LEARNing By Doing-A MUST in Modern EDUcation for BEST Results

Let us START with a Chinese proverb from Confucius <===> I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. Already more than 1500 years ago, this wise man was talking about “Learning By Doing“. Please check below:

More about Confucius:

Research shows that hands-on learning is an effective way to teach students science. A 2009 study found that eighth-grade students who were involved in hands-on science projects demonstrated a deeper understanding of concepts than students who were taught with traditional methods such as textbook readings, lectures, and tests (Riskowski et al., 2009).

WHAT could get included into the Curriculum WITH Learning-By-Doing

hammer

WHY NOT including #MakerED as a <===> #LEARNingByDoing <===> into the curriculum!? WHAT’S that meaning? Let the students, learners tinker a bit about the subject taught; please find here below some topics with examples and explications:

Well, lots of more ideas to find on YouTube, give it a try 😉 Check out, below, please some videos to GET inspiration:

Sustainability: EVERY kid (nearly) has a smartphone, right!? Smartphones can take ALSO photos (NOT ONLY selfies… use them on intelligent way), so WHY NOT using them to teach the kids about the nature?  To make them curious about WHAT is around them when they walk outside the house! Make it like an adventure, show them, guide them, show them ALSO WHERE to find plants, flowers by uploading an image on Google to find out WHAT it is; this is possible, click below please:

SHOW them How-To use Photo-Editors to enhance taken photos and to bring in text into the photos (this e.g. the name of the plants, photos, animals, insects…).

Learn more:

Learning by Doing has ALSO a lot to do with “Creativity“, use it in YOUR courses while using “ThingLink“, find some PracTICE examples below, please:

By using the above mentioned you will engage the students, learners, which will amplify the desire to learn on THEIR OWN! Read more about “Engagement” below please:

Check out ALSO the video below, please.

Blogs-Tips and Tricks

Blogs-Tips and Tricks

.

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

YOU created your blog, WHAT to take care about now!?

programmerman-animated.

SO, you created a blog; hopefully you did read my advice on my previous blog posts. Let us have a look back on those blog posts and finding out WHAT WE can do BETTER to have success in the internet blogging community:

.

In above list of mentioned blog posts you will find already a lot of Tips & Tricks, which are working perfectly as I use them myself. WHAT else to do?

Well, as I am watching a lot of blogs from EDUcators, TEACHers, I analyze that THEY are NOT back-linking as I do (see links above WHO are back-linking) to other published blog posts…); well that is a MUST as YOU have an audience of readers (EDUcators, TEACHers, Students, parents…) WHO want to know how it is run the BEST possible way!

From EDUcators, TEACHers, Professors, Instructors one expects that THEY know THE right way to do it!! THEY have a certified diploma for TEACHing, isn’t it!? 😉 THUS meaning: NOT ONLY publishing <===> Half-Baked stuff <===> BUT first getting informed (search skills on Search-Engines [Google, etc.]) and by curation to find BEST results and LEARNing (especially understanding it!!) from it before publishing!! DON’T forget <===> YOU have an audience of readers (EDUcators, TEACHers, Students, parents…) WHO want to know how it is run the BEST possible way!

VERY rarely (I am lurking on Twitter Chats as also participating…) I see THAT EDUcators, TEACHers and students DON’T know (too lazy???) the HELP and SUPPORT of blog service, such as mentioned below from WordPress e.g.:

Well, too lazy or let’s say too comfortable; why NOT asking OTHERS to do the job 😉

Keep in mind the “Synthesizing Mind“!

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

And as a reminder about WHAT a blog is, check the infographic below please.

.

.

Embedding media (Audio, Images, Videos) is important as it nurtures creativity!

Unfortunately THIS isn’t used by lots of people yet and should get changed.

Learn more about creativity:

Let us come back to the TOPIC. Once created a blog YOU need to GET it known as YOU want that your content gets read by people; SO WHAT to do to get an audience!? BEST PracTICE is to be on Social-Media, especially on Twitter as well as to make curation; both work perfectly together! You DON’T know WHAT curation is, nor Twitter!??? OK, let us have a look on it by following my blog posts and ALSO my curation about curation:

I will show YOU some practical examples as I am used to do, both Twitter and Curation below with screenshots…

.

curation-blogs-gust-mees

Click the above image please to access the article(s).

You will see that even in my curation there are links related to my OTHER blog posts (back-linking) which are sending the readers to other blog posts for learning more! This back-linking permits also a BETTER “SEO” (Search Engine Optimization) for the “Search-Engines” (Google and others…); thus meaning: YOUR blog will get BETTER found when searching the internet!

Learn more about SEO and curation:

.

Check image below please to find out about the How-To to tweet (post on twitter):

.

By using Social Media Twitter and Facebook, Pinterest as also others… You are sharing your work with others!! Thus meaning: other people will see it and eventually also visiting and reading your precious work! You will grow YOUR audience, that’s what you want, isn’t it?

Time THE MOST Important Factor Neglected In EDUcation!

Time THE MOST Important Factor Neglected In EDUcation!

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

Time THE MOST Important Factor Neglected In EDUcation!

