Modern-EDUcation: FIRST try to understand WHAT it is before taking the wrong path!

programmerman-animatedLet us be honest: EDUcation is far behind of WHAT it should be able to face the challenges of a modern world which is evolving quicker than WE can follow! Because of ICT everything is nearly possible: NEW professions are emerging through NEW ideas; Entrepreneurship is one of the biggest evolving one. One can’t count anymore the possibilities, nor predict WHAT will be next professions! SO, WHAT does this mean for EDUcation!?

EDUcation can’t follow, nor adapt THAT quickly, without talking about the minds behind WHO don’t want to change as well!!! SO, is there any possibility for students, learners, THEY could be benefiting with and/for an Up-To-Date knowledge!? YES, there is a solution: students and learners should get taught about <===> LEARNing-To-LEARN <===> so that they would be able for <===> Life-Long LEARNing, this is THE BEST way to look for a <===> Long-Term solution <===> as one can’t get ALL the necessary knowledge anymore in schools!!

Please read:

WE should go on <===> Proactive THINKing <===> to adjust this well known situation and to adapt by teaching the students learners the way of <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> and to encourage them to become autodidacts, self-directed learners! That’s THE BEST way for them to stay <===> Up-To-Date <===> and that’s WHAT is counting in a modern and ever growing society! The workforce/industry needs this to be competitive!

FIRST of all WE need to know WHAT are the skills students need to have

.

what-skills-will-you-need-to-succeed-in-the-future_5061e259a60b6_w587

.

There is a Windows dominance on the market!!! SO, don’t use ONLY Apple products in your school, BUT make for sure that YOUR LEARNers, Students will know and have the skills to work on that “OS”; of course you might use as well iPads! BUT make sure that there is a mix of different “OS” anyway. As educational persons WE have a BIG Responsibility to prepare OUR Students, LEARNers for the future! NO Cherry-Picking allowed!!! NO preferences for #AnyOS #AnyDevice!!! A mixture of THEM YES, orientated about WHAT “OS” is leading the market.

How can EDUcators TEACHers and EDU understand WHAT Modern EDU is!?

change-gartner-2016Well, there are some really good books which will help EDUcators TEACHers to understand WHAT Modern-EDU and NEW pedagogy is to be prepared for THE CHANGE; YES it is a BIG CHANGE which might not be easy for lots as THE role of the EDUcators TEACHers will change; NOT having anymore the control, the power, of a classroom BUT being a coach WHO is trying to get a win-win situation TOGETHER with the learners, students. Personally I think that fearing to lose the control and power is the common point for most educating persons for NOT adapting to Modern-EDU!

BUT, THAT is wrong! You will get even more recognized and respected WHEN you play the coach role; my experience over ten (10) years. Put the students in the drivers seat, let them teach also and learn also from them 😉

SO, read FIRST my selection of books, which helped ME to understand about Modern-EDU and where that acquired knowledge led me, please:

.

MUST READ BOOKS

.

For BEST understanding I recommend to YOU to start first with “5 Minds for the Future“, followed by “FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EDUCATION” and then “The App Generation“.

If YOU are multilingual (English, French, German), you might read as well my books selection which I have read and which helped me a lot:

.

Check about WHAT the book “5 Minds for the Future” is:

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

Linear learning was YESTERDAY; imagine learning <===> time, too long to catch up when only A, then B, Then C… Check AGAIN the PIC above, please 😉

Time is ALSO a very IMPORTANT part of Modern-EDU to adjust for quicker learning WHEN knowing about “TEAM-TEACHing“, called ALSO “Co-TEACHing” and the How-To about making learning really meaningful and professional, check below, please:

.

What are the barriers to overcome for that THE CHANGE happens? Obstacles to make the next steps to Modern-EDU

.

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-aigainformation1Without a lot of talking myself, I invite you to read the following articles which explain  at its BEST:

.

Quote from [https://twitter.com/kimgarst] “If you don’t leave your past in the past, it WILL destroy your future. Live for what today has to offer, not for what yesterday has taken away.

You have to fight against OTHERS who are NOT wanting THE CHANGE, the “StatusQuo” advocates, make curation WHERE you will curate the necessary arguments to convince and/or beat them with their OWN arguments!!

.

.

Listening, very important:

.

How to become GREAT Teachers, EDUcators which understand about Modern-EDU?

mediocrity-reward-nice-talking.

There are TOO MANY average (Mediocrity) EDUcators TEACHers around, Students and LEARNers need BETTER!!! Educational persons SHOULD read the below curated articles and finding out on WHAT they have to improve, please 😉

Coaches and/or mentors are a MUST

programmerman-animatedAs already mentioned in my first phrases of this blog post, with normal training for “Professional Development”, YOU can’t catch UP quickly enough!! SO, are there different ways? YES, by using Social Media, especially Twitter YOU can create a #PLN, a “Personal [Professional] Learning Network” from where YOU can learn already together, even ALSO by using Twitter Chats.

Learn more:

BUT there is ALSO another way: using blogs! Sounds strange? Well, with “WordPress” this is possible as YOU can invite co-authors on the same blog post and coaching over Twitter with “DM” (Direct Messages, called ALSO Private Messages) YOUR co-authors. I do this already since 2007-2008, started it on “Google Knol”, who was discontinued on May 1, 2012 where  I was one of the Knol-TOP10-English authors and also Author-of-the-Week in November 2009 with more than 1.4 millions of visits. “Google Knol” is one of LOTS of OTHER products from Google WHO are on the “Google Grave Yard“!

.

Gust MEES-Knol-Author-Of-The-Week-2009

.

Later I started blogging on WordPress and as I missed it working together with OTHERS, I did my coaching with EDUcators, TEACHers from different countries by inviting THEM to become co-authors on some of my blog posts. I was the editor and THEY were the co-authors, meaning they had a bit restrictions ONLY on WHAT to do with the main blog. SO, THEY learned about the How-To to use blogs (WordPress) through my coaching and ALSO about THE TOPIC WE were writing about; the coaching was done through Twitter “DM’s”; WE used blogs AND Twitter!

