CitiZEN-Science: The PracTICE

Through the Maker-Movement and IoT (Internet of Things) there is already a LOT happening and different Networks are collecting Data through Sensors and make them available for everybody to have access and study them! Such sensors are e.g.:

  • Air Quality
  • Meteo
  • Street traffic
  • Radiation
  • People (counter) traffic
  • Water Quality
  • Wind velocity
  • Radar for excess of car speed
  • Inundation prevention
  • Observations on:
    • Nature (birds, etc.)
    • Archaeology discovering

Those, above mentioned  applications can even be assembled together and so being a precious source for communes and Governments! Mostly such projects are done with an ARDUINO and/or Raspberry PI based micro controller and a mini computer: The main difference between them is Arduino is microcontroller board while Raspberry PI is a mini computer.

Thus meaning: that fits perfect for the Maker-Movement and could GET integrated easily into STEM projects!

Well, after following for a long time different possibilities on the How-To to get globally access to such IMPORTANT Big-Data for everyone, I found out THAT “The Things Network” is a perfect way! Please find below the address and the projects:

It is based on the “LoRaWAN“, check below, please, for more information:

Blog post will GET updated and/or new ones will get posted as it is a very interesting Movement! Stay tuned 😉

Meanwhile check the beginning of this blog post, please:

SO, you are a retired EDUcator, TEACHer, Instructor, LEHRENDER: WHAT to do NOW?!!

programmerman-animatedWell, that was the question I was asking myself when I became retired in 2014. As I did innovation in Modern-EDUcation in my country Luxembourg, there was NO WAY to give that up, BTW! SO, years before my retirement I was already present on Social-Media Twitter (2009), Facebook, and I did Curation (2011), as I was blogging (2010-2011) ALSO, actually very successful with > 197K (197.132) views (November 2019).

Giving up something which was already well known worldwide, was NO OPTION! Well, please check below HOW YOU can stay informed and trying to help others as well; remember: you are NOT anymore in the “School-Cocoon” and MORE FREE to say WHAT YOU want!! YOU DON’T have to go to “stupid” meetings anymore which are time-killing and mostly useless!!!

Check ALSO please:

A BIG difference, use it, please to make a CHANGE!! Others will listen and maybe follow your advice for a BETTER EDUcation, a Modern-EDUcation! Advice: Please check below to follow and to stay Up-To-Date!

AND, why not starting with tinkering and coding, being part of the Maker-Community and trying it out to be able to share it with your community in the MakerED, Maker-Spaces? You have time NOW, use it, please for the benefit of the LEARNERS! Check below please:

NEW Words, Trends to Know and to LEARN about in 21st Century

programmerman2Are YOU feeling overwhelmed with strange words, NEW trends, when you are reading and following posts, tweets, articles about/and in Social Media!? Well, I can understand YOU!!! There are SO MUCH, if I wouldn’t do curation, I wouldn’t understand it anymore as well, to be honest! 😉 Through my daily curation I see it and I read those articles, from WHERE I learn a lot as an autodidact. WHEN there are some words which I DON’T understand I am going MOSTLY to Wikipedia to find its explication and if NOT sufficient, I use GOOGLE and other online resources to know MORE about it!

For ME it’s THE BEST way (Curation) to learn and to stay up-to-date with my Professional Development! I tried out a lot of different ways after being online since 1998 and believe me, please, it’s the fastes way to keep it UP! 😉 Through Curation I build up my <===> PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management from where I can use it in ANY of my blogs, twitter posts and other Social Media to share it to people willing to learn.

Let us FIRST have a look about WHAT Curation and PKM is (first stuff to read and bring into PracTICE) before WE continue with THE strange words and trends later:

SO, let’s have a look on some (actually a lot…) NEW words and trends in EDUcation and WHO will influence EDUcation below, as THEY are actually running in Real-World, let us START first with the words:

Check also, please:

P.S.: The present words with NOT YET a link will get updated later, otherwise I wouldn’t finish this blog post! 😉

Dynamic Learning

Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With digital tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamicThis concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.