NO Framing in EDUcationWHY do I mention the word “Time“!? EVER thought about on How-To people learn!? Some are learning very quickly and others need MORE time as OTHERS to understand! BUT THEY ALL have to follow THE same scheme and rhythm in EDUcation, sounds strange isn’t it 😉

Personally I am one of those who are learning AND understanding very quickly, BUT as I became an instructional coach (instructor) with certified (by Luxembourg Government) pedagogical background (four months tailored pedagogy training with and about ICT) in 2001 I went (a NEW adventure…) to give courses to adults, seniors, youth, classrooms, EDUcators, TEACHers in 2002 and I had to learn myself about THAT magic word <===> Time <===>!

Well, I learned very quickly THAT one size DOESN’T fit ALL and THAT time plays a MAJOR role, especially for adults and seniors! I adjusted my courses constantly and in 1-2 years time I was ready to give my learners, students, the BEST possible learning… I adjusted constantly (as I am a Life-Long Learning person) as soon as I had learned some NEW stuff, so do I still today (even being retired…). WHEN MY brain is adapting quickly, so OTHERS will benefit from it ALSO, in another time period which I have to adapt to it, it’s possible with good will, patience, motivation and engagement…

I have given my (pedagogical/andragogical) courses in an OPEN place (NOT school), called <===> Internetstuff <===> in Luxembourg (Europe) to adults, seniors, classes, EDUcators TEACHers on a coaching way up from 2002 to 2011 with GREAT success. I had the time to observe the learners, to analyze how THEY reacted, acted OR NO action at all; I was learning the behavior of my learnersKnowing someones behavior makes it more easy to teach (coach) persons individually and so the learners are learning much more quick also!

My audience were learners from 11 to 79 years old, YES also 79 year old persons learned about the use of a computer and the internet and the basics of Cyber-Security to protect them. Sounds strange that 79 year old’s can learn that!? It is possible, as I did it with them… One needs to have a lot of patience, THE factor <===> TIME <===> and they will be able to learn AND to understand it!

I didn’t use <===> Pedagogy <===> BUT <===> Andragogy <===>, the theory of <===> Adult-LEARNing <===> and that works perfectly. please read my blog post below:

The learners got first taught about the use of the keyboard and straight after the use of the internet, especially the way on How-To create an email. So they were able to exchange their email addresses and to communicate to each other from the learning group, which I encouraged them to do so as PracTICE.

.

300px-Exponential.svg

Click the above image please to access the article…

.

.

I didn’t start any other lesson with the Learners till they had understood completely the previous lessons; well that took a bit more time as usually BUT it had it’s benefits for the further lessons as they could learn much quicker once the basics understood. It is like an exponential curve…

.

.

.

.

What else did I do to accelerate the learners learning? Well, in any class there is at least one who is learning quicker as others; so profiting from this and giving that particular person already an extra lesson which it can learn and sharing its knowledge then with the peers. By working in teams and by exchanging the learned with peers ALL of the learners learned much quicker. My over 9 years experience showed me that it is possible to reach +/- 96% of success for <===> understanding the learned <===> and that is the MOST IMPORTANT <===> understanding! Persons WHO have understood the learned have BETTER competency as others!

Learn more about competency:

I had ALSO two ladies mid forty in my learning team who were trying to find a new job and never had touched a computer. Both of them were coached individually to get the right ICT competencies to work in a modern office. And both found a job in 2004-2005, whereby one of them is actually earning more money then I do, as she climbed in her career 😉

SO, as you see the factor time plays a BIG role! Give YOUR LEARNers, students time and they will learn to become competent! 😉 If possible make the lesson build on PracTICE and try to arrange the lessons in a sort of <===> Problem Based LEARNing <===>, remember the quote of <===> Confucius <===> “Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand”. This wise man was right!

Thus meaning: make “THE problem” resolving over a whole “School Year” and coach YOUR LEARNers, Students; analyze, adjust, reflect, analyze again and ask for feedback, create “FAQ’S” (Frequently Asked Questions” together WITH YOUR LEARNers, Students; make it a collaboration work!

Reflections and advice for BETTER

[START text from Are Distinct Disciplines and Time Blocks the Way to Go in School? We know that separating learning into discrete subjects and time blocks is not the best way to prepare kids for the real world. [END Text from Are Distinct Disciplines and Time Blocks the Way to Go in School?] Read the complete article below please:

SO, as knowing this, WOULDN’T it be BETTER to organize lessons THAT WAY: e.g. let us take history; one lesson of history about whatever subject followed by an language course (English for example…) WHICH is treating exactly the same knowledge by teaching vocabulary, history parts (snippets) about what was taught in previous lesson and later the learners, students would get asked to create a blog post about it and to make ALSO some curation about the treated topic!? Let us take a look on the image below please to understand more:

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

Well, I think (Deep THINKing…) that such organization and intelligent use of  following courses with the same topic would deepen the knowledge of the students, learners and bring out understanding of the taught! On the same way the learners, students will GET skills of blogging and curation as well as searching skills and Critical-Thinking (to find BEST resources…)…

.