I did a LOT of those “Global-Collaboration” on blogging with different co-authors and I encourage everybody to do the same as it is a GREAT experience as one learns from each other 😉

WHAT could be done different while using ICT and NEW Pedagogy

programmerman2.

Well, that is a question I get asked very often; it is actually NOT that difficult, it just needs to understand WHAT Modern-EDU is and WHAT are THE tools (NO, NO, NOT Apps…, THEY are ONLY facilitators) WE can use to give OUR Students, LEARNers the necessary skills to survive in an ever changing world.

.

Check below, please:

Check out my Learning-Path with ICT Practice to get the idea about it, please:

SO many information, THE letter “I” in ICT, I can’t follow anymore!! Well, I can understand YOU, BUT there is a solution for it! 😉 Through curation and Social-Media (by creating a PLN on Twitter…) YOU can create a <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management (PKM), check my blog post below please: PKM – Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management:

And WHAT Is About Creativity!?

Let us start with a video from <===> Sir Ken ROBINSON <===>, please listen to it. Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.

.

.

There is actually a BIG move to creativity in EDUcation worldwide, e.g. <===> THE Maker-Movement; please check below for more information:

.

WHAT will influence EDUcation in the future!?

Is there something which one can predict, without being a wizard!? YES; for sure as persons WHO read constantly on each day WHAT is NEW on technology and science as well as research papers one can say this, see below, please:

Coaching in Modern EDUcation, the benefits

Framing in EDUcation.

Learners, students learn BETTER when their brain is free, without any framing, thus meaning: include them into the learning process by guiding them through the <===> LEARNing Process <===> instead of teaching ONLY linear lessons WHERE YOU are the BOSS, give up control and look for a Win-Win situation WHERE students, learners have a voice; WHERE THEY can take THEIR OWN responsibility of THEIR LEARNing. Coach THEM (the students, learners) THE How-To of <===> #LEARNing2LEARN <===> because THAT IS <===> #ModernEDU <===> which they need to be prepared for <===> #LifeLongLEARNing <===> by using Social Media, especially Twitter to build THEIR <===> #PLN Personal [Professional] LEARNing Network <===> through Curation combined with Social Media. And through THAT LEARNing-Path THEY will be able to create THEIR OWN #PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knoledge Management.

students-workforceAND there are also the “Apps“, BUT don’t forget that THEY are ONLY facilitators, they are NOT the change in 21st Century EDUcation; THE change is applying the pedagogy and the 21st Century techniques together. In 21st Century EDUcation it is NOT anymore about the teaching, BUT about the LEARNing and the ===> LEARNing-To-LEARN <=== to give OUR LEARNers, students the necessary knowledge and skills for a ===> Life-Long-LEARNing <=== Once out of school THEY will need constantly to learn to adapt to a very quick changing world!

I suggest to make ===> Coaching <=== with YOUR LEARNers, students where YOU walk through the rows in the classroom by observing THEM and to interact with them ONLY when they need it, learn together with them and create a ===> win-win situation <===, NO hierarchy, BUT a trustful partnership with them. I have done this since 2002 and it works perfect, best results! Find out more below:

In the above mentioned links YOU will see how WE learned together in OUR ===> Global Collaboration Blog <=== by ===> Coaching <=== through using the “DM” (Direct Messages) from Twitter, YES WE used Twitter, it works perfect😉 The same as WE used OUR blogs to communicate and to show OUR LEARNing to others, so that THEY could learn also from us.

The difference between coaching and mentoring

Coaching-mentoring

Click the above image please to access the article.

Please read the following article below who explains in detail:

[START text from “What Makes Coaching and Mentoring Different?“]

Mentoring

Mentoring is much more hands on and interpersonal.  As a leader or supervisor you are working hands on with a team member to facilitate the learning process.  Mentoring is sharing experiences, skills, and knowledge. It often takes place with an individual who is learning something that they have no previous knowledge about and it is something that they will need to master or at least be proficient in. Or it maybe learning how to navigate through an organization or explore new career paths.

Coaching

On the other hand, coaching generally does not focus on hard skill such as accounting, project management, or programming to name a few.  Coaching is a process that helps one to explore what may be holding them back from their true potential and often is focused more on behaviors than skills.

Think of a baseball coach, someone who is with the team and letting them do the work, however he/she will review the team and try to better their abilities across the field.  However imagine the same coach working with his pitcher and trying to teach him how to properly throw a curve ball.  The first scenario is simply coaching the team to raise productivity, and the second is mentoring an individual who is trying to learn a new skill or ability that he/she might not be able to properly learn on his or her own.

LEARNing Path For Professional 21st Century LEARNing By ICT PracTICE Concept

LEARNing2LEARN-2.

.

Over the years I developed and designed a possibility on the How-To use ICT for LEARNing and TEACHing which will prepare the LEARNers, students to fulfill the needs of the working market. It is mostly build up by coaching and NOT TEACHing as a <===> Win-Win situation is in mind and ALSO Collaboration <===> which are key factors in a modern society.

.

.

.

Let us first have a look on the How-To design a course which gives the learners, students some engagement as THEY could reproduce it themselves after YOU showed them the How-To and will bring in some creativity as well 😉

What's this coaching thing about

.

WE will use THAT system as shown on left-hand side shown image, isn’t it 😉 WE will give OUR learners, students autonomy and coaching them to become <===> Life-Long LEARNers <===> by <===> LEARNing To LEARN <===> through collaboration, by using blogging, curation, Social Media and by putting them into the drivers seat. THEY will learn to take responsibility to survive in a bi-directional world (Real World and Virtual World are interacting…) and WE will coaching THEM as well to be responsible <===> Digital CitiZEN <===> by LEARNing about the basics of <===> Cyber Security <===> as well and ALSO about <===> eSkills <===> as it is THEIR world with ALL the problems present which THEY have to fight for and in it!

