My participation for the SID2019

programmerman-animatedWHAT is special this year with my participation on SID2019?

I created a ===> #GlobalCollaboration #blog in 2017 <=== from  (my pseudo on twitter) & @ICTPHMS  for  about . The authors are from Luxembourg/Europe (me), one female teacher from the USA and a male teacher from the USA WHO are using my blog post to learn together and sharing THEIR practice with YOU dear readers.

Well, there is a lot of different views about ===> Digital CitiZENship <=== WE will explore WHAT could be THE BEST way to teach and to learn about Digital CitiZENship (hashtag on Twitter is #digcit).

Here below the links of OUR blog post:

How does it come that I post Global-Collaboration blog posts? Well, once the #ProfessionalDevelopment is Upto-Date, one does understand THAT learning in a team brings out a win-win situation and that a generation exchange is benefit for all of the participants as anyone learns from each other. BTW: here below other Global-Collaboration blogs with teaching persons from AustraliaUSAFranceLuxembourg (me):

Scrolling text with I2C-LCD1602

I was looking for a simple project for beginners, newbies on Coding and MakerED. A looong time ago since we did a project with ONLY four (4) wires, isn’t it! Well here is one which is very easy to create, a “Scrolling text on a LCD1602 with “I2C-Bus”. In previous blog post we were already using and explaining the “I2C-Bus” with an LCD, so it will be easy to create this one…

As a reminder, the I2C-Bus on an LCD1602:

Let us first have a look on the wiring, which is actually very easy.

The full tutorial could be found here, which I invite you to read carefully:

In  the tutorial are mentioned also the download link for the code in the upper side of the website, download it and check it; there are some bugs in 😉 I will explain where to look for changing the code, it’s actually very easy, here we GO!

Here the download link again:

The code looks like this (partial view for WHAT is interesting us…).

.

When we look at line 6, it is just a “comment” and so it will result in an ERROR, it should become uncommented by ” // “. In my case I didn’t get any text displayed, so I had a look at line 18 which is ” lcd.begin (16,2);” and I changed it into ===> “lcd.begin (0x3F,16,2);” which worked!! SO, that’s my recommendations, otherwise the Sketch works fine and you can change the lines 9 and 10 where you bring in your own text; NOT more than 16 characters, please 😉 Well, give it a try and find out yourselves…  Here below a screenshot with the working code…

I was looking to find the most easy way to show people and to GET them interested into “Coding” with a minimum of components and expenses, as well as having directly a “success feeling” to be motivated to continue slowly but surely! Here it is; ONLY three (3) wires to connect and ONLY two (2) components to buy for a low budget as well. Temperature and humidity are words well known by everybody and so WE will use a Temperature/Humidity Sensor to run this project. By using terms which the learners know already (Temperature/Humidity) they will NOT GO into “Unknown Land”, makes them feel comfortable 😉

WE will use the tutorial shown below in the video, please check it:

.

.

The link for the tutorial blog is here, please check it:

YOU will find all the necessary information in it such as the how to connecting the components as well as the codes for the “Arduino IDE” and the “Processing code“.

As YOU will remark: there are ONLY three (3) wires to connect, you can count until 3, isn’t it 😉 SO, very easy…

Here below how I did wire it, and you will see how easy it is actually…

.

DHT22-ARDUINO NANO

Click image, please, to enlarge it.

.

You need to install now the Processing software, please check the link below; install it and open it:

Concerning the code for the “Arduino IDE” AND the “Processing IDE“, we will follow the steps on the proposed tutorial…

First copy the code for the Arduino, check below:

.

ARDUINO CODE

Click the image, please, to enlarge

.

Next step: Connect the USB cable to your computer, copy the code, paste it into the Arduino IDE and upload it.

Now copy the “Processing Code”  paste it into the Processing IDE and upload it.

.

PROCESSING CODE

Click the image, please, to enlarge it.

.

IMPORTANT: In the above code in “Line 14” is marked “COM4”! Check if it is the same PORT as in your Arduino IDE, else change the PORT number; for me it was “PORT 8”, but it depends on your computer… JUST change the number, e.g. “COM8”. Click now the button “RUN” on Processing and you will GET the shown result below…

What’s the secret of success while innovating? | Motivation, Courage, Engagement, NEVER Give UP…

What’s the secret of success while innovating? | Motivation, Courage, Engagement, NEVER Give UP…

.

