WHAT 2019 taught me! The hard truth!!

mediocrity-reward-nice-talking

Well, there is a LOT to say about on the How-To about people understand the handling with the internet, Smartphones, especially from EDUcation, but ALSO about people from different ages and nationalities in my country Luxembourg as also online, as well as the behavior of persons which is increasingly becoming aggressive and unsocial! Generally said: There is a brutalization of society (Verrohung der Gesellschaft), manners aren’t nearly existing anymore, social behavior WHAT is it? THE EGO is dominating!!! People DON’T listen anymore, they are responding straight with an EGO-Message NOT related to the discussion ===> vom Thema abkommen (DE), NOT following the TOPIC (EN)!! There is generally a lack of QUALITY anywhere!!

Concerning EDUcation online on Social-Media twitter:

Chat icon

WHEN one follows Twitter-Chats: Chats existing > 5 years are STILL ONLY related to EDUTech, the tools and NOT related to Modern-Pedagogy, Modern-LEARNing, a stubborn manner to stay on Status Quo!!! WHEN will THE necessary CHANGE come?!!! THAT’S a RED-CARD (Arschkarte) from me to EDUcators, TEACHers!!!

Please read my blog post:

Concerning social behavior:

Bus-Stop Time-Tables

Bus-Stop Time-Tables

Unlucky wise I have a Bus-Stop +/- 10 cm in front of the house entrance with 2 and sometimes 3 different directions which means a HUGE traffic, noise and unsocial behavior. On the Bus-Stop there are rotating (mechanical) timetables, BUT a LOT of people aren’t able to use it and turn around themselves around the timetables (???) and walking inside my entrance of the house, which is private territory!!! ALSO they come in to the entrance and walk around, shouting in their smartphones and make a LOT of noise. NO respect, BUT they DON’T care about it!!! I installed an Alarm System to GET people away from it, LOTS don’t even care about it and when I go outside and explain that they are on private territory and that the Bus-Stop is outside my entrance they start to insult me, getting aggressive, some even wanted to give me a fight…

WE even had two times +/- 50 people in the entrance of the house and also in the garage entrance and wife was fearing as they didn’t move away after being told to leave the place; THEY became aggressive and rude!!!

.

.

In 2019 WE had +/- 200 alarms (siren noise…) which were provocatively made by teens for their fun by streaming videos about THEIR challenges to annoy the inhabitants of the house!!! These are no longer pranks and up from next year (2020) they will get reported to the local police!!! Enough is enough…

People think that WHATEVER THEY do is allowed as IF THEY were at home, which for sure ISN’T, looks like a turn to anarchy. Even elder persons (45-75 years old) are following this strange behavior, WHERE is or WHAT is Social in 2019?!!! A forgotten behavior, the comfort and the EGO took it over!!! Respect is a behavior which persons, whatever age, have forgotten!!!

Up from march 2020 transports (Bus, Tram and train) will be FREE in Luxembourg (as first country in the world) and wife and myself are already fearing WHAT will happen THEN!!! Hopefully NOT MORE asocial behavior in front of the house… Same situation for the increasing number in cyclists, they are driving on the side-walks, mostly in opposite direction as the traffic and I nearly got hit by them while walking on the side-walk! Even that there were 2 cyclists (male in the 30s-40s) were making “Freestyle Cycling” by running with +/- 40-50 Km/h over our entrance of the house, teen skaters used the entrance of the house for their training, teens are doing Parkour on the walls around and in the entrance of the house…

People take more freedom than the law allows!!!

Bus-Stop-Time Tables QR-Code

Bus-Stop-Time Tables QR-Code

Concerning the use of Smartphones: nearly everyone has one, BUT they are not able to use it on the right way! Any time-tables in Luxembourg are accessible by an App and also by scanning the QR-Code which is printed on the time-tables. I have NEVER seen in 2 years ONE person who was using it in front of my house where the Bus-Stop is 10 cm in front. FYI: by turning around the time-tables that makes a LOT of mechanical noise as NOT greased and by hearing that noise more than hundred of times per day ====> GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Two different projects will become ONE project for Xmas

Well, in previous tutorials <===> https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2019/11/03/first-steps-with-the-arduino-uno-maker-makered-makerspaces-coding-make-objects-rotating-with-a-stepper-motor/ <===> and in <===>  https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2018/04/08/first-steps-with-the-arduino-uno-r3-maker-makered-coding-scrolling-text-with-8×8-led-matrix/     <===> we learned about the how-to to make objects rotating as well as to display a scrolling text on a LED Matrix. NOW, we will combine those two for a nice Xmas decoration.

