Social Distancing Monitor, Arduino NANO and I2C OLED Display
In times of the Coronavirus-Crisis (Covid_19), it might be GOOD to respect the 2 meters distance to avoid getting infected!!! But not everybody can estimate distances, nor are ALL persons respecting the 2 meters rule!!! So came the idea to build an easy to realize gadget, which measures the distance when the 2 meters are not respected.
First of all, like usual, I was searching the internet to find out if there isn’t already such a project around. And YES, there is one; I found a tutorial with an Arduino UNO with provided code as well. Please check below:
In a previous tutorial WE were already using a “Social Distancing Monitor with Alarm, Arduino NANO and I2C LCD1602 Display“, check below please for revision:

Through the Maker-Movement and IoT (Internet of Things) there is already a LOT happening and different Networks are collecting Data through Sensorsand make them available for everybody to have access and study them! Such sensors are e.g.:
Air Quality
Meteo
Street traffic
Radiation
People (counter) traffic
Water Quality
Wind velocity
Radar for excess of car speed
Inundation prevention
Observations on:
Nature (birds, etc.)
Archaeology discovering
…
Those, above mentioned applications can even be assembled together and so being a precious source for communes and Governments! Mostly such projects are done with an ARDUINO and/or Raspberry PI based micro controller and a mini computer: The main difference between them is Arduino is microcontroller board while Raspberry PI is a mini computer.
Thus meaning: that fits perfect for the Maker-Movement and could GET integrated easily into STEM projects!
Well, after following for a long time different possibilities on the How-To to get globally access to such IMPORTANT Big-Data for everyone, I found out THAT “The Things Network” is a perfect way! Please find below the address and the projects:

I hear you screaming already: I would like to be innovative, I even have some ideas BUT I am fearing about WHAT OTHERS would say and think about!! To be honest, NEVER look about WHAT OTHERS would say, innovation is something NEW and the new will GET up from the beginning NO acceptance, apart from a few which Professional-Development is Up-To-Date, and you probably (mostly) will GET even very hard criticism because people tend for “Listening to reply and NOT for understanding”!!
With ICT in EDUcation and while being (nearly) Up-To-Date with your Professional-Development while you have read the most important books about Modern-EDUcation from renowned researchers and by being online and using Social Media, especially Twitter, you certainly “feel” what MUST change to give OUR students, learners, BEST EDUcation. DO SO, I am pushing you if necessary, the world needs people with courage, motivation, engagement to bring Modern-EDUcation farther!!
And I am NOT talking about tools, Apps, THEY are ONLY facilitators; THE main so-called tool is YOU!!! YOU are modeling the statues (your learners, students) from a raw piece to a Master-Piece because of YOUR talents, knowledge, experience, Up-To-Date Professional-Development. It’s YOUR talent, like in arts, YOUR creativity who sparkles over to the learners, students with YOUR motivation, engagement, passion…
IF NO effort is brought in, NO results will come out!!
NOW, you know the secret ingredients (it’s like cooking…) and then comes the way of the How-To, there WE need to use ALSO Social Media, especially Twitter to connect with the students, learners!!Did I say connecting with students, learners on Twitter and learning together with the whole world; an OPEN place, NOT a closed classroom!!??? Sounds strange, isn’t it!??? Well, it isn’t strange at all, as it is PracTICE for the students, learners, to GET straight in to WHAT they will get used once in the workforce. It’s actually the BEST PracTICE they can get.
As on January 2018 I just have seen ONE Twitter-Chat (if you know another one, let me know please…) WHERE students, learners (average age 20 years old) were involved and it comes from Canada, the University of Ottawa, run by Pierre LEVY. Please check below some screenshots from the transcript of the Twitter-Chat:
.