..

.Learn more:

Sounds like a lot, isn’t it!? It’s actually NOT that difficult when well organized and designed, please check below (it takes some time…):

Here is a road map for visual understanding 😉

My Personal View AND PracTICE

.

.

Learning from others

Please check @yeates_mark on twitter. Click the image to access account!

MY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To.

.

THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

Check out my blog posts:

Blogging: Is It Difficult!? I Guess Not At ALL! Follow My Advice

programmerman-animatedI hear nearly each day: Blogging, WHY and How and THEN I don’t have THAT time to do it and WHY SHOULD I do it!? Well, a GOOD question anyway! I will try to explain…

Anybody has a story to tell, WE see it anyway on the comments made on Social Media Facebook and Twitter, SO WHY NOT creating a blog post about it to share YOUR point of view, YOUR learning and YOUR ideas!? Blogging is a GREAT way of sharing the thoughts of someone and it will be very GOOD for learning about <===> Critical THINKing and Proactive THINKing <===> actually a MUST in 21st Century! Society has changed A LOT because of ICT, and SO are the ways of learning and the need to show ALSO OTHERS WHAT’S wrong and WHAT are NEW ideas to make it BETTER! Use ALSO blogging after each “Twitter Chat” to reflect on it, see <===> Update Twitter Chats: WHAT To DO BETTER!?

Use blogging to show YOUR thoughts, WHERE YOU feel uncomfortable, use blogging to show YOUR passions, YOUR hobbies, it will get indexed by the internet and YOUR voice will get further, it will get amplified through the Search Engines; BUT respect the Ethics and Netiquette, as ALSO the Copyright!!!

.

: Are YOU struggling to write a post!? NOT knowing WHERE to START and WHAT to do!? Create a private (NOT public) one. Chose YOUR TOPIC (Headline) and write some keywords each day and read THEM till YOU find the courage to START and follow, it works 😉 I do so ALSO! e.g. see PIC please…

SO, there a lot of blogging platforms, which one to chose!? I advice YOU to use WordPress, I do so also. It is easy to START with and there are a lot of HELP tutorials about it; please check below:

WHAT Is eSkills? WHY Does The “e” Stand Before?

Manifesto: get an overview of challenges & opportunities outlined by experts .

[Start text from the MANIFESTO 2015] Much has been written about the digital skills gap and whether Europe is falling behind in the race for digital talent. After some spectacular declines in ICT education enrollments and graduate numbers in the first years of the new millennium, the European Commission developed a long-term e-skills strategy to reverse the worrying trend. Now, and since 2010, the number of ICT students is growing again. The good news today is that there are signs that the rate of growth is quicker than expected. [END text from the MANIFESTO 2015].

Andragogy, Adult Teaching!? WHAT Is Different From Normal Student Teaching!?

students-workforceIt is a question which I get asked very often “Andragogy, Adult Teaching!? WHAT Is Different From Normal Student Teaching!?“. Well, first remember that adults and seniors are OUT of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> since long or very long, THEY are NOT used anymore for learning! That is a very important fact to consider first before YOU start teaching adults and seniors. ALSO, adults and seniors are NOW (as out of school) mostly more focused on the benefits THEY could have in their private life and are willing to learn stuff which fits to their needs in private life!

Another very important point to consider is that a lot of adults, seniors have a FEAR against schools and school-teaching, they made bad experiences with teachers AND still thinking on the stress with tests! AND they are used to an OLD outdated EDUcation System which told them that learning is finished once reached the degree (the diploma in the pockets)! BTW: a RETHINKING of EDUcation for <===> Life-Long Learning is a MUST! As well as how the diplomas are getting handled and valued: e.g. A diploma today doesn’t show any professional development made!!! My proposition is to create the diplomas as: first diploma after school is “A, B,C etc…”, then the professional development (followed courses) should get added such as e.g. A1-2015-1: first professional development made in 2015, one course. A1-2015-5 first professional development made in 2015, five courses, and so on…

This would make the diplomas more valuable as the workforce would recognize them much more than normal ones where they don’t see straight on if a person has followed courses after school or not…

THE factor time is ALSO very important, as said already above, adults and seniors need MORE time to learn as NOT used anymore for learning! Prepare YOUR courses by considering longer sessions!

And as (already) MOST of YOU know me, a music video, related to the TOPIC 😉

.

.

Chose ALSO a room who doesn’t look sterile (white color) as it would remind them school again! And of course DON’T give the courses in a school! Sounds strange!? Think on the psychological background of fear 😉 Make the learners feel comfortable!

And last but not least, DON’T teach adults, seniors with a normal pedagogy, as THEY won’t accept it to get treated as 12 year old persons!!! THEY ARE OUT OF SCHOOL and they want to get treated as adult, <===> mature persons<===>!

SO… How To Teach Adults, Seniors!?

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-aigainformation1First of all, I mentioned it already above, DON’T let them feel like being in school and that YOU are a teacher, educator! Tell them that YOU will be THEIR coach who is guiding them and NOT teaching them and that THEY have a certain autonomy in the “Learning Room” (NOT Classroom!) They are allowed to move around in the “Learning Room”, searching help among their peers by respecting the noise level, copying from each other <===> YES, copying is allowed, OH WHAT FUN <===> everything which was forbidden in the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> is allowed here, hey that makes engaging them and they have fun as well 🙂

As THEIR coach YOU take care of an individual learning, YOU assist the persons in their learning, DON’T FORGET about the learning rhythm, one size doesn’t fit all! Some persons need more time…

YOU may use a beamer (or a digital whiteboard, depending on YOUR budget…) to introduce first about WHAT the learners will attend to learn where YOU show ALSO the <===> Learning Path <===> which YOU have prepared for them, so they will know up from the beginning where the destination goes with ALL the differentstations“, they will feel comfortable as they can visualize it, they will know as well WHAT skills they will acquire, less unknown stuff to think about…

An example below:

.

programmerman-animatedFacts to consider and advice:

Adults and especially seniors are NOT anymore used to LEARNing! By knowing this YOU need to take care about it: YOU SHOULD explain that to YOUR LEARNers and tell THEM that they shouldn’t fear, that they should tell YOU when being in trouble, YOU should tell them that YOU take ALL the necessary time so that THEY will understand it, YOU should encourage them at any moment so that they will find the pleasure to LEARN 😉 YOU SHOULD use Empathy, observing them and find out WHO are those who are shy; the ones WHO won’t tell you when there is a problem. YOU SHOULD interact with them, looking over their shoulders and finding out WHERE the problem is.

