Social Distancing Monitor with Alarm, Arduino NANO and I2C LCD1602 Display

In times of the Coronavirus-Crisis (Covid_19), it might be GOOD to respect the 2 meters distance to avoid getting infected!!! But not everybody can estimate distances, nor are ALL persons respecting the 2 meters rule!!! So came the idea to build an easy to realize gadget, which measures the distance and gives an alarm when the 2 meters are not respected.

First of all, like usual, I was searching the internet to find out if there isn’t already such a project around. And YES, there is one; I found a tutorial with an Arduino MEGA and a LCD1602 ISP with provided code as well. Please check below:

 

This tutorial gave me the idea to start. Instead an Arduino MEGA, I used an Arduino NANO; and instead of an LCD1602 ISP, I used an LCD1602 I2C.

Thus meaning: it needs a bit to adjust the code in the sketch in the above mentioned tutorial and it’s LESS cabling, wiring needed to connect the I2C LCD1602 display.

Connecting the HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor:

 

Connections to the Arduino NANO:

Vcc+ gets connected to + 5V

GND to GND

ECHO gets connected to PIN 10

TRIGGER gets connected to PIN 9


Connecting the Buzzer for the acoustic Alarm:

 

The + sign of the Buzzer gets connected to PIN 8 of the Arduino NANO and the other pin to GND!

CitiZEN-Science: The PracTICE

Through the Maker-Movement and IoT (Internet of Things) there is already a LOT happening and different Networks are collecting Data through Sensors and make them available for everybody to have access and study them! Such sensors are e.g.:

  • Air Quality
  • Meteo
  • Street traffic
  • Radiation
  • People (counter) traffic
  • Water Quality
  • Wind velocity
  • Radar for excess of car speed
  • Inundation prevention
  • Observations on:
    • Nature (birds, etc.)
    • Archaeology discovering

Those, above mentioned  applications can even be assembled together and so being a precious source for communes and Governments! Mostly such projects are done with an ARDUINO and/or Raspberry PI based micro controller and a mini computer: The main difference between them is Arduino is microcontroller board while Raspberry PI is a mini computer.

Thus meaning: that fits perfect for the Maker-Movement and could GET integrated easily into STEM projects! 

Well, after following for a long time different possibilities on the How-To to get globally access to such IMPORTANT Big-Data for everyone, I found out THAT “The Things Network” is a perfect way! Please find below the address and the projects:

Badge with 2.8″ TFT Touch Screen with SDCard

We were already playing around with a 2.8 inch TFT Display and SDCard recently in a previous tutorial <===> First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | 2.8″ TFT Touch Screen with SDCard <===> and we will create a badge. The idea for creating a badge came as there is a Maker-Fest in Luxembourg on June 21-22 2018.

We will follow the above mentioned tutorial step by step and we will ALSO use the slide show for “Personal Branding“! We will ALSO use cardboard for the housing (case) to help for recycling. WHY “Personal Branding”? Well, lots or most students, learners, educators, teachers have already a website, blog, twitter account, Facebook page etc. SO WHY NOT showing these information to others and make some new friends while showing with pride your “Personalized Badge”! As cardboard housing (case) we will use the box from the delivered 2.8 inch TFT display as it fits perfectly for our project.

Concerning cutting cardboard, it isn’t actually that easy as one might think; my own experience… It needs some PracTICE as well as the appropriate tools. I suggest that you try it out first on cardboard boxes which are ready already for the recycling, e.g. take the measures of the 2.8 inch TFT display and try to cut it out two or three times before you are cutting out on the cardboard housing!! The exact measures for the 2.8 TFT display are 50 x 68 mm. Use appropriate tools for the cutting out; I used a set, please check the photo below with link for ordering it.

Makerfest 2018-Gust MEES-Badge

.

The 2.8 inch TFT display has actually a GREAT resolution, it looks great.

NOW, take the cardboard box, open it and bend it so that the front side will be flat on your “Cutting Mat“. Take your aluminium ruler and center the 50 x 68 mm rectangle. Cut it out. Check if it fits, else make some cutting adjustments. Everything fits? OK, take now some self-adhesive paper, put it over front side and cut out to fit. It will look similar to this one, check photo, please.

It looks nice, isn’t it? All we have to do now is to solder an ON/OFF switch to it and a “Reset-Button” as well as to fix it with a “Badge-Holder” and that’s it! The “Reset-Button” will be soldered in parallel to to the “Reset” of the Arduino board.

1.8 Inch TFT with DS3231 RTC and Arduino

We were already playing around with LED MATRIX for time and temperature display with a Wi-Fi connection on an ESP8266, but we didn’t create yet a project with an RTC (Real Time Clock) module and an 1.8 inch TFT display; here we go. We will use again a ready to go code, but we will change it a bit for better looking. SO, we will learn How-To code rectangles and lines for a TFT screen, very easy… It is GOOD to try out different components to get used with coding, Maker, MakerED… Especially when we use displays, which ever ones, as one sees directly the results; sensation of direct success!!

