CitiZEN-Science: WHAT is it and is it worth to follow?!!
[Begin Text Wikipedia]:
Citizen science (CS; also known as community science, crowd science, crowd-sourced science, civic science, volunteer monitoring, or online citizen science) is scientific research conducted, in whole or in part, by amateur (or nonprofessional) scientists.[1] Citizen science is sometimes described as “public participation in scientific research,” participatory monitoring, and participatory action research whose outcomes are often advancements in scientific research, as well as an increase in the public’s understanding of science.[2][3] Based on Alexa rankings[4]iNaturalist is currently the most popular citizen science website[5] followed by eBird[6] and then Zooniverse[7] in second and third place respectively.

Find below a GREAT article, who explains very well:
[Begin Text SciStarter]:
As we face global challenges, we may want to find local ways to make a difference in protecting endangered species, safeguarding water sources, preventing disease, or accelerating medical research. Science needs more eyes, ears and perspectives than any scientist possesses. Enter citizen science: a collaboration between scientists and those of us who are just curious or concerned and motivated to make a difference. People just like you are collecting data by taking photos of clouds or streams, documenting changes in nature, using smartphone sensors to help scientists monitor water and air quality, or playing games to help advance health and medical research. A citizen science project can involve one person or millions of people collaborating towards a common goal. Typically, public involvement is in data collection, analysis, or reporting.
There are thousands of opportunities to participate in this movement that’s sweeping the globe! Find them on SciStarter.org .

Well, I don’want to say much more about this, apart that I back it up! I find it extremely interesting and it should get used in schools as it would certainly make students interested into Science.
As far as I know, it is ALSO used in a school in my country Luxembourg:

Welcome to the official game of the 2017 FIRST Global Challenge, H2O FLOW! In H2O FLOW, teams learn about real-world water scarcity and contamination issues. In the game, two villages exist on either side of a contaminated river. The villagers compete to create and store purified water in their respective reserves. In a laboratory up stream, the villagers come together to research the contaminants and ultimately create a purification system so contaminants are removed before they reach the villages, thus providing clean water for all. In the end, each village prepares for the coming flood by searching for higher ground.
Match is 2:30 minutes long and six (6) teams are competing where one team (3 countries) is called “Aqua Team” and the other one (3 countries) is called “Hydro Team“.
.
Best is to watch the video below, who explains in detail:
Team Luxembourg finished 61 out of 163 teams (157 nations)!
[Ronny OSWEILER]After plenty hours of hard work, Team Luxembourg has been awarded the “Certificate of Excellence” that recognizes professional achievement, advanced education, commitment to STEM, time management and superior performance during the competition.
Congratulations to all students!
Team Luxembourg could have been 48th, if in game 5, we would have done the climbing, but due to technical reasons the robot was stuck. Those 20 points would have been important.
[Gust MEES] We will discuss this in the section “Incident in round five for Team Luxembourg“, below!
Please find below some photos of “Team Luxembourg’s Robot“: Click on the photos to enlarge them.

Incident in round five for Team Luxembourg
[Ronny OSWEILER] In round five, the robot of Team Canada touched our robot and disconnected our battery cable. We were unable to move for the rest of the match and lost a lot of potential points in that way. As one can see in the video, we had collected a lot of blue balls which could have been scored. Also it was impossible to climb the bar at the end of the match. .
[Gust MEES] How did Team Canada react after WHAT happend!??
[Ronny OSWEILER] They apologized for what happened. It was not their intention, as they were allied to us during that match.
Video from LAM-Code Club where one can see exactly WHAT happend, check below please (at approximately 1 min 11):
.
.
.
The preparation before the tournament
[Gust MEES]1) How did it start; did YOU get an invitation to participate?
[Ronny OSWEILER]The teachers at the LAM got offered the project of forming a team to represent Luxembourg by SCRIPT. We only got to know about the project very late, so time was of the essence. We had to gather a group of students within two days. As Annabel is currently studying science of education and is also interested in technology, I asked her to join me in mentoring the team.
[Gust MEES]2) WHEN did YOU start the preparations?
[Annabel SCHOELLEN] The preparations started at the end of march, when we had to gather all necessary information about the students, as well as ensure everyone has got a passport to travel to the United States. Then we had to wait for the robot, which arrived after the Easter holidays. From that moment onward, we started brainstorming on the robot to build, and prototype our ideas.
[Gust MEES]3) WHO were the responsible persons for the “Team Luxembourg”?
[Ronny OSWEILER] The main people that mentored the students while building the robot were Ronny Osweiler (teacher at LAM) , Micael Leal (teacher at LAM) and Annabel Schoellen (student in Science of Education). But the project could only be realized with the organizational help of Christian Boudot and Fabrice Roth, both teachers at LAM, as well as the direction of the LAM.
[Gust MEES]4) From WHICH schools did the students come from?
[Ronny OSWEILER]As the time for the prepartions was very limited, it was not possible to organize a national qualification contest. We took some of our most talented students, as well as some students from other schools. The students were: Laura Märker (LAM), Yannick Martins Dos Santos (LAM), Pit Baum (LAM), Kimon Leners (LAM), Lina Chen (LAM), Atreyam Sharma (École Européenne), Shawn Teusch (LGL). Pit Baum was the captain of the team.