And as most of YOU know me already, I like to incorporate some music videos, enjoy it 😉

PracTICE: How DOES The Internet Help ME In My Private Life, Professional Development, Job AND Career

programmerman-animatedI am a pioneer and was always one of the first to try out NEW stuff since my young age, very curious about it WHAT that could be and WHAT would be my advantage to use it. Let us call it <===> Learning By Doing <===> to get some knowledge, skills and experience out of that adventure 😉 Did I say <===> adventure!? <===> YES, it is actually! An adventure to discover NEW stuff where one doesn’t know where it will end 😉 BUT it is a BIG fun ALSO and one learns a lot through it! This attitude brings one ALSO to a <===> Life-Long LEARNing <===> strategy which I wouldn’t miss, whatever age one has! I am actually (2015) aged sixty (60), retired since 2014 (pedagogical/andragogical ICT Instructor) and STILL learning on a daily base as it is a pleasure for me.

It is ALSO a pleasure for me to share my knowledge with OTHERS (especially EDU related people) on Social Media Twitter, through curation and blogging. The internet (I started 1998) is a GREAT resource and a wonderful <===> Virtual World <===> which needs to get discovered and where WE need to know ALSO its dangers, same as in <===> Real World <===> let us call it <===> Awareness and Digital CitiZENship!

Before WE start, the above title is a long one, let us break it down to the different Topics: private life, Professional Development, job and career.

How Does The Internet Help ME In My Private Life!?

programmerman-animatedAs already mentioned I started using the internet in 1998 with a very slow 56k Dial-Up Modem (which made ALSO a lot of noise…) and I found out about the search engines and the How-To to find information on it. Then I discovered about Cyber Security problems, virus and Co by reading specialized Computer-Magazines. YES, that existed already at that time!!! I was telling OTHERS about those threats; THEY told me that I am crazy as THEY didn’t realize its existence! SO… I continued learning about it and I became a vigilant internet user. Knowledge and skills which I developed through the years, see on the bottom of this blog post, please.  BUT, as a normal user, how can the internet help me in my private life!?

Well, a lot actually: I can check for Restaurants, I can book my holidays online, I can buy stuff online, I can book nearly WHATEVER I want online, I can search for BEST prices online for WHATEVER, I can prepare my holidays with special interactive maps (ThingLink), I can use “Google maps” to find my way, even with “Streetmap” which makes my traveling much easier, I can find cooking and baking recipes as well as tutorials on YouTube, I can share my experience and life experience through blogging and curation

Internet history:

Some examples of blogs and curation about gardening (flowers), cooking, festivals:

Some special online tools:

.

How Does The Internet Help ME In My Professional Development!?

programmerman2Because of the internet I have a 24/7 access and I can learn whenever, wherever I want: SO… I can plan my learning on my OWN pace, alone as an autodidact (self-directed learning) and/or through Social Media Twitter. I use curation on each day and I develop through curation my <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management. I use ALSO blogging with WordPress. And I use Twitter as well. Through the internet I learn much more quicker, especially through <===> curation!

.

Find out WHY and the How-To:

.

How Did The Internet Help ME In My Job!?

programmerman-animatedI found a new job because of my ICT skills, even that I became an “pedagogical/andragogical ICT course instructor“, check below please for the full story:

Even several articles from me were published in the press and a University in Germany is referring to my FREE online courses, check below please:

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Firts of all I get a lot of profit out of the internet and the connections which I make with others: Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

UnLEARNing THE OLD, ReLEARNing, LEARNing To LEARN / How To!?

UnLEARNing THE OLD, ReLEARNing, LEARNing To LEARN / How To!?

.

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

UnLEARNing THE OLD, ReLEARNing, LEARNing To LEARN / How To!?

UnLEARNing THE OLD, ReLEARNing, LEARNing To LEARN / HowTo!? WHAT!??? I hear very often (too often) this phrase “As a TEACHer, professor, I want to teach my whole career THE SAME way as I do NOW AND WE did it ALWAYS SO!“. Aaaaargh, when I hear that phrase I get even more grey hair as I already have 😉

Teaching, the profession that creates all other professions

.

.

NEW research has shown that WE as TEACHing persons did it WRONG the last centuries and that WE need to focus more on the students, learners. It is NOT us, THE TEACHing persons WHO are the most important, BUT the students, learners! The role of TEACHers, EDUcators has changed as I mentioned this in a previous post <===> SO, What’s THE CHANGE For Teachers In 21st Century Education!?.

That post explains already the How-To of THE CHANGE, BUT let us GO deeper in detail about WHAT WE need to focus on and WHAT will help us to adapt to it.

A MUST Read Book From Howard GARDNER To Understand What The Skills Are THAT Students Need In 21st Century!

programmerman-animatedMOST of Educators, Teachers are struggling about the How-To of teaching THEIR students, learners for a future WHERE NOBODY knows WHAT the jobs would be as ICT together with Social Media and the “Big Data” will create NEW opportunities for entrepreneurs in the ICT sector. New Apps will get created, there is a market for Cyber-Security and Privacy, there is a need for “Community Managers”, and much more…

.

Howard GARDNER book-Five Minds For The Future.

.

.

.

.