That is the hardest part BUT the MOST IMPORTANT one as when they understood that they could find confidence in YOU, then they will advance in their LEARNing, THEY NEED confidence in YOU and in THEMSELVES!

Thus meaning: make the LEARNing individual! Take care of each person till they have understood it. It is like <===> differentiated instruction <===> EDUcation, BUT more coaching than teaching. In one phrase, differentiated instruction is primarily suiting instructional means to meet individual learning needs.

Considering the “Learning Room“:

As mentioned already, make sure that the room isn’t sterile, NOT white! Consider the psychology of colors as it works, my 9 years experience with adults and seniors (NOT teaching) coaching. I used a pastel yellow color in the “Learning Room“, why!?

Yellow adds optimism to your home, prompting feelings of happiness in all who enter. Yellow activates memory, stimulates the nervous system, promotes communication and sparks creativity. And THAT is WHAT WE want in learning, isn’t it 😉

Learn more:

Make ALSO sure that there is an extra room available, where the adults, seniors can jump in to drink a beverage and eventually have some chatting with other participants, make them feel relax

.

SO… WHAT To Teach THEM And How!?

Flipchart-man-318584_1280-Public Domain-Andragogy

Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.

As mentioned already, adults and seniors learn differently and slower (consider the time fact); they want stuff which they can use in their private life! SO… WHAT could be those interests!? Did I say interests, YES, it is exactly this WHERE YOU need to focus when giving courses to adults and seniors! Before starting a course I do every time an introduction session where myself and others present themselves, after the introduction I ask everybody to come in front to me and writing with capital letters on a Flipchart their interests, they could use ALSO 4 different colors (red, green, blue, black).

WHY this!? First of all, there is a bit action as they have ALL to move from their places which is different from <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> and the color they chose is ALSO a sign of their character and mood… By the way: I ask them later also WHY they were choosing that color, just to open a discussion and to make them curios about next steps; they will be aware ALSO that I observe what is going around me and that I give THEM attention

WE will have a look all together NOW on the Flipchart and to find out the common interests, thus meaning: there will be a lot of people probably (mostly) who have THE same interests (hobbies) and NOW everybody knows WHO has the same hobby. WE created already an interest community without knowing it as these people will later talk together and probably will make an exchange of experiences 😉 It is up from there WE will build up OUR course(s)!

YOU certainly will encounter these hobbies: cooking, traveling, festivals, photos, gardening, cinema, reading, swimming, different sports, wandering, cards playing, taking videos, music, motorcycles, cars and more… That are the most common ones by my  experience over 9 years.

Some examples of blogs and curation about gardening (flowers), cooking, festivals:

.

NOW WE know much more about OUR course participants and WE have a starting base: as anybody mostly is proud about WHAT they are doing and easily willing to talk about it (mostly…) WE will show THEM on How-To they can do it through using ICT by explaining THEM that more people would see THEIR exploits and knowledge by using curation, blogging and Social Media. WE will explain them ALSO how it will work by examples, so that THEY can see it visually. And WHY NOT, for the creative ones, how to use “ThingLink“. By experience, women are MORE creative than men, just saying…

SO… How Can I Say That This (The PracTICE) Is Working!?

programmerman-animatedWell, I was a pioneer in my country Luxembourg (Europe) already in 2002 where I gave pedagogical courses about ICT to a wide range of the population as up from 12 years old (even younger when together with a parent) to 79 years old with different nationalities. ALSO there were two days in the week reserved (booked by planing inside the school) for the primary school where they could use OUR “ICT LEARNing room” by my coaching to learn the (at that time) NEW technologies. Schools didn’t have YET computers in the classes at that time and I was working very close together with the teachers and helped also to convince the responsible people from the commune about the necessity of computers in the classrooms, which worked 😉

SO… WHAT was that “ICT LEARNing Room“, called “Internetstuff“!? And WHY was my “Internetstuff” DIFFERENT from ALL the others in Luxembourg!?

A bit History and Story Telling: What is a “Internetstuff”? It was a project by the “European Commission” to bring the “ICT” to ALL the inhabitants in any commune in the European countries. They called it at that time “eEurope” and in Luxembourg it was a special task force, called “eLuxembourg” that was charged about it. SO, they decided to create special places where the population could learn through courses about “ICT”, which they called “Internetstuffen”.

Learn more (in French):

The Government in Luxembourg was looking at the time to find competent people to give those courses about ICT and they were advertising in the newspapers, where I made my application. I was selected and had to follow a 4 months long education through special tailored courses about the How-To to give pedagogical courses with ICT, a bit hard at that time as I was 45 years old already, BUT I did it and I found my vocation!

I offered my services and skills to different communes and it was in ETTELBRUCK (North of the country and 30 km away from where I am living) that I found a new job and a new adventure as a pioneer. Apart from giving courses about and with ICT, NO ONE of the responsible persons had a clue about the How-To, so they told me “Do what You want, You should know what…“, OK, I was perplex and ALONE to do this job!

