Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project From Elegoo

Elegoo Super Starter-Kit Project Arduino UNO R3In one of my previous blog posts I used Arduino-UNO Starter Kit, which I ordered at Conrad (English version) and I wasn’t really impressed by the manual, it didn’t satisfy to my expectations and needs. SO, I was looking around to find some distributors for a BETTER version… At “Amazon US” I found Elegoo UNO Project Super Starter Kit with Tutorial for Arduino. First of all, the kit is delivered in a plastic box and its price is also attractive, $34.99.

The manual with the code, libraries and tutorials is on a DVD. So, I was looking first on the DVD and reading the Manual in PDF format to see the quality of the tutorials and the tutorials in PDF are very well documented. Once knowing WHAT is possible to do I made my choice for the “LCD-Tutorial“…

Below is the “Wiring diagram“, the How-To to connect the wires to make it work.

.

LCD-Wiring Diagram

.

As yo can see, it isn’t that much to do. Once the wiring ready, it is time to upload the code to the IDE and make it run to the success 😉 With the delivered code you will see the message “Hello World” on the LCD-Display.

.

Hello World-LCD-Display

.

Here below the code where the message “Hello World” is in.

.

Hello World-LCD-Display-Code

SO, why not playing around a bit to understand the code and changing the text message in <===> lcd.print(“Hello, World!”); <===> into something different, something more personal!? That’s WHAT I did, here my code change:

lcd.begin(16, 2);
// Print a message to the LCD.
lcd.print(“Gust MEES – LCD”);

which shows up as, see image below please.

.

Arduino-Change of code for LCD-Display

.

The LCD-Display shows now my name as well (photo was taken when the counter was at 62) as my age, yes I am 62 years old (actually young, LOL); meaning that WHEN I can do this you for sure are able to do it! SO, WHAT are you waiting for to START learning about coding!!?

Reflecting for ideas:

SO, WHY not assembling everything into a box and use it as your personal “Door Name Display“, play around with some text and find out…

Ready, START, GO… Have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing 😉

Maker-First Steps in Electronics-Soldering Learning-The Mini BUG Robot

.

The Mini BUG Robot

.

The Mini BUG Robot

In last blog post (tutorial) WE were practicing OUR soldering by creating “JOHNNY the ski-man“, a bit “Electronics-Art” using electronics components. In the video below, which I created with the FREEWARE <===> Windows Movie Maker <===> WE see ALSO “The Mini BUG Robot” who gives “JOHNNY” a ride. It is very easy to build that mini robot as there are ONLY six (6) components to solder.

.

.

The schematics

Let us first have a look on the schematics where WE will discover some NEW stuff, a mini motor; in this case it is an “vibration motor” which is used in smartphones. THEY exist as round, rectangular and in disk format, please check <===> Vibration Motor Images <===> in Google searches (images).

.

minibug-robot-schematics-screenshot

.

As you can see there is NOTHING special; we just put four (4) elements (2 LEDS, a vibration motor and a tantalum capacitor) in parallel. And we have a switch to switch on/off our circuit. As battery we use a “CR2032“.

My selection of Electronics books

For ANY projects WE will create there are books and also online documentations which WE will need to learn from and to GET NEW ideas as well. I will propose to YOU a selection of books and links which I have read and learned from as well; links which I use as well to incorporate into my tutorials as ALSO YouTube videos to learn from.

Software, online and/or for download

programmerman-animatedWE are really lucky today because of ICT and the internet to learn about electronics; it was NEVER THAT easy as today!! WE can find simulation software as well as schematics drawing software online and/or for download as for FREE (Open Source and FREEWARE). I remember 49 years ago when I was 12 years old and tinkering around, using curiosity to find out on the How-To things were working by disassembling them, whatever it was… Later, I was working after school (12 1/2 years old starting till 20 years…) around on any place in the village (farmer, café, gardening for private persons, etc.) to earn some money to be able to buy me necessary stuff for my electronics lab…

Nowadays WE GET all the necessary stuff online and WE DON’T need anymore to purchase an oscilloscope and a Multimeter for measuring as one can simulate everything straight on through FREE software. I am feeling HAPPY for that as it allows LEARNERS from any society status to learn about electronics!

Please check below for useful articles on Software:

Maker-First Steps in Electronics, the basics

Maker-First Steps in Electronics, the basics

.

first-steps-on-electronics-fritzing-layout-strip-board-print-out-sheet

.

Where to start?

platine-hartpapier

Strip-Board

I propose to work with system when WE use strip-boards; thus meaning: preparing them ALL the same way. Any electronics project will need a power supply, so WE will start with the power supply which will mostly be a 9 Volt battery. WE will use the outside strips to connect them to plus and minus and WE will ALSO provide a diode (1N4007) to protect against polarity reversal. As a newbie in electronics this might be the best way to protect you to destroy the electronic parts if + and – would get reversed 😉 With normal rectifier diodes the power supply voltage will typically drop by 0.8 volts. WE will have then ONLY 8.2 Volts which is enough in most cases.

WE will solder also a PCB-Connector (Printed Circuit Board Connector) where we can feed the strip-board with the power supply.

.

SO, as WE will solder a bit, it will be also a soldering training before we start on more serious projects later 😉

Check below please how the finished project will look, which we will discuss in detail on the How-To. WE use a 100 mm x 75 mm strip-board (CONRAD 529531 – 62  for 2,19€).

.

Strip-Board-Power Supply

.

First steps in electronics

Necessary material

.

screw-terminal-2-pins.

.