SO… WE need to find a “Leitfaden” for WHAT WE should teach OUR students, learners to be ready for a very quick changing world, a “LEARNing-Path” for “Life-Long LEARNing” to adapt quickly to THAT situation (quick changing world)! There is NO ONE SOLUTION existing, WE need to integrate different skills, theories, PracTICE into a whole to achieve THAT very hard task!!!

One size doesn’t fit all! I recommend to YOU strongly to read the book from Howard GARDNER 5 Minds for the Future; it SHOULD be a MUST read for any teaching person 😉

EDUcators, TEACHers, Instructors, Professors Need To Become MORE Professional!

EINSTEIN quotes-problems.

.

I am sixty (60) now and WHAT I see online, hearing from students (and encountered as a student as well…) about the “Professional Development” from EDUcators, Teachers, Professors, Instructors in EDUcation, it gives me more grey hair as I already have!!! 😦 Since ages THEY are behind and NEVER will be Up-To-Date!!!

This needs to get considered and “DeepTHINKing” about it is a MUST!!!

I created several blog posts together with online friends on <===> Global-Collaboration <===> which will give YOU some insights, tips and tricks, advice on the How-To to change this, check below please:

SO… That was about <===> Professional Development <===> above, BUT aren’t there any other advice, research papers about it!? YES, please check my curation below please:

WE Have Now ALSO Social Media To LEARN Together On Global Collaboration

programmerman2Sounds strange, learning together on a <===> Global Collaboration <===> WITH <===> Social Media <===>, especially <===> Twitter <===>!??? Well, I agree, at first moment it is 😉 I was thinking the same on the beginning and didn’t know actually WHAT to do with Twitter in 2009!!! Actually NOW (30-11-2015) I have posted more than 101k (101,365) posts (tweets) and I have a “Google Page Rank” of 5/10!!!

I used blogging (WordPress) and Twitter together wit Curation for my LEARNing and Coaching, as well for <===> Global Collaboration <===> check below please:

.

Let Us Mention ALSO Curation As It Is THE Way To Collect Information AND To Learn On A Daily Base

I invite YOU to read my blog post <===> Learn Every Day a Bit-With Curation <===> and to check the infographic below to understand about WHAT it is.

LEARNing Path For Professional 21st Century LEARNing By ICT PracTICE Concept

programmerman-animatedI have seen people on Social Media Twitter and others, especially EDUcators and TEACHers struggling on the How-To prepare students and learners for future jobs which don’t exist yet and which NO ONE knows WHAT they will be. Countless were the posts “But how will I teach my students, learners when I don’t know what the jobs will be in the future!?” So I designed a concept with ICT PracTICE which can adapt to any situation, please check below:

If I Would OWN a Company, WHAT Skills Would I Expect From MY Workers In 21st Century!?

programmerman-animatedBecause of ICT there are sooooo many NEW possibilities to use with the computers and the internet. Just imagine that a company owner should employ people for each special application, NO WAY! (S)He wouldn’t have enough money to afford it!!! So it is necessary that <===> the 21st Century worker/employee would be an all-rounder! <===> An all-rounder WHO comes straight out of school and from whom the business/workforce could profit directly!!!

WHAT would be these skills the business/workforce will need!?

First of ALL it SHOULD be an AWARENESS about the Cyber Security problems WHO could happen and WHO could destroy a company and/or a companies reputation! <===> Forewarned is Forearmed! <===> is the BEST protection as it is anchored in the mind! WE will discuss this in the next chapter in depth!

Sometimes it is necessary as well to edit some text in a Word (or else Open Source) document and to use ALSO photos in these documents: SO… WE need to have knowledge about <===> Copyright <===>, photo editing and publishing as well as the how-to to transform these documents into a PDF.

A company, to stay competitive, needs ALSO to know WHAT is going on on the global market and needs to be up-to-date with latest NEWS, WHAT would be BETTER than making <===> curation <===> about it and to share these knowledge internally in the company through an intranet!? SO, my employees SHOULD know how to make curation which THEY could use as well for THEIR OWN learning by using a PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management <===> https://globaleducationandsocialmedia.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/pkm-personal-professional-knowledge-management/.

AND as WE as a company need to be up-to-date by using ICT WE SHOULD ALSO being able to create a blog from where WE inform OUR customers about WHAT is NEW in OUR company and eventually report ALSO about warnings, awareness about some products, as well as through OUR blog informing OUR customers through a NEWSLETTER! Those are part of a 21st Century orientated company!

Learn more about blogs:

AND didn’t WE forgot something!? WHAT’s about <===> Social Media <===>!? WE as a competitive company SHOULD ALSO be present on Facebook AND on Twitter, isn’t it!? SO… OUR employees SHOULD know ALSO to handle it:

Priority: My Employees SHOULD be Cyber Security Savvy

programmerman2First of ALL it SHOULD be an AWARENESS about the Cyber Security problems WHO could happen and WHO could destroy a company and/or a companies reputation! <===> Forewarned is Forearmed! <===> is the BEST protection as it is anchored in the mind! It is called <===> Proactive THINKing!