First I elaborated the opening hours, than I created a “brochure” which was sent to all the houses in that small city (8k inhabitants) to inform them about this new service offered by the commune. I created also a “member card” of a value of 25€ for a whole year who gave the participants the right to visit the place to use only the internet (very few had Internet in 2002) and/or to take part of courses. The place was open on a 5/8, 5 days from Monday to Saturday from 8h30 am to 11h30 am and from 13h30 to 17h30. Monday and Wednesday mornings were reserved for Primary School classes from 08h am to 11h30 am. Saturday and Sunday was closed.

There were also evening courses organized and I collected about 1k6 (1,600) hours of overtime work during 1 1/2 year (non payed hours)! I couldn’t do that job anymore alone, BUT I din’t get a co-worker allowed neither. NO budget for it! I decided NOT anymore giving evening courses and giving the courses on a different way: people (learners) could visit the place whenever they wanted during the opening hours (only in the day) and I would give them courses individually and on different disciplines (security, Office, Photo Editing, website building, email, Skype…).

The learners had more autonomy, I let them work by PracTICE after first having them explained about the How-To shown with a beamer and then also on their own PC (there were 10 PCs in the Learning Room). They could come WHEN they wanted and for how long they wanted. They were completely FREE, no MUST, NO STRESS… I explained them, showed them, observed them (studied their behavior…) and interacted only when needed, when I felt that they must get a bit help to continue. I encouraged them to try by error till they would have learned it and when learned I showed them some tricks by giving advice on How-To do BETTER. It was ME who adjusted and adapted to them, a win-win situation. They learned slowly but surely and once the basics understood (the most important) they learned the other stuff to learn much more quick as they felt more confident about ICT. I encouraged them to practice at home which they all did. I asked them where they still have problems when practicing at home and WE repeated it on another way when possible, otherwise same procedure…

I was also constantly updating my “Professional Development” by reading lots of books (insatiable…):

Autonomy, TEAM, self-directed, autodidact, coaching, guide, analyzing learners constantly, adapting constantly, FAQ’s, PLN, PKM, SKYPE, VOIP Telephony, image editing, eMail, collaboration,

In 2015 Coaching-Mentoring Is Seen As An Education Difference-Maker

[START Text from On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning] Coaching is a difference-maker in education.  Think of the mindset evident in high-performing athletic teams, chess teams, even actors and other entertainers. Content providers are valuable, but that is not what makes learning organizations distinct, especially not those that seek to reach and provide a high-quality education to a full spectrum of learners. The same thing is true as we continue to implement things like competency-based education models. Many celebrate the way CBE can reduce the cost of college degrees, increasing access and opportunity, and addressing critical workforce needs. However, if cost reduction happens at the expense of great coaching and mentoring, I am concerned that we will make little progress in the democratization of education. The “haves and have nots” of education depend largely upon the prerequisite skills needed to take advantage of newer and emerging learning environments ranging from CBE to MOOCs, self-directed learning to self-organized learning environments. [END Text from On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning]

Feedback, Reflecting A MUST-Adapting Constantly

As already mentioned above, I asked a lot about WHERE some could have problems to understand and encouraged the learners to tell me, even I asked them to write down on the Flipchart questions they would have eventually. WE collected them all and when they were fit enough on the keyboard I let them create themselves (with my little help) a FAQ’s list (Frequently Asked Questions) and a glossary, see example below please.

Please find below my blog posts about FAQ’s:

Keywords: win-win situation… honesty, straight talking, dealing with mature people, provoking could be (I do…) welcome with a bit irony and humor, dealing with humans, different characters needs to get analyzed before action, a bit courage to go out of normal,

Is My Proposed Way Of Coaching With ICT ONLY For Adult Learning!?

sharing iconThere is a lot of common from the above mentioned with youth coaching and could be applied as well for them! WHEN YOU make youth feeling being accepted as adults, they will give YOU more respect and it will be a GOOD atmosphere for BETTER learning also! I had teens visiting my “Learning Room [Internetstuff]” for the ONLY purpose to listen and to observe when I gave courses with coaching to the participants. They came in their FREE time when there wasn’t school and made their homework while observing also my “style of teaching, as they said”. I got told by some of them that they learned MORE in 2 hours about ICT than they learned in a month in school. And THAT is THE difference between theory and <===> PracTICE! <===>.

LEARNing To LEARN-Where To Start!?

In previous posts WE were discussing about the design of LEARNing for ===> DigitalCitizenShip <===, the different possibilities. Now WE will see about the How-To on where to start, my advice by PracTICE. Let us remember what was taught on previous posts.

.

Click the above image, please, to access the article.

.

Let us ALSO remember the MOST important, see below, please.

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

SO, NOW where to start?

WE will use the following design to make sure to NOT FORGET something. The main topics are ===> Proactive THINKing <=== together with ===> Critical THINKing <=== AND ===> CyberSecurity <===. Remember the word ===> together <===, as it is part of an effective and efficient 21st Century EDUcation! More text explaining…+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

French (Français): Danger connu est danger vaincu ! Mieux vaut prévoir que valoir ! Un enfant averti en vaut deux. English: Forewarned is Forearmed! Deutsch (German): Gefahr erkannt is Gefahr gebannt! Vorsicht heisst die Mutter der Porzellankiste!

« Good habits formed at youth make all the difference. » Aristotle

YOU are STILL feeling YOUNG, aren’t YOU 😉

.

In ONLY ONE course YOU will LEARN about WHAT YOU need for 21st Century EDUcation, the way on How-To by using PracTICE, of course YOU will need to UPDATE as certainly there will be NEW techniques evolving 😉 ===> Professional Development <===.

.

By applying the here learned, YOU will know THE way for ===> LEARNing-To-LEARN <=== and being able to forward it to YOUR LEARNers.

In ONLY ONE course YOU will LEARN about WHAT YOU need for 21st Century EDUcation, the way on How-To by using PracTICE. WHEN getting used about the mentioned PracTICEs YOU can apply THEM on each course(s) YOU give…

.

.

FlowChart-Final-Version

Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.

programmerman-animatedALL the above in the design Flowchart will get used for the LEARNing about ===> DigitalCitiZENship <===.