When fixing a small object there isn’t any problem, you just drill a hole of the diameter of the axis of the Stepper-Motor and fix it with hot glue or instant glue. BUT, when it comes to make rotating larger objects it will become unstable!! We need then also a larger support plate to fix the object. I used two techniques, one with a copper-plate of 0.8 mm (was still in my cellar for 30 years…) and/or a single-sided copper-Epoxy plate. Copper-plates are expensive and single-sided copper-Epoxy plates are on a less expensive price. They are about 0.65-1€/piece on Amazon.

For our Xmas project we will use a plastic star with LEDs which will get fixed the following way, check below please.

SO, you are a retired EDUcator, TEACHer, Instructor, LEHRENDER: WHAT to do NOW?!!

programmerman-animatedWell, that was the question I was asking myself when I became retired in 2014. As I did innovation in Modern-EDUcation in my country Luxembourg, there was NO WAY to give that up, BTW! SO, years before my retirement I was already present on Social-Media Twitter (2009), Facebook, and I did Curation (2011), as I was blogging (2010-2011) ALSO, actually very successful with > 197K (197.132) views (November 2019).

Giving up something which was already well known worldwide, was NO OPTION! Well, please check below HOW YOU can stay informed and trying to help others as well; remember: you are NOT anymore in the “School-Cocoon” and MORE FREE to say WHAT YOU want!! YOU DON’T have to go to “stupid” meetings anymore which are time-killing and mostly useless!!!

Check ALSO please:

A BIG difference, use it, please to make a CHANGE!! Others will listen and maybe follow your advice for a BETTER EDUcation, a Modern-EDUcation! Advice: Please check below to follow and to stay Up-To-Date!

AND, why not starting with tinkering and coding, being part of the Maker-Community and trying it out to be able to share it with your community in the MakerED, Maker-Spaces? You have time NOW, use it, please for the benefit of the LEARNERS! Check below please:

NEW Words, Trends to Know and to LEARN about in 21st Century

programmerman2Are YOU feeling overwhelmed with strange words, NEW trends, when you are reading and following posts, tweets, articles about/and in Social Media!? Well, I can understand YOU!!! There are SO MUCH, if I wouldn’t do curation, I wouldn’t understand it anymore as well, to be honest! 😉 Through my daily curation I see it and I read those articles, from WHERE I learn a lot as an autodidact. WHEN there are some words which I DON’T understand I am going MOSTLY to Wikipedia to find its explication and if NOT sufficient, I use GOOGLE and other online resources to know MORE about it!

For ME it’s THE BEST way (Curation) to learn and to stay up-to-date with my Professional Development! I tried out a lot of different ways after being online since 1998 and believe me, please, it’s the fastes way to keep it UP! 😉 Through Curation I build up my <===> PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management from where I can use it in ANY of my blogs, twitter posts and other Social Media to share it to people willing to learn.

Let us FIRST have a look about WHAT Curation and PKM is (first stuff to read and bring into PracTICE) before WE continue with THE strange words and trends later:

SO, let’s have a look on some (actually a lot…) NEW words and trends in EDUcation and WHO will influence EDUcation below, as THEY are actually running in Real-World, let us START first with the words:

Check also, please:

P.S.: The present words with NOT YET a link will get updated later, otherwise I wouldn’t finish this blog post! 😉

Dynamic Learning

Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With digital tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamicThis concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.

Through Curation, Social Media twitter and by building a PLN this is perfectly possible!

BTW : Did YOU actually realize that NOW it’s the PracTICE WHICH is dominating the Real-World before it EVEN is taught by EDUcation, a BIG CHANGE, isn’t it!!! Because of Entrepreneurship (bold actions…) the internet helped to CHANGE the world and flipped EDUcation to bring it MORE close to the needs of the workforce/Industry!!!