[Gust MEES]5) Did the students travel and participate for FREE, OR did THEY have to pay a participation!?
[Annabel SCHOELLEN] The students had to pay no money for the participation at the project, otherwise I think that this could have been a barrier for potentially brilliant minds. Education and the development of technological and social skills should always be accessible for everyone. This was only possible because of our generous sponsors.
.
[Gust MEES] 6) What was the motto of the team?
.
.
[Ronny OSWEILER] For us, the team was a representation of the diversity of Luxembourg. We had 7 students with 5 different nationalities (Luxembourgish, French, German, Portuguese and Indian) . This was the reason that we took the slogan “A team as diverse as its country“. We wanted to show the other nations in Washington the acceptance and diversity that Luxembourg has to offer.
[Gust MEES] To understand the above, one must know that in Luxembourg the part of the population without Luxembourg nationality is close to 48%.
[Gust MEES] Update (25-07-2017): MarcTEUSCHand Madhumaltiwere supporting during their Washington stay! Marc was present because his son is in “TeamLuxembourg” and I made already an interview with him here:
The team got contacted by the Luxembourgish Embassy in Washington, and even got a visit from the Consul Stan Myck at their booth in the DAR Constitution Hall and by Franz Schilling during the opening ceremony. The team was also invited to visit the Embassy and was welcomed by the H.E. Ambassador Sylvie Lucas, who showed them the whole embassy and gave them historical background information about the presence of Luxembourg in Washington..
Strange things were happening, “Team BURUNDI” disappeared!
After taking part in an international robotics competition in Washington DC, six Burundi teenagers have been reported missing. Two of the students were seen leaving the US for Canada.
A police spokesperson said authorities “do not have any indication of foul play” as the investigation continues into what happened after the group attended the FIRST Global Challenge robotics competition with students from 157 nations.
Four of the teenagers seem to be in a safe place, but police are not reporting any details as yet, according to the Washington Post.
WHAT Luxembourg EDUcation is doing for creativity by using Maker-Spaces in MakerED
.
.
Luxembourg is investing in the future by using ModernEDU with and about ICT, as well based on CREATIVITY, since the launch of <===> Digital Lëtzebuerg<===> Check links below, please (my interviews included):
From the above mentioned NON-PROFIT organizations emerged people WHO NOW are the main leaders in the field of MakerED in Luxembourg 😉

WHAT’S the MOST IMPORTANT in Professional Development-Teacher Training in Modern EDUcation!?
Is it the use of #EdTech (Apps and WHATEVER), technology, WHAT MOST of educators, teachers are advocating on Social-Media twitter and OTHER platforms!??? Certainly NOT!!! WE are living in a world WHERE WE need more than EVER to work together and to forget about the selfish!!! In any company WHERE OUR students, learners need to work THEY will need to have <===> Soft-Skills <===> the ability to work in a team, with collaboration skills, being able to adapt with a multicultural environment…
Let us talk about Soft-Skills, WHAT is it!??? Check below, please:
WHY did I post THIS!? Well, when I see WHAT Educators, Teachers post on Social-Media twitter, sorry, I MUST say that the majority didn’t understand WHAT #ModernEDU is actually!!! :(((
Educators, Teachers DON’T EVEN look on WHAT are the skills needed for the students, learners in a Modern-World working with ICT; THEY look ONLY on WHAT THEY think (really!!!???) about WHAT THEY think is important for THEM to survive to maintain the status quo! :((( Let us have a look WHAT OUR students, learners need for skills in a Modern-World, check the infographic below please.
.
.
Actually MOST Educators, Teachers are nearly NOTHING ELSE as <===> Herd Mentality followers<===> and are following the ones who have chosen THE WRONG path, with a lot (as usual) talk, talk, talk without efficient come out on Social-Media; BUT STILL continuing!!! Since MORE than fifty (50) years it is like THAT (EVEN without Social-Media at that time…), so WHY changing!??? Sounds hard!??? About time THEN to go for serious analyzing and deep-thinking YOUR OWN habits and especially online postings on Social-Media!! It’s about time to get realistic and to accept the reality!! Once the degree, diploma in the pocket and having a secured place in schools, teachers and educators feel like GODS and block anything what THEY think might get THEM away from THEIR control over students, learners and OTHERS with a different mentality! Same ALSO for having contact and listen to advice from industry, working force; which is actually a MUST!! Educators, teachers need to go more for collaboration to ensure that their learners, students will get the appropriate skills and knowledge to survive in an ever quick growing world.
.
.
.
.
Educators, teachers are following online ONLY (like in a herd mentality…) THE ones WHO THEY think give THEM BEST advice about WHAT Modern-EDUcation is: BUT those ones are THE ones WHERE THEIR <===> Professional Development <===> is FAR BEHIND!!THEY even haven’t read the latest books about pedagogy of Modern-EDUcation and are following on a stubborn way and leading to a wrong way!!
