WHAT gifts to buy for the kids for Xmas and Holidays?

Every year the same question, isn’t it!? WHY not thinking about to buy gifts from where and with that the kids will learn? It might be good to have a look on WHAT are the skills required for the future from youth, students, learners and upon that making your choice! Actually (2017) the trends are in the maker scene and coding scene! Engineers, coding people and ICT specialists are needed, the workforce, industry is searching!!

What is the maker scene?

I invite you to read my bog post about it below, please:

Variable Power Supply-work in progressIn the Makerspaces as well as in Maker-EDUcation the creativity and PracTICE are getting fostered to be prepared for what the workforce and the industry are needing! The kids, students, learners are Learning-By-Doing and that is with fun involved also! They are not only tinkering around but they get coached in a “NO Hierarchy” space; in Luxembourg. SO, they can communicate with each other to solve problems and as well later also doing the same through the Social-Media and forums. They learn also by that way to build teams and are able for team-work later once out of school.

.

Team-Work is one of the essential skills which students, learners need to have for the future! Read also my blog post below, please, which explains WHAT the skills for the future are:

Learn more by reading my blog posts from Makerspaces in Luxembourg:

In the above blog posts you will find information what is happening and you can contact the responsible persons for more information; let your kids go there and have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing! 😉

What is the coding scene?

Coding is the 21st Century skill. Coding enhances creativity, teaches young people to cooperate, to work together across physical and geographical boundaries and to communicate in a universal languageTechnology is part of our life, and coding brings it closer to you!

I invite you to read my blog post below, please:

My selection of Electronics books

For ANY projects WE will create there are books and also online documentations which WE will need to learn from and to GET NEW ideas as well. I will propose to YOU a selection of books and links which I have read and learned from as well; links which I use as well to incorporate into my tutorials as ALSO YouTube videos to learn from.

Software, online and/or for download

programmerman-animatedWE are really lucky today because of ICT and the internet to learn about electronics; it was NEVER THAT easy as today!! WE can find simulation software as well as schematics drawing software online and/or for download as for FREE (Open Source and FREEWARE). I remember 49 years ago when I was 12 years old and tinkering around, using curiosity to find out on the How-To things were working by disassembling them, whatever it was… Later, I was working after school (12 1/2 years old starting till 20 years…) around on any place in the village (farmer, café, gardening for private persons, etc.) to earn some money to be able to buy me necessary stuff for my electronics lab…

Nowadays WE GET all the necessary stuff online and WE DON’T need anymore to purchase an oscilloscope and a Multimeter for measuring as one can simulate everything straight on through FREE software. I am feeling HAPPY for that as it allows LEARNERS from any society status to learn about electronics!

Please check below for useful articles on Software:

Check out ALSO, please, my my other blog posts about maker, MakerED, MakerSpaces:

More to come soon, stay tuned 😉

A Holistic View Of WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future

A Holistic View Of WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future?

programmerman-animatedThrough ICT the Real-World and especially the Virtual-World (both are influencing each other…) are changing quicker then WE can learn about, BUT WE must adapt to it and so must EDUcation! Therefore Universities must do research about the How-To to adapt and teaching about it… Luxembourg, a small country in Europe is doing so in September 2016, read more:

Luxembourg has already a “strategy to promote media literacy” as I got told in an interview, see image below please and click on the image to access the article.

.

Digital 4 EDUcation-Luxembourg-2015-2

Click the image please to access the article.

.

There is ALSO Finland WHO made a radical change to its EDUcation-Sytem, check below please: Finland uses <===> Phenomenon based learning

Meanwhile, before research finishes its studies, WE can already have a look on WHAT is NEW in Technology and WHAT probably would be of interest for EDUcation, as well as NEW Pedagogy Theories and NEW Trends:

.

DQ

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

.

.

There will be a focus on Creativity as it was neglected too long in schools.

Because of the internet and Social Media there is NOW ALSO a new way of learning through collaboration, Global Collaboration, Peer-To-Peer Learning, mentoring, coaching:

AND as there is a global change in the way of HOW WE think about EDUcation, there are NOW ALSO <===> #TEACHerPreneurs:

There are ALSO drones and robots which could get easily integrated into Makerspaces and/or labs:

.

Blockchain

Click the image please to access the article.

.