The NEW Pedagogy is MORE about the learners, students and to put THEM into the drivers seat; looking to find a Win-Win situation about THE How-To to GET THEM learning together in a team (EVEN outside the School-Cocoon with Social Media…) and to prepare THEM for the workforce/labor/industry by being able for <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> for a Life-Long Learning once out of school!

Let us talk about Hygiene…

Strange, I make an introduction about Hygiene in an Cyber-Security Blog, ISN’T it?!! Well, there is a reason behind:

WHEN WE use a computer, Smartphone and/or any OTHER technical device (such as cars as well…) WE need to take care of them! AND our body? The same: WE need to have the daily reflexes to make for sure that WE don’t expose it to invasions of bacteria, virus, etc. Examples given: brushing teeth, showers, washing the hands after a toilet go, washing the hands before and after a meal, etc. Wearing a Condom when having sex, a necessary protection! Well OUR condom for the technical devices is the Anti-Virus, a MUST for Any-devices!!! Any-Devices, Apple as well?!!! YES!!! Please check the WHY in my Curation below please:

WE are used to these reflexes, aren’t WE?! At least WE should be!! SO, for computers, Laptops, Smartphones, tablets (iPads etc.), IoT devices (Smart-Home), WE should do the same, they costs a LOT of money and expensive stuff should get taken care of!! THE OTHER reason as well is, THAT WE are using the internet with THEM and so WE are meeting OTHER people with OUR technical device (which ever one it is…).

SO, that exactly the same as WHEN WE are meeting (as persons) OTHER people in Real-World: WHEN WE have a flu, WE will infect OTHER persons with it and an epidemic will occur!! WHEN OUR technical devices (which ever one it is…), connected to the internet, are NOT Up-To-date with the latest Updates they are vulnerable to threats (see it as a virus, e.g.) and once infected, WE will infect ALL the OTHERS as well (epidemic…)!!

As WE use these #AnyDevices with #AnyOS on a daily base, WE SHOULD be aware and develop a sense of Responsibility to protect each other!

ICT RESPONSIBILITYWell, the above written is ONLY an introduction, please read my Blog posts in different languages (EN, FR, DE):

ESP8266-NodeMCU

First Steps with the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module

In our previous tutorials we were using already the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module and we discussed about “Security“, “Cyber-Security” issues while using “IoT“, “Internet of Things” and the importance that the router MUST be protected by a NEW password and NOT ALLOW to let connect any devices to our router/internet, unless we decide to let them (ONLY our owns) connect!

Please check again the tutorials below:

It was a bit a difficult procedure to find out the “MAC Address” of the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module, isn’t it?! Well there is a more easy way to find out with a little Sketch.

Please check the tutorial and copy the Sketch from:

Now it is much more easy to run a project with a NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module. Connect your module to the computer through the USB cable,  chose the board in the Arduino IDE and upload the sketch. Check below the how-to, please.

Click the image, please, to enlarge.

.

Please check again (I don’t want to reinvent the wheel…) the tutorial below who explains very well in detail:

Once having the “MAC Address” of our NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module we can now easily incorporate it into the allowed devices in our router.

.

NOW, click on the button “Add Wireless Device” as shown in above image.

.

Router-4

.

A new window opens where you can add the new devices “MAC Address” which you wrote down before. Do so please and then click the button “OK“. Go back and have a look if the device is now in the authorized devices in your Network.

SO, now when you use a Sketch with “IoT” with the NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module, the device is recognized and allowed in your Network!

Badge with 2.8″ TFT Touch Screen with SDCard

We were already playing around with a 2.8 inch TFT Display and SDCard recently in a previous tutorial <===> First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | 2.8″ TFT Touch Screen with SDCard <===> and we will create a badge. The idea for creating a badge came as there is a Maker-Fest in Luxembourg on June 21-22 2018.

We will follow the above mentioned tutorial step by step and we will ALSO use the slide show for “Personal Branding“! We will ALSO use cardboard for the housing (case) to help for recycling. WHY “Personal Branding”? Well, lots or most students, learners, educators, teachers have already a website, blog, twitter account, Facebook page etc. SO WHY NOT showing these information to others and make some new friends while showing with pride your “Personalized Badge”! As cardboard housing (case) we will use the box from the delivered 2.8 inch TFT display as it fits perfectly for our project.

