Design The Learning Of YOUR Learners, Students AND YOURS

A GOOD preparation made is already the half way done! SO… Making a design on the How-To learning will give benefits for the educators AND the learners (students)! Education has since ages being behind about the How-To of “Learning” (waiting for “Research papers who come 10 years or more later…) as it still is in the mind of THEM as “Teaching” on an old fashioned manner! THE “Mind Set SHIFT” to the 21st Century is STILL NOT made by most and certainly NOT from people who have decisive power as THEY are NOT up to date with THEIR “Professional Development” who is very far behind! Check the below links, please, to find out WHAT is NEW in Education:

Below YOU will see WHAT the world needs for abilities from students in the 21st Century: use it to design YOUR course(s), please.

Grove Beginner Kit for Arduino | SEEEDSTUDIO |

SEEEDSTUDIO asked me through LinkedIn to make a cooperation with them for reviewing a NEW Arduino, the “Grove Beginner Kit for Arduinoproduct which I accepted. Today I received the stuff which in the next days I will play around a bit and create Blog posts (Tutorials) about it, stay tuned…

FIRST impressions:

I ordered it on 28-07-2020 on the site of SEEDSTUDIO and it arrived on 03-08-2020 @02H58 PM, delivered by DHL. Actually very quick from China to Luxembourg!!

Unpacking my order:

Nice cardboard with lots of TIPS printed on it. The box is sealed with 3 circular glued plastic which I had cut through with scissors, BAD IDEA, as I damaged the cardboard while NOT knowing that the box was meant as a whole playstation as itself (see photos, please)… Here the company could improve please, thanks! My constructive critics! 😉

.

.

As long as that glued plastic problem ISN’T resolved, use a sharp cutter to cut off the glued circular plastic as I couldn’t remove it by hand!

.

Reading the online Manual

Well, NOTHING to say against it, it is well done!! Please check it here below:

There are professional STEP-BY-STEP instructions so you can’t make mistakes!!

.

Getting started

ALL you have to do is to connect the USB-Cable to the PC, Laptop, which is in the right sight of the box (see step 2 in the PIC below please) to start. [Start Text from WiKi] Grove Beginner Kit for Arduino is one of the best Arduino Beginner Kit for beginners. It includes one Arduino compatible Board and 10 additional Arduino sensors and all in one-piece of PCB design. All the modules have been connected to the Seeeduino through the PCB stamp holes so no Grove cables are needed to connect. Of course, you can also take the modules out and use Grove cables to connect the modules. You can build any Arduino project you like with this Grove Beginner Kit For Arduino. [End Text from WiKi]

.

.

Plug and Play Unboxing Demo

The Grove Beginner Kit has a plug and plays unboxing demo, where you first plug in the power to the board, you get the chance to experience all the sensors in one go! Use the button and rotary potentiometer to experience each sensor demo!

  • Scroll -> Rotating Rotary Potentiometer
  • Select -> Short Press Button
  • Exit Current Demo -> Long Press Button

Buzzer and LED module are used for key prompt.

My review

Well, I can recommend this product for beginners by 100%!! Up from the beginning beginners can find out HOW things work with just plugging the USB cable to the PC, Laptop, computer. It’s a GREAT way to bring Coding to STEAM students, Maker’s, MakerED and Maker Spaces!

I didn’t yet using the Breakout possibilities, I DON’T overwhelm you with TOO MUCH information, that will GET discussed in next tutorials, BUT looks promising as NO need to plug single cables, ALL done by ONLY one connector!!!

.

Please check the videos below to understand how the GROVE System works.

..

WHERE to order it?

You can GET it here actually (04-08-2020):

..

.

Mausi-idée

.

TIP for Educators, Teachers, Coaches:

Let the learners first trying the working examples in the box to discover the possibilities! Later you can make the Breakout and then they can reproduce the Coding examples such as mentioned in the online manual.

SO, you are a retired EDUcator, TEACHer, Instructor, LEHRENDER: WHAT to do NOW?!!

programmerman-animatedWell, that was the question I was asking myself when I became retired in 2014. As I did innovation in Modern-EDUcation in my country Luxembourg, there was NO WAY to give that up, BTW! SO, years before my retirement I was already present on Social-Media Twitter (2009), Facebook, and I did Curation (2011), as I was blogging (2010-2011) ALSO, actually very successful with > 197K (197.132) views (November 2019).

Giving up something which was already well known worldwide, was NO OPTION! Well, please check below HOW YOU can stay informed and trying to help others as well; remember: you are NOT anymore in the “School-Cocoon” and MORE FREE to say WHAT YOU want!! YOU DON’T have to go to “stupid” meetings anymore which are time-killing and mostly useless!!!