In above image I used a 2 pin screw terminal from CONRAD (1192188 – 62) for 0,28€ and for the wire I choose from a “Wire Kit from Velleman” (60 m from different colors).

  • full core, 0.2mm²
  • colours: 5 metres : white / blue / brown / green / yellow / orange / grey / violet + 10 metres : black / red
  • external diameter: 1.4 mm
  • max. voltage: 60 V
  • max. current: 4.3 A
  • PVC insulation
  • tinned CU
  • AWG24

.

abbiegevorrichtung.

To make sure to have proper bent edges; I suggest to bend the diode (1N4007) over the left-hand side shown “Wire Bender” (CONRAD 425869 – 62  at 3,29€).

.

.

First start to solder the 2 pin screw terminal in the middle of the strip-board, followed by the diode (1N4007). Now measure the distance and cut the wires. For the red wire (Plus) it will be 4 cm (3 cm distance), the blue wire (Minus) will be 6 cm (5 cm distance). Take the electronics cutter and strip off o,5 cm of the insulation at each end and bend it. Put it into the holes in the strip-board and solder it. P.S.: WE will use the red wire for the Plus (+) and the blue wire for the Minus (-) of the power supply; that are internationally conventions in electronics. Sometimes for the Minus (-) is also used the black color (see 9 Volt battery clip).

When WE want to start with electronics there is a little bit theory to learn as well; in electronics there are special symbols who get used in schematics. Any component (even a battery) has its own symbol. In the following tutorials and projects, WE will learn by easy step-by-step WHAT they are and HOW to make OUR PracTICE (to GET used to it…) with them. I am certainly NOT a friend of learning by heart, BUT symbols need to get learned that way to understand schematics of electronics!

Strip-Board tutorial with Fritzing

Here below a small description about the How-To to work with strip-boards in general:

.

.

After viewing the above tutorial YOU will understand. The above tutorial uses the FREE software “Fritzing” which WE will use as well in the next blog posts; you can download it here:

.

Wiring and soldering on the strip-board

Here the wiring and soldering on the strip-board, as well as the parts list:

.

first-steps-on-electronics-fritzing-layout-strip-board

.

.

resistor-color-chartAs You have remarked, I added ALSO a resistor and a LED (Light-Emitting Diode); the red (could also bee a green one) LED is lightning when the power supply (9 Volt battery) is connected. SO, YOU might solder the two components (330 Ohm resistor and LED) as well, not mandatory BUT it will give YOU a bit more training on soldering and alerts YOU to NOT solder when it is on!! NEVER work on whatever project with connected (switched on) power supply <===> Safety first!

WHY has the resistor a value of 330 Ohm?

In above example we used a 5 mm red LED with this characteristics: 2.25 Volt and 20 mA current (that’s the maximum values which DON’T have to become higher otherwise the LED will get destroyed) and as power supply we use a 9 Volts battery.  WE will use the “Online Calculator” to calculate the value of the resistor. First let us do some mental calculation, there WE DON’T need any calculator. WE have a 9 Volts battery and the LED will have maximum 2.25 Volts, so “9 V – 2.25 V = 6.75 V” which needs to get taken away from the LED to avoid destruction.

.

led-series-resistor-calculator-330-ohm

..

THAT value of 337.5 Ohms doesn’t exist! Resistors are manufactured by following <===> In 1952 the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) decided to define the resistance and tolerance values into a norm, to ease the mass manufacturing of resistors. These are referred to as preferred values or E-series, and they are published in standard IEC 60063:1963. These standard values are also valid for other components like capacitors, inductors and Zener diodes. The preferred values for resistors were established in 1952, but the concept of the geometric series was already introduced by army engineer Renard in the 1870s.

By checking the below link, WE will see that the closest value is 330 Ohm. BTW: The symbol for “Ohm” is “Ω“; SO, we write 330 Ω. Tip: You find it in the “Special Characters” in any editing software.

framing-in-educationMY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

Check ALSO (Up from 11 years old, give THEM THE confidence THEY need to grow):

.

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

Bring in YOUR kids to such creative makerplaces WHERE THEY can develop (and perhaps parents as well…) THEIR creativity and GET interested in something WHICH could boost THEIR interest into ICT in their future 😉

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

Creativity and Maker-Spaces | BEECREATIVE

Nadine SCHIRTZ and Yvonne ZOTZAs on July 25th 2016 I had an interview with Nadine SCHIRTZ and Yvonne ZOTZ in the The flagship makerspace of the national Youth Service SNJ “BASE 1” at Forum Geesseknäppchen in Luxembourg-City. This is the second interview of a series which I intend to do; the first one was about <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System.

I hereby thank a lot Mrs. Nadine SCHIRTZ for having accepted my request for having an interview with her. My first request was made over Social Media Facebook (on PM; Private Message) as WE are friends on Facebook (Social Media) and I am ALSO member of the “Advisory Board” from BEESECURE where Nadine is ALSO involved. Nadine replied to my request with giving me her work eMail Address. I sent her an official request by eMail and it was getting accepted; as YOU see Social Media has a lot of advantages 😉

I thank ALSO a lot Yvonne ZOTZ, the responsible person for the “BASE 1 at Forum Geesseknäppchen” (left-hand on the above photo).

It was a pleasure to talk together for 1h:30 to two lovely ladies with a LOT of competency and professional behavior! I enjoyed very much that conversation as especially WE were talking about the “Pedagogy” and “Social” behind and that it ISN’T pure “Technology”, THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!

Nadine is officially working for http://www.snj.public.lu/fr. Makerspaces in Luxembourg are set up via the BEE CREATIVE project by SCRIPT and SNJ in both formal education (schools) and non-formal education(child daycare structures, youth houses,…) settings.