Searching on Google and/or on other Search Engines (allowed in the company or NOT) will happen and could infect the computer and EVEN the whole company IT infrastructure WHEN an employee doesn’t know WHAT s(he) is doing!!! SO… Better is that the employees know WHAT are the dangers and my company as well SHOULD have installed on ALL the computers different awareness and protection software, here my advice:

.

How Could EDUcation Teach Students To Get These skills!?

Teaching the profession that....

In a modern, very quick changing world because of ICT, EDUcation MUST follow to provide the business/workingforce with workers/employees WHO have the necessary skills, EVEN WITHOUT knowing WHAT next jobs would be! MOST say that it isn’t possible and a BIG challenge, BUT a challenge WHO actually is MORE easy by following my advice by reading my blog posts:

Problems With Innovation In Schools!?

programmerman2In case IF (MOST probably have…) YOU would have problems to GET the necessary as mentioned in my posts made into action in YOUR EDU-System, read the below advice:

.

Collaboration, Team-Work AND Global Collaboration

sharing-iconAs mentioned already in the above infographic there is a need to work in a team, collaboration AND Global-Collaboration (with manufacturers, re-sellers…) are a MUST! EVEN in the schools Global-EDUcation is a MUST to make the students, learners ready to get used to it 😉

I made several Global-Collaboration on blogging for <===> LEARNing To LEARN <===> about <===> Digital CitiZENship and Cyber Security <===> with  and , check below please:

WHEN being involved to work in a team, WE need to get used to it as well as to THE letter “C” in ICT, which means <===> Communication <===> as BOTH are part of an efficient work relationship which is necessary for the wealth of a company!

IF EDUcation Doesn’t Give ME WHAT I Want, How Could I Coach MY Workers To LEARN

Well,as already mentioned above, my advice is STILL THE SAME, please check:

programmerman-animated.

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>!

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for beingUp-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

programmerman-animatedFacts to consider and advice:

YOU SHOULD explain that to YOUR LEARNers by designing the courses and tell THEM that they shouldn’t fear, that they should tell YOU when being in trouble, YOU should tell them that YOU take ALL the necessary time so that THEY will understand it, YOU should encourage them at any moment so that they will find the pleasure to LEARN 😉 YOU SHOULD use Empathy, observing them and find out WHO are those who are shy; the ones WHO won’t tell you when there is a problem. YOU SHOULD interact with them, looking over their shoulders and finding out WHERE the problem is.

That is the hardest part BUT the MOST IMPORTANT one as when they understood that they could find confidence in YOU, then they will advance in their LEARNing, THEY NEED confidence in YOU and in THEMSELVES!

Thus meaning: make the LEARNing individual! Take care of each person till they have understood it. It is like <===> differentiated instruction <===> EDUcation, BUT more coaching than teaching. In one phrase, differentiated instruction is primarily suiting instructional means to meet individual learning needs.

WHAT Are THE Jobs Look Like In The Future!?

Well, there is certainly no one WHO could answer that question! One can ONLY speculate about it: there will certainly be a lot of jobs who will be created because of Social Media, Internet of Things and Cyber Security; some certainly also from the MakerED industry an I guess that (my prediction) that the Cyber Hygiene sector would become the future jobs market as well! WHY in Cyber Hygiene!? WHAT is Cyber Hygiene anyway!?

As Cybercrime as also Cyberespionage, so as privacy problems will certainly NOT going away, it is important if not a MUST that the employees of companies are well trained about those risks! There is certainly a big market in training employees.

Andragogy, Adult Teaching!? WHAT Is Different From Normal Student Teaching!?

students-workforceIt is a question which I get asked very often “Andragogy, Adult Teaching!? WHAT Is Different From Normal Student Teaching!?“. Well, first remember that adults and seniors are OUT of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> since long or very long, THEY are NOT used anymore for learning! That is a very important fact to consider first before YOU start teaching adults and seniors. ALSO, adults and seniors are NOW (as out of school) mostly more focused on the benefits THEY could have in their private life and are willing to learn stuff which fits to their needs in private life!

Another very important point to consider is that a lot of adults, seniors have a FEAR against schools and school-teaching, they made bad experiences with teachers AND still thinking on the stress with tests! AND they are used to an OLD outdated EDUcation System which told them that learning is finished once reached the degree (the diploma in the pockets)! BTW: a RETHINKING of EDUcation for <===> Life-Long Learning is a MUST! As well as how the diplomas are getting handled and valued: e.g. A diploma today doesn’t show any professional development made!!! My proposition is to create the diplomas as: first diploma after school is “A, B,C etc…”, then the professional development (followed courses) should get added such as e.g. A1-2015-1: first professional development made in 2015, one course. A1-2015-5 first professional development made in 2015, five courses, and so on…

This would make the diplomas more valuable as the workforce would recognize them much more than normal ones where they don’t see straight on if a person has followed courses after school or not…

THE factor time is ALSO very important, as said already above, adults and seniors need MORE time to learn as NOT used anymore for learning! Prepare YOUR courses by considering longer sessions!

And as (already) MOST of YOU know me, a music video, related to the TOPIC 😉

.

.

Chose ALSO a room who doesn’t look sterile (white color) as it would remind them school again! And of course DON’T give the courses in a school! Sounds strange!? Think on the psychological background of fear 😉 Make the learners feel comfortable!