Check ALSO please:

A BIG difference, use it, please to make a CHANGE!! Others will listen and maybe follow your advice for a BETTER EDUcation, a Modern-EDUcation! Advice: Please check below to follow and to stay Up-To-Date!

AND, why not starting with tinkering and coding, being part of the Maker-Community and trying it out to be able to share it with your community in the MakerED, Maker-Spaces? You have time NOW, use it, please for the benefit of the LEARNERS! Check below please:

.

NEW Words, Trends to Know and to LEARN about in 21st Century

programmerman2Are YOU feeling overwhelmed with strange words, NEW trends, when you are reading and following posts, tweets, articles about/and in Social Media!? Well, I can understand YOU!!! There are SO MUCH, if I wouldn’t do curation, I wouldn’t understand it anymore as well, to be honest! 😉 Through my daily curation I see it and I read those articles, from WHERE I learn a lot as an autodidact. WHEN there are some words which I DON’T understand I am going MOSTLY to Wikipedia to find its explication and if NOT sufficient, I use GOOGLE and other online resources to know MORE about it!

For ME it’s THE BEST way (Curation) to learn and to stay up-to-date with my Professional Development! I tried out a lot of different ways after being online since 1998 and believe me, please, it’s the fastes way to keep it UP! 😉 Through Curation I build up my <===> PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management from where I can use it in ANY of my blogs, twitter posts and other Social Media to share it to people willing to learn.

Let us FIRST have a look about WHAT Curation and PKM is (first stuff to read and bring into PracTICE) before WE continue with THE strange words and trends later:

SO, let’s have a look on some (actually a lot…) NEW words and trends in EDUcation and WHO will influence EDUcation below, as THEY are actually running in Real-World, let us START first with the words:

Check also, please:

P.S.: The present words with NOT YET a link will get updated later, otherwise I wouldn’t finish this blog post! 😉

Dynamic Learning

Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With digital tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamicThis concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.

Through Curation, Social Media twitter and by building a PLN this is perfectly possible!

BTW : Did YOU actually realize that NOW it’s the PracTICE WHICH is dominating the Real-World before it EVEN is taught by EDUcation, a BIG CHANGE, isn’t it!!! Because of Entrepreneurship (bold actions…) the internet helped to CHANGE the world and flipped EDUcation to bring it MORE close to the needs of the workforce/Industry!!!

The NEW Pedagogy is MORE about the learners, students and to put THEM into the drivers seat; looking to find a Win-Win situation about THE How-To to GET THEM learning together in a team (EVEN outside the School-Cocoon with Social Media…) and to prepare THEM for the workforce/labor/industry by being able for <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> for a Life-Long Learning once out of school!

ESP8266 WiFi Weather Station with Color TFT Display

We were playing around already with LED MATRIX’s, devices to visualize measured values and/or texts. In this blog post (Tutorial) we will use a TFT Display (Thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display) with touch screen to display a three (3) days weather forecast with moon phases. This little weather station acquires its data over a Wi-Fi connection from an online weather server, Wunderground.

We will use devices from ADAFRUIT; they have developed a special product series for easy mounting, the FEATHER series. We need the TFT FeatherWing – 2.4″ 320×240 Touchscreen and the ADAFRUIT Feather HUZZAH which has included an ESP8266. We used the ESP8266 already in our previous blog post <===> First Steps with the ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Scrolling Text (Time, Temp., Humidity…) with 8×8 LED MATRIX  <===> so we are already familiar with its use!

What is GREAT with this project, there ISN’T any wiring, no cables to connect; apart from plugging in the accumulator! 😉 BUT, please check the video below who explains in detail:

.

.

Detailed parts list, supplier and prices

Please find below the detailed parts list as well as the supplier and the prices.

Item and quantity

Supplier and order number

Price

ADAFRUIT Feather HUZZAH ADAFRUIT: ID 3046 18.95$
ADAFRUIT TFT FeatherWing – 2.4″ 320×240 Touchscreen  ADAFRUIT: ID 3315 29.95$
 Lithium Ion Battery – 3.7v 2000mAh ADAFRUIT: ID 2011 12.50$

  Total: 62.40 $

..

I suggest to you to read the full article from ADAFRUIT here <===> https://learn.adafruit.com/wifi-weather-station-with-tft-display/overview?embeds=allow  <===> who explains in detail ALL the necessary steps!!

For the case of the weather station ADAFRUIT provides the 3D Design files, so you can 3D print it:

As you can see the price is reasonable for this project, ONLY 62.40$ and easy to realize! ALL what YOU need is a bit time, passion and here we GO! 😉 Have FUN!