Yvonne is THE “Space-Keeper“, the responsible person for the MakerspaceBASE 1” and she is ALSO running under contract of http://www.snj.public.lu/fr. Let us mention ALSO that the “Makerspaces” in Luxembourg are embodied by the “SCRIPT” from Luxembourg EDUcation System, where M. Serge LINCKELS coordinates them; I interviewed M. Serge LINCKELS already <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System.

Let us remember HOW the STRATEGY of the Luxembourg EDUcation System is by watching the picture below, please:

As mentioned already above, each Makerspace has its “Space-Keeper”, the responsible person of that place. These “Space-Keeper’s” connect together WITH THEIR TEAMS throughNetworking“, Thus meaning: they have meetings over the internet through the “Cloud”<===> [NS] WHERE they meet regularly and in person in different makerspaces and at events to exchange views and projects. Of course, networking via IT-tools is another important aspect. They make an exchange of  “GOOD PracTICEs”, NEW ideas, NEW projects…

Let me ALSO tell YOU dear readers THAT the girls got my questions send per eMail as a preparation before I met them and that THEY even didn’t talk about it, well THAT is WHAT I call clever and smart at the same time; THEY knew WHAT I wanted to talk about and THEY used it to talk in a context and NOT as in a SCHOOL test!! Well done GIRLS 😉 I loved it!! 😉

WHAT is the STRATEGY and Pedagogy behind AND the Social!?

Information LiteracyWell, that is VERY interesting as I found out by discussing in the interview with the two young ladies, who by the way were VERY professional and with a LOT of COMPETENCY: looks like Luxembourg will have a bright future on ICT in the next coming years!!

I was VERY OPEN-MINDED and listening to Yvonne as she explained me very well WHAT is behind such “Makerspace” places; well I knew it already WHAT it is, BUT HOW it is done in Luxembourg I didn’t know really NOR do OTHERS (my readers…) probably!! Nadine as well gave me ALSO some GOOD points and both girls (Ladies) explained me very well WHAT is the point behind!!

Well, Luxembourg is following NEW trends in EDUcation as well, as ICT is becoming THE MAJOR slogan for the country <===> #DigitalLëtzebuerg #DigitalLuxembourg #Digital4EDUcation <===> AND THAT Luxembourg has to do something OUT of the NORMAL to shine!! I agree with THAT by 100%!! Luxembourg doesn’t have enough qualified people in the ICT-sector and has to work for to get them soon! Through the “makerspaces” kids might get influenced as well to be interested in their future to study in ICT!

.

.Profile of a modern school leader-2015

[NS] With BEE CREATIVE, Luxembourg has become the first country to develop e-skills and e-creativity by implementing makerspaces in both formal and non-formal education systems. This is a milestone in the thrive towards an enlightened and motivated generation of “cyber citizens” in the political frame of “Digital Luxembourg”.

[GM] I totally agree with THAT!!

Please check ALSO my blog posts:

.

SO WHAT did Yvonne and Nadine tell me WHICH made me listening MORE? Well, Makerspaces are THE first place to GET kids interested in something special, a place WHERE creativity could GET fostered, WHERE TEAMS get build WITH SAME interests without knowing on the beginning that such things could even happen!! Youth is invited by groups of minimum of six (6), MOSTLY from EDUcation, BUT if clever NOT necessarily to use the ONLY EDUcation!!! Contact the girls to find out 😉

Let us talk ALSO about Coaching, the little YOU exercised and trying to get everybody into the boat WHERE a Win-Win situation is exercised WITHOUT any sort of Hierarchy so that YOUTH can develop itself WITHOUT FEAR of WHATEVER (#SchoolCocoon in mind…); teachers become learners and learners become teachersA GRATEFUL exchange of knowledge, ISN’T it!? WE are living in 21st Century right and here it gets practiced 😉

Check out ALSO my blog post about Coaching:

Let us talk ALSO about <===> Emotional Intelligence, called ALSO EQ (Emotional Quotient); and cite ALSO Daniel GOLEMAN:

The Forum Geesseknäppchen” in Luxembourg-City has really ALL WHAT is needed to GET youth the possibilities to develop a creative mind as well that THEY are guided with GOOD trained coaches (teachers, educators…), supervised by “SCRIPT“; let us have a look:

  • Jeunes scientifiques (Jonk Fuerscher)
  • Mérite Jeunesse
  • Projet SQUAT
    • As I got told the “Projet SQUAT” is: there is a special room in the “Forum Geesseknäppchen” who could get hired; this room is equipped with ALL the necessary stuff for holding meetings and to use the ICT stuff in it. It’s a place WHERE young entrepreneurs could come in and GET coached to realize THEIR projects, it’s about <===> Project Based LEARNing (PBL) <===>… My personal meaning. Luxembourg has NOW its “1€ Company Law” accepted, thus meaning: to boost “Entrepreneurship” companies could get created by ONLY investing 1€ for its creation, a simplified way of an “a.s.b.l.“; I guess that this concept together with “Projet SQUAT” will have a BIG success as soon as it will GET more known by young (and old, why not…) entrepreneurs! As on 16-January-2017 this would be possible!!

WHAT will happen NEXT!???