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

What’s the secret of success while innovating?

I hear you screaming already: I would like to be innovative, I even have some ideas BUT I am fearing about WHAT OTHERS would say and think about!! To be honest, NEVER look about WHAT OTHERS would say, innovation is something NEW and the new will GET up from the beginning NO acceptance, apart from a few which Professional-Development is Up-To-Date, and you probably (mostly) will GET even very hard criticism because people tend for “Listening to reply and NOT for understanding”!!

With ICT in EDUcation and while being (nearly) Up-To-Date with your Professional-Development while you have read the most important books about Modern-EDUcation from renowned researchers and by being online and using Social Media, especially Twitter, you certainly “feel” what MUST change to give OUR students, learners, BEST EDUcation. DO SO, I am pushing you if necessary, the world needs people with courage, motivation, engagement to bring Modern-EDUcation farther!!

And I am NOT talking about tools, Apps, THEY are ONLY facilitators; THE main so-called tool is YOU!!! YOU are modeling the statues (your learners, students) from a raw piece to a Master-Piece because of YOUR talents, knowledge, experience, Up-To-Date Professional-Development. It’s YOUR talent, like in arts, YOUR creativity who sparkles over to the learners, students with YOUR motivation, engagement, passion…

IF NO effort is brought in, NO results will come out!!

NOW, you know the secret ingredients (it’s like cooking…) and then comes the way of the How-To, there WE need to use ALSO Social Media, especially Twitter to connect with the students, learners!! Did I say connecting with students, learners on Twitter and learning together with the whole world; an OPEN place, NOT a closed classroom!!??? Sounds strange, isn’t it!??? Well, it isn’t strange at all, as it is PracTICE for the students, learners, to GET straight in to WHAT they will get used once in the workforce. It’s actually the BEST PracTICE they can get.

As on January 2018 I just have seen ONE Twitter-Chat (if you know another one, let me know please…) WHERE students, learners (average age 20 years old) were involved and it comes from Canada, the University of Ottawa, run by Pierre LEVY. Please check below some screenshots from the transcript of the Twitter-Chat:

.

By following that Twitter-Chat one can see and analyze THE way HOW students are thinking by bringing in THEIR Critical-Thinking, that shows their learning instantly… AND, the students use as well the <===> Twitter Moments <===> to make THEIR reflection about their learning while collecting different tweets from different persons on the Twitter-Chat <===> #UOTM18 <===> and even creating blog posts about it to reflect their learning. The moments and the blogs are made outside the <===> #SchoolCocoon (school, university…) <===> and Pierre LEVY is using this practice since 3-4 years already.

[Gust MEES] I had also already created a blog post about “Reflection” in Twitter-Chats in June 2016: Update Twitter Chats: WHAT To DO BETTER!?

Start text from PJ CAPOSEY Making Education Meaningful

So, as I see it in we have two binary options – stay unfinished or be completely miserable. Let me explain, if we attempt to do the same things for kids in 2028 as we do today we will be woefully ineffective. Very rarely is someone who is ineffective at their job fulfilled by their job and happy in their professional life.

Okay, 2028 seems pretty far away. I challenge you to consider if it is really possible to make slight changes for eight years and then have a monumental shift in years nine and ten. Probably not. So, what’s the point?

The change in our world is constant. Our kids are different than they were ten years ago and will be vastly different ten years from now. Our communities are changing. Our world is fundamentally different and will continue to evolve. In education we must adjust to them and to our world (more importantly their world) or we are going to face becoming dangerously irrelevant.

So, as educators we have one choice. One option to stay relevant. One option to compete. One option to serve our kids with integrity. And perhaps most importantly, one option to be personally happy. That option is to stay unfinished. Embrace change. Love the grind. Have a deep, hard, introspective conversation with yourself that it is never going to be easier to be great at your job. And be okay with that realization.

And I hope – deep in my soul – that accepting the fact that it is never going to be easier energizes you. You were not put on this Earth to be average. None of us were. You have chosen to be a part of the best profession in the world. We have the opportunity to change lives every single day. It is an awesome responsibility, but an even more incredible opportunity.

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project | LCD and Sensors Project

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project | LCD and Sensors Project

.