My advice is to start first with OUR AND OTHERS protection (Proactive THINKing AND CyberSecurity) as WE need to stay secure  and safe before WE surf the world wide web, OR as one can say actually now the ===> wild wild web <===. It’s similar to sex, first the condom before the action 😉 OR first the vaccine before traveling to countries where WE know that there are serious risks to get infected!

WE will use my FREE courses below, it’s 100% PracTICE:

.

sharing-iconSecond would be the curation and I suggest the following topics:

.

Lots of stuff I learned.

.

WHY is curation so IMPORTANT!? Through curation YOU will build YOUR ===> “PKM” (Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management <===, check below, please for deeper LEARNing:

Thus meaning, through curation and by having build YOUR OWN PKM, YOU have created YOUR OWN database corresponding to YOUR way of LEARNing, YOUR choice of resources!

.

.

THE above mentioned are NOT ONLY promises, it is working well as it was made in PracTICE ALSO by @ICTPHMS, Mr. Dan KIRSCH. See ALSO OUR ===> Global-Collaboration <=== below, please:

The students (LEARNers) will acquire the following eSkills:

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

PracTICE TIP

LEARNing from websites without having an internet connection:

Thought that YOU can’t access websites without an internet connection? THINK twice 😉

HTTrack is a free (GPL, libre/free software) and easy-to-use offline browser utility.

It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site’s relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the “mirrored” website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system.

Personal TIP: I used it to copy my online courses onto a USB-Stick, SO even when during a course there isn’t any internet connection (YES, that can happen…) YOU have every time YOUR backed-up version 😉 NO break of the courses!

.

students-workforceAND there are also the “Apps“, BUT don’t forget that THEY are ONLY facilitators, they are NOT the change in 21st Century EDUcation; THE change is applying the pedagogy and the 21st Century techniques together.

In the above mentioned links YOU will see how WE learned together in OUR ===> Global Collaboration Blog <=== by ===> Coaching <=== through using the “DM” (Direct Messages) from Twitter, YES WE used Twitter, it works perfect 😉 The same as WE used OUR blogs to communicate and to show OUR LEARNing to others, so that THEY could learn also from us.

Authentic PracTICE Through Global Collaboration

GUST-AVRIL2014-800px-2[GM] The authors of this blog post “@ICTPHMS (Dan KIRSCH‘s Blog)” and “@knolinfos (Gust MEES‘s Blog)” have met each other on Social MediaTwitter” and decided one day to work together on a common blog about “Digital CitizenShip“, a “Global Collaboration” from authors of the USA and Luxembourg (Europe) was born. Find below, please, OUR collaboration blog:

.

[GM]: below, part of the discussed on twitter

Added on 07/01/2015:

Lots of stuff I learned

Ideas:  using scenarios where the learners (students) play different roles to explain about GOOD and BAD behaviour on Social Media and let THEM blog about it. After the blogging THEY might ALSO create comics in a dialogue style whereTHEIR thoughts are included, such as I did in my blog post here ===> https://gustmeesen.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/why-ict-security-why-the-need-to-secure-a-computer/ <===.

I created these comics with dialogues with the following online program:

If you have the time, you might later create ALSO a magazine where the learners (students) bring in THEIR comics. Find some propositions of magazines below, please:

WHY do WE use a bunch of different so-called tools to LEARN about Digital Citizenship?

Please check the below picture, who explains 😉

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

I will let “Dan KIRSCH” explain to YOU in detail about WHAT WE were working together

.

[DK] Dan KIRSCH‘s insight

Dan KIRSCHI have utilized the collaboration with Gust via twitter on the topic of Digital Citizenship within my 8th grade ICT classes. Currently, I am teaching 3 classes with approximately 30 students in each. One of our curriculum standards is to teach Digital Citizenship/Internet Safety. I began to investigate different ways of teaching this to my 8th graders where it could be authentic and actually “practice what is being taught“. Through collaboration with Gust and other social media colleagues on twitter I began to utilize blogging (Edublogs) as a platform to teach Digital Citizenship.

Each student has their own blog, which is contained under my class blog. In this platform, we treat our blogs as our “social network” where students comment on blog prompts given by me or themselves containing information on Digital Citizenship, real-life scenarios, and social media. It is also used to teach other “edtechskills; such as inserting media, using embed code, and RSS Feeds. This is the fourth year I have used edublogs and I enjoy reading what my students produce; especially the reflections and connections they make with one another.

It’s amazing to see how students communicate via the technology “more” than they would face to face; especially on how to become a positive Digital Citizen! Recently, I have begun to archive their posts on to storify (with no last names) to use for future classes you can access this via my edublog: http://mrkirsch.edublogs.org

The following video is one of my students who was interviewed by one of our local TV stations who came I did a story within our my classroom. The story focused on Social Media, but with an emphasis on Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety. I share this; not as I method of “bragging” but demonstrating that teaching students to be aware of what they share online “digital footprint” could and will have a lasting affect on their future. My goal is that I never have to hear about one of my former students being “trapped” because of something they said, posted, and/or shared on social media or the internet.

New Post: 04/03/15

Teaching Digital Citizenship through Authentic Practice ==> through the creation of infographics! The following (see link below) are my student(s) created infographics. They created their infographics on a specific topic of Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety and posted it on their edublog “social media platform.” Students are in 8th grade (12-13 year old).

The objective of the unit was ==> Students will create an infographic presenting student researched information on a specific Internet Safety Topic.

.

Understanding what your digital footprint says about you. The following blog post (prompt) ==> check link here <== was given to my 8th grade students as a more interpersonal digital citizenship reflection. The previous posts have been more focused on the “broad” perspective of Digital Citizenship and what it is ==> what it means. <== The objective was for students to take an interpersonal “look” at themselves and reflect on the ==>HOW TO<== become & maintain a positive digital footprint as they progress through their high school years,  and into college. My goal as their ICT instructor is to make students  realize that once they enter college and are “away” from parents/guardians peer pressure can and often times does involve them in negative way. The point is ==> teaching students to be aware of this now they will be able to think twice before they “make the choice” to share/post negative material on the internet/social media, which in return could damage their “digital footprints.”