Enough criticism and feedback, SO WHAT makes professional educators, teachers?
First of all I would recommend some books which ANY educators, teachers SHOULD read to understand WHAT Modern-Education pedagogy and practice is; please check image below.
.
.
The above mentioned books give YOU a detailed insight and advice about WHAT Modern-Education is and ALSO the How-To, use it!!
How-To Adapt To THAT Mass Of Information On The Internet?
WHAT I have seen on Social-Media is THAT Educators, Teachers are struggling with ALL the mass of information THEY get and DON’T know HOW to deal with it!!! I suggest to use “Curation” and to create YOUR OWN “Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management”, called ALSO #PKM, check below for more information, please:
Actually EDUcation is following more and more Sir Ken ROBINSON about his creativity statements (which are MORE than right BTW!), BUT on Social-Media and in the classrooms it doesn’t really show up yet!! I don’t want to talk too much about it, instead I want THAT YOU to read the following:
And WHAT about Critical-Thinking AND Proactive-Thinking!?
.
In an EVER changing (too quick actually…) world around and with ICT, it is a MUST to have knowledge and developed skills about Critical-Thinking AND Proactive-Thinking! BOTH are required to understand about “Fake News” and Cyber-Security!!
Please check the picture below 😉 NO words needed to write MORE!! Make YOUR choice 😉

Through ICT the Real-World and especially the Virtual-World (both are influencing each other…) are changing quicker then WE can learn about, BUT WE must adapt to it and so must EDUcation! Therefore Universities must do research about the How-To to adapt and teaching about it… Luxembourg, a small country in Europe is doing so in September 2016, read more:
Luxembourg has already a “strategy to promote media literacy” as I got told in an interview, see image below please and click on the image to access the article.

There is ALSO Finland WHO made a radical change to its EDUcation-Sytem, check below please: Finland uses <===> Phenomenon based learning
Meanwhile, before research finishes its studies, WE can already have a look on WHAT is NEW in Technology and WHAT probably would be of interest for EDUcation, as well as NEW Pedagogy Theories and NEW Trends:
Because of the internet and Social Media there is NOW ALSO a new way of learning through collaboration, Global Collaboration, Peer-To-Peer Learning, mentoring, coaching:
WHEN WE talk about “Entrepreneurship“, then WE MUST ALSO talking about “Blockchain and Bitcoin” as THEY are a Game-Changer in the future, check below please:
AND as WE are using ICT: internet with iPad, tablet, smartphones, laptops, PCs, Macs, small computers such as Arduino,Raspberry PI and Co, the “Internet of Things” WE MUST ALSO have basics knowledge of “CyberSecurity“, check below please:
MY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!
.
WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?
Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?
YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉
I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!
I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!
Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!
AND check my profile below as well, at the bottom of this blog post please! 😉

International Collaboration
Tips and tricks that help you with international collaboration. Some bloggers create different blogs, with different languages, as interest of exchange of knowledge. This blog will give you tips and tricks for managing your organization, different time zones and languages, different laws, translations, support for publication, etc..
What you should know:
Some bloggers speaking different languages have a desire to share their knowledge in different languages, why not? This is a commendable initiative that deserves to be supported by a blog offering tips and tricks to manage the transmission of knowledge in different countries and especially in different languages.
Good manners, such as greeting somebody (Hello, Hi…) also and especially on Internet (on Internet it is disappearing almost), saying “Thank you” to somebody and “please” are “keywords” for showing “Respect” to each other.
In my country (Luxembourg in Europe) we even say that those words are the “keys” that open all the doors…
Different authors with different cultures are trying to meet and share their knowledge on a blog tobreak out the distances among themselves.
.
.
It is a bit like visiting another country, you must learn about (will be complemented by links):
Responsibility of sharing!!!Make sure that the shared articles and links are trustful and don’t contain MALWARE!!!
etc..
Why do I mention things that a priori have nothing at all to do with writing (create) blogs, seems weird, right?
In fact, it’s not weird at all, on reflection. As we create blogs, sooner or later we face comments, comments from bloggers, experts indifferent countries of ours, coupled with our mentality and knowing a little information on these countries helps facilitate the conversion and is also beneficial to create friendships. There are no boundaries between humans when they are well informed, when they have open minds, accept different points of view, and mind their own ideas and beliefs.
.
.
Bloggers may face in the first instance (without realizing immediately):
.
.
jet lag
language: there are different expressions as learned in school.Typical expressions of countries and we do not know and / or not well or not at all (??)
the mentality of the people of these countries are other than ours
temperament of different countries, the mentality of the country “called” the “South” is more “warm”, while the mentality of the country, “said” the “North” is “cold”, misunderstood comments may be unavoidable …
different education
the educational hierarchy (my degree is higher than yours [this is also the same in our own country]
a different religion
a different policy, not all countries have democracy …
the living standards of people in these countries
the competitive spirit of a country to another (which one is better?)
the different characters (sympathy, antipathy)
etc..
[MK] Know how to address someone respectfully.
[MK] Know formal introductions in another language.
Tip: in order not to face immediately problems it is to recommend not to publish in collaborative blogs on religion and politics, because everyone has their own vision …
Many factors must be considered when one is dealing with different nationalities!