WHEN WE talk about “Entrepreneurship“, then WE MUST ALSO talking about “Blockchain and Bitcoin” as THEY are a Game-Changer in the future, check below please:

AND as WE are using ICT: internet with iPad, tablet, smartphones, laptops, PCs, Macs, small computers such as Arduino, Raspberry PI and Co, the “Internet of Things” WE MUST ALSO have basics knowledge of “CyberSecurity“, check below please:

.

.

WE need ALSO to know about “Privacy“, “Digital Footprint” and “BIG DATA“, check below please:

In Europe, from the EU, there is already a manifesto for ModernEDU (eSkills), check below please:

And shouldn’t WE talk ALSO about “AI”, Artificial Intelligence?

And last but not least Apps. I put Apps on the END of this list as Apps are ONLY facilitators, it is Pedagogy FIRST!

.

With ALL the above mentioned possibilities, how can WE already NOW make a concept of LEARNing?

NO Framing in EDUcationWith ALL the above mentioned possibilities, how can WE already NOW make a concept of LEARNing? Please check my blog post below:

.

What is nearly for sure is THAT most courses will be PracTICE orientated, check my blog posts below, please:

And here WHAT probably will be the future, check below please:

.

Design Principles for Professional Learning

Click the above image please to access the article.

.

How can WE get informed more about!? I advice YOU to read following (multilingual) books and to follow the mentioned persons below:

MUST read books to understand WHAT #ModernEDU is, see PIC below please.

.

MUST READ BOOKS

.

.

.

Framing in EDUcationMY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

.

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

Check out my blog posts:

AND check my profile below as well, at the bottom of this blog post please! 😉

My Published Articles About Cyber-Security In The Press And Social Media

.

Learning basics of IT-Security and Cyber-Security.

My Published Articles About Cyber-Security In The Press And Social Media

programmerman-animatedBeing online since 1998 I realized very quickly that “Every Medal Has Its Reverse” and ALSO what Physic laws tells us “Where is positive there is also negative and both make 100%” (differently explained). OR, in OTHER words, there is BAD and GOOD people! I realized very quickly that through the internet, in the Virtual-World, the BAD guys have BIG chances to make THE BIG money and by reading a lot of PC-Magazines in English, French and German as well by getting informed through the internet. I learned about Cyber-Security and How-To get protected.

Being a diligent learner and always wanting to share my knowledge with others, I started a website about it (later some more in different languages…) , actually the first (private) one and second in general in my country Luxembourg (Europe). At the time people told me that I am crazy to talk about Cyber-Security, NO ONE was realizing about the impact of virus, trojans, backdoors, DDoS, Scam, and other Cyber-Beasts

NOW, WE have to deal with Cyber-Crime, Cyber-EspionageCyber-Attacks, Cyber-War, Cyber-Warfare, Botnets,  Cyber-Hygiene, where OUR computers (Smartphones included…) are part of such BAD actions!!!

SO… Later on (2004), already 13 years ago (in 2017) my FREE courses were available on the server of the “Ministry of Education from Luxembourg” (Europe); the FIRST courses about Cyber-Security and Safer Internet in Luxembourg EDUcation, check screenshot below, please…

.

In 2004 I became ALSO member of the Advisory-Board from CASES (CYBERWORLD AWARENESS &
SECURITY ENHANCEMENT) and from BEE-SECURE. I won ALSO an National Contest, organized by Education, about Cyber-Security with a Mix-Team (one young [12 years old] woman and a 40 years old woman) in 2004 (February 06, 2004).

February 2004

Together with two young students and my temporary assistant Diane, WE won a national contest themed “Multimedia Poster“, please find below the article in German:

15-06-2004:

I participated on a “Journée Pédagogique“, organized by “NorTIC” and “eLuxembourg” (Ministry of EDUcation Luxembourg) on 15-06-2004, where I presented my knowledge and my “BEST PracTICEs” with ICT at that time. I had a BIG success with IT! There were ALSO EDUcators, TEACHers present as visitors from different countries to lurk around WHAT is NEW; such as “Robert GOBERT“, WHO wrote a book and mentioned me in it.

Please click on the images to enlarge them.

There were articles published about me from Luxembourg Newspaper “Luxemburger Wort” on 08.05.2006 and on 04.10.2008, where I don’t have any web address, as NOT existing anymore on their server(s), need to find out…

.

Gust MEES-Tageblatt 13.11.2007

The above article (partial view) was published in Luxembourg on “Tageblatt” on 13.11.2007.