Through Curation, Social Media twitter and by building a PLN this is perfectly possible!

BTW : Did YOU actually realize that NOW it’s the PracTICE WHICH is dominating the Real-World before it EVEN is taught by EDUcation, a BIG CHANGE, isn’t it!!! Because of Entrepreneurship (bold actions…) the internet helped to CHANGE the world and flipped EDUcation to bring it MORE close to the needs of the workforce/Industry!!!

The NEW Pedagogy is MORE about the learners, students and to put THEM into the drivers seat; looking to find a Win-Win situation about THE How-To to GET THEM learning together in a team (EVEN outside the School-Cocoon with Social Media…) and to prepare THEM for the workforce/labor/industry by being able for <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> for a Life-Long Learning once out of school!

What’s the secret of success while innovating? | Motivation, Courage, Engagement, NEVER Give UP…

What’s the secret of success while innovating? | Motivation, Courage, Engagement, NEVER Give UP…

.

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

What’s the secret of success while innovating?

I hear you screaming already: I would like to be innovative, I even have some ideas BUT I am fearing about WHAT OTHERS would say and think about!! To be honest, NEVER look about WHAT OTHERS would say, innovation is something NEW and the new will GET up from the beginning NO acceptance, apart from a few which Professional-Development is Up-To-Date, and you probably (mostly) will GET even very hard criticism because people tend for “Listening to reply and NOT for understanding”!!

With ICT in EDUcation and while being (nearly) Up-To-Date with your Professional-Development while you have read the most important books about Modern-EDUcation from renowned researchers and by being online and using Social Media, especially Twitter, you certainly “feel” what MUST change to give OUR students, learners, BEST EDUcation. DO SO, I am pushing you if necessary, the world needs people with courage, motivation, engagement to bring Modern-EDUcation farther!!

And I am NOT talking about tools, Apps, THEY are ONLY facilitators; THE main so-called tool is YOU!!! YOU are modeling the statues (your learners, students) from a raw piece to a Master-Piece because of YOUR talents, knowledge, experience, Up-To-Date Professional-Development. It’s YOUR talent, like in arts, YOUR creativity who sparkles over to the learners, students with YOUR motivation, engagement, passion…

IF NO effort is brought in, NO results will come out!!

NOW, you know the secret ingredients (it’s like cooking…) and then comes the way of the How-To, there WE need to use ALSO Social Media, especially Twitter to connect with the students, learners!! Did I say connecting with students, learners on Twitter and learning together with the whole world; an OPEN place, NOT a closed classroom!!??? Sounds strange, isn’t it!??? Well, it isn’t strange at all, as it is PracTICE for the students, learners, to GET straight in to WHAT they will get used once in the workforce. It’s actually the BEST PracTICE they can get.

As on January 2018 I just have seen ONE Twitter-Chat (if you know another one, let me know please…) WHERE students, learners (average age 20 years old) were involved and it comes from Canada, the University of Ottawa, run by Pierre LEVY. Please check below some screenshots from the transcript of the Twitter-Chat:

.

By following that Twitter-Chat one can see and analyze THE way HOW students are thinking by bringing in THEIR Critical-Thinking, that shows their learning instantly… AND, the students use as well the <===> Twitter Moments <===> to make THEIR reflection about their learning while collecting different tweets from different persons on the Twitter-Chat <===> #UOTM18 <===> and even creating blog posts about it to reflect their learning. The moments and the blogs are made outside the <===> #SchoolCocoon (school, university…) <===> and Pierre LEVY is using this practice since 3-4 years already.

[Gust MEES] I had also already created a blog post about “Reflection” in Twitter-Chats in June 2016: Update Twitter Chats: WHAT To DO BETTER!?

Start text from PJ CAPOSEY Making Education Meaningful

So, as I see it in we have two binary options – stay unfinished or be completely miserable. Let me explain, if we attempt to do the same things for kids in 2028 as we do today we will be woefully ineffective. Very rarely is someone who is ineffective at their job fulfilled by their job and happy in their professional life.