And last but not least, DON’T teach adults, seniors with a normal pedagogy, as THEY won’t accept it to get treated as 12 year old persons!!! THEY ARE OUT OF SCHOOL and they want to get treated as adult, <===> mature persons<===>!

SO… How To Teach Adults, Seniors!?

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-aigainformation1First of all, I mentioned it already above, DON’T let them feel like being in school and that YOU are a teacher, educator! Tell them that YOU will be THEIR coach who is guiding them and NOT teaching them and that THEY have a certain autonomy in the “Learning Room” (NOT Classroom!) They are allowed to move around in the “Learning Room”, searching help among their peers by respecting the noise level, copying from each other <===> YES, copying is allowed, OH WHAT FUN <===> everything which was forbidden in the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> is allowed here, hey that makes engaging them and they have fun as well 🙂

As THEIR coach YOU take care of an individual learning, YOU assist the persons in their learning, DON’T FORGET about the learning rhythm, one size doesn’t fit all! Some persons need more time…

YOU may use a beamer (or a digital whiteboard, depending on YOUR budget…) to introduce first about WHAT the learners will attend to learn where YOU show ALSO the <===> Learning Path <===> which YOU have prepared for them, so they will know up from the beginning where the destination goes with ALL the differentstations“, they will feel comfortable as they can visualize it, they will know as well WHAT skills they will acquire, less unknown stuff to think about…

An example below:

.

FlowChart-Final-Version

The learners will learn about any station in the “Learning Path” AND ALSO know about WHAT skills they will acquire! Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.

programmerman-animatedFacts to consider and advice:

Adults and especially seniors are NOT anymore used to LEARNing! By knowing this YOU need to take care about it: YOU SHOULD explain that to YOUR LEARNers and tell THEM that they shouldn’t fear, that they should tell YOU when being in trouble, YOU should tell them that YOU take ALL the necessary time so that THEY will understand it, YOU should encourage them at any moment so that they will find the pleasure to LEARN 😉 YOU SHOULD use Empathy, observing them and find out WHO are those who are shy; the ones WHO won’t tell you when there is a problem. Considering the “Learning Room“:

As mentioned already, make sure that the room isn’t sterile, NOT white! Consider the psychology of colors as it works, my 9 years experience with adults and seniors (NOT teaching) coaching. I used a pastel yellow color in the “Learning Room“, why!?

Yellow adds optimism to your home, prompting feelings of happiness in all who enter. Yellow activates memory, stimulates the nervous system, promotes communication and sparks creativity. And THAT is WHAT WE want in learning, isn’t it 😉

Learn more:

Make ALSO sure that there is an extra room available, where the adults, seniors can jump in to drink a beverage and eventually have some chatting with other participants, make them feel relax

.

SO… WHAT To Teach THEM And How!?

Flipchart-man-318584_1280-Public Domain-Andragogy

Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.

As mentioned already, adults and seniors learn differently and slower (consider the time fact); they want stuff which they can use in their private life! SO… WHAT could be those interests!? Did I say interests, YES, it is exactly this WHERE YOU need to focus when giving courses to adults and seniors! Before starting a course I do every time an introduction session where myself and others present themselves, after the introduction I ask everybody to come in front to me and writing with capital letters on a Flipchart their interests, they could use ALSO 4 different colors (red, green, blue, black).

WHY this!? First of all, there is a bit action as they have ALL to move from their places which is different from <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> and the color they chose is ALSO a sign of their character and mood… By the way: I ask them later also WHY they were choosing that color, just to open a discussion and to make them curios about next steps; they will be aware ALSO that I observe what is going around me and that I give THEM attention

WE will have a look all together NOW on the Flipchart and to find out the common interests, thus meaning: there will be a lot of people probably (mostly) who have THE same interests (hobbies) and NOW everybody knows WHO has the same hobby. WE created already an interest community without knowing it as these people will later talk together and probably will make an exchange of experiences 😉 It is up from there WE will build up OUR course(s)!

YOU certainly will encounter these hobbies: cooking, traveling, festivals, photos, gardening, cinema, reading, swimming, different sports, wandering, cards playing, taking videos, music, motorcycles, cars and more… That are the most common ones by my  experience over 9 years.

Some examples of blogs and curation about gardening (flowers), cooking, festivals:

.

NOW WE know much more about OUR course participants and WE have a starting base: as anybody mostly is proud about WHAT they are doing and easily willing to talk about it (mostly…) WE will show THEM on How-To they can do it through using ICT by explaining THEM that more people would see THEIR exploits and knowledge by using curation, blogging and Social Media. WE will explain them ALSO how it will work by examples, so that THEY can see it visually. And WHY NOT, for the creative ones, how to use “ThingLink“. By experience, women are MORE creative than men, just saying…

SO… How Can I Say That This (The PracTICE) Is Working!?

programmerman-animatedWell, I was a pioneer in my country Luxembourg (Europe) already in 2002 where I gave pedagogical courses about ICT to a wide range of the population as up from 12 years old (even younger when together with a parent) to 79 years old with different nationalities. ALSO there were two days in the week reserved (booked by planing inside the school) for the primary school where they could use OUR “ICT LEARNing room” by my coaching to learn the (at that time) NEW technologies. Schools didn’t have YET computers in the classes at that time and I was working very close together with the teachers and helped also to convince the responsible people from the commune about the necessity of computers in the classrooms, which worked 😉

SO… WHAT was that “ICT LEARNing Room“, called “Internetstuff“!? And WHY was my “Internetstuff” DIFFERENT from ALL the others in Luxembourg!?