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-aigainformation1Well, there are some challenges in the air 😉 I got told THAT there is a <===> MakerFest <===> on 19-20 December 2016  in the “Forum Geesseknäppchen” in Luxembourg-City WHERE the organisators are looking to make it a VERY BIG EVENT while using as MUCH possible place as possible inside the building to give YOUTH its way to develop!! AND of course a LOT of prizes from http://www.snj.public.lu/fr and from possible sponsors…

A fashion défilé (catwalk) will be organized and the kids will wear their clothes with wearables (which they created themselves…), kids will play THEIR OWN composed and/or sampled music for the background music and much more…

Learn more:

Update (07-04-2017): Up from September 2017 there will be “BEE CREATIVE for kids” introduced! Makerspaces will get held ALSO THEN in the “Maisons Relais” and in the Primary School.

Update (04-07-2017): A <===> Makerfest <===> was organized at Lycée Technique ESCH/ALZETTE on 04-07-2017. Over 1.000 persons were present on the second Makerfest at LTESCH (Luxembourg) on 04-07-2017, organized by BEECREATIVE, Service National de la Jeunesse, SCRIPT. Lots of different schools from around the country were present with their students (learners) from any age!
It was a pleasure to see with HOW MANY fun the kids and teens were “making” and LEARNing 😉

The questions for the interview

Chat icon.

.Concerning the questions and answers WE will use initials such as:

  • [GM] for Gust MEES
  • [NS] for Nadine SCHIRTZ

.

Questions for interview <===> Makerspaces

  • [GM] WHEN (date) were Makerspaces in Luxembourg opened ?
    • [NS] „The flagship makerspace of the national Youth Service SNJ“ was “Base1” which opened in November 2015. All of the six actually open Makerspaces were launched on the same day by Minister Claude Meisch in November 2015. After the launch event, the different makerspaces adopted their own rhythm. Some needed more time to fill up their space with workshops, others were ready to start right away. As for the SNJ makerspace “Base1”, it is active and open on a daily basis since January 2016.
  • [GM] How many Makerspaces do actually exist in Luxembourg ? (I know there are six & more will open soon?)
    • [NS] Actually six makerspaces are up and running in Luxembourg. 5 of them are set in high schools. As BEE CREATIVE grows, the interest in Makerspaces becomes bigger and bigger. Right now, SCRIPT has a full list of secondary schools and even a couple of primary schools who want to open their own makerspace in the coming schoolyear. As for SNJ, we are focusing on the non-formal education settings. Meaning that we are going to fully support at least 3 Maisons Relais across Luxembourg to open a makerspace in their premises. The maker movement and interest in IT creativity really is a milestone in Luxembourgish education.
  • [GM] Do You have actually some statistics on how many people (also by age…) have visited the Makerspaces ? Maybe ALSO graphs about it ?
    • [NS] I don’t know for the school makerspaces, but at “Base1”, we counted 1200 visits in the first six months. Tendency: growing… 😉
  • [GM] Is it possible for anyone to visit the “Makerspaces” OR are they ONLY available from persons of EDU (Educators, teachers, students, learners)?
    • [NS] Logistics sometimes make it difficult for school makerspaces to open their doors to non-students. They do their best however to welcome a large audience during events etc. It is free for every makerspace to choose how the access to their space should be handled. At Base1, young people are welcome to work on their projects. We don’t really care whether they come on their own during “Open space” times or with a group from school, a youth house, a Maison Relais. If you’re not sure whether you can come to Base1, just call and ask…
  • [GM] Are the Makerspaces ALSO OPEN during the school holidays ?
    • [NS] Right now, the only Makerspace open during school holidays is the Base1. (The one where we are for the interview). However this might change in the future. As I already said, each makerspace can choose when to open or close their doors and the need to keep them open during holidays might increase in the future.
  • [GM] I have recently read that « Girls in Tech » were ALSO in one Makerspace, are there more such events planned ? Next Girls in Tech Event to Explore Creative Programming and a Maker Space (31-05-2016) as I find this very important to boost it, especially in programming (coding). Girls are very GOOD in this 😉 Check history of programming (ADA, #WWII, encrypting, Apollo code for moon landing…)

[GM] Concerning <===> Girls in Tech <===> did YOU know that there were already a LOT of celebrities (today) in programming (coding) in history?

My Personal View AND PracTICE

.

Framing in EDUcationMY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts.

Check ALSO:

Check out my blog posts:

My Memories and Nostalgia

.

Framing in EDUcation

The <===> Makerspace Movement <===> ISN’T something NEW actually as it happend already +/- 45-50 years ago with an other name! At that time it was called <===> Do It Yourself (#DIY) <===> and was seen as pure HOBBY and NOT endorsed by EDUcation! SO, it took minimum 45 years before EDUcation realized its importance!

WHY do I say this? Well, I was one of those pioneers at that time in my youth; I used already electronics (transistors, integrated circuits, LED displays and also analog displays…) in my learning in PracTICE projects as it wasn’t foreseen yet… I won ALSO an electronics contest in 1979 from Germanic countries, which later helped me to find a BETTER job!

For evidence, here some pictures below:

I hear most screaming ALREADY, WE are ONLY on EDUcation 1.0, or EDUcation 2.0 and starting to LEARN; EDUcation 3.0 is foreseen in the next years!!! Give us the time to LEARN!!! Well, WE are ALREADY on EDUcation 4.0, did YOU know THAT!? SO… it might be GOOD to START learning straight off NOW about EDUcation 4.0 as the LOWER versions (EDUcation 3.0) are ALREADY included, isn’t it!?

Some Reminders First!

Image-quotes-creation

.

The above mentioned quote from “Albert EINSTEIN” SHOULD get to be taught to Educators, Teachers, Instructors! We, as teaching persons should remember that one on any teaching lesson, this as well as in the classroom and especially when WE publish online (website, blog, Twitter posts…).