The tutorial in the video shows an Arduino UNO, but we will use in this tutorial an Arduino NANO as it is less expensive (+/- 1/3 of the price of an Arduino UNO) and also it takes less place when integrating the components into a box.

When copying the code on the mentioned website <===>   http://educ8s.tv/arduino-real-time-clock/  <===> you must be aware of some TYPOS in it!!! Check below please where they are and how to correct them. Once corrected save the code in the Arduino IDE  and upload it. Here are the errors, check below please.

As you can see above the “Arduino IDE” shows an error and highlighted it in Line 1. The sign “<” is too much, delete it and save your sketch, then upload it again to the Arduino NANO. You might get a second error message again, check below please.

Same procedure as above, save it in the Arduino IDE and upload it again to the Arduino NANO (UNO). Here what will show up now.

There are some problems with the time and day still… I didn’t follow step-by-step instructions on the video, OK let’s have a look in deep now!! Please check the video tutorial @ 03:15 for the settings and follow them strictly, otherwise your clock setting will NOT working!! Done so, it will be working great. I did some more changes in the coding such as changing the text colors and ALSO to draw a rectangle and some lines to make it look BETTER, please check below.

As you can see, I added some new code snippet from lines 142 to 151, this will draw a rectangle around the TFT screen and it will draw white lines under the measured values. It will look BETTER, well that’s what I think and my wife as well; you just do the way as you want, up to you 😉 Here below the result…

Elegoo-2.8 TFTI was very happy when I got delivered that nice looking 2.8 inches TFT with incorporated SDCard. I ordered it on Amazon and it is from ELEGOO. It was delivered with a small CD where a lot of coding examples are integrated and a well done manual. SO, I started as soon as I unpacked it…

First step to do is opening the CD and reading the manual which is in PDF format… After that, chose the examples to see what is possible to do with TFT Display and the Arduino.

To use the SDCard to create a Slide-Show, click on “Example05-ShowBMP“, the following window will open, see below…

The used TFT uses an ILI9341 controller and the code could get downloaded from the website of ELEGOO.

Double-click the “ShowBMP.ino” and the Arduino-IDE will open with the inserted code…

As I wanted to use the SDCard to create a Slide-Show, so I remixed a bit the code in the sketch and I uploaded different images to the SDCard. BUT, it didn’t work :(((

I checked the manual which says:

  • The SDCard MUST be formatted first (use a NEW one as everything will get erased!!!)
    • TIP: DON’T format on quick way, it DIDN’T work for me; use the full format way!!
  • Images MUST be in 320 x 240 pix
  • Images MUST be in Bitmap format
  • Images MUST be saved as 28-bit Bitmaps
  • Images name MUST be less than 20 characters

SO, I tried out a lot of different online image converters, I was struggling around for nearly a week as I didn’t get it working, frustration… BUT as I NEVER give up before I am on the winning side, so I was looking much more around on the internet to find the perfect solution, and I found it.

And that program is actually present on my PC, it is “Paint“: it converts (nearly) any image to the desired format so also Bitmap and THIS ALSO in 28-bit Bitmaps!! Check he PIC below, please.

After saving my images with “Paint” into 28-bit Bitmaps everything worked perfect, actually with unexpected GREAT quality!

SO, for that YOU, dear readers, and Newbies on “Coding“, don’t have to struggle around like me, I created this tutorial.

For the assembling, wiring and explication of the code, I suggest to watch this video tutorial, check below, please.

Image for the slide showAs I wanted to use the TFT display as a digital badge with slide show, I created my own images by:

  • Creating a picture with exactly 320 x 240 pix and a black background
  • Using PhotoScape (image editor) to insert text and photos
  • Opening that created sample in Paint and saving it into 28-bit Bitmap
  • Saving that sample to the SDCard and inserting it into the SDCard reader of the TFT
  • Uploading the code to Arduino

BUT, surprise, it didn’t work!??? The photo was mirrored, funny isn’t it? OK, so back again to the Photo-Editor and “Flip Horizontal“, delete the image on the SDCard and upload the new one…

Now everything is working perfectly 😉 I learned a lot with this project, especially being patient and not giving up, as well as learning more about the “Paint” program!