A bit History and Story Telling: What is a “Internetstuff”? It was a project by the “European Commission” to bring the “ICT” to ALL the inhabitants in any commune in the European countries. They called it at that time “eEurope” and in Luxembourg it was a special task force, called “eLuxembourg” that was charged about it. SO, they decided to create special places where the population could learn through courses about “ICT”, which they called “Internetstuffen”.

Learn more (in French):

The Government in Luxembourg was looking at the time to find competent people to give those courses about ICT and they were advertising in the newspapers, where I made my application. I was selected and had to follow a 4 months long education through special tailored courses about the How-To to give pedagogical courses with ICT, a bit hard at that time as I was 45 years old already, BUT I did it and I found my vocation!

I offered my services and skills to different communes and it was in ETTELBRUCK (North of the country and 30 km away from where I am living) that I found a new job and a new adventure as a pioneer. Apart from giving courses about and with ICT, NO ONE of the responsible persons had a clue about the How-To, so they told me “Do what You want, You should know what…“, OK, I was perplex and ALONE to do this job!

First I elaborated the opening hours, than I created a “brochure” which was sent to all the houses in that small city (8k inhabitants) to inform them about this new service offered by the commune. I created also a “member card” of a value of 25€ for a whole year who gave the participants the right to visit the place to use only the internet (very few had Internet in 2002) and/or to take part of courses. The place was open on a 5/8, 5 days from Monday to Saturday from 8h30 am to 11h30 am and from 13h30 to 17h30. Monday and Wednesday mornings were reserved for Primary School classes from 08h am to 11h30 am. Saturday and Sunday was closed.

There were also evening courses organized and I collected about 1k6 (1,600) hours of overtime work during 1 1/2 year (non payed hours)! I couldn’t do that job anymore alone, BUT I din’t get a co-worker allowed neither. NO budget for it! I decided NOT anymore giving evening courses and giving the courses on a different way: people (learners) could visit the place whenever they wanted during the opening hours (only in the day) and I would give them courses individually and on different disciplines (security, Office, Photo Editing, website building, email, Skype…).

The learners had more autonomy, I let them work by PracTICE after first having them explained about the How-To shown with a beamer and then also on their own PC (there were 10 PCs in the Learning Room). They could come WHEN they wanted and for how long they wanted. They were completely FREE, no MUST, NO STRESS… I explained them, showed them, observed them (studied their behavior…) and interacted only when needed, when I felt that they must get a bit help to continue. I encouraged them to try by error till they would have learned it and when learned I showed them some tricks by giving advice on How-To do BETTER. It was ME who adjusted and adapted to them, a win-win situation. They learned slowly but surely and once the basics understood (the most important) they learned the other stuff to learn much more quick as they felt more confident about ICT. I encouraged them to practice at home which they all did. I asked them where they still have problems when practicing at home and WE repeated it on another way when possible, otherwise same procedure…

I was also constantly updating my “Professional Development” by reading lots of books (insatiable…):

Autonomy, TEAM, self-directed, autodidact, coaching, guide, analyzing learners constantly, adapting constantly, FAQ’s, PLN, PKM, SKYPE, VOIP Telephony, image editing, eMail, collaboration,

In 2015 Coaching-Mentoring Is Seen As An Education Difference-Maker

[START Text from On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning] Coaching is a difference-maker in education.  Think of the mindset evident in high-performing athletic teams, chess teams, even actors and other entertainers. Content providers are valuable, but that is not what makes learning organizations distinct, especially not those that seek to reach and provide a high-quality education to a full spectrum of learners. The same thing is true as we continue to implement things like competency-based education models. Many celebrate the way CBE can reduce the cost of college degrees, increasing access and opportunity, and addressing critical workforce needs. However, if cost reduction happens at the expense of great coaching and mentoring, I am concerned that we will make little progress in the democratization of education. The “haves and have nots” of education depend largely upon the prerequisite skills needed to take advantage of newer and emerging learning environments ranging from CBE to MOOCs, self-directed learning to self-organized learning environments. [END Text from On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning]

Feedback, Reflecting A MUST-Adapting Constantly

As already mentioned above, I asked a lot about WHERE some could have problems to understand and encouraged the learners to tell me, even I asked them to write down on the Flipchart questions they would have eventually. WE collected them all and when they were fit enough on the keyboard I let them create themselves (with my little help) a FAQ’s list (Frequently Asked Questions) and a glossary, see example below please.

.

Internet Monitor Glossary

Click the above image, please, to access the glossary online.

Please find below my blog posts about FAQ’s:

Keywords: win-win situation… honesty, straight talking, dealing with mature people, provoking could be (I do…) welcome with a bit irony and humor, dealing with humans, different characters needs to get analyzed before action, a bit courage to go out of normal,

.