On March 2008 there was a major infection of a very popular website through a “Cross-Site-Scripting” and the press was reporting about it and posting it ALSO on Social-Media. I replied to them on Social-Media and I got interviewed, whereby my interview was published on March 18, 2008 and later in April 02, 2008 an other article from me followed, see links below, please:

.

In February 23, 2006 I was presenting an innovation, a theater piece about Cyber-Security to explain the youth about the dangers of the Virtual-World (the internet). It was a great success, read my blog about it below, please:

Actually (2014) I am very present on Social-Media with nearly 65k posts on Twitter and I am involved in a lot of Twitter-Chats and conversations on Twitter, through them I meat ALSO online friends and one of them, Doug PETERSON contacted me to make an interview which was published on Doug’s Blog on March 12, 2013, check below, please:

Introduction to Teaching in 21st Century

gears iconTeaching in 21st Century is becoming a challenge actually for teaching-people, not everybody has the knowledge about new teaching-technologies (Tools…) and new teaching-education, especially not teaching persons with a certain age, so let us try in this knol to propose on HowTo this could get “learned” and also on HowTo the teaching-people could work “together” with their learners (students) with 21st Century knowledge

.
A very BIG change for teaching-people. They have now also to go away from teaching the old way, it is not anymore the teaching person who is the “BOSS” in the classroom, there is no “BOSS” anymore. Teaching people and learners will work “Together” on a “win-win situation“, like two gears (as shown in the “icon”  up the text here) to make the learning process go forward… Teaching-people should also forward to their learners Learning to Learn.
.

Don’t forget also the social aspects of your learners, very important!!! Please have a look here and think about it: Luxembourg students are reaching burnout. [GM]: Luxembourg (my country) does a lot for such situations, check out to learn more CPOS.
.
The author has given courses himself since eight (8) years (2010) based on Howard GARDNER‘s andDaniel GOLEMAN‘s  knowledge to seniors, adults and also youth and classrooms from K-3 to K-12 and he had a very positive feedback from teachers (K-3 to K-12) and the other learnersLearning who makes fun when well organizedThe teaching person needs to make a good preparation and he needs to know the possible tools and the habits of digital age nativesAnd taught than the learner gets interested and learns more and better, a big progress.
.
.

Are You On The Path To 1:1???

sharing iconStudents should get prepared for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship by offering a challenging, relevant curriculum and varied activities in a safe environment. In his book Education NationMilton Chen calls 1:1 access “the digital civil right of every student to participate in his or her own education.”  I could not agree more and if we truly care about our students, then we will toss aside our anxiety and remember our primary role as educators to prepare our students for what they will face when they leave our schools. Since the world outside our doors is changing at a faster rate than any time in history, we should be seeing some shifts within our walls as well.

What You Should Know About Web 2.0, 21st Century Responsibility for Teachers and Social Learning…

“Kids between the ages of 8 and 18 spend 11.5 hours a day using technology — whether that’s computers, television, mobile phones, or video games – and usually more than one at a time. That’s a big chunk of their 15 or 16 waking hours.”

Peer-To-Peer-Learning

The teaching person needs to have a good knowledge about possible 21st Century tools to well prepare his courses to make them interesting for his learners… Not ONLY preparing the learners for getting a diploma, but preparing them to be able to have competences!!!

“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”

(Seneca the Younger)

“Knowledge is easy (in some way [copy&paste]) to forward. Forwarding competences needs that the teaching person has also competences”. (Gust MEES)

Teachers and learners are like two gears who are making the learning process going forward (Gust MEES)

What is New In 21st Century Teaching And Learning???

thumbsupnathaneady01It is not anymore the teacher (teacher, professor, educator, instructor, coach…) who is the most important person. The person who teaches (teacher, professor, instructor…) will act as a coach. Thus meaning: it is not the teaching person who is the most important, but the learner. The teaching person observes the learner (that is what we learned anyway as we followed pedagogical courses), the expression of his body while the learner is working on his project, the teaching person observes also what the learner says and also the rhythm of his voice, this gives us a feedback on how well the learner is doing and than the teaching person guides the learner.
A project, which ever one in ICT  should get made by “learning by doing“. Learners should get encouraged to make faults, unusual but the best way to learn… Remember: when we were kids we need also to learn to walk. We were falling a lot of times and that hurts. So we remembered it, the same for courses “learning by doing“, making faults and mistakes will get remembered by the brain not to do anymore so… The learning process goes further…
.