To give you leads, tips and tricks, we will begin in stages, below (the) first (s) step (s).
.
[MK] Knowing whether or not to speak formally or informally is important. In many countries how you address someone in conversation becomes the stepping stones to building a relationship. It can be off putting to address someone informally from another country. Formal introductions and formal language protocols are important to many cultures and are identifying factors of respect, cultural identity, and the effort of another person entering a new culture.
[MK] Ask questions when learning about another culture. Keying in on areas that help understand cultural norms, expectations, and differences are essential steps in building a foundation that strengthen the ability to collaborate. Thus, increasing, global interactions, collaboration, learning, and partnerships that propel ones Professional Learning Network.
.
Ethics on the internet
On the Internet, we users (those who use the Internet) are both a transmitter and receiver. We use the internet, this service is bi-directional (two way), and exposes us to interventions without borders. As a result we are faced with interpersonal barriers, culture, society, etc..In order not to make missteps it is advisable to apply sincerity, traditional values of honesty, courtesy, politeness, civility, fairness, integrity, confidentiality, which are the foundations of human civilization .
For time zones: theinternet gives us lots of free sources (not always reliable either, download only from reliable sources!) to benefit from tools that make our lives easier.
Why is it important to know about the time zones?
[MK] You want to make sure your blogs and posts on Social Media are read by your visitors, right? You want your blogs and posts on Social Media are also read by your visitors, isn’t it?Then you must also know the time where your visitors are most present on WordPress or other blogging platforms and on Social Media Twitter. This space of time also varies from one country to another, it is advisable to observe for a few weeks, only visiting at different times, these platforms in different countries for you to realize when it is the best time to post a blog (save the blog). [MK] platforms will help you realize when it is the best time to post a blog (save the blog).
.
Only after having surveyed the territory on WordPress, for example, you’ll realize that quite often (you) see a blog post every minute, even several blogs per minute. So there is certainly (not the) time to publish your blog, it will be lost faster than it has been published. We need a period of time when the publication of blogs is not so active so that your blog has a chance of being detected.
Or at home watches turning otherwise as in other countries, or that there are time differences up to 11 (eleven) hours, then it is important to know what time it is in these countries and which countries are visiting other WordPress platforms or other … That is why it is essential to install a free software that provides us with the different time zones. One such reliable tools is free software:
Here below a screenshot from World Time Buddy, very interesting and existing ALSO as an App.
.
.
Translation Tools
It is advisable to bring translation tools, because very few people (those) who arrive suddenly towill write in a different language other than their mother tongue, (will need to to be able to utilize these tools).
On the internet we can find free sources that help us in this task, but these tools are only an aid. They will not be able to translate your texts completely. Many times these translations give us a good laugh, because their translations are poor quality, but it is enough to save you from a lot of work. You take the rough translation and you adjust correctly, there is still work to do, but also savings additional work.
.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of translation software:
About WordPress, it is advisable to contact theScientific foreign co-authors or literary, which speak our language better than you own.It will help you translate your blog.
.
Online Dictionaries
As we write in a language other than our mother tongue it is obvious that we do not find all the words that we need to write our blog (or other document), then at that time a dictionary is welcome .Of course we also find free software on the internet, including below a non-exhaustive list:
.
[MK] Consider this starting from… it is obvious that we do not find all the words that we need to write our blog…
Of course we are not perfect, far from it, especially as regards the grammatical errors and misspellings. On the internet you can also find online tools where you can check your texts, below is a list:
[GM] When WE are sharing articles and especially links WE MUST make sure that WE don’t share MALWARE infected stuff! WE would “infect” OTHERS computer’s (smartphones) with such an action, so be aware, please. WE should learn about the basics of Cyber Security as a GOOD Digital Citizen, which is actually NOT that difficult 😉 Please follow my FREE courses and tutorials below, please:
.
.
Check ALSO the screenshot below, who shows infected and malicious sites.
Almost every country uses different keyboards adapted to their language, they have provisions in different keys. These provisions are key:
.
QWERTY keyboard, used in some Francophone countries (France and Belgium)
QWERTY keyboard designed for English, a language without writing accents
QWERTZ keyboard.
When a Frenchperson/individualwants to write in German, it will not automatically create thespecial characters (ü, ö, ä, ß, etc.). Available on the keyboard, same thing for a German who wants to write in French, will certainly not automatically use special characters (é, è, à, ê, â, etc..).Unless, as in Luxembourg and Switzerland, where their multilingualism / French keyboards “QWERTZ” version Switzerland is used.On these keyboards there are German and French characters available on the keyboard. And then there are also keyboards for Greek languages, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, etc..
It is also possible, in Windows, open the “Character” to select characters that are not present on your computer. To do this (in Windows XP), click “Start” (bottom left of the screen), followed by a click on “All Programs.”Then select “Accessories,” followed by a click on “System Tools.”A shortcut menu appears. Select “Character”.
.
Under Windows7, it’s the same …
.
.
The following screen is displayed.Choose your special character to include in your document.