Concerning cutting cardboard, it isn’t actually that easy as one might think; my own experience… It needs some PracTICE as well as the appropriate tools. I suggest that you try it out first on cardboard boxes which are ready already for the recycling, e.g. take the measures of the 2.8 inch TFT display and try to cut it out two or three times before you are cutting out on the cardboard housing!! The exact measures for the 2.8 TFT display are 50 x 68 mm. Use appropriate tools for the cutting out; I used a set, please check the photo below with link for ordering it.

.

Cutting set

.

I used the cutting tool with the red shaft which fitted best for me…

Let us have a look how it looks without a housing (case) first, check photo below please.

.

Makerfest 2018-Gust MEES-Badge

.

The 2.8 inch TFT display has actually a GREAT resolution, it looks great.

NOW, take the cardboard box, open it and bend it so that the front side will be flat on your “Cutting Mat“. Take your aluminium ruler and center the 50 x 68 mm rectangle. Cut it out. Check if it fits, else make some cutting adjustments. Everything fits? OK, take now some self-adhesive paper, put it over front side and cut out to fit. It will look similar to this one, check photo, please.

.

Badge in Cardboard box

.

It looks nice, isn’t it? All we have to do now is to solder an ON/OFF switch to it and a “Reset-Button” as well as to fix it with a “Badge-Holder” and that’s it! The “Reset-Button” will be soldered in parallel to to the “Reset” of the Arduino board.

ESP8266 WiFi Weather Station with Color TFT Display

We were playing around already with LED MATRIX’s, devices to visualize measured values and/or texts. In this blog post (Tutorial) we will use a TFT Display (Thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display) with touch screen to display a three (3) days weather forecast with moon phases. This little weather station acquires its data over a Wi-Fi connection from an online weather server, Wunderground.

We will use devices from ADAFRUIT; they have developed a special product series for easy mounting, the FEATHER series. We need the TFT FeatherWing – 2.4″ 320×240 Touchscreen and the ADAFRUIT Feather HUZZAH which has included an ESP8266. We used the ESP8266 already in our previous blog post <===> First Steps with the ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Scrolling Text (Time, Temp., Humidity…) with 8×8 LED MATRIX  <===> so we are already familiar with its use!

What is GREAT with this project, there ISN’T any wiring, no cables to connect; apart from plugging in the accumulator! 😉 BUT, please check the video below who explains in detail:

.

.

Detailed parts list, supplier and prices

Please find below the detailed parts list as well as the supplier and the prices.

..

I suggest to you to read the full article from ADAFRUIT here <===> https://learn.adafruit.com/wifi-weather-station-with-tft-display/overview?embeds=allow  <===> who explains in detail ALL the necessary steps!!

For the case of the weather station ADAFRUIT provides the 3D Design files, so you can 3D print it:

As you can see the price is reasonable for this project, ONLY 62.40$ and easy to realize! ALL what YOU need is a bit time, passion and here we GO! 😉 Have FUN!

Preparation: Libraries, code and API Key

There is some preparation needed before we can test our code for the weather station: I suggest that you read and that you follow each step as shown in this tutorial by ADAFRUIT (very important, otherwise it won’t work!!):

It isn’t difficult, but it needs some time and you must be careful to follow each step!

We need ALSO an account on the weather server Wunderground to create our “API” (Application Programming Interface) which we need to implement in our code settings! THIS is also well explained here:

Same procedure as explained already above, follow very carefully each action step by step!

.

Are there some pit falls?

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01YES, this could be!

.

The code is running, how it shows up in reality

Well, you haven’t encounter any problem or the problems are solved, this is WHAT you will see appearing on the TFT:

1
Updating Time
2Updating Conditions
3Updating Forecasts 4Updating Astronomy
5Done...  6Wrong settings code

.

As you can see in “Picture 6“, that is what shows up on the first start! Is it the right time which is displayed? Is it the right measure unit which is displayed (°C OR °F)? If SO, it is OK then, if NOT, then we have to look on the code and change some settings!!