Online ordering links:

Preparation: Libraries, code and API Key

There is some preparation needed before we can test our code for the weather station: I suggest that you read and that you follow each step as shown in this tutorial by ADAFRUIT (very important, otherwise it won’t work!!):

It isn’t difficult, but it needs some time and you must be careful to follow each step!

We need ALSO an account on the weather server Wunderground to create our “API” (Application Programming Interface) which we need to implement in our code settings! THIS is also well explained here:

Same procedure as explained already above, follow very carefully each action step by step!

.

Are there some pit falls?

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01YES, this could be!

.

The code is running, how it shows up in reality

Well, you haven’t encounter any problem or the problems are solved, this is WHAT you will see appearing on the TFT:

1
Updating Time
2Updating Conditions
3Updating Forecasts 4Updating Astronomy
5Done...  6Wrong settings code

.

As you can see in “Picture 6“, that is what shows up on the first start! Is it the right time which is displayed? Is it the right measure unit which is displayed (°C OR °F)? If SO, it is OK then, if NOT, then we have to look on the code and change some settings!!

Here below the How-To:

Open the Arduino IDE and click on the “Settings.h” tab, check below where and how to change (adapt) the settings to your country and time zone.

.

Click the image, please, to enlarge

Once done, save the code and upload it again. You will GET the right data displayed then as shown below:

MAX7219 LED MATRIX 4 in One

Click image, please, to access the article on Amazon

.

.

.

As we were playing around already with LED’s in previous blog posts let us NOW try out a LED Matrix “4 in one”; its four (4) singular displays soldered on one piece of a single printed circuit board (PCB). I ordered the stuff at Amazon (DE) https://www.amazon.de/AZDelivery-MAX7219-Matrix-Anzeigemodul-Arduino/dp/B079HVW652 which is supplied by AZ-Delivery.

.

.

.

.

.

I like their products as they provide ALSO  eBooks in PDF format for their products with quality explications (in German) as also tips; the eBooks can be downloaded here (registration first required):

The Matrix costs also only 12,99€ and therefore worth a try… BTW: I am very satisfied with the product and I ordered two more to make the display longer for my home project. SO, let us start with the wiring scheme, please check below:

.

MAX7219 LED MATRIX 4 in One-Wiring Scheme

Click the image, please, to enlarge.

.

As you can see in above wiring scheme, there are ONLY 5 wires necessary and we use an Arduino NANO (works also with the UNO). Connect those wires as shown above, connect the USB cable to the Arduino NANO and the computer. Now we are ready to load the code, but first we need to install the necessary libraries for the MAX7219-Display. Check below please for the How-To:

.

Upload-Libraries-MAX7219-Display-1

.

Open the Arduino IDE, click on “Sketch“, followed by “Include Library” as shown in above image.

.

Upload-Libraries-MAX7219-Display-2

.

Click on “Manage Libraries…“, a new window will open, the “Library Manager“, as shown below.

.

Upload-Libraries-MAX7219-Display-Library Manager

.

In the Search-field enter„MAX72xx“ and chose MD_MAX72xx from majicDesigns and install it. SO, the libraries (the code for specific Hardware…) are installed, let us GO for uploading the “Sketch” (the code)… We will use a ready example to make us life easy, please follow the instructions in below picture:

.

Upload-Libraries-MAX7219-Display-Sketch-Examples

.

SO, this done close the Arduino IDE and open it again to chose now: GO to “File“, click on “Examples” followed by “MD_Parola” and chose on of the ready examples, WE will use as example “Parola_Scrolling” as it is expressive for results…

.

A new Arduino IDE with the chosen Sketch will open…

.

MAX7219-Display-Sketch-Code in Arduino IDE

.

In the above image you see WHERE you can have a look for changing the variables, your own text and scrolling-pause. When you use “Notepad++” to open the code (it is more easy to detect the lines to change…) you will find them in lines 66-74

THE values which you see in the above image (screen shot) are mine which I changed already, to me “Scroll-Speed = 150” is the optimum value; but chose your own…

NOW, as we finished everything, let us upload the code to the Arduino UNO, or Arduino NANO.

Have FUN with your “LEARNing-By-Doing project” and try out ALSO the other examples 😉

NEW Words, Trends to Know and to LEARN about in 21st Century

programmerman-animatedAre YOU feeling overwhelmed with strange words, NEW trends, when you are reading and following posts, tweets, articles about/and in Social Media!?

STILL following “WE have ALWAYS done it this way” OR ALREADY on Growth-Mindset!?