Challenges of future learning and teaching-2014

Click the above image, please, to access the “pdf” document.

.

SO… WHAT’S EDUcation4.0? OR at least WHAT SHOULD it be!? I advocate and I (try to) PUSH a transparent <===> #LEARNing and #LEARNingToLEARN through #PracTICE by #LEARNingByDoing <===> as students, learners need to first of ALL to know WHAT and WHY they need to learn that special topic. Transparency is a MUST in 21st Century: tell the learners, students THEIR <===> #LEARNingPath, it is their right to know it <===>, make it visual by designing the course so that they can see it and experiment around with it, they will learn EVEN before the course(s) start, which in my opinion is GOOD, just be prepared about that. As more they know about it before it even starts as better it is, be wise and calculate that to create groups where they exchange the already known with others who don’t know it yet; make THEM ALSO teachers who share THEIR knowledge. Let it GO, let it FLOW, make it a win-win situation. Let THEM take THEIR responsibility about LEARNing whereby YOU as teachers, educators, instructors are the coach WHO guides THEM through the <===> learning process<===.

Create a <===> ThingLink <===> LEARNingPath Design <===> where ALL your learning steps are included, e.g. <===> Design The Learning Of YOUR Learners, Students | Ideas <===.

Mention ALSO, probably the most important WHAT skills they will learn about AND WHAT is THE benefit for THEM!!! YOU will create a <===> success course(s) <===> isn’t that WHAT YOU WANT!?

Check below, please, to find an example of a designed course for <===> Digital CitiZENship <===

Learn more about design:

As YOU will probably have found out, it is about <===> PracTICE and student centered <===>! WHY!? Well, WE are living in the 21st Century and life has changed, the role of EDUcators and Teachers has changed ALSO! NOW it is the students, learner who will come MORE in the focus as the OLD known TEACHING is OUT, it is NOW about <===> TEACHINg about <===> LEARNing To LEARN <===> where the teaching persons act as a Coach who guide THEIR LEARNers to become independent <===> Life-Long LEARNers <===!

.

.

Chat iconCreate a FAQ’s list together with the learners, students WHICH THEY decide about the FAQ’s. Give THEM a double task job; creating the FAQ’s AND let THEM make curation ALSO about it, and WHY NOT, let THEM create a <===> ThingLink <===> ALSO where THEY integrate THEIR LEARNing into it. AND if enough time and/or as creative homework let THEM create ALSO some comics (optional) about the <===> How-To <===> 😉 AND don’t forget please: ask THEM if there is something which THEY have seen what is in there interest and if possible learn about it and share it with THEM, so THEY will learn it and will be happy 😉

WHAT Are THE Skills Needed From Students In The Future!? OR, WHAT Are THE Jobs Look Like In The Future!?

That are actually questions which I get asked very often from people and where I could ask ONLY the first one! WHAT Are THE Skills Needed From Students In The Future!? Social Media DON’TS

sharing iconAs the name says it already, it is about <===> SOCIAL <===>, so stay social, please. When using a “Twitter Chat” YOU are not alone, YOU will receive posts from OTHERS who are sharing stuff which could be of interest to YOU AND YOUR audience. YOU are NOT alone, DON’T forget this, please. YOU are, once connected to the internet, part of a global community. Everybody can take part in YOUR chat from around the globe, so posts (Tweets) will be visible in YOUR chats, that is called: Tweets in the stream.

Visible Thinking: see it as if YOU read a Newspaper, YOU won’t read everything as not ALL of interest to YOU, do the same when reading the Tweets, read what is of interest, BUT DON’T block persons who are sharing, NOR “Mute” persons, that is NOT SOCIAL! Accept to be social and follow the above advice, if YOU can’t then it would be better to create a “Forum” where YOU could stay alone with ONLY the people you want to be together, BUT that is “Middle Agesmentality 😉

Sounds hard!? If so, please check if YOU have a fixed mindset and/or how-to get a growth mindset, YOU want to adapt to 21st Century, isn’t it?:

Through this PLN, educators, teachers and students will amplify their knowledge, they can build themselves a <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management <===>, a PKM.

DO’S In Teaching OR Let Us Say BETTER Learning Through PracTICE

Learning By Doing is the 21st Century mantra…

.

experientiallearninginfographic-8-2014-final

Click the above image, please, to access its origin.

.

[GM] My experience over 12 years (up from 2002), benefits which I encountered for students, learners: I prepared every time a visual for my learners to show THEM WHAT they will learn and how WE would learn this together, any station of the <===> Learning Path <===> got explained, so they knew at any moment WHERE they were in their <===> Learning Process <===. Thus meaning: I designed the course as shown above (with different tools [as facilitators] as possible today…). Already 12 years ago 😉

WHAT did the learners, students benefit and HOW were they feeling?

Students and learners, especially adults and seniors (Andragogy), prefer working actively <===> Learning By Doing, PracTICE <===> as THEY are NOT really friends of THEORY! SO they were feeling much more FREE as they could act on their own, experimenting around, making some mistakes and learning from them. They learned more quickly as a result, once the mistakes transformed into positive thinking by NO fear anymore to try out NEW things, they were using their gained knowledge at home to learn on their own for their own PracTICE. They have a <===> profit <===> for their private life, so they love it to learn that way as it is useful!

WHAT are the skills Educators, Teachers should learn to master and teach the students!?

Well, some say that this is very difficult to find out!? Actually it isn’t at all. Let me explain, please. The MOST IMPORTANT, as mentioned already above is to find WHAT could be of interest to the learners, students, the benefit for them for their private life as well as the skills the workforce needs! And in this case WHAT I propose to YOU will be benefit for both!