Here below the How-To:

Open the Arduino IDE and click on the “Settings.h” tab, check below where and how to change (adapt) the settings to your country and time zone.

Once done, save the code and upload it again. You will GET the right data displayed then as shown below:

First Steps with the ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module | Scrolling Text (Time, Temp., Humidity…) with 8×8 LED MATRIX

In our previous blog post (Tutorial…), we were playing around with a LED MATRIX <===> First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Scrolling Text with 8×8 LED MATRIX  <===> and we will continue to use the LED MATRIX, but this time with a Wi-Fi connection. We will use the module “ESP8266” which you can purchase worldwide around as it is very popular and it costs ONLY 7.49 €. I ordered mine on Amazon in Germany:

Good to know is the PINOUT of the ESP8266

.

ESP8266-NodeMCU

Click the image, please, to access the source.

Before we can use the module “ESP8266” and before the wiring we need to do some preparation:

.

Check the video below please who explains the first steps with the ESP8266:

.

.

Now that we have configured the ESP8266 in the Arduino IDE we need some other information which are necessary to implement into the code. It is the name of the Wi-Fi Network (SSID) and the Password for the Wi-Fi Network.  AND a new device connecting to the router (the ESP8266) must GET allowed to do so, if your router is well configured for Cyber-Security! Thus meaning for Cyber-Security reasons: in the router security settings any device connecting to your Wi-Fi Network SHOULD NOT have access unless it is your own ones and unless you allow THEM to access!

.

My shown images from the Router are from a “FritzBox Router“, but it should be similar in other Routers!!

.

Router-1-corr

In the above image you see which devices are connected to your Network, to do so: open your router with your login and/or password and look under “Radio Network” (or similar). IF you don’t see your “ESP8266” in the Network while you run the code and it isn’t working does mean that your Network is well secured as it doesn’t allow any other device connecting to the Network!

Router-2-corr

Click above image, please, to enlarge.

.

You need then to give permission to the device to connect. To do so: Open the Security settings in your Router and click on “Allow all new wireless devices“. NOW, you will see that the “ESP8266” is part of the Network! Note down on a piece of paper its “MAC Address” and protect your Network again by clicking on “Do not allow new wireless devices“!!

.

Router-3

Click on the image, please, to enlarge.

Required:

  • SSID
  • WLAN Password
  • Acces authorization for the Wi-Fi

The Code for the ESP8266 and first try

I used a video tutorial in German from Switzerland as well as its Code for this project as it is very well explained. Even if you don’t understand German, you can follow step by step in the video:

.

.

While watching the video on YouTube, you will find the download link for the code, check below please:

.

Video Tutorial-2

.

You can find another interesting code here on the blog as well as the wiring diagram and a GREAT description (in German):

Unzip the code and install it by following the video instructions; check @ 8.30 minutes and follow step by step…

After everything is installed and the code is in the Arduino IDE you need to adapt the code to your needs: check video @ 10.36 minutes

  • Entering your Network name, the SSID
  • Entering the Network-Key; Check above Router images…

.

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01When you run the code for the first time: disconnect the two wires for the power supply (GND and VCC) as the LED Matrix will light all the dots and the power consumption will be by 1.5 Ampere; thus meaning the components, especially the chips will become hot, even could get overheated!! Once the Arduino IDE shows you that the code is uploaded reconnect them and it should work.

.

That’s it folks; now you can run the code and have fun! I takes a bit time before the code runs: first “Compiling Sketch…“, followed by “Uploading…” and “Done Uploading…” and the ESP8266 tries to connect with the Wi-Fi Network…

Connecting

.

If everything was made correctly as described above you should receive now your personal weather data… FIRST the time will GET displayed for a couple of seconds (that period could GET changed by your settings in the code…)…

.

Time

.

Then the scrolling text starts displaying the temperature, humidity, air pressure, rain risk in % and wind speed…

.

Scrolling text: temp., humidity...

.

Stay tuned for next blog posts and enjoy it 😉

Have FUN with your “LEARNing-By-Doing project” and try out ALSO the other examples 😉