STILL following “WE have ALWAYS done it this way” OR ALREADY on Growth-Mindset!?

.

Most dangerous phrase...

.

STILL following “WE have ALWAYS done it this way” OR ALREADY on Growth-Mindset!?

Following the masses...Well, when analyzing posts from EDUcators, TEACHers from around the world on Social-Media twitter since 2009 already, I must admit (excuse-me please…) that MOST of THEM are still on a Fixed-Mindset! Very rare are those who have already adapted their mind to 21st Century Modern-EDUcation, just following the (m)asses in twitter-chats which are rigorously following one solely task <===> getting EDU-Stars <===> and using the tweets (advice, practice…) to publish books about it!!

Most of EDUcators, TEACHers are STILL on a <===> Fixed Mindset <===> acting with outdated pedagogical behavior and NOT willing to change it! THEY praise how good they are with an incredible arrogance (mostly from Germany and the US) and even are blocking OTHER educative persons as they don’t fit in their outdated scheme!!

Feedback is NOT welcome to those persons as they don’t have yet understood WHAT Social-Media is; they still think that they are in THEIR classroom AND in THEIR country and can do WHAT THEY want!! Well, that isn’t for sure the case. On Social-Media, especially on twitter, other EDUcators, TEACHers from around the globe can interact and give their feedback (if they are courageous enough…)! One posted tweet goes around the world and isn’t anymore national!! On the internet there are NO borders!!!

Learn more:

mediocrity-reward-nice-talking.

Giving feedback the wrong way by Fixed-Mindset (with outdated pedagogical background…) is ALSO the wrong way!! WHEN one talks (post on Social-Media) one is MOSTLY interacted with adults and NOT pupils! Thus meaning: there SHOULD NOT Pedagogy to get used BUT <===> Andragogy!!! A lack of knowledge (Professional Development is a century behind…) by using ICT and Social-Media by posting that half-baked stuff is harming any professionals of EDUcation!

.

Learn more:

ELVIS IMPERSONATORSTHOSE EDUcators, TEACHers on Social-Media WHO are leading some Twitter-Chats are doing a WRONG LEADERSHIP in the sole purpose of becoming infamous <===> EDUStars <===> and DON’T take care about the right leading way!! WHEN after four (4) OR five (5) years of running a twitter-chat one is still on the same path and didn’t come much further, one should ask WHY!!

Learn more:

MOST EDUcators, TEACHers are focused on TEACHING and NOT on LEARNING; that’s already a Fixed-Mindset as in Modern-EDUcation WE are already since long on the way how students, learners can go for BETTER learning and especially on <===> LEARNing-To-LEARN <===> for <===> Life-Long LEARNing!!

Social-Media shows very well, by analyzing, WHAT’S going on in Virtual-World and ALSO shows WHERE EDUcators, TEACHers have to work hard on to become BETTER!! Using modern tools ALONE ISN’T Modern-EDUcation; it’s the Mindshift from Fixed-Mindset to Growth-Mindset first by using ALSO Modern Pedagogy!!

Learn more:

Simple BUT WRONG.

Actually (July 2017), the Growth-Mindset ISN’T YET used by MOSTLY EDUcators, TEACHers as THEY DIDN’T have read the last research books from <===> Carol DWECK <===> NOR that THEY follow any other research!! THEY choose the easy way, instead of being informed to give THE BEST EDUcation to OUR students, learners!

Text below from EDUTOPIA:

5 Growth Mindset Practices

In their groundbreaking book, Professional Learning Communities at Work, Richard DuFour and Robert Eaker say it clearly when pointing out the issue that comes about when change initiatives are considered “a task to complete rather than an ongoing process.” If we really want to improve our schools, our work, and the education of our students, we can do so by adopting a new mindset — for everyone — that would include:

  1. Being humble enough to accept that there are things about ourselves and our practices that can improve
  2. Becoming part of professional teams that value constructive critique instead of criticism
  3. Treating setbacks as formative struggles within the learning process instead of summative failures
  4. Realizing the restrictive role that timelines can play in reaching high standards, and using foundational philosophies such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to map systems so that everyone’s growth is supported
  5. Create flexible grouping at all times so that nobody’s trapped in any one course level or particular type of work.

Technology integration as a process

As mentioned earlier, technology integration is a process that is incorporated in lesson planning. It is not about picking up an app and forcing it into teaching to make it more attractive. With pedagogy steering the process, the first step is to identify the learning objectives. Typically, the teacher will then decide on the methods and assessment tools to achieve learning objectives in a student-centered learning environment.