At the same time you are informed about the name of the special character, and the way how you can integrate it using the “Alt” keys and the numeric keypad.
.
In our example “C CEDILLA” for the name of the special character and pressing the “Alt”key and hold down simultaneously typing the numbers “0231” on the numeric keypad only (located to the right of your keyboard), which gives by releasing the “Alt” letter “ç” key.

The above mentioned quote from “Albert EINSTEIN” SHOULD get to be taught to Educators, Teachers, Instructors! We, as teaching persons should remember that one on any teaching lesson, this as well as in the classroom and especially when WE publish online (website, blog, Twitter posts…).
[GM]: Well, an online friend on Social Media Twitter ===> @ShiftParadigm <=== and ALSO a member of my ===> PLN <=== was introducing Mindy [MK] to his ===> PLN <=== (where I belong to as well) as a NEW Twitter user and asking us ALL to give Mindy a bit help as a newcomer. I did through sharing of my blog posts and curation about Twitter and the contact to Mindy became later stronger and she was willing to learn, she was asking to learn more. A very good initiative which I couldn’t refuse as I love sharing my knowledge with others. So one moment come I was explaining most of what she wanted to know over “DM” (Direct [private] Messages) on Twitter, which was working perfectly… At that moment she wanted ALSO to know more about blogging and I gave her a little help through creating a special blog about the first steps with WordPresshere ===> Creating Your First Blog Post With WordPress <===. That was the beginning, I will let Mindy [MK] explain more and especially her point of view below…
.
[MK]: I came fresh from a training, where I was the only individual from a public school system, the rest were from private/independent schools. The training was about leadership, best teaching practices, pedagogy, and technology. It was nearing the end of day two, when a guest speaker presented about technology. He had a twitter, a blog, a YouTube channel, and many other tools he utilized to reach his students as well as tools for his own professional development. Unfortunately, until then I had not given much thought into using technology as a way to further my professional development. I furiously took notes and made a “to-do” list of mini-goals I wanted to put into action when the conference was over. Later that weekend I created a twitter account. Unsure of what to expect and how it would transform my professional knowledge.Within minutes I had added the few people I knew, then my phone started buzzing with sounds of others following me thanks to @ShiftParadigm ===> the only person I really knew. Others followed me from that first interaction. I was grateful and intrigued. The next hurdle was to create a blog. Where to start? What type of blog? Who will want to read my blog?.. and many other questions ensued. That is where [GM] came in. I had found a source where I could “unload” all the unrelenting questions that I thought about, wondered, and sought advice on. At times meekly asking questions, which transformed into deep conversations sharing thoughts and ideas.
[DK] An online friend ===> @knolinfos Gust MEES and I have been collaborating on several different blog topics; such as our Learn-to-learn: Digital Citizenship blog and our Global Collaboration blog; including @eduinspirations Mindy. K. I was asked if I would want to be a part of this collaboration; in which I jump at the chance!!! The professional developmentandcollaboration I have gained through twitter and blogging with Gust MEES, Mindy K., and Mark W. have given me the inspiration to continue my practice to become the best possible educator and life-long learner that I can be!!! Through participating in twitter chats; such as the #whatisschool chat I have gained a global connectionwith other educators that I never thought possible. It was suggest to me to start a WordPress blog where I could continue my connections with other educators through collaboration!! I have always used edublogs as my “main” website for my students to collaborate with one another. I never thought about starting or creating my own “personal” blog to continue my own learning until I was invite by Gust MEES to collaborate in a global collaboration blog. Through many direct messages through twitter I have become part of great PLN!!! I look forward to the different avenues this blog topic will take me as I continue my growth as professional educator and life-long learner!! Currently, I have the privilege of being a member of my school districts ICT Curriculum Committee. We are rewriting & updating our ICT classes for students 6-8. Find below, please, WHAT skills the learners will need in the future.
.
.
By analyzing WHAT WE are doing through the “Coaching” and “Collaboration“, YOU will realize that WE could cover ALL the abilities and skills needed from the above mentioned. BTW: the above screenshot is from the book of “Howard GARDNER” ===> Five Minds For The Future <===, a book any teacher should read to understand what is needed for the future. It should be considered as required reading!
To have good relationships with the learners (students), especially when going global and very especially when doing this online (as YOU don’t see YOUR learners Face-to-Face) this is very important! A solid base of TRUST needs to get build.
Challenges are a MUST if YOU will motivate learners (students) to GO a step further, find out more below, please. YOU may use “Problem Based Learning” AND “Project Based Learning” (PBL). ALSO, the contact with OTHERS is something very interesting as anyone is different and every time a NEW ===> CHALLENGE <=== for the coach.
Awareness While Working With 21st Century Pedagogy, Tools And Social Media
[GM] In the above mentioned sections WE discussed the possibilities of a modern pedagogy and ALSO WE presented some solutions which of course could get extended by other solutions… BUT, isn’t there something different from traditional learning? YES, WE are using NOW the internet and learning doesn’t happen anymore ONLY in school, in the ===>SchoolCocoon<===! There are NO walls anymore as the internet breaks any borders and walls, the internet is present anywhere as far as there is a possible connection. WE are living NOW in ===> another world <===, a world with two faces, the virtual world and the real world, where the internet (the virtual world) and the real world are influencing each other.