.
By following that Twitter-Chat one can see and analyze THE way HOW students are thinking by bringing in THEIR Critical-Thinking, that shows their learning instantly… AND, the students use as well the <===> Twitter Moments <===> to make THEIR reflection about their learning while collecting different tweets from different persons on the Twitter-Chat <===> #UOTM18 <===> and even creating blog posts about it to reflect their learning. The moments and the blogs are made outside the <===> #SchoolCocoon (school, university…) <===> and Pierre LEVY is using this practice since 3-4 years already.
So, as I see it in we have two binary options – stay unfinished or be completely miserable. Let me explain, if we attempt to do the same things for kids in 2028 as we do today we will be woefully ineffective. Very rarely is someone who is ineffective at their job fulfilled by their job and happy in their professional life.
Okay, 2028 seems pretty far away. I challenge you to consider if it is really possible to make slight changes for eight years and then have a monumental shift in years nine and ten. Probably not. So, what’s the point?
The change in our world is constant. Our kids are different than they were ten years ago and will be vastly different ten years from now. Our communities are changing. Our world is fundamentally different and will continue to evolve. In education we must adjust to them and to our world (more importantly their world) or we are going to face becoming dangerously irrelevant.
So, as educators we have one choice. One option to stay relevant. One option to compete. One option to serve our kids with integrity. And perhaps most importantly, one option to be personally happy. That option is to stay unfinished. Embrace change. Love the grind. Have a deep, hard, introspective conversation with yourself that it is never going to be easier to be great at your job. And be okay with that realization.
And I hope – deep in my soul – that accepting the fact that it is never going to be easier energizes you. You were not put on this Earth to be average. None of us were. You have chosen to be a part of the best profession in the world. We have the opportunity to change lives every single day. It is an awesome responsibility, but an even more incredible opportunity.
As the semester comes to an end, I'd like to share with all of you my experiences in @plevy's Knowledge Management class. It's been a pleasure learning with all of you at #UOKM. https://t.co/AHiv5Jifpp
By reading carefully the students, learners blog posts, tweets (Twitter posts), Twitter lists, Twitter Moments and Curation you will see HOW they can GET interested for their own learning by following ONLY a few rules to become digital citizens who know how to use the tools in a responsibility manner WITH understanding about WHAT they are talking and posting!!
THAT is what I call <===> Modern-EDUcation, Modern-LEARNing PracTICE!! Wishing to see OTHER EDUcators, #TEACHers to copy this 😉

In one of my previous blog posts I used Arduino-UNO Starter Kit, which I ordered at Conrad (English version)and I wasn’t really impressed by the manual, it didn’t satisfy to my expectations and needs. SO, I was looking around to find some distributors for a BETTER version… At “Amazon US” I found Elegoo UNO Project Super Starter Kit with Tutorial for Arduino. First of all, the kit is delivered in a plastic box and its price is also attractive, $34.99.
The manual with the code, libraries and tutorials is on a DVD. So, I was looking first on the DVD and reading the Manual in PDF format to see the quality of the tutorials and the tutorials in PDF are very well documented. Once knowing WHAT is possible to do I made my choice for the “LCD-Tutorial“…
Below is the “Wiring diagram“, the How-To to connect the wires to make it work.
.
.
As yo can see, it isn’t that much to do. Once the wiring ready, it is time to upload the code to the IDE and make it run to the success 😉 With the delivered code you will see the message “Hello World” on the LCD-Display.
.
.
Here below the code where the message “Hello World” is in.
.
SO, why not playing around a bit to understand the code and changing the text message in <===> lcd.print(“Hello, World!”); <===> into something different, something more personal!? That’s WHAT I did, here my code change:
lcd.begin(16, 2);
// Print a message to the LCD.
lcd.print(“Gust MEES – LCD”);
which shows up as, see image below please.
.
.
The LCD-Display shows now my name as well (photo was taken when the counter was at 62) as my age, yes I am 62 years old (actually young, LOL); meaning that WHEN I can do this you for sure are able to do it! SO, WHAT are you waiting for to START learning about coding!!?
Reflecting for ideas:
SO, WHY not assembling everything into a box and use it as your personal “Door Name Display“, play around with some text and find out…
Ready, START, GO… Have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing 😉

WHAT gifts to buy for the kids for Xmas and Holidays?
Every year the same question, isn’t it!? WHY not thinking about to buy gifts from where and with that the kids will learn? It might be good to have a look on WHAT are the skills required for the future from youth, students, learners and upon that making your choice! Actually (2017) the trends are in the maker scene and coding scene! Engineers, coding people and ICT specialists are needed, the workforce, industry is searching!!
What is the maker scene?
I invite you to read my bog post about it below, please:
In the Makerspaces as well as in Maker-EDUcation the creativity and PracTICE are getting fostered to be prepared for what the workforce and the industry are needing! The kids, students, learners are Learning-By-Doing and that is with fun involved also! They are not only tinkering around but they get coached in a “NO Hierarchy” space; in Luxembourg. SO, they can communicate with each other to solve problems and as well later also doing the same through the Social-Media and forums. They learn also by that way to build teams and are able for team-work later once out of school.
.
Team-Work is one of the essential skills which students, learners need to have for the future! Read also my blog post below, please, which explains WHAT the skills for the future are:
In the above blog posts you will find information what is happening and you can contact the responsible persons for more information; let your kids go there and have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing! 😉
What is the coding scene?
Coding is the 21st Century skill. Coding enhances creativity, teaches young people to cooperate, to work together across physical and geographical boundaries and to communicate in a universal language. Technology is part of our life, and coding brings it closer to you!