These skills are concerned about:

.

Skills by Learning-By-Doing

Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.

Concerning feedback: ALL of my proposed courses (already in 2002-2003) had (A MUST) to be evaluated by its course participants, this through an online formular to evaluate THE quality of my courses! This was a rule which I brought in myself to guarantee a consistent quality in my courses. Here below (let me brag a bit) one (I have the permission of the person to publish it) feedback who is more worth than a diploma for me. The students, learners opinion is the mirror about WHAT WE have taught them! PS: the below mentioned document is framed and displayed in my private (at home) office, so that I can see it each day to remember me to maintain the same quality. If being once in doubt (yes, that happens also sometimes, nobody is perfect…) I have a look back again on it and it gives me the force to continue again…

Reference 2003-GM

.

The above text is in French, if YOU are NOT used to the language of Molière please check this App with whom YOU can translate, actually very useful when visiting other countries then yours 😉

Translation Apps:

A bit of the whole story about the above reference: When I started to give courses in 2002 about ICT and the use in EDUcation, there was NOTHING where I could have copied something, nor references! I had to start from scratch!!! At that time I spent +/- 30 hours for one (1) hour course giving!!! I was reading books to find out about pedagogy with ICT, here my list <===> 21st Century Learning and Teaching: Multilingual Books Recommendations <===>

SO ALSO, I didn’t know the person mentioned in above reference (too much occupied to give BEST possible course…), it is ONLY after the course when I was reading his evaluation that I asked him; he was a retired “Director of differentiated EDUcation” (just 3 months retired as far as I can remember) with a “Doctorat in EDUcation Sciences“, I was perplex at first moment, YOU can imagine; getting such a brilliant evaluation from someone with such a reputation and education. I am very grateful to him for that, it is STILL my <===> Leitfaden <===> for my daily tasks to keep up my professional way!

Multidisciplinary Learning and Teaching

sharing-iconFirst of all: I hated since the beginning of my learning adventure in my youth (ages ago…) the linear learning. Thus meaning: first learning module A, then module B, module C and so on… It sounded stupid to me as a 14 year old (45 years ago…) and STILL sounds THE same today! At the time, in college, in mathematics WE learned about the “Set Theory” and I was asking about the WHY WE as students SHOULD learn this, as I didn’t (at that time) see its importance. None of the teachers could explain to me, THEY all just said: it’s on the program, on the curriculum! BTW: when YOU have a look on Wikipedia and check different languages (EN, FR, DE) you will see that THEY didn’t understood it not yet as it is badly explained… Giving credit to the German part of Wikipedia “Mengenlehre” as they at least show practical examples… The French part “Théorie des ensembles” doesn’t show even any images and is pure theory :((( BUT, the French translation of the word “Set Theory” explains about WHAT it is: “ensembles”  which means “together“, things which have something in common. It’s ONLY years later after school left, that I understood the importance of the “Set Theory” when I was looking myself to find an answer on reflecting on how to resolve problems, to find their common points, you know “If then, go to, else…”…

I even trained my brain to think that way, yes that is possible, and when I became an instructor and giving courses to teachers, adults, seniors and teens I used it even more. and that is also the way YOU should teach your students, it helps THEM to become “Critical THINKing” and “Proactive THINKing” persons.

Youth Leadership, A MUST To Prepare THEM For THE Future, Let THEM HELP To Build It

programmerman-animatedWHY is Youth Leadership important? Please check below and read the full article from . As a narrative researcher, Marilyn studies how human stories and experiences are linked to learning and meaning-making. Her recent study, Civic Learning at the Edge, discovered how caring relationships with adults and transformative learning experiences during adolescence fostered the development of young people who became engaged in social and environmental causes. Marilyn Price-Mitchell is a Fellow at the Institute for Social Innovation at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA. She has a Ph.D. in human development and an M.A. in human and organizational systems from Fielding. Her undergraduate degree, in sociology, comes from the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on child and adolescent development and youth civic engagement. She is the co-founder of the National ParentNet Association, a nonprofit that builds family, school, and community partnerships that support youth. What Teachers Will Learn in this Project: Professional Development

vdujwtjyx3uq-252anv-p2pnicubuculei01By using this “Project“, Teachers and Learners will both benefit from it, together they can learn and improve their knowledge! I recommend it for teachers to grow their “Professional Development“. Even when NOT having already the knowledge for this “Project”, teachers have a lot of time between the different courses to learn what is needed for the next session. They will grow together with the Learners while working on that “Project” and won’t have any pressure if they organize well up from the beginning, making a good preparation!

By using this “Project“, teachers will acquire knowledge of Education 3.0, including: Blog creation, Curation, Creativity, Motivation, Challenge, Critical Thinking, Proactive Thinking, Internet-Safety, knowledge of the use of great tools for community work, Copyright, Learners interests, Learning by Doing, Peer-Review, Peer-to-Peer-LearningMindmapping, the use of Flow Charts, good preparation, sustainability, Accessibility…

I actually advise teachers to take this opportunity, learning together with the learners as a Challenge! Create yourselves ALSO a Blog about YOUR interests and let it ALSO get “Peer-Review” by the learners! YOU don’t have anything to loose, YOU can ONLY win, winning on experience, winning the confidence of YOUR learners, winning on Team-Work, winning of knowledge, winning on getting more courage, winning on learning new stuff… YOU can show the learners ALSO that in the 21st Century it is NOT anymore “Us v Them“, BUT “Us & Them” to go for a “Win-Win Situation” by accepting this way; which I think (my personal meaning) is the BEST. I did it ten (10) years with adults, seniors and teens and it was a great experience which worked perfectly! Get the courage and jump into it 😉 You will have a lot of fun by learning from each other and YOU will make a strong “Community” by continuing in the same way with other “Projects“…

.