Necessary Material For The Courses

Apart from the computers with internet connection here below a list of necessary material:

  • Flipchart
  • Printer All In One (with scanning function)
  • Camera for Photo Editing courses
  • USB Sticks
  • Head phones with micro for Skype use
  • Some webcams for Skype use

Is My Proposed Way Of Coaching With ICT ONLY For Adult Learning!?

sharing iconThere is a lot of common from the above mentioned with youth coaching and could be applied as well for them! WHEN YOU make youth feeling being accepted as adults, they will give YOU more respect and it will be a GOOD atmosphere for BETTER learning also! I had teens visiting my “Learning Room [Internetstuff]” for the ONLY purpose to listen and to observe when I gave courses with coaching to the participants. They came in their FREE time when there wasn’t school and made their homework while observing also my “style of teaching, as they said”. I got told by some of them that they learned MORE in 2 hours about ICT than they learned in a month in school. And THAT is THE difference between theory and <===> PracTICE! <===>.

ICT, Internet, Internet Of Things, Internet Of Everything, Wearables And WiFi Change OUR Habits

programmerman-animatedWE are living in a very quick changing world as the internet opens NEW possibilities, NOT ONLY for searching and publishing. WE are talking actually a lot about the ===> Internet of Things, Internet of Everything <=== whereby a lot of people have it already at home without knowing WHAT it actually is! So, does ALSO EDUcation which need to adapt to it as the internet is a common right for anyone. EDUcation is STILL looking on the How-To to implement it for LEARNing and TEACHing and (like usual…) struggling and behind that evolution, an evolution that is NOT temporary but will certainly go much further when one is watching on each day (thanks to the internet) the NEW discoveries, new technology, new materials based on Nano-Technology. WHAT was true YESTERDAY isn’t anymore TODAY! Therefore it is important, actually a MUST, that in EDUcation the students, learners, will get prepared for the (not so anymore unknown) near future, they MUST get prepared for ===> LEARNing-To-LEARN <===, to be able to adapt their knowledge by daily routines, they will become ===> Life-Long-LEARNing <=== persons!

Learn more:

.

SO, WHAT Are The NEW Habits?

Well, there is WiFi nearly everywhere NOW, isn’t it? And WiFi is FREE in most places, right? AND nearly everybody has a Smartphone, right? SO, thus meaning: when people talk to each other (WHEN NOT using their Smartphones…) it happens sometimes (OR often…) that the persons are asking questions which couldn’t get answered instantly, so… opening the browser on the Smartphone, searching and finding it, as well as maybe sending that answer to the talking partner through the internet to get visible on their Smartphone. Got it?

.

Albert-EINSTEIN-Technology-Idiots

.

AND the NEW trend to use wearables who communicate to each other by using “Bluetooth” and/or an internet connection? WE spend a lot of time by watching and using OUR NEW toys (wearables, Smartphones, tablets…), is there a NEW message on Facebook, on Twitter, on any other Social Media…? A lot of people (if NOT MOST…) are already on dependency! Ask THEM WHAT they would do without THEIR so loved toys and without the internet!?

.

iDiots

Click the above image, please, to access the video and enjoy while <===> Deep-THINKing on it as well 😉

.

SO… YOU might have understood already, WE are using the internet nearly for everything in our days AND WE are sharing a lot, thus meaning: Are WE aware of WHAT WE are sharing? Is the shared NOT infected with Malware!? How many of OUR Privacy are WE sharing!? WHAT happens with infected computers, tablets, wearables, and Smartphones!? WHAT’S the reason for WHY WE get nearly any service for FREE!? Aren’t WE getting too paranoid about CyberSecurity!? Aren’t WE NOT too naif while using technology without understanding it!?

A lot of questions, isn’t it!? AND there is a reason why fore, check below, please:

This implies ALSO to OUR way of THINKing about the technology and ICT, WE MUST develop a sense of Awareness for CyberSecurity and Privacy! ===> LEARNing-To-LEARN <===

« Good habits formed at youth make all the difference. » Aristotle

YOU are STILL feeling YOUNG, aren’t YOU 😉

.

HOW Could This Be Taught?

Well, it is actually NOT THAT difficult at all. Parents can start this with their kids in a very early age and EDUcation can start it ALSO up from primary school; it’s ONLY a question of ===> GOOD WILL <=== 😉

I encourage YOU to read my following blog posts to find out…

Design The Learning Of YOUR Learners, Students AND YOURS

A GOOD preparation made is already the half way done! SO… Making a design on the How-To learning will give benefits for the educators AND the learners (students)! Education has since ages being behind about the How-To of “Learning” (waiting for “Research papers who come 10 years or more later…) as it still is in the mind of THEM as “Teaching” on an old fashioned manner! THE “Mind Set SHIFT” to the 21st Century is STILL NOT made by most and certainly NOT from people who have decisive power as THEY are NOT up to date with THEIR “Professional Development” who is very far behind! Check the below links, please, to find out WHAT is NEW in Education:

Below YOU will see WHAT the world needs for abilities from students in the 21st Century: use it to design YOUR course(s), please.