Social Media Twitter: WHAT Is Its Attraction And WHY Is IT Important For EDUcation!?
First of all, one can’t ignore existing trends which are already existing in Virtual World since ages and one SHOULD adapt for it in Real World, especially in Modern EDUcation! Social Media plays already a BIG role in business, so students, learners need to get taught about twitter and its importance for THEIR future jobs!
WHY teaching something where one has ONLY 140 characters to express themselves!? When I first heard about twitter that’s THE question I was posing myself as well!! But after one year observing and analyzing tweets I changed my mind and I became very active on twitter!!! Make the question DIFFERENT: Just think different, WHAT is the positive side about how to be able to express something with a very short (140 characters) characters!? WHAT is ALSO the value to use Social Media!?
Make an experiment first: try to express yourselves about a topic in a normal writing way; analyze that and try NOW to express THE same in 140 characters! YOUR grey cells are working a lot, isn’t it!? AND THAT is GOOD, YOU will find another way to express YOURSELVES in shorter wordsand sentences; YOU will be able to synthesize!!
.
.
Less talk, talk, talk and more RELEVANT information will be THE result!!! Sounds like QUALITY, isn’t it 😉
On the beginning, YOU will struggle a bit which is quite normal (I did ALSO…), but later YOU will find (after some training…) it interesting and even like it as a challenge… And BTW, if YOU can’t express it with ONLY one tweet (post on twitter), there is another possibility; check my blog post, please <===> Updated Twitter Knowledge
AND twitter is part of Social Media as well, like it says it already it’s social; YOU will meet OTHER people online with same interests (mostly, if well chosen followers…), different point of views (will give YOU some new ideas…) and YOU could build up a “Personal [Professional] Learning Network“, called a “PLN“. Through THIS PLN will find NEW opportunities for LEARNing as anyone learns from anybody, it’s an exchange of knowledge.
.And for YOUR entertainment, some music videos, related to this blog post 😉

Trend in EDUcation to Make EDUcators TEACHers MORE Professional
Since I follow EDUcators, TEACHers on Social Media twitter (2009), I must admit that too many of them (a lot) are on a Mediocrity status, even on a BAD status, which is no more acceptable in 21st Century!! Using Social Media twitter and others (new technologies…) to forward OLD, outdated mentality!, with a NOT up-to-date Professional Development and a lack of modern Pedagogy!!
This post is NOT mentioned for bashing, BUT to go for Deep-Thinking about the profession of EDUcators, TEACHers and its evolution.
BUT they are showing up as being superior to all others; blocking other experienced education related persons which give them feedback for better ways, and building up a PLN (Personal [Professional] Learning Network) with the same interests and same mentality where everybody is endorsing each member with ONLY nice talking, feedback is NOT welcome.
THEY want to shine on the web, presenting themselves as a golden statue, whereby the core is wooden and the surface is ONLY gold plated! 😉 The trend is to create Twitter-Chats for Professional Development, which is GOOD anyway, BUT by continuing with a “Fixed Mindset” by using modern technology and Social Media is NOT professional at all!!OH YES, EDUcators, TEACHers are ALSO narcissistic persons, even probably more as youth and career driven. Being humble isn’t their force, arrogance is present on a daily basis…!
.
And as most of you know me, a related music 😉
.
.
The trend overall on the globe is to use ONLY EdTech and apps and the Modern Pedagogy isn’t used at all!! That’s the wrong way!!
.
.
.
.
With that “Fixed Mind” they stay on the “Status Quo” as their outdated … is ONLY transferred by just using modern technology! In Modern-Education it’s about the learners, students; it’s about “Learning-To-Learn”!
Schools and EDUcation can’t follow anymore that quick as quick the Real-World is changing constantly and nobody knows actually WHAT will be NEW tomorrow!
.
.
.
There is a SHIFT needed, and THAT shift needs to be done in the mind, check below, please.
By analyzing the behavior of EDUcators, TEACHers on Social Media, especially on twitter, one must admit that a more professional attitude is to get learned; check below please, to find some pists.