Image-quotes-creation

Remember the above quote when creating YOUR blog, please! Created with QUOZIO

.

PS: YOU might have noticed that I highlighted the word ===> “Creativity”, WHY!? <===  Creativity boosts the way of Learning!

.

What is the most important for the Students, Learners when creating a blog?

Chat iconWhen you teach your students, learners for the first time to create a blog; ask them what their interests are. Read more here about interests: How to Fuel Students’ Learning Through Their Interests.

Then show them some blogs, different ways of publishing:

                  • Text ONLY.
                  • Text with ONLY one image.
                  • Creative blogs.
                  • Blogs using nearly ALL possible multimedia included.

.

.

I will give you some chosen examples here below so that you could have an overview:

And my own blog using “comics“, in case of someone would be interested to create a blog with “comics“:

.

Knowing now what possibilities they have to create their own blog, give them ALSO a short introduction about Copyright, tell them that they are NOT allowed to copy & paste everything what they find on the internet. My blog below could serve as a guide:

I recommend you to use the following infographic, which you might also distribute to the learners:

.

Why should WE as Teachers choose that way as described above?

sharing-iconWhen the learners work based on their own interests they are learning BETTER, quicker and with motivation. They should get even told that they can make mistakes and that later the whole class together with the teacher will talk about what these mistakes are and how to avoid them in the future. The learners will work on a “Learning By Doing” base, which helps them to develop their creativity and helps also to develop their personality

Check also:

.

By choosing the mentioned way above what else could WE expect?

programmerman-animatedWhile you are explaining the learners about how to create a blog, make sure also that they have already a bit knowledge on how to search on the internet by using the search engines such as Google. Most of them will probably know a bit about it, but give them a deeper insight about it! I recommend viewing together the new interactive website from Google itself here, “How Search Works“:

And also Google-Search-Education here:

As the learners are anyway searching information for their blog and that this information needs to get stored somewhere, I suggest to teach them also about Curation. You will find the necessary links on the bottom of this blog!

At the same moment tell them ALSO that on the internet are dangers, that websites could be infected and by visiting them they could ALSO infect their computers. I suggest that you show the learners my following blogs:

Check the above mentioned blogs and you will see that it is very easy, there are ONLY 2 programs to install which take ONLY 5 minutes and who will show the learners by their search adventure which websites are trustful and which websites are malicious! They will learn then also how to surf on a safe way… Check also the video below and show it to your learners.

.

Now WE can bring in Critical Thinking ALSO!

.
vdujwtjyx3uq-a8sc55-blueman20
.
Once the learners finished their blog, let them make a Peer – Review and let them make also constructive critics to each other! Use a  mind-map later where they could bring in their global thinking.

.

WE can use the blog also for Proactive Thinking, HOW!?

sharing-iconPrepare a mind-map where the learners could bring in their Critical Thinking, let them make brainstorming and then let them bring in their reflections on the mind-map. This finished coach them on How To make Proactive Thinking. What could have been avoided up from the beginning and how! Let them use also a mind-map for this task, perhaps the same while using a different color for Critical Thinking and Proactive Thinking! Talk to them now and ask them some questions about Proactive Thinking and what they learned…

Choose  a mind-map of your choice and practice a bit with it, here below a non-exhaustive list:

Learning basics of IT-Security and Cyber-Security

.

sid2014-anim-banner

.

Chatting, talkingBeing online since 1998 and giving courses about ICT more than 10 years the practice and my online excursions show me that IT-Security (basics of Cyber-Security) and Internet-Safety are not yet taught enough. Seriously I think there is a need to talk and teach about existing laws in different countries and show the learners that they have not ONLY rights but also responsibilities; teachers the same for YOU 😉

In the 21st Century, Education has a BIG responsibility to adapt to the very quick change in the world and to teach the students the knowledge they need and which are required to fulfill the market’s needs!

The market’s needs are ALSO to employ people with the basics of Cyber-Security knowledge as a modern company needs to protect its online reputation and a data loss could be lethal to them, their ruin eventually! SO, the new employees is the students coming out of school, College, High school, Universities; ALL of them need to have the basic knowledge of  Cyber-Security to be competitive in a working market where there is more and more unemployment worldwide…

===> A company would take advantage of a new employee who as already the necessary knowledge of Cyber-Security as the company doesn’t need to train him, which saves it a lot of money! <===

HOW COULD THAT BE IN PRACTICE???

help-books-aj.svgajash01-1
First of all I recommend you to read some books to understand, I recommend books from Howard GARDNER and Daniel GOLEMAN.
.
  • 5 Minds For The Future (Howard GARDNER)  to understand what the world needs for abilities from students in 21st Century
  • The Disciplinary Mind: the mastery of major schools of thought, including science, mathematics, and history, and of at least one professional craft.
  • The Synthesizing Mind: the ability to integrate ideas from different disciplines or spheres into a coherent whole and to communicate that integration to others.
  • The Creating Mind: the capacity to uncover and clarify new problems, questions and phenomena.
  • The Respectful Mind: awareness of and appreciation for differences among human beings and human groups.
  • The Ethical Mind: fulfillment of one’s responsibilities as a worker and as a citizen.
.

