Analog-Digital Clock using Arduino NANO + RTC DS3231 + 0.96 inch 128X64 I2C OLED

WE were playing around already with <===> Temperature & Humidity monitor using Arduino NANO + DHT22 + 0.96 inch 128X64 I2C OLED <===> https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2019/08/26/first-steps-with-the-arduino-uno-and-nano-maker-makered-makerspaces-coding-temperature-humidity-monitor-using-arduino-nano-dht22-0-96-inch-128×64-i2c-oled/ <===> which displays the temperature in °F AND °C, as well as it displays the “Heat Index“.

This time WE will create a “Analog-Digital Clock” using the RTC DS3231 + 0.96 inch 128X64 I2C OLED. It’s quite easy to realize: only a few connections for the wiring and a Copy&Paste of an existing Sketch (Code)..

.

.

The Code

It’s very easy, just Copy&Paste the Sketch (Code) from below address.

Please check the link below:

You might need to add certain libraries, see below please which ones will GET needed, please.

First steps with the Arduino UNO, NANO | Displaying Time, Date, Temperature and Humidity on a LCD2004 Display | Maker, MakerED, Maker Spaces, Coding

.

Displaying Time, Date, Temperature and Humidity on a LCD2004 Display

We were already playing around with a LCD2004 display in a previous tutorial where we displayed the temperature and the humidity <===> First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 and NANO | Maker, MakerED, Coding | I2C LCD Temp./Humidity displaying, now we will add as well Time and Date with a DS3231 module.

We will use the tutorial from <===> Arduino datalogger with SD card, DS3231 and DHT22 sensor, where we will NOT use the datalogger for our project to make it as easy as possible; courageous ones, once the project is working for them, may add the datalogger 😉 In that tutorial you will find also the code…

Please check video tutorial below:

.

.

Check also the blog below, please:

.

Check the schematic above please to know how to wire it; first we will do it on a breadboard and later we could solder it… Do the wiring as shown, without the Datalogger-SDCard-Module. See PIC below, please.

.

.

In the above image you will see an DHT11 Sensor (blue case) as at the time I didn’t have it yet (was ordered…) a DHT22 Sensor (white case) as shown on the finished project. As the project works we can now solder everything together on a strip-board, choosing a case; I used a cardboard box with the dimensions of 140 mm X 130 mm X 60 mmm, fixing the LCD2004 and the DHT22-Sensor on the front of the cardboard box.

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 and NANO | Maker, MakerED, Coding | RFID RC522 Tag-Card Reader with LCD1602-I2C

RFID-RC522-LCD1602-I2C

.

RFID RC522 Tag-Card Reader with LCD1602-I2C

We were already playing around with LCD’s in our previous tutorial <===> First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project | LCD and Sensors Project <===> but there we used the SPI-Bus, meaning: connecting 12 wires (Potentiometer connections included…)!! With the I2C Bus we need ONLY to connect 4 wires!!

Check PICs below please to see the difference:

SPI Bus connections

LCD1602-Wiring with Arduino

.

I2C Bus connections on Arduino UNO

.

I2C LCD1602 PINOUT on Arduino UNO

.

I2C Bus connections on Arduino NANO

.

I2C LCD1602 PINOUT-Arduino NANO

.

SO, as you can see there is a BIG difference in cabling 😉 Especially beginners in Coding would appreciate this I2C version with ONLY 4 wires!

Learn more:

.

Check this video tutorial which explains very well about I2C:

.

.

Let us NOW first watch the video tutorial to see about WHAT this tutorial is…

.

.

The video and the code description in the Sketch are in Portuguese, BUT DON’T worry, I will give you later some screenshots with English text which you will need to change in the code; there are anyway some lines of code to add (change…) to make it working correctly! But let us FIRST have a look on the PINOUT of the RFID RC522 to see WHAT we have to connect.

.

RFID-RC522-PINOUT

.

So, let us now connect the RFID-RC522 to the Arduino UNO or the Arduino NANO, I used a Arduino NANO and its working perfectly! Check the translated (Google translate) wiring instructions.

.

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01Make sure to connect the RFID-RC522 to 3,3 Volts and NOT to 5 Volts, you will fry the device otherwise!!

