watching the video YOU certainly are surprised and hopefully also willing to learn a bit more, it is actually NOT that difficult as most people think.
Who’s To Blame For Cyber-Security problems!?
Surveys from professional companies are NOW ALSO showing that Cyber-Security is OUR ALL responsibility, check below, please…
The Dangers And Vulnerabilities Of The Internet Of Things
.
Same procedure again, read my curation about it to find out, it is THE easiest way to get aware of the existing dangers and to get convinced about that LEARNing about Cyber-Security is a MUST…
[Start text from Kaspersky] The word “wearable” was once merely an adjective describing an article of clothing that was easy to wear. Now “wearable” refers to a mobile device that users wear on their body, and this latter wearable was a major topic of discussion last week. New mobile and wearable devices offer users a robust set of innovative features and utilities but they often face the same traditional threats as old fashioned computers.
“In coming months, we’ll see wearable devices becoming the next attack targets, highlighting the need to pay special attention to these devices, their capabilities, and the information they handle.” [End text from Kaspersky]
Below YOU will find some Tweets which I posted, related to this Topic of Cyber-Security and who will give YOU also an overview on How-To YOU could create Tweets (Posts) on Social-Media Twitter. YOU may use them, BUT please give credit to me as I was its creator, thanks 😉
NEW #Technology gives YOU the possibility 2 SHOW UP as… BUT its a dreaming world! DON’T loose the #REALITY 😉 Do YOU got #Maturity!??? InternetSafety existing but NOT for adults, seniors… MUST get updated and created .

Privacy In The Digital World-A MUST To Talk About It!
.
.
Since Edward SNOWDEN‘s revelations nearly everybody knows about the word “Privacy“, even those WHO were NOT interested about it, as it was worldwide broadcasted! This person did reveal WHAT is really happening in the so called “Virtual-World” (the internet) and how much secret services around the world are interested about to grab ANY information about ANY person WHO is online! BUT, it’s NOT ONLY them, ALSO Cyber-Criminals are looking for these information! And ALSO commercials who find out YOUR psychological profile through YOUR behavior on Social-Media!
.
Start Text from The Guardian:
The UN general assembly unanimously voted last week to adopt a resolution, introduced by Germany and Brazil, stating that “the same rights that people have offline must also be protected online, including the right to privacy”. Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel , were among those spied on, according to the documents leaked by Snowden.
===> The resolution called on the 193 UN member states “to review their procedures, practices and legislation regarding the surveillance of communications, their interception and collection of personal data, with a view to upholding the right to privacy of all their obligations under international human rights law”. It also directed Pillay to publish a report on the protection and promotion of privacy “in the context of domestic and extraterritorial surveillance … including on a mass scale”. <===
She told Berners-Lee that it was “very important that governments now want to discuss the matters of mass surveillance and right to privacy in a serious way”.
BUT is THAT all why I created this blog!? Certainly NOT, there is much more behind, mostly hidden by its creators BUT WHAT MUST get said to tell YOU to stay aware about WHAT YOU are publishing and on what you are get tracked in the “Virtual-World“, such as:
HTML5, NO needs of cookies anymore for Web Tracking and Geo-Localisation
===> Critical-THINKing: are WE creating a “Stalking-Society”!? <===
.
..
WHAT do the above mentioned articles really mean!?
WHEN WE are online WE are transparent already as website owners are using OUR data for commercial purposesand with posting more about OUR private life, especially on Social-Media (Twitter, Facebook and…) WE give THEM even more information about ourselves!
.
.
..
Network Hacking May Lead to Bigger Problems
[START Text from links below] While social networks don’t have your bank account information or credit card number, they may provide enough personal data for hackers to answer security questions on other sites. If you use the same password for your Facebook as your PayPal or Amazon login, hackers could then take control of these accounts. [END Text from links below]
Do WE Still Have Privacy Rights In The Digital World!?
According to latest press releases: Based on internal NSA documents, Der Spiegel reveals that the spy agency planted backdoors to access computers, hard drives, routers, and other devices from companies such as Cisco, Dell, Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung.
This blog will get updated as soon as I get new information and certain Topics, such as Google Glass, Skype in Global Education and Google+ Hangouts in Global Education will get updated and described later…