Okay, 2028 seems pretty far away. I challenge you to consider if it is really possible to make slight changes for eight years and then have a monumental shift in years nine and ten. Probably not. So, what’s the point?

The change in our world is constant. Our kids are different than they were ten years ago and will be vastly different ten years from now. Our communities are changing. Our world is fundamentally different and will continue to evolve. In education we must adjust to them and to our world (more importantly their world) or we are going to face becoming dangerously irrelevant.

So, as educators we have one choice. One option to stay relevant. One option to compete. One option to serve our kids with integrity. And perhaps most importantly, one option to be personally happy. That option is to stay unfinished. Embrace change. Love the grind. Have a deep, hard, introspective conversation with yourself that it is never going to be easier to be great at your job. And be okay with that realization.

And I hope – deep in my soul – that accepting the fact that it is never going to be easier energizes you. You were not put on this Earth to be average. None of us were. You have chosen to be a part of the best profession in the world. We have the opportunity to change lives every single day. It is an awesome responsibility, but an even more incredible opportunity.

By reading carefully the students, learners blog posts, tweets (Twitter posts), Twitter lists, Twitter Moments and Curation you will see HOW they can GET interested for their own learning by following ONLY a few rules to become digital citizens who know how to use the tools in a responsibility manner WITH understanding about WHAT they are talking and posting!!

Critical Thinking AND Proactive Thinking a MUST in Modern-EDU!

Critical Thinking AND Proactive Thinking a MUST in Modern-EDU!

.

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

Critical Thinking AND Proactive Thinking a MUST in Modern-EDU! WHY!?

Looks to me as WE will live THE same as in 50’s-60’s with “James DEAN“, Living on the edge Youth & Society“, overload of information!? Change? At that time period it was TV, NOW it’s the internet, similarities? Well, I think so!! A NEW media showed up, the internet, and with the internet ALSO Social-Media. MOST of people are just consumers and DON’T see the dangers NOR do THEY accept THEM!! It’s a Virtual-World which THEY can’t imagine about HOW it will have an impact on Real-World!! BOTH, the Virtual-World and the Real-World are influencing each other!

.

critical-thinking_ENG2

WE are facing actually (2017) “Fake News“, MOST coming and being sponsored by politics interests!!! Just follow “Donald TRUMP’s election campaign and his actually acting…” and YOU will understand WHAT is going on! I encourage YOU to go for “Deep-THINKing” about WHAT is happening in Virtual-World THAT will influence the Real-World!!!

Knowing THIS, you certainly agree with me that there is a MUST to learn about “Critical THINKing, but HOW!?? Please read my curation articles below:

Read also the article below, please:

.

Radical Pedagogy: Education has the power to change social inequality by nurturing a generation with an educated mistrust of everything that has been indoctrinated before. This educational stance is one that we must all strive for as the moral purpose of education.

.

And WHAT about Proactive-Thinking?

Teaching, the profession that creates all other professionsProactive-Thinking SHOULD be burned in into EVERY Educators, Teachers MIND! WHY!??? The MOST IMPORTANT for any education related persons should be THEIR students, learners and the how to to prepare THEM for THEIR future!!

THIS Proactive-Thinking results in getting informed about WHAT is the need from the workforce, industry etc. to make sure that the future workers, employees… will be able to help the country to stay competitive with well educated persons! Especially for NEW jobs who will be created because of ICT, where nearly no one knows WHAT those jobs could be!!

Therefore it is very important that Educators, Teachers focus THEIR Professional Development first on the skills that students, learners need to have!

Read my blog post, below please:

ICT RESPONSIBILITY

AND as WE are working with ICT, it is MANDATORY that WE will have knowledge about Cyber Security to protect at its BEST OUR students, learners and THAT WE forward OUR knowledge to THEM!

Please read my blog post below:

WHY is Proactive-Thinking IMPORTANT and a MUST in Modern-Education with and about ICT!?

.