[GM] It isn’t enough anymore to ONLY know the pedagogy and the used 21st Century tools, also known on Twitter as “EdTech Tools“! While using the internet and services, as also tools (programs and Apps), which are connected to the internet, WE MUST accept WHAT is happening in this “virtual world“! This “Digital World” or “Virtual World” is exactly the same as in the “Real World“, there are BAD and GOOD! Actually there are a lot of dangers in the “Virtual World” where a lot of people are NOT aware about it, and there is the responsibility of Education to jump in and teach the learners about WHAT THEY have to be aware and ALSO how to protect as its BEST against: (TIP: read ONLY the text in BOLD to understand)
THE combination of the above mentioned is “THE MASTER KEY” to build UP a modern society through learning (learning to learn) and coaching while using ALSO connected (trough Social Media) global collaboration.
.
Collaboration-Working As A Team (Especially On Global) And Connected Through Social Media
The authors [GM], [MK], [DK] will comment here THEIR experiences through the adventure of global collaboration which THEY experienced.
[GM] My advice (as I am used to it since ages ===> (2002-2003) <===:
Before starting such a BIG project, YES it is a BIG one as YOU are dealing with different mentalities and cultures, is to set up rules up from the beginning to avoid BIG mistakes and not necessary stress for ALL.
This is called ===> Proactive THINKing <=== BETTER to use it as as YOU could come into situations without an issue when NOT doing it and WHO wants that!?
Concerning ===> Proactive THINKing <===: most people don’t know about WHAT it is, I will explain very shortly: deep thinking on what could happen in case of toavoid it up from the beginning. YOU could ALSO say: thinking of the “Worst case” who could happen and preparing to that it would NOT happen. OR, if YOU are smart, usingPsychology for that it will happen (ONLY positive things…)!TIP: read ONLY the bold text to understand it quickly 😉
Check ALSO these links, please, who explain about “International Collaboration”:
Hi Mindy, Dan: I gave You the status “Editor” for this blog post. Please use ONLY this blog post for OUR “Collaboration and Coaching”!!! ====> EDUcation-Collaboration And Coaching | The Future – Private <=== Don’t touch anything else as when YOU are even seeing other things (my blog posts and…). ONLY THIS blog post, thanks!
I will give You some directions through messages marked in “brown“, as this text. WE will communicate this way. You do the same, please: using “brown” text for messages and questions…
If YOU think that something SHOULD get brought in MORE in this “brown” text, feel FREE to do so! BUT, then please use YOUR initials, such as [MK], [DK], thanks.
Once You have read the text, I suggest that You create an “unpublished” (Private mode) post on YOUR account where You copy the “brown” text into and save it for following and reminding 😉 Once done, please let me know and I will delete the “brown” text and save at new this post. So WE will have a good communication and the text will look later OK (when published “Public”) for the readers.
ALSO, so You will have saved a copy of ALL OUR interactions, which could be useful for You and YOUR LEARNers, maybe thinking of as using later that preparation for a new blog post of YOUR OWN on the #HowTo which WE could integrate also in this blog post (ONLY one link…) as part of YOUR OWN experience... It is IMPORTANT to know “THE way” on How To YOU did it for YOUR further “adventures” with OTHERS on collaboration…
At the bottom of this blog post You will see the keywords which WE were talking about: these will help us to NOT lose the line what WE want to do 😉 Feel FREE to add some new when they come out from YOUR brain…
Try first, please, to bring in YOUR insights in the mentioned ===> [MK], [DK], in “brown” text. Later You certainly will have something to suggest, which would be welcome of course. BUT, focus, please first on the mentioned 😉 Otherwise You could lose the topic(s) ===> advice <=== 😉
A good idea might be ALSO to post sometimes Tweets about the #HowTo YOUR learning is advancing (as well as in this post), so OTHERS will get little snippets, step by step, what is happening through a such way WE are doing 😉
The ===> Learning By Doing <=== is something which I have taught since 2002 already and especially with “Collaboration”, the WE is a win-win situation and the “Coaching” (NOT anymore Teaching) is a WINNER!
So, as I am the “ADMINISTRATOR”, I will be able to interact in this blog post and I will adjust some text, ideas and…
===> Please DON’T delete the “brown” text as I will do that when I think that it is necessary as “ADMINISTRATOR”, thanks! <===
One more IMPORTANT thing ===> authors SHOULD wait while seeing “locked” as it means that someone else is in “EDIT” mode ;), see screenshot below, please, thanks 😉
.
.
.
WE are multi-authors on this blog post, so WE MUST take care of each other and being respectful. WHEN YOU see a message similar as above, please DON’T click on “Take over” as that author is actually on “EDIT” mode and doing his work, thanks! Be patient, please… OR, as I did with Mindy: I gave her a friendly “DM” (Direct Message [Private Message]) over Twitter to let her know that I MUST quickly made an additional ADD, which after finishing I will let her know when finished and THEN I go out of “EDITING”, so that she can continue with her “EDITING” again. Thanks for respecting this… And thanks to Mindy to give his “Administrator” the time to do this, appreciated.