Teaching Digital Citizenship Through Comics

Objective:
The objective of the post is for students to learn about Digital Citizenship through stories.

Main Idea:
The following link is to my 8th grade students edublogs. The focus of this blog post come from Gust MEES. My students created comic strips utilizing the online website Pixton. The objective of the post is for students to learn about Digital Citizenship through stories. They are required to have a Digital Citizenship “dilemma” and at the end of their story they must have a positive outcome and/or resolution to the situation. There scenarios can be anything related to Digital Citizenship/Internet Safety. Please check the link below to see a gallery of my students finished Digital Citizenship comics.

The following link is a curate blog reflections from my students on Digital Citizenship/Internet Safety. This was a “lead-up” activity to the comic strips seen above. The curation tool I utilized for this is Storify.

Teaching with Content Curation (added February, 3, 2015)

Content curation is the “…process of collecting, organizing and displaying information relevant to a particular topic. Teacher content curation can be used by students and students can be asked to show expertise with examples of curation.” In my 8th grade ICT class we will be completing webquests on content curation as a teach method of introducing students to “Content Curation.” The following text reviews what content curation is and it’s purpose, along with several content curation platforms, what a webquest is, and followed by a lesson plan I will use in my classes.

Storify:

  • create stories or timelines using social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Flipboard:

  • Flipboard.
  • .
  • Flipboard is your personal magazine.
  • It’s a single place to discover, collect and share the news you care about.
  • Add your favorite social networks, publications and blogs to stay connected with topics and people closest to you.

Introduction into Content Curation

What is Content Curation?

Content curation is the “…process of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a specific theme.  The work  involves  sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing information.”  A content curator picks the best content that is “…important and relevant to share with their community (in the case our class community). It isn’t unlike what a museum curator does to produce an exhibition:   They identify the theme, they provide the context, they decide which paintings to hang on the wall, how they should be annotated, and how they should be displayed for the public.”

Content curation is not about collecting links or being an information pack rat, it is more about “…putting them into a context with organization, annotation, and presentation. Content curators provide a customized selection of the best and most relevant resources on a very specific topic or theme” (in this case ours will be on Digital Citizenship, ICT, and Educational Technology). A content curator “…continually seeks,  makes sense of,  and shares the best and most relevant content on a particular topic online.”

Why is Content Curation Valuable?

Individuals and organizations are making, sharing media, and content all over the social web.   For example, on Facebook the average user creates 90 pieces of content each month.  If you “…multiply that by the 800 million Facebook users,  it isn’t surprising that  data or content on the Internet is  measured in billions of gigabytes.” Essentially, we are living an era of content overload!!! A content curator offers high value to anyone looking for quality content because finding that information (and making sense of it) requires more and more time, attention, and focus.

For individuals and organizations, content curation can help establish their “thought” leadership and capture attention in today’s information “overloaded” world.    Content curation can “…help your organization become the go-to authority on an issue or topic area.”   It can be done as simply as writing a blog post (this is excatly what we will be doing with our edublogs in my classes) with links or sharing annotated links on Twitter around your topic.

Getting Started

This questionnaire (citation on pic) can help you think through a plan for content curation before you dive into the curation tools.  There has been an explosion of tools and you can distracted by useless features.    Even better, “… perhaps focus on the skills with the tools you know how to use already.”   You might want to integrate the process of content curation into a channel you’re already using (in my class students will be including this within a category on their blogs).

 Creating a Webquest

programmerman-animatedWebquests are useful teaching tools for educators. An imaginative webquest can capture the attention of a student as he or she learns about any number of topics. For instance, I have chosen to use my classes edublogs as our webquest platform where we can incorporate curated content on Digital Citizenship.

A teacher who wants to bring his or her own webquest ideas to life must make a detailed plan. Some teachers begin by choosing a web quest template. There are online resources available that outline the specific elements of a webquest. For example, a webquest has an introduction that explains its purpose to students. A webquest also includes a task that lets students know what they are expected to do. Next, the process sets out a path for students to follow that leads them to relevant information. Those are just a few of the steps that a teacher needs to fulfill in order to make an effective webquest.

==> Mr. Kirsch’s Sample Content Curation Webquest <==

Teaching with Content Curation Lesson Plan

  • Focus Question: Do students know where to get quality information from the Internet?
  • Additional Questions: 1. What resources do teachers need to find quality information on the Internet (i.e., content curation)?
  • 2. How should the Internet be used in the classroom?

Lesson Goals/Objectives: To get students to think how to best use the Internet in their classroom.

Activity Description:

  • Spend time discussing the basics of Internet searches (e.g., have students with more experience help others). See Evaluating Websites from the University of California Berkley in Resources. Talk about Search engines and other ways to find information (2nd and 3rd tier investigation).
  • Create a webquest (using our edublogs) and have students write about what sites they come up with using our “curated content.”
  • Have the students support why their “curated content” was appropriate for this lesson within their blog posts.
  • Students will then be assigned a topic (social media, educational technology, digital citizenship, and/or online security) to begin their curated content. Once content as been established and shared via WordPress or social media the students will then blog (webquest) about their thoughts on curated content.

How to Use Storify:

Luckily, it’s easy.

storify by @ICTPHMS.