.

.

Connections-RFID-ARDUINO

Click PIC , please, to enlarge.

.

As we can see from the bove there are 7 wires to connect from 8 possible connections on the RFIF RC522 device; the “interrupt pin (IRQ)” isn’t needed! SO, lets connect these pins to the Arduino UNO, or as I did to the Arduino NANO; it works on both! Next step is to connect the LCD1602 I2C to the Arduino, it’s pretty simple, check below please. ONLY 4 wires!

.

LCD-I2C-PINOUT-ARDUINO

.

The wiring done, NOW we can download the code (Sketch) and upload it to our Arduino UNO, or NANO through the Arduino IDE, please find the download link below:

Once uploaded (compiling) the code there could be some errors happening, it happens to me… please check PIC below:

ERROR-1

.

Well I made some searches on the internet and I found the right answer on a forum about this error, which sais that one should scan the I2C Address of the device and replace the “lcd.init();” by “lcd.begin (0x3F,16,2);” whereby “0x3F” is the I2C Address of my LCD1602/I2C module. I scanned to find out the I2C Addess with this sketch, please check here:

I bought 3 from Amazon (Germany) delivered from “AZ Delivery” <===>  https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B079T1BW6T  <===> and they should have had ALL the I2C-Address “0X27” as explained in their FREE eBook <===>  https://bibliothek.az-delivery.de/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/11-AZ-Delivery_16x2LCD-I2C-Display-Bundle_Startertutorial.pdf   <===> but ONLY 1 had this address and two others the I2C-Address “0X3F”!! BTW: AZ Delivery has very GOOD stuff for reasonable prices!

Here below the results of the scan of the I2C-Address, shown in the Serial-Monitor of the Arduino IDE:.

I2C-ADDRESS-SCAN

.

I2C-ADDRESS-SCAN-2

.

SO, make sure to FIRST scan the I2C-Address through the above mentioned Sketch, will save you a lot of stress! 😉

TIP: Use a DYMO, print out the I2C-Addresses and glue them on the backside of the LCD1602 Display, so you know for next projects WHAT I2C-Address the module has! 😉 In a couple of weeks you wouldn’t remind it anymore!

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | 24×8 LED MATRIX | Rolling Animated Eyes

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | 24×8 LED MATRIX | Rolling Animated Eyes

.

EMO-Rolling Eyes

.

Rolling Animated Eyes

Since very long I was looking for the How-To of “Rolling Eyes” on a LED-Matrix for one of my projects with Arduino. I found it through my searches on Google on a tutorial using Raspberry PI from “SunFounder”; a tutorial which shows as well the use with an Arduino UNO. So I had a look on Amazon…

Where to buy:

.

How To use the EMO 24×8 LED DOT MATRIX MODULE with the Arduino

The steps are pretty easy:

Step 1. Download the library

Download the library SunFounder_EmoZIP.jpg

Step 2. Install the library

Open the Arduino software, and select Sketch -> Include Library ->Add .ZIP Library.

Step 3. Open the example

Go to File -> Examples -> Sunfounder Emo -> emo_animate

Well, as I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, I recommend to you to follow the complete tutorial with screenshots and code explanation below, please:

Link:

For the wiring, check below, please.

.

EMO-Arduino wiring

Click the image, please, to enlarge

.

Concerning the code: IF you want just to have the rolling eyes, you need to modify a bit the Sketch (code), BUT it ISN’T difficult at all, JUST to bring in some “//” in some parts of the code. It’s called <===> uncommenting <===> which means THAT that part of code isn’t executed by the microcontroller (Arduino)! THE code as it shows, apart from the rolling eyes, ALSO a PACMAN… Well, YOU decide to keep the code complete and/or ONLY the “Rolling Eyes”… Please check the PICs below.

.

Original Code EMO Animate

.

In the above PIC you see the part of the ORIGINAL code which is interesting for us.

.

Modified Code EMO Animate

.

In the above PIC we see changes made in the red boxes. We just uncomment several lines by putting a ” // ” in front of the lines of code. The ” // ” is twice a ” / “.