===> WE are using the “DM” on Twitter <=== for OUR communication, learn more below:
Very IMPORTANT: DON’T use any code, HTML and similar in the blog!!! If YOU want so, please contact me and WE will discuss about the possibility, anyway I would check the code before!
.
.
===> WE are neither talking about religion and politics, please, as they differ from each ones beliefs, WE respect THEM, BUT WE avoid talking about it to. <===
TIP: WHEN YOU see that someone else is in “EDIT” mode, so prepare YOUR text in a Word document (or similar) during the time that the author is editing. YOU will later ONLY need to make a copy&paste & formatting in “Justify” and YOU will lose NO time 😉
Let’s GO for it 😉
PS: WE will post in “Justify” as You might have found out 😉 I am used to that, so please follow, thanks. ALL my posts are on “Justify”, so WE have to continue like that, thanks.
Just write and format on “Justify” please, I will have a look later on #HowTo get it BETTER presented, don’t worry. Let it GO, let it FLOW… I will look on the rest, give me some TRUST, please, thanks.
======> DON’T worry about how the blog post is looking actually, I will CHANGE later. Some TOPICS need to get placed differently, coming later… First “Let it GO, let it FLOW and later the fine-tuning…
Slowly, but surely WE will go through it 😉 Rome wasn’t build in one day!
.
Visible Learning
The author [MK] was communicating with me [GM] over “DM” (Direct Messages) over Social Media “Twitter“, a bit like a “Chat” where WE exchanged OUR different point of views (mostly common) about collaboration and coaching. [MK] is authorized to use this “private exchange” to create a new blog on her own, where she will add ALSO her notes to document her learning and her insights…
[MK] Establishing roles, responsibilities, and a common language are key. A common language allows everyone to have the same foundation in which to build upon.
[MK] Communicate, Communicate, Communicate ===> TRUE open communication is key. Especially when various levels of experience are at play.
[GM] Remember every time the letter “C” in “ICT“, which means “Communication“.
[MK]Immediate and constant feedback are essential.Feedback helps maintain focus along with eliminating any ambiguity within the group.
[MK] Consider the overall purpose. Is it to educate myself, individuals, other professionals? Let that be your guide to reach the targeted audience. Uncommon language or terms is confusing and will turn your audience OFF.
[GM] Mindy, please report ALSO about taking a break sometimes, very important 😉 Thank You.

The participants (The TEAM)
.
Actually on July, 10th 2014 WE are three persons working together to learn from each other through Social Media Twitter, which WE will document here to give YOU, dear readers and LEARNers, the opportunity to learn ALSO from us.
To make sure that YOU will know WHO wrote WHAT, WE will use the following:
[GM]: Gust MEES (me, the ADMINISTRATOR of this blog post)
More about me: I am a retired “ICTInstructor” since January 1st, 2014. I gave courses to adults, seniors, teachers, elementary classes, as ALSO sometimes personal coaching to youth from the secondary Education. I will try to create a new blog post about my experiences over the years, who could help YOU as well. BUT I am very active on Social Media and I give FREE courses online (a constructive pastime) about EDUcation and Cyber-Security. I was a pioneer in my own country as I started already in 2002 together with my LEARNers what WE are doing here now together.
I am an ===> autodidact <===! And ALSO a ===> LifeLongLEARNing person <=== and this since more than 45 years already, always loved to learn 😉
[GM] This is WHAT my learners (my girls) said about THEIR experiences from my coaching (multilingual: German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Luxembourgish):
ALSO I was an awarded author on “Google Knol” during four (4) years, service who is NOW (since May 1st, 2012) discontinued and on the “Google Grave Yard“. I had about 1.4 Million page views😦 and was author of the week in 2009.
.
.
I was working together with +/- twelve (12) different authors from around the globe, which WE NEVER met before and creating blog posts together. It was a great experience which I loved. Thus meaning, I have a lot of experience through the years which WE will use together in this blog post. More info about me on the bottom of this blog post.
I am online since 1998 and I read a lot of books and mostly magazines. I am multilingual, speaking six languages and understanding eight. I am living in Luxembourg (Europe), a small country with ONLY 537k inhabitants and a population of 44.5 % of foreign nationality (2013). Thus meaning: I am used to live together with different cultures and mentalities, which is a great help when connecting on Social Media with other cultures.
I created ALSO in 2004, that was a global innovation and STILL is, a theater piece about ===> LEARNing the basics of Cyber Security through a Theater piece<===, le “Théâtre Interactiv et Pédagogique” (T.I.P.), check below:
[MK]: More about me: I worked in a variety of settings. I completed my undergraduate degree with an internship at Martin Technology Academy. where I was an Odyssey of The Mind coach as well. My first year of teaching was as Lead Preschool Teacher at Christian County Head Start, before I transferred into the public school system in Clarksville-Montgomery County. Where I taught Special Education K-1 and this year I will be a General Education Kindergarten Teacher. I try to develop my professional learning by doing and experiencing different settings within education. I went to a week-long conference at Vanderbilt where I was 1-24 chosen, making up individuals from 10 different states. I continue to volunteer my time with Clarksville Association for Down Syndrome by helping to raise money, raise awareness, and help bring more of the surrounding community to events hosted by the organization. I am the Morale Committee Chair at my school. The committee and I plan events to help boost morale, plan collaborative events, and to spread well-being throughout the school year. Future goals are to study leadership and education policy to better understand the demands on constraints placed on all individuals working in education and how to make the field better for all.