Temperature/Humidity Sensor DHT11 and LCD1602

.

Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project | LCD and Sensors Project | Temperature/Humidity Sensor DHT11

SO, as I got my new Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project I am playing around a bit with it. In my previous post WE were wiring and testing a LCD-Display and coding to display a bit text on the LCD. That was actually very easy, so lets try out now some “Sensors“, e.g. a Temperature/Humidity Sensor and a Ultrasonic Sensor to measure distances. The measured values of those sensors will get displayed on the LCD-Display.

Let us start first with the Temperature/Humidity Sensor DHT11 which is included in the Kit:

WE will use the following tutorial from Dejan Nedelkovski (How To Mechatronics) as it is very well documented and explained (no need for me to create a new one…). First we will check the video below, please, where we will get explained the How-To and some theoretical explications:

.

.

SO, now after knowing what will be necessary to do, we will first make the wiring of the LCD-Display, please check below:

.

LCD1602-Wiring with Arduino

Click the image above please to access the tutorial

.

As you can see in the above wiring diagram, there isn’t that much wiring to do. When following the tutorial <===> Arduino LCD Tutorial <===> you will get proposed some examples of code to play around with. Try them out to repeat the learned from previous blog post or just leave the wiring as it is to proceed to the next step, the wiring of the Temperature/Humidity Sensor DHT11.

We will continue to follow the tutorial <===> DHT11 & DHT22 Sensors Temperature and Humidity Tutorial using Arduino <===> where the Temperature/Humidity Sensor DHT22 is used. As we use DHT11, you need only to forget about the resistor as it is not needed, replace it by a connection cable (strip).

.

DHT22-Wiring Diagram

Click the above image please to access the tutorial

.

The wiring ready now, we go for the coding. The sketch is available here <===>  DHT11 & DHT22 Sensors Temperature and Humidity Tutorial using Arduino <===> Upload it into the Arduino IDE and give it a try. You will see the result as shown in the image below:

.

DHT22 Code for DHT11

.

There is something strange on the displayed values, isn’t!? WHAT happend!? Let us make some trouble-shooting: the wiring is OK, otherwise the wouldn’t be anything displayed, is the sensor defective!? If you have a second one, replace it to make sure. Same results again, hmmmm!? OK, it’s mysterious on some way, but there must be a solution for it… Let us check the sketch, the code, again to try to understand WHAT the Arduino is getting told to do and WHY the display shows something completely different, the problem is certainly then in the code. Let us review the video tutorial, perhaps we missed something (I did…). In the video, if really listened to, it get explained the two possibilities, using a sensor DHT11 or a DHT22. The code is written for a DHT22 sensor and we use a DHT11 sensor; so WHAT to change now in the code!? Please check the screenshot of the sketch below:

.

Sketch-DHT22-Arduino

Click the image please to enlarge it

.

Once change that code line upload it to the Arduino IDE and see WHAT happens on the LCD-Screen. See PIC below please.

.

Temperature/Humidity Sensor DHT11 and LCD1602

.

Well, that’s success!! It works correctly now 😉 Play around with it to see the difference on the LCD-Display while blowing on the sensor. Give it a bit time that the measured values go back again to the previous shown one. SO, as we had now a positive experience and where we can see WHAT is happening on the LCD-Display, let us try another project, we will measure distances with the Ultrasonic-Sensor. But befor we ared going for a NEW project we need to save our project, check the video tutorial below please.

.

Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project | LCD and Sensors Project | Ultrasonic Sensor HC-SR04

We will keep exactly the same wiring diagram for the LCD-Display and taking away the Temperature/Humidity sensor with its wires from the Breadboard. Then we will have a look on the following tutorial, we will use the tutorial from  Dejan Nedelkovski (How To Mechatronics) again, check please <===> http://howtomechatronics.com/tutorials/arduino/ultrasonic-sensor-hc-sr04/ <===> as the previous one was working well! SO, remember that you have to remove the DHT11 Sensor and the wires from it to the Arduino board and follow the next wiring diagram, please. First we will watch the video tutorial.

.

.

Here below the wiring diagram.

ULTRASONIC-HC-SR04-Wiring diagram-LCD-Display

Click the image please to access the tutorial

.