Proactive-Thinking is ALSO a MUST in Makerspaces and MakerEd

To ensure the safety of OUR students, learners, WE MUST be informed about Safety-Rules when working with different tools and the possible dangers of those tools!!

THE CHANGE: Trend in EDUcation to Make EDUcators TEACHers MORE Professional

THE CHANGE: Trend in EDUcation to Make EDUcators TEACHers MORE Professional

Trend in EDUcation to Make EDUcators TEACHers MORE Professional

mediocrity-reward-nice-talkingSince I follow EDUcators, TEACHers on Social Media twitter (2009), I must admit that too many of them (a lot) are on a Mediocrity status, even on a BAD status, which is no more acceptable in 21st Century!! Using Social Media twitter and others (new technologies…) to forward OLD, outdated mentality!, with a NOT up-to-date Professional Development and a lack of modern Pedagogy!!

This post is NOT mentioned for bashing, BUT to go for Deep-Thinking about the profession of EDUcators, TEACHers and its evolution.

BUT they are showing up as being superior to all others; blocking other experienced education related persons which give them feedback for better ways, and building up a PLN (Personal [Professional] Learning Network) with the same interests and same mentality where everybody is endorsing each member with ONLY nice talking, feedback is NOT welcome.

THEY want to shine on the web, presenting themselves as a golden statue, whereby the core is wooden and the surface is ONLY gold plated! 😉 The trend is to create Twitter-Chats for Professional Development, which is GOOD anyway, BUT by continuing with a “Fixed Mindset” by using modern technology and Social Media is NOT professional at all!! OH YES, EDUcators, TEACHers are ALSO narcissistic persons, even probably more as youth and career driven. Being humble isn’t their force, arrogance is present on a daily basis…!

.

And as most of you know me, a related music 😉

.

.

The trend overall on the globe is to use ONLY EdTech and apps and the Modern Pedagogy isn’t used at all!! That’s the wrong way!!

.

.

.

.

With that “Fixed Mind” they stay on the “Status Quo”  as their outdated … is ONLY transferred by just using modern technology! In Modern-Education it’s about the learners, students; it’s about “Learning-To-Learn”!

Schools and EDUcation can’t follow anymore that quick as quick the Real-World is changing constantly and nobody knows actually WHAT will be NEW tomorrow!

LEARNing By Doing-A MUST in Modern EDUcation for BEST Results

Let us START with a Chinese proverb from Confucius <===> I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. Already more than 1500 years ago, this wise man was talking about “Learning By Doing“. Please check below:

.

Confucius-Learning By Doing-BrainyQuote

Click image please to access more quotes from Confucius.

.

More about Confucius:

Research shows that hands-on learning is an effective way to teach students science. A 2009 study found that eighth-grade students who were involved in hands-on science projects demonstrated a deeper understanding of concepts than students who were taught with traditional methods such as textbook readings, lectures, and tests (Riskowski et al., 2009).

WHAT could get included into the Curriculum WITH Learning-By-Doing

hammer

WHY NOT including #MakerED as a <===> #LEARNingByDoing <===> into the curriculum!? WHAT’S that meaning? Let the students, learners tinker a bit about the subject taught; please find here below some topics with examples and explications:

Well, lots of more ideas to find on YouTube, give it a try 😉 Check out, below, please some videos to GET inspiration:

.

.

Sustainability: EVERY kid (nearly) has a smartphone, right!? Smartphones can take ALSO photos (NOT ONLY selfies… use them on intelligent way), so WHY NOT using them to teach the kids about the nature?  To make them curious about WHAT is around them when they walk outside the house! Make it like an adventure, show them, guide them, show them ALSO WHERE to find plants, flowers by uploading an image on Google to find out WHAT it is; this is possible, click below please:

SHOW them How-To use Photo-Editors to enhance taken photos and to bring in text into the photos (this e.g. the name of the plants, photos, animals, insects…).