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.” (Seneca the Younger)

“I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.” – Socrates

The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a teacher.

Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) American author, editor and printer.

“Learning To Learn” is a teaching person’s main task, coaching the learner to achieve this task. Gust MEES [I said this already when I was 12 years old and now I am 56 and I din’t make me friends with that. Now I will try to push that again trough Internet…]

 .
The teaching person is serving the learner, and will act as a coach, a trustful and respectable person, sometimes even as a friend. The learner will become only that good as the teacher does well his job 😉 A big change isn’t it??? It is not anymore the teacher who is on a HIGH position and the learner on a LOW position, but it is both on a non hierarchical position, a win-win situation… There shouldn’t be neither time restrictions, learning needs time and persons learn differently…Teaching people need also a lot of patience and lots of energy to do so. For teachers, coaches, educators, professors: this needs some months practice (till about a year) till you find your own appropriate way (your own “style”), but it is worth to do it…
 .
The efforts you brought in you will get them 10 times back, teaching and learning makes fun now for learners and teaching stuffless stress on both sides and a positive feedback for the teaching people…
.
When teaching (giving courses to) ten (10) people by a normal way, you normally get out only 30% of the learners who understood really about what you tried to make understand them, when you are a good teacher maybe 40%. When using the way I did, you will come out to about 90%-95%, a big progress…
.

 .
A win-win situation between course instructor (coach) and learners which brings out a maximum to the learner, the most important…

How Could That Be In Practice???

help-books-aj.svgajash01-1
First of all I recommend you to read some books to understand, I recommend books fromHoward GARDNER and Daniel GOLEMAN, see also my book selection on the end of this knol:
.
.
  • 5 Minds For The Future (Howard GARDNER) to understand what the world needs for abilities fom students in 21st Century…
.
  • The Disciplinary Mind: the mastery of major schools of thought, including science, mathematics, and history, and of at least one professional craft.
  • The Synthesizing Mind: the ability to integrate ideas from different disciplines or spheres into a coherent whole and to communicate that integration to others.
  • The Creating Mind: the capacity to uncover and clarify new problems, questions and phenomena.
  • The Respectful Mind: awareness of and appreciation for differences among human beings and human groups.
  • The Ethical Mind: fulfillment of one’s responsibilities as a worker and as a citizen.
 .
No practice could be done good without a good base of theory, but when having followed some pedagogical courses about new ways of education you could easily try the following suggestions:
.

As mentioned already above, it is the learner (student) who is the most important and not every learner is learning on the same way, we as human are all different and so we are also learning, differently… There are people they are learning better on “visual effects”, as others may like more “auditive” messages, people who prefer learning without noise at all around as also people who need a music-background to learn best (as I do…), people who prefer to be alone to learn as also people they like to learn and to work together in a team…

.

.

You should also read these articles:

.
.

.
Working in a team is needed for 21st Century, the Power of different knowledge merged to one only knowledge to resolve the problems of this world… Thus also meaning that children and adults need to get educated to “cross-border-thinking“, as Internet allows a 24/24 hours connexion to the whole world and that people from different nationalities can work together without any problems, even when not understanding the same language, translation tools make this possible…
.
Life Long Learning made easy and for FREE!
And that is what the new generation of Internet tools, the “Cloud” is providing, e.g. Google docs, where it is possible to work as a team on the same document and where the team could be spread around the world because the document is accessible online…
.
.
.
One is for sure, the Internet could help a lot for using all these possibilities to get the maximum out for every learner, let us use it… One new project for 21st Century Learning and Teaching is the “Papillon Project“, who will get discussed more here below…

Students to make curious again in lessons is mission of innovative content concepts to reduce the rate of school failure. Papillon is such a solution concept. By linking real and virtual learning environments Internet becomes the classroom.

And as Internet is the classroom the learners can access it anytime they want, thus meaning: if the teaching-person makes his courses interesting for the learners those will even access the “classroom” without that the teaching-person needs to tell them to do, learners will have a look anyway because they will find course material which is interesting for them, a success…
 papillongrafik1-Infographic
.
Papillon-Method: The architecture of the concept is based on narration and interaction. The hybrid system combines the advantages of static and dynamic representation of contents and is a merging of imagination and scientific facts and allows a 3-dimensional view on the recommended topical focus.
 .
The Papillon method offers a real and an imaginary level.
.
  • First, the real world of knowledge.
  • Second, a fictional world of characters and stories, which  reader has to explore.
 .
Concept of Papillon

 .