Let us repeat the steps:

  • First prepare the images (photos)
    • Images MUST be in 320 x 240 pix
    • Images MUST be in Bitmap format
    • Images MUST be saved as 28-bit Bitmaps
  • The SDCard MUST be formatted first (use a NEW one as everything will get erased!!!)
    • TIP: DON’T format on quick way, it DIDN’T work for me; use the full format way!!
    • Save the images (photos) to the SDCard
    • Images name MUST be less than 20 characters
  • Double-click the “ShowBMP.ino” from the demo examples and the Arduino-IDE will open with the inserted code…
    • Delete the images shown in the code and replace them by your own (must be the exactly name as the saved, check on the SDCard…)
  • Insert the SDCard to the TFT and upload the code.

The slideshow will run, have fun 😉

The next step will be to put everything into a housing, I ordered some stuff and after I get it delivered and finished it I will update this blog to show you the result, stay tuned 😉 BTW: I will use the shown example as an electronic BADGE

What’s the secret of success while innovating?

I hear you screaming already: I would like to be innovative, I even have some ideas BUT I am fearing about WHAT OTHERS would say and think about!! To be honest, NEVER look about WHAT OTHERS would say, innovation is something NEW and the new will GET up from the beginning NO acceptance, apart from a few which Professional-Development is Up-To-Date, and you probably (mostly) will GET even very hard criticism because people tend for “Listening to reply and NOT for understanding”!!

 

With ICT in EDUcation and while being (nearly) Up-To-Date with your Professional-Development while you have read the most important books about Modern-EDUcation from renowned researchers and by being online and using Social Media, especially Twitter, you certainly “feel” what MUST change to give OUR students, learners, BEST EDUcation. DO SO, I am pushing you if necessary, the world needs people with courage, motivation, engagement to bring Modern-EDUcation farther!!

And I am NOT talking about tools, Apps, THEY are ONLY facilitators; THE main so-called tool is YOU!!! YOU are modeling the statues (your learners, students) from a raw piece to a Master-Piece because of YOUR talents, knowledge, experience, Up-To-Date Professional-Development. It’s YOUR talent, like in arts, YOUR creativity who sparkles over to the learners, students with YOUR motivation, engagement, passion…

IF NO effort is brought in, NO results will come out!!

 

NOW, you know the secret ingredients (it’s like cooking…) and then comes the way of the How-To, there WE need to use ALSO Social Media, especially Twitter to connect with the students, learners!! Did I say connecting with students, learners on Twitter and learning together with the whole world; an OPEN place, NOT a closed classroom!!??? Sounds strange, isn’t it!??? Well, it isn’t strange at all, as it is PracTICE for the students, learners, to GET straight in to WHAT they will get used once in the workforce. It’s actually the BEST PracTICE they can get.

 

As on January 2018 I just have seen ONE Twitter-Chat (if you know another one, let me know please…) WHERE students, learners (average age 20 years old) were involved and it comes from Canada, the University of Ottawa, run by Pierre LEVY. By following that Twitter-Chat one can see and analyze THE way HOW students are thinking by bringing in THEIR Critical-Thinking, that shows their learning instantly… AND, the students use as well the <===> Twitter Moments <===> to make THEIR reflection about their learning while collecting different tweets from different persons on the Twitter-Chat <===> #UOTM18 <===> and even creating blog posts about it to reflect their learning. So, as I see it in we have two binary options – stay unfinished or be completely miserable. Let me explain, if we attempt to do the same things for kids in 2028 as we do today we will be woefully ineffective. Very rarely is someone who is ineffective at their job fulfilled by their job and happy in their professional life.

Okay, 2028 seems pretty far away. I challenge you to consider if it is really possible to make slight changes for eight years and then have a monumental shift in years nine and ten. Probably not. So, what’s the point?

The change in our world is constant. Our kids are different than they were ten years ago and will be vastly different ten years from now. Our communities are changing. Our world is fundamentally different and will continue to evolve. In education we must adjust to them and to our world (more importantly their world) or we are going to face becoming dangerously irrelevant.

So, as educators we have one choice. One option to stay relevant. One option to compete. One option to serve our kids with integrity. And perhaps most importantly, one option to be personally happy. That option is to stay unfinished. Embrace change. Love the grind. Have a deep, hard, introspective conversation with yourself that it is never going to be easier to be great at your job. And be okay with that realization.

And I hope – deep in my soul – that accepting the fact that it is never going to be easier energizes you. You were not put on this Earth to be average. None of us were. You have chosen to be a part of the best profession in the world. We have the opportunity to change lives every single day. It is an awesome responsibility, but an even more incredible opportunity.

As most of you know already, I am an autodidact, a person who is learning on its own. I can choose WHAT to learn, WHEN to learn, in WHICH order I learn the different topics and HOW quick I will learn! AND especially WHERE I will learn; not necessary in a school, BUT online and from books! That is what makes me learning very quick and to understand it also! As I am getting asked very often (people are astonished about…), so I decided to write this blog post to give some TIPS, how YOU can do also <===> #LEARNing2LEARN for #LifeLongLEARNing <===> with pleasure.