Maker-First steps in electronics-The moving, rotating and lighting Mini-Brush

The moving, rotating and lighting Mini-Brush

The moving, rotating and lighting Mini-Brush

In OUR previous electronics projects WE were tinkering around with vibration motors and flashing LEDs, well we will continue on the same schema to get a bit more soldering practice and to discover ALSO the use of heat shrink tube, accumulators and drinking straws. This is ALSO a soldering exercise with some fun, and knowledge acquirement as usually in my tutorials. WE will learn also about accumulators, rechargeable batteries. Using accumulators instead of batteries will save us a lot of money and it is ALSO providing LESS RECYCLING! 😉 WE do something GOOD for the nature <===> Sustainability!!

OHM’s Law, resistors and LEDs

.

led-symbols

.

As WE are using a 9 Volts accumulator (rechargeable battery) this time together with a LED, WE need to put a resistor in series to the LED to protect it.As

Learn more:

.

Practical Tip: LEDs are transparent, so the Cathode (Minus) looks always a bit larger as the Anode (Plus).

.

.

.

When working with electronics WE need to learn a bit theory and mathematics, BUT DON’T worry, it is very easy! First of all which is mandatory, is the “OHM’s Law“. YOU DON’T need to calculate! 😉 There is an online calculator who will do the job for YOU! Click the image below please to access the online calculator and play a bit around with it to get used to it, have fun.

..

ohms-law-calculator

Click the image please to access the online calculator

.

Let us make OUR calculation for the resistor: WE have a power supply of 9 Volts and the used LED has a maximum of 3 Volts while its current is 20 mA (milli Ampere). Thus meaning: 9 Volts – 3 Volts is 6 Volts which need to get dropped away from the LED to NOT destroy it! SO, on the resistor 6 Volts need to get derived away from the LED. Let us NOW convert the 6 Volts to milli Volts which gives us 6,000 mV. AND as R = U/I <===> 6,000 divided by 20 is 300! The resistor MUST have a value of 300 Ω, next standard value is 330 Ω!

WHEN YOU use the above online calculator YOU SHOULD give the values in VOLT and in Ampere; or WE have 20 mA which is 0,020 A. Check the online calculator below please:

Working with heat shrink tube

[START text from Wikipedia] Heat shrink tubing (or, commonly, heat shrink or heatshrink) is a shrinkable plastic tube used to insulate wires, providing abrasion resistance and environmental protection for stranded and solid wire conductors, connections, joints and terminals in electrical work. It can also be used to repair the insulation on wires or to bundle them together, to protect wires or small parts from minor abrasion, and to create cable entry seals, offering environmental sealing protection. Heat shrink tubing is ordinarily made of nylon or polyolefin, which shrinks radially (but not longitudinally) when heated, to between one-half and one-sixth of its diameter. Optimizing the design

I first started to make a normal cabling and the mess I saw didn’t make me feel proud and comfortable, there was something embarrassing! I looked around on my working bench and I discovered some drinking straws which I bought (can’t remember for what, bought them as I was feeling to do so…). I took one and was plying it and suddenly the idea was there to hide the cables inside and WHY NOT to incorporate a super bright LED: the idea was born 😉

The Mini BUG Robot

.

The Mini BUG Robot

In last blog post (tutorial) WE were practicing OUR soldering by creating “JOHNNY the ski-man“, a bit “Electronics-Art” using electronics components. In the video below, which I created with the FREEWARE <===> Windows Movie Maker <===> WE see ALSO “The Mini BUG Robot” who gives “JOHNNY” a ride. It is very easy to build that mini robot as there are ONLY six (6) components to solder.

.

.

The schematics

Let us first have a look on the schematics where WE will discover some NEW stuff, a mini motor; in this case it is an “vibration motor” which is used in smartphones. THEY exist as round, rectangular and in disk format, please check <===> Vibration Motor Images <===> in Google searches (images).

.

minibug-robot-schematics-screenshot

.

As you can see there is NOTHING special; we just put four (4) elements (2 LEDS, a vibration motor and a tantalum capacitor) in parallel. And we have a switch to switch on/off our circuit. As battery we use a “CR2032“.