Greetings from Patrick Henry Middle School! My name is Dan Kirsch. I teach courses in Information/Communications & Technology (ICT) and Career/Technical Education (CTE) for students in grades 6-8. I completed my undergraduate degree in Education from Dakota State University in Madison, SD (USA). My first 3 years of teaching was in a rural public school in Chamberlain, SD (USA). My duties included teaching K-6 Physical Education & 5-8 Middle School Technology classes. The opportunity to attend graduate school to obtain my Master’s Degree led me to South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD (USA) where I obtained my MS in Athletic Administration. During graduate school I obtained a part-time teaching position within the Sioux Falls School District in Sioux Falls, SD (USA). After graduate school I was given a full-time teaching position at Patrick Henry Middle School in the Sioux Falls School District, which is where I currently reside and love every minute of it!!! In the last couple of years, I have gained a ton of knowledge through twitter chats and global collaborations, which as led me to this opportunity to be part of this collaboration blog! I look forward to collaborating and communicating as much information as possible to help PLN and myself as a teacher to continue on the path of Life-Long Learning!
TEAM’s Experience During This Collaboration And Personal Coaching
[MK]:WHAT I learned:
Development of a common language, that enabled OPEN sharing of ideas, experiences, knowledge.
Broadened understanding of concepts students need in the 21 Century to be successful.
Deepened understanding and professional growth, using what I learned and applying it to interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
Building mindfulness of the constant changes in education and adapting to meet the needs of students.
Critical thinking means: Critical self-reflection, self-analysis <== BEFORE taking action
[GM]Apart from the already published experiences from me here, there is one essential point to highlight as well:
THE LEARNing rhythm and the ENERGY of the participants! One size doesn’t fit it ALL! Some have more ENERGY as OTHERS and as a TEAM WE need to adapt ALSO to this as a TEAM! It is IMPORTANT to let know the TEAM when someone is feeling out of ENERGY, which is human and NORMAL! WE ALL have different ways of how OUR life is organized and this shouldn’t get changes, so let the leading person know this and when that person is clever and professional enough, a break of one day will be offered to the WHOLE TEAM. We are humans and NOT robots 😉 BTW: I am HAPPY sometimes to get a day off as well 😉
I know that this isn’t easy to admit, BUT WE MUST do it as:
as otherwise WE could face a BURNOUT and that isn’t good for OUR HEALTH, nor for the LEARners as they would suffer from it as well. I call this ===> Taking care of OUR own PROFESSIONAL HYGIENE <=== Find below, please some helpful articles:
In modern schools there are ALSO parent meetings where the parents get involved, they get noticed about how THEIR kids progress and WHAT about THEY can help for BEST learning of THEM. This is a modern concept of collaboration between the school inside and the outside of the school. It should be a partnership. Here below some articles who explain in detail:
WHAT YOU Should Know Up From The Beginning When Coaching And On Global Collaboration
There is a MUST to establish some rules and guidelines UP from the beginning as WE did in this blog post, or as Mindy [MK] said: Establish a common language.[GM] This common language should be “Respect, Tolerance, Adapting, Empathy, Social behavior…” to avoid mistakes.YOU are dealing with different mentalities and cultures, so avoid BIG mistakes and not necessary stress for ALL.
When coaching:
[MK]Immediate and constant feedback are essential. When possible set up times when feedback is given and timecan be devoted to multiple exchanges to express ideas, questions, and overall thoughts. This helps maintain the integrity and focus, especially when working in different time zones, states, and from various experience backgrounds.

Positive Side Effects / LEARNers Want To LEARN New Languages
Well, I was surprised when coaching and working together with some educators as suddenly I got told that THEY wanted to learn new languages. This after THEY saw my Twitter posts (Tweets) where I had some conversations with other multilingual educators, where WE discussed on the same Twitter thread in Luxembourgish, German, French and English; switching the languages in one second time. This is a valuable occasion, especially as with the internet one finds FREE professional courses, which WE will present here below:
Learning Luxembourgish
Learn Luxembourgish with the online language course developed by the QuattroPole City Network in cooperation with the University of Luxembourg. There are more than 39.000 users subscribed to the course.
BBC Languages – Teach yourself a new spoken language online. American Sign Language Browser – Teach yourself sign language online. Livemocha – Start learning a new language online for free. Learn10 – Gives you a language learning habit that’s hard to kick. 10 new words; everywhere, every day. One Minute Languages – Learn a new language via podcasts that are updated regularly. Mango Languages – Over 100 lessons, shown to you in PowerPoint style with interstitial quizzes, to move you through any language without cracking a book.