BEST way would be to load and try the original code on the Arduino UNO to find out how it works and later to change the code as shown above.

Have fun by your Learning-By-Doing and stay tuned for next blog posts 😉

You can see the code in action in the video below.

ELEGOO SMART ROBOT CAR KIT V3.0

.

First impressions

Elegoo Smart Robot Car Kit for Arduino.

.

The Kit is delivered in a well organized plastic box with a poster inside of all the parts with description and a CD with the PDF Manual, Code and Libraries.

The manual in PDF format is actually very well documented an nobody should have problems to follow the instructions.

There are even the necessary tools for assembling provided, such as different screwdrivers.

Assembling and cabling

Assembling part 1.

.

.

.

First steps, assembling… Actually it isn’t that difficult, only problem encountered are 2mm screws and nuts, I will continue tomorrow with a magnifying glass and more light to handle it (OH my eyes…). There was some fight with screws and nuts ranging from 1.6mm (Ultrasonic Sensor) to 2mm (Servo fixing) where I needed to use special tools, was a bit stressing to work with such tiny things.

.

.

.

.

ToolsFor solving the problems encountered with the tiny screws and nuts, I used a “magnetic telescope” for the 1.6 mm nuts and a “spring-loaded tongs” for the 3 mm nuts.

The cabling was very easy and the rest of the assembling as well as it is VERY well described in the Assembling document (in PDF). Next step is to control (End-Control) again the cabling to make sure that everything is correctly connected and THEN the Coding

The documentation is available in different languages…

Charger with US plugWhen living in Europe, make sure to make your order on the national platform from Amazon, I made my order in the US and I got the charger delivered with an US plug! Amazon Germany delivers it with an “Euro Plug”! <===>

I made the End Control, checking if the connections were made right, it was.

.

Assembling part 2

.

Assembling the two black plates and the wheels was easy peasy as well…

The Coding

Manual on CD

Click the image, please, to enlarge.

Opening the Manual NOW to proceed for the first lesson “Make the car move on [Auto-GO]”. Very easy to follow, it worked in less than 5 minutes. Unplugging the USB cable from the laptop, will it work!?

Taking the car away from the desk and putting it on the floor, switching the Power-supply on and it runs around by avoiding any obstacles while they are detected by the “Ultrasonic Sensor”, it’s FUN watching <===> Success Trying out NEXT lesson now…

The courses are made very easy: plug the USB cable to the computer, open the course in the Arduino IDE, upload it into the IDE, save it in your folder, unplug the USB cable, take the car away from the desk and put it on the floor, switch it on and enjoying…

Well, that’s a Kit which everybody can try and have success, give it a try and enjoy “Coding”, “Maker” activities…

Science Festival 2017 in Luxembourg (Europe)

SCIENCE-FESTIVAL-LUXEMBOURG 2017

Science Festival 2017 in Luxembourg (Europe)

Makermag1-July 2017.

.

It is the first time that I visited the “Science Festival” in Luxembourg-City, although it is already on its 11th Edition. The first edition was run when Luxembourg-City was Europe’s cultural capital in 1995. This year there was a BIG press coverage and advertising about it so that I decided to go visiting it! I didn’t regret it and I will visit it again, hopefully next year it will not rain again!

.

.

.

WHAT is it about!?

(Start Text from http://chronicle.lu/category/things-to-see-do/biggest-science-festival-returns-to-luxembourg-next-week-with-50-workshops) Organised by the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) and the National Research Fund (FNR), the purpose of the annual Science Festival is to present and promote science and research in Luxembourg and to encourage young people and the public to become interested in, experiment with and discuss science and technology. (End text…)

Luxembourg needs more people in Science, ICT, Research and through such festivals it tries to use the curiosity of youth to make them sensible to maybe direct them to study in these fields. It was a BIG success as far as I can say, last year they had about 12.000 visitors and more expected for this year. I saw a lot of youth sitting in the different ateliers, workshops to tinker around with lot of interest and motivation. I got told that there were even some kids visiting the place for the second day (Saturday and Sunday, it was open for the public) together with their father and that they spent about four (4) hours, that’s what I call passion! Looks like that there will be some future scientist growing!