When having read the recommended books YOU will understand much better what are the actions to take and certainly there will be also some new ideas from YOU ;) Read also my blog: 21st Century Learning and Teaching: Multilingual Books Recommendations

Nobody Is Perffect! Any OS Is Vulnerable!

A group of children in Alaska took over their classroom computers after phishing account details from teachers. They asked teachers at Schoenbar Middle School, for 12 to 13-year-olds, to enter admin names and passwords to accept a false software update, according to reports.

What can be done to turn this around?

.

teacherSeriously and convinced, I think that there is a MUST to teach the basics of Cyber-Security by Education in any schools around in the world, and this up from the early age! The kids will understand it very quickly, they are more intelligent as most adults think as their computers and Smartphones are the (nearly) most important to them! I have worked together with teens (11 years old and +) and showed them How To protect their computers and how to stay informed about new threats, that was a piece of cake for them, I even didn’t think that it could be that easy, I was surprised! Convincing adults is (???) more (very) hard!

So, how could that be in practice? That was the question I asked myself (oh yes, I thought a lot…) and here are my propositions and advice:

Apart from teaching the basics of Cyber-Security in schools by traditional learning, one should try ALSO to involve and engage youth in that process of learning, learning by doing and learning to have responsibility! IT’s ALL about responsibility anyway when working and using ICT (BYOD included)! This could be realized with a piece of theater (it took me a year of development) where they could be involved as actors (players) and also by giving them the feeling of being an IT-Hero by becoming Security-Scouts. Sounds strange? Check the links below to learn more:

It looks like there is a big problem between the IT-department in schools and the Teachers as in some institutions Social Media is forbidden and a lot of restrictions to resources are made, which is certainly NOT a big pleasure for the educators, nor for the learners! Tips for the IT-Admin

.

..

.

.

My advice:

.

I created a very easy to follow plan on how schools could make Cyber-Security (IT-Security) much more easy for the IT-Admin when it would get followed; BUT the IT-Admin SHOULD try to make it a REFLEX on any FRIDAY thus to remind people of the Security-Task! That’s why I created on Twitter the #Hashtag ===> #FSCD <=== which means “Friday Security Check Day“!!!

Learn in one week how to get Best protection/Introduction

.

vdujwtjyx3uq-252anv-p2pnicubuculei01In previous blogs I have presented already the different security programs who help us to stay secure on Internet and not to infect others in the community because our computer is infected! The text below is just a reminder:

In the real world our car needs some maintenance and technical control to make sure that there is no danger to other participants in traffic (pedestrians and drivers…), so the same in the virtual world. Our computer is the “virtual car” who is driving on the “Data Highway” (Internet), it needs maintenance and especially care about IT-Security and safety

I will prepare seven (7) different blogs, one for each day of the week so you don’t need a lot of time to spend for installing the programs and to get used to them… These blogs will refer anyway to the already published blogs and/or would be a simple copy with practical advice and you can use them how you would like. One per day or if you have the necessary time, even more, up to you…

As you can see in the table “Necessary Time”, most actions need ONLY 5-10 minutes! Eaaaaaaaasy to follow and to use, what are you waiting for!? 😉

.

For those who have the necessary time: I suggest to you to install first the FREE program “Security Score” (for WINDOWS ONLY) and start to check after your Tuesday-Task and after any days task to see the evolution of your security score! This will probably make you more confident and you certainly will try to reach a better “Security Score”, this for your motivation… Try it out:

Protect your Smartphone and be aware of malicious QR-Codes

qrcodes-intro-2

[Start Text from http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/10/qr_code_sticker_scam/Cybercrooks are putting up stickers featuring URLs embedded in Quick Response codes (QR codes) as a trick designed to drive traffic to dodgy sites. [End Text from http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/10/qr_code_sticker_scam/]

As it is impossible to see ONLY by viewing the QR-Code to detect if it redirects to an infected website, it is a MUST to install a QR-Reader who controls before sending you to the website! I recommend:

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW!

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-trafficlightgreendan01 .

    • We are ALL responsible for a secure Internet!
    • Automatic Windows Update must be enabled
    • For Apple devices: ALL the updates must be installed also!
    • Third Party Programs are responsible for 78% of vulnerabilities!!! What are Third Party Applications (Programs)? Knowing that third party programs also are vulnerable, we must also update them! Use SECUNIA PSI to update automatically third party programs https://secunia.com/
    • Browsers (ALL) need to get updated! This is also a MUST for Apple devices!
  • While using “BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device), we ALL (Teachers, Educators and Learners) are responsible, not the IT-Admin alone!
  • While using “BYOD” we need a strong “BYOD-Policy” at least!
  • While using “BYOD” it is recommended to have also a “MDM” (Mobile Device Management)!
  • We learned that there is a need for “Mobile Device Management (MDM)” and “Mobile Application Management (MAM)”
  • It is recommended to organize a “Teacher-Parents-Meeting” to explain the parents that their kids are safe in your school, explaining them the efforts you make and asking them also to help their kids to respect the “BYOD-Policy”!
  • The weakest link in the Security Chain is the human! If you don’t respect certain advice you will get tricked by the Cyber-Criminals!

===> NOBODY is perfect! A security by 100% doesn’t exist! <===

Protecting the organization’s network and its data from attack and misuse requires more than just a BYOD mentality; establishing secure, mobile-enabled operations requires a mobility access control program that includes corporate-provisioned, approved employee- and partner-owned devices as well as unmanaged guest devices.

===> I created a new Hashtag#FSCD which means “Friday Security Check Day” + will remind YOU any Friday 2 check your devices 4 updates <===