Survey from Berlin Technical University

“[…]Papillon is worthy of praise in the area of media pedagogy (enhancement of the instruction through materials) both from the perspective of what is urgently needed for the future (Internet competence) and the psychology of learning (motivation/interest and orientation toward action) and a very promising project is worthy of support“

Engaging and Motivating Students…

community-jpeg

Engaging and motivating students: this is the most important part of your teaching career, it is the first touch with your students who is the most important (which ever age they have…), this gives them the “first impression of you”…

 .
When introducing yourself, don’t make ONLY an traditional introducing, but tell your students that they are the most important in your courses and not you!!! Tell them also that you let them work alone and/or in groups (but respecting some order in the classroom, order which you define on the beginning in a friendly speaking way…) and that after having taught them what to do that you will be present but leaving them alone and watching how they do and if necessary when needed you will be present to help out. Be their guide, their coach, be only there when needed!!! In this moment show that you have competences, not only your diploma, your degree!!!
 .
Sometimes. while walking through the rows of the tables in the classroom you may remark that there are problems (you will feel that because of your pedagogical education…), so this is the moment to ask your students if they would like your help… In this moment don’t ONLY show the solution (your help…) to that part of students, but switch on the “beamer” and show it to ALL of the students, some may not have shown that they didn’t understood it…
When they have questions which you can’t answer at the moment, write those questions down somewhere where they can see it also and tell them that for the next course and/or they will get the answer(s) by email or on the collaborative platform of the school (university)… Nobody is perfect, you would be the first one 😉 Build also a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) database where every body could have access, so you will be prepared for the same answer by other students…

.
[GM]: The Quality of any done work is dependent on the Quality of the used “tools” and the ability to use them…

Doing it this way your learners will appreciate and respect you, because you are showing to them that you have competences, competences which you can share with them, don’t hide your personality behind your diploma and degree, show them who you are. Show them that you are competent to give them courses 😉

Keywords: competences, 21st cetury knowledge, coach, ability to give courses, respect, pedagogical background, ability to adapt on any situation…

What Are The Tools I Can Use???

Personally I can recommend DOKEOS as I worked for two years with it and that it was for my needs the best one of the above mentioned… See below a screenshot of its structure…

It is thoroughly redesigned and adapted to the recent evolution of technologies and their uses: mindmapping integration in learning processes, scenario tools for training modules, management of social networks for a collaborative learning, touchscreen interface adapted for mobile media (smartphones, tablets, iPad …).
.
 Dokeos
.
While working with LMS (Learning Management System) don’t forget the aspect of security, thus meaning: when new updates for those LMS are available (you get notified by email and/or over the platform itself) youneed to update immediately otherwise your learning platform could be vulnerable and you could infect your learners and visitors with malware. Chose a person who has the necessary skills to do it and that person will than be the administrator of the learning platform…

Using MindMaps makes it much more easy to visualize a project, by seeing the MindMap most people understand directly what the target is and also what the different tasks are…
Practical Tip: print out the MindMap and strikeout all done tasks, this makes it more easy to have an overview of still to do tasks and/or change the MindMap on your computer with strikeout (strikeout) and foreseen date and print it out again…

Mobile barcodes, storing addresses and URLs, are a new and innovative way to access the mobile internet where users can use the camera on their mobile phone to scan barcodes that may appear in magazines, newspapers, billboards, LCD/plasma screens, packaging, business card and even t-shirts. A user having a mobile camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the 2D barcode causing the phone browser to launch and direct to the programmed URL. Codes can be used to provide fast-track access to mobile websites, special discount offers, send an SMS, and receive a ring-tone, save contact details on mobile address book.

Education, if well managed can do a lot for a better world. [GM]: My Personal Advice…

sharing icon

By introducing the learners to the same tools which the teaching-person uses they will feelmotivated as the teaching person shares his secrets with them and they will learn what are the best tools and also how to use them and this done as a Team-Work will be best for the education process…

Tip: this applies to any age… teaching persons needs only to tell them that he (she) shares his secrets with them to create (produce) good and excellent stuff 😉 Motivate your learners, make them feel equal (win-win situation) with the teaching person and you will see the progress…
.
All those presented “tools” should not only be used alone by the teaching-person, but also shown to the learners and trying together with them to realize different projects with those “tools”…

Tell me and I will forget, Show me and I will remember, let me try and I will understand. (Confucius)