  1. First, create an account at Storify (you can log in with Twitter or Facebook).
  2. Click the blue “Create a Story” button in the top right hand corner.
  3. Look at the right side of the new screen where the icons of your favorite social media websites reside.
  4. Click on any social media icon (like Twitter), then put in a username for that network you want to search. You’ll see all the recent Tweets from that person/hashtag/search query.
  5. Now, start dragging content from the right hand panel from the social media networks you are searching into the left hand panel where you are telling your story. Add words or titles. You are finished!! A story told in text and pictures via social media updates.

sharing-iconWE can’t say any more that CyberSecurity is ONLY for IT-Experts as the internet is a shared ecosphere where every body has responsibility! Actions of some people can easily affect everyone else, thus meaning: WHEN NOT having installed protection software (updated antivirus) YOUR computer and/or smartphone(s) could get infected by malware and YOU will infect ALSO OTHERS who are in contact with YOU; it will become epidemic!

Twitter Chat | The Economic Impact Of Cybercrime

.

SecChat McAfee

On Thursday, September 4th there will be #SecChat who will explore the  The Economic Impact Of Cybercrime and is an hour-long Twitter chat. I got invited through Twitter by

.

#SecChat

.

After long reflection I decided to create a blog about my advice as I think that it would be very difficult to answer these questions by Tweets. There are TOO MANY links and information, as well as advice to share that in the mass of shared Tweets they would get lost 😉 This allows me then in the Tweet on the Chat to post ONLY one link, the link to this blog, where ALL the necessary information are included and I could concentrate on the other Tweets much more easy!

AND I could ALSO use this blog post for my FREE courses about CyberSecurity!

As a reminder (ALSO for me), here below the blog posts about WHAT would get discussed:

I suggest to read my blog post from a previous Twitter Chat WHERE already a lot was discussed, please:

Here, below, is about the #SecChat:

.

#SecChat about

.

So here we go, my questions:

  • Q1: What security risks do SMBs need to consider when starting a business and why?
  • Q2: CyberSecurity is OUR ALL Responsibility! SHOULDN’T the basics of CyberSecurity getting taught in schools up from the early age?
  • Q3: WHY aren’t CyberSecurity professionals, especially CyberSecurity companies present at schools!?
  • Q4: WHAT could get done to lowering Cybercrime?

Q1: What security risks do SMBs need to consider when starting a business and why?

programmerman-animatedWell, first of all SMBs don’t have to forget that they deal with employees and that THE weakest link in the security chain is the human!

.

Please check my following blog posts who explain in detail:

.

As nearly everyone is using a smartphone today so there is ALSO a MUST to consider a “BYOD-Policy” (Bring Your Own Device) as the use of smartphones could be a BIG security risk to the SMB’s as MOST employees don’t have any knowledge about the basics of Cyber-Security, even that there smartphones and/or tablets, laptops could be infected with virus, trojans, keylogger

Please read my blog post about BYOD below:

.

Q2: CyberSecurity is OUR ALL Responsibility! SHOULDN’T the basics of CyberSecurity getting taught in schools up from the early age?

My personal answer is a clear YES! My prepared FREE courses below:

AND Today on September 1st 2014 I found this on the internet which I highly WELCOME! Coding in the curriculum for Five-Year-Old with introduction to CyberSecurity, GREAT!

Q4: WHAT could get done to lowering Cybercrime?

Well, there are a lot of possibilities, who are MOSTLY related to ===> EDUCATION <=== and while using Social Media. Personally I use very often Twitter to send my advice to my readers. I started ages ago the ===> Friday Security Check Day <===, hashtag is ===> #FSCD <=== as a reminder and to wake up people to get THE reflexes, check below, please.

.

#FSCD

.

I would feel happy if anybody else would join in to the ===> #FSCD <=== to remind people and to give them good advice, and/or to retweet it, thanks.

.

Concerning the ===> Internet Of Things <=== here below my advice. Would be good if discussed…

More about the Internet Of Things:

And for me the MOST IMPORTANT is to teach ===> Cyber Hygiene <=== in schools and in companies! THE user (us ALL) must have basics knowledge of Cyber Security as it is a national security issue and also a priority for the economy!

.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month Advocates Good “Cyber Hygiene”

.

Check also what CIO.GOV An Official Website of the United States Government says: Surfing the web. Social networking. Shopping. Even the most innocuous online activities can pose a threat to our nation’s cybersecurity, and all Americans should play a part in protecting it.

.

My curation about Cyber-Hygiene

I advocate ===> CyberHygiene <=== and ===> Proactive THINKing <=== since ages and the below action makes me feel happy!

.

CyberHygiene

.

.

I started ALSO days ago to amplify the word ===> #CyberHygiene <=== by posting each day about it on Twitter, see below! WELCOME to join in 😉

I am convinced about that such actions SHOULD get used to make the users (us ALL) ===> #WakeUP <=== for a more secure internet!

How To Use Curation For Learning and Even Teaching

I will give you some visual examples below who show you, so you can have a direct impression of it. No need to talk too much (what most of the teachers and educators do, sorry…), we go straight to the point…

Final word

chat iconA security by 100% doesn’t exist and probably NEVER will exist (I am sure about THAT!) , remind the human behavior…, and ALSO  the bugs in programming code of software!

There is one word which any SMB MUST remember ===> Proactive THINKing <===, anything is changing that quick that nobody could act mostly in time!

Stay informed about what is happening on a daily base about Cyber-Security to get prepared for the UNKNOWN! It’s the letter “I” in “ICT“, which means “Information“! Once NEW information gathered which isn’t known YET by the employees, then comes the letter “C“, which means “Communication“! Inform YOUR employees and ICT-Staff as soon as possible, remember that in the “Security Chainanyone MUST be strong!

===> THE MOST IMPORTANT when making training is to NOT use TOO MUCH technology words so that the employees might be able to UNDERSTAND! <===

Ideas For A More Secure Internet

Since already 1999 I was publishing online about the risks and Cyber Security and by seeing the unwillingness of people to learn about it I was going for ===> #DeepTHINKing <=== about WHAT could get done, here below my ideas:

.

Some of the above ideas could get made into practice in ===> #MakerSpaces <=== and/or in ===> #Coding places <===, check below, please:

.

I encourage my readers and followers from Twitter to be ===> lurkers <=== on the #SecChat to learn about it, thanks.