WRONG USE OF TOOLSEDUcators, TEACHers STILL think as being pressed into a special scheme, the <===> #SchoolCocoon scheme <===> instead of thinking as <===> NO BOX <===>, nor is EDUcation in collaboration with the working-force and industry!! THAT collaboration, especially, is a MUST in the 21st Century, please check below:

It’s a fact: digital skills are now needed for most jobs. And industry is best placed to assess market needs and work-based skills gaps. The solution? Offering more training in Information and Communication Technologies, and bridging the gap between research and industry.

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren:

There is an interesting  twitter chat to follow, WHO goes a bit deeper in Modern-EDUcation <===> #EdChatMENA!

VERY rare are <===> Professional EDUcators, TEACHers <===> WHO are present on Social-Media twitter!! THEY are STILL a minority, in the hope that THIS will change in the next years and THAT THEY will NOT get blocked by counterfeit LEADERship from OTHERS!!! There is a need for more courage from professionals to fight this!

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren:

Lots of EDUcators, TEACHers show up on Social-Media with “Authority” (the control freaks…), and have NO idea about <===> Creativity <===>, NOR <===> Critical-THINKing <===> BUT showing up as THE EXPERTS on Modern-EDUcation!! I recommend THEM to read the articles below:

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren:

Concerning <===> Creativity <===>: WHAT’S about to put it in ALSO in blogs!? WHY EDUcators, TEACHers post nearly ONLY text!??? WHY don’t they put in blogs videos, podcasts, photos, images (Multimedia)!!? WHY don’t THEY use FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions) in blogs!?? About time to get adapted to Modern EDUcation, isn’t it 😉

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren:

.

SO, WHAT’S THE Change for EDUcators, TEACHers in Modern-EDUcation? Please read my blog posts below:

.

I recommend to read the following books to understand WHAT Modern-EDUcation with modern Pedagogy is to improve the presence on Social-Media and especially to BETTER serve OUR students, learners!

.

MUST READ BOOKS-2

.

It is about time to read these books and to understand the content about it!!

WHY!??? I will give YOU a comparison: Actually on Social-Media this looks like if EDUcators, TEACHers would use Social-Media as if THEY were living in the 20th Century and using THEIR first phone!! GOT IT!??? 😉

Find out also WHAT other countries are doing

To find out WHAT other countries are doing already who started as pioneers is probably the BEST way to get some ideas; let us have a look on Luxembourg where the Government created <===> Digital Luxembourg AND Digital4EDUcation.

.Digital 4 EDUcation-Luxembourg-2015-2

.

The pace of technological change is faster than ever, creating entirely new types of jobs and industries. Novel skills are required for new technologies to be used and shared. The workforce of today and tomorrow needs to be digitally savvy and enterprising. This is why the Government, together with a number of private players, work jointly on preparing current and future generations for the digital age. The Luxembourg Tech School is a project, which has been launched to train future digital leaders. Kick-starting innovative projects that benefit the country, Digital Lëtzebuerg – together with the Ministry of Education and the SCRIPT, supported the Luxembourg Tech School from day one. Discover for yourself what the 32 students of the first intake have been up to!

.

Let us have ALSO a look on WHAT Finland is doing:

Instead of control, competition, stress, standardized testing, screen-based schools and loosened teacher qualifications, try warmth, collaboration, and highly professionalized, teacher-led encouragement and assessment.

At the University of Eastern Finland’s Normaalikoulu teacher training school in Joensuu, Finland, you can see Hietava’s students enjoying the cutting-edge concept of “personalized learning.”

.

As a reminder:

NEVER forget about <===> ETHICS <===>, stay humble and act as <===> Professional EDUcators, TEACHers <===> THE ones WHO are ready to give THEIR students, LEARNers BEST EDUcation!! Be role models on Social Media!!

LEARNing By Doing-A MUST in Modern EDUcation for BEST Results

Let us START with a Chinese proverb from Confucius <===> I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. Already more than 1500 years ago, this wise man was talking about “Learning By Doing“. Please check below:

Sustainability: EVERY kid (nearly) has a smartphone, right!? Smartphones can take ALSO photos (NOT ONLY selfies… use them on intelligent way), so WHY NOT using them to teach the kids about the nature?  To make them curious about WHAT is around them when they walk outside the house! Make it like an adventure, show them, guide them, show them ALSO WHERE to find plants, flowers by uploading an image on Google to find out WHAT it is; this is possible, click below please:

SHOW them How-To use Photo-Editors to enhance taken photos and to bring in text into the photos (this e.g. the name of the plants, photos, animals, insects…).