NEW Words, Trends to Know and to LEARN about in 21st Century
Are YOU feeling overwhelmed with strange words, NEW trends, when you are reading and following posts, tweets, articles about/and in Social Media!? Well, I can understand YOU!!! There are SO MUCH, if I wouldn’t do curation, I wouldn’t understand it anymore as well, to be honest! 😉 Through my daily curation I see it and I read those articles, from WHERE I learn a lot as an autodidact. WHEN there are some words which I DON’T understand I am going MOSTLY to Wikipedia to find its explication and if NOT sufficient, I use GOOGLE and other online resources to know MORE about it!
For ME it’s THE BEST way (Curation) to learn and to stay up-to-date with my Professional Development! I tried out a lot of different ways after being online since 1998 and believe me, please, it’s the fastes way to keep it UP! 😉 Through Curation I build up my <===> PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management from where I can use it in ANY of my blogs, twitter posts and other Social Media to share it to people willing to learn.
Let us FIRST have a look about WHAT Curation and PKM is (first stuff to read and bring into PracTICE) before WE continue with THE strange words and trends later:
SO, let’s have a look on some (actually a lot…) NEW words and trends in EDUcation and WHO will influence EDUcation below, as THEY are actually running in Real-World, let us START first with the words:
P.S.: The present words with NOT YET a link will get updated later, otherwise I wouldn’t finish this blog post! 😉
Dynamic Learning
Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With digital tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamic. This concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.
Through Curation, Social Media twitter and by building a PLN this is perfectly possible!
BTW : Did YOU actually realize that NOW it’s the PracTICE WHICH is dominating the Real-World before it EVEN is taught by EDUcation, a BIG CHANGE, isn’t it!!! Because of Entrepreneurship (bold actions…) the internet helped to CHANGE the world and flipped EDUcation to bring it MORE close to the needs of the workforce/Industry!!!
The NEW Pedagogy is MORE about the learners, students and to put THEM into the drivers seat; looking to find a Win-Win situation about THE How-To to GET THEM learning together in a team (EVEN outside the School-Cocoon with Social Media…) and to prepare THEM for the workforce/labor/industry by being able for <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> for a Life-Long Learning once out of school!

Welcome to the official game of the 2017 FIRST Global Challenge, H2O FLOW! In H2O FLOW, teams learn about real-world water scarcity and contamination issues. In the game, two villages exist on either side of a contaminated river. The villagers compete to create and store purified water in their respective reserves. In a laboratory up stream, the villagers come together to research the contaminants and ultimately create a purification system so contaminants are removed before they reach the villages, thus providing clean water for all. In the end, each village prepares for the coming flood by searching for higher ground.
Match is 2:30 minutes long and six (6) teams are competing where one team (3 countries) is called “Aqua Team” and the other one (3 countries) is called “Hydro Team“.
.
Best is to watch the video below, who explains in detail:
Team Luxembourg finished 61 out of 163 teams (157 nations)!
[Ronny OSWEILER]After plenty hours of hard work, Team Luxembourg has been awarded the “Certificate of Excellence” that recognizes professional achievement, advanced education, commitment to STEM, time management and superior performance during the competition.
Congratulations to all students!
Team Luxembourg could have been 48th, if in game 5, we would have done the climbing, but due to technical reasons the robot was stuck. Those 20 points would have been important.
[Gust MEES] We will discuss this in the section “Incident in round five for Team Luxembourg“, below!

Incident in round five for Team Luxembourg
[Ronny OSWEILER] In round five, the robot of Team Canada touched our robot and disconnected our battery cable. We were unable to move for the rest of the match and lost a lot of potential points in that way. As one can see in the video, we had collected a lot of blue balls which could have been scored. Also it was impossible to climb the bar at the end of the match. .
[Gust MEES] How did Team Canada react after WHAT happend!??
[Ronny OSWEILER] They apologized for what happened. It was not their intention, as they were allied to us during that match.
Video from LAM-Code Club where one can see exactly WHAT happend, check below please (at approximately 1 min 11):
.
.
.
The preparation before the tournament
[Gust MEES]1) How did it start; did YOU get an invitation to participate?
[Ronny OSWEILER]The teachers at the LAM got offered the project of forming a team to represent Luxembourg by SCRIPT. We only got to know about the project very late, so time was of the essence. We had to gather a group of students within two days. As Annabel is currently studying science of education and is also interested in technology, I asked her to join me in mentoring the team.
[Gust MEES]2) WHEN did YOU start the preparations?
[Annabel SCHOELLEN] The preparations started at the end of march, when we had to gather all necessary information about the students, as well as ensure everyone has got a passport to travel to the United States. Then we had to wait for the robot, which arrived after the Easter holidays. From that moment onward, we started brainstorming on the robot to build, and prototype our ideas.
[Gust MEES]3) WHO were the responsible persons for the “Team Luxembourg”?
[Ronny OSWEILER] The main people that mentored the students while building the robot were Ronny Osweiler (teacher at LAM) , Micael Leal (teacher at LAM) and Annabel Schoellen (student in Science of Education). But the project could only be realized with the organizational help of Christian Boudot and Fabrice Roth, both teachers at LAM, as well as the direction of the LAM.
[Gust MEES]4) From WHICH schools did the students come from?
[Ronny OSWEILER]As the time for the prepartions was very limited, it was not possible to organize a national qualification contest. We took some of our most talented students, as well as some students from other schools. The students were: Laura Märker (LAM), Yannick Martins Dos Santos (LAM), Pit Baum (LAM), Kimon Leners (LAM), Lina Chen (LAM), Atreyam Sharma (École Européenne), Shawn Teusch (LGL). Pit Baum was the captain of the team.
[Gust MEES]5) Did the students travel and participate for FREE, OR did THEY have to pay a participation!?
[Annabel SCHOELLEN] The students had to pay no money for the participation at the project, otherwise I think that this could have been a barrier for potentially brilliant minds. Education and the development of technological and social skills should always be accessible for everyone. This was only possible because of our generous sponsors.
.
[Gust MEES] 6) What was the motto of the team?
.
.
[Ronny OSWEILER] For us, the team was a representation of the diversity of Luxembourg. We had 7 students with 5 different nationalities (Luxembourgish, French, German, Portuguese and Indian) . This was the reason that we took the slogan “A team as diverse as its country“. We wanted to show the other nations in Washington the acceptance and diversity that Luxembourg has to offer.
[Gust MEES] To understand the above, one must know that in Luxembourg the part of the population without Luxembourg nationality is close to 48%.
[Gust MEES] Update (25-07-2017): MarcTEUSCHand Madhumaltiwere supporting during their Washington stay! Marc was present because his son is in “TeamLuxembourg” and I made already an interview with him here:
The team got contacted by the Luxembourgish Embassy in Washington, and even got a visit from the Consul Stan Myck at their booth in the DAR Constitution Hall and by Franz Schilling during the opening ceremony. The team was also invited to visit the Embassy and was welcomed by the H.E. Ambassador Sylvie Lucas, who showed them the whole embassy and gave them historical background information about the presence of Luxembourg in Washington..
Strange things were happening, “Team BURUNDI” disappeared!
After taking part in an international robotics competition in Washington DC, six Burundi teenagers have been reported missing. Two of the students were seen leaving the US for Canada.
A police spokesperson said authorities “do not have any indication of foul play” as the investigation continues into what happened after the group attended the FIRST Global Challenge robotics competition with students from 157 nations.
Four of the teenagers seem to be in a safe place, but police are not reporting any details as yet, according to the Washington Post.

A <===> Makerfest <===> was organized at Lycée Technique ESCH/ALZETTE on 04-07-2017. Over 1.000 persons, apparently 2.000 expected, were present on the second Makerfest at LTESCH(Luxembourg), organized by BEECREATIVE, Service National de la Jeunesse, SCRIPT. Lots of different schools from around the country were present with their students (learners) from any age! As presenters of THEIR MakerSpaces and/or as visitors to take part in the many offered “ateliers”. From 3D Printing, Laser cutting, Green Screen video recordings, Fidget-Spinners making (THAT was THE HIT!), coding with Scratch, LEGO MINDSTORMS and NOT to forget <===> KNIWWELINO <===> a NEW project created by LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology) who was specially developed to meet the needs of coding for youth! It was a pleasure to see with HOW MANY fun the kids and teens were “making” and LEARNing 😉 IF THAT isn’t the future, WHAT else! 😉 I wish I would be that young again to visit such schools 😉