Next step is to load the code, follow <===> If you want to display the results from the HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor on an LCD you can use the following source code from <===> http://howtomechatronics.com/tutorials/arduino/ultrasonic-sensor-hc-sr04/ <===> and to upload it to the Arduino IDE. That’s it folks, check below please to see the result!

.

ULTRASONIC SENSOR-HC-SR04-and LCD-DISPLAY

.

It works up from the beginning, a success experience! Well folks, as you see it isn’t that much difficult to play around with the Arduino and Coding; don’t forget to save your project so that you can use it again if once needed and try out other projects as well, check the <===> Elegoo UNO R3 Project Super Starter Kit <===> PDF download to GO for NEW LEARNing-By-Doing adventures 😉

.

Was this post helpful for you!? Please let me know by your comments, thank you!

Super Starter Kit UNO R3 Project From Elegoo

Elegoo Super Starter-Kit Project Arduino UNO R3In one of my previous blog posts I used Arduino-UNO Starter Kit, which I ordered at Conrad (English version) and I wasn’t really impressed by the manual, it didn’t satisfy to my expectations and needs. SO, I was looking around to find some distributors for a BETTER version… At “Amazon US” I found Elegoo UNO Project Super Starter Kit with Tutorial for Arduino. First of all, the kit is delivered in a plastic box and its price is also attractive, $34.99.

The manual with the code, libraries and tutorials is on a DVD. So, I was looking first on the DVD and reading the Manual in PDF format to see the quality of the tutorials and the tutorials in PDF are very well documented. Once knowing WHAT is possible to do I made my choice for the “LCD-Tutorial“…

Below is the “Wiring diagram“, the How-To to connect the wires to make it work.

.

LCD-Wiring Diagram

.

As yo can see, it isn’t that much to do. Once the wiring ready, it is time to upload the code to the IDE and make it run to the success 😉 With the delivered code you will see the message “Hello World” on the LCD-Display.

SO, why not playing around a bit to understand the code and changing the text message in <===> lcd.print(“Hello, World!”); <===> into something different, something more personal!? That’s WHAT I did, here my code change:

lcd.begin(16, 2);
// Print a message to the LCD.
lcd.print(“Gust MEES – LCD”);

which shows up as, see image below please.

.

Arduino-Change of code for LCD-Display

.

The LCD-Display shows now my name as well (photo was taken when the counter was at 62) as my age, yes I am 62 years old (actually young, LOL); meaning that WHEN I can do this you for sure are able to do it! SO, WHAT are you waiting for to START learning about coding!!?

Reflecting for ideas:

SO, WHY not assembling everything into a box and use it as your personal “Door Name Display“, play around with some text and find out…

Ready, START, GO… Have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing 😉

Now, hundreds of thousands of threads are Tweeted every day! But this method of Tweeting, while effective and popular, can be tricky for some to create and it’s often tough to read or discover all the Tweets in a thread. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that we’re making it simpler to thread Tweets together, and to find threads, so it’s easier to express yourself on Twitter and stay informed.

Critical Thinking AND Proactive Thinking a MUST in Modern-EDU!

Critical Thinking AND Proactive Thinking a MUST in Modern-EDU!

.

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

.

Critical Thinking AND Proactive Thinking a MUST in Modern-EDU! WHY!?

Looks to me as WE will live THE same as in 50’s-60’s with “James DEAN“, Living on the edge Youth & Society“, overload of information!? Change? At that time period it was TV, NOW it’s the internet, similarities? Well, I think so!! A NEW media showed up, the internet, and with the internet ALSO Social-Media. MOST of people are just consumers and DON’T see the dangers NOR do THEY accept THEM!! It’s a Virtual-World which THEY can’t imagine about HOW it will have an impact on Real-World!! BOTH, the Virtual-World and the Real-World are influencing each other!

.

critical-thinking_ENG2

WE are facing actually (2017) “Fake News“, MOST coming and being sponsored by politics interests!!! Just follow “Donald TRUMP’s election campaign and his actually acting…” and YOU will understand WHAT is going on! I encourage YOU to go for “Deep-THINKing” about WHAT is happening in Virtual-World THAT will influence the Real-World!!!

Knowing THIS, you certainly agree with me that there is a MUST to learn about “Critical THINKing, but HOW!?? Please read my curation articles below:

Read also the article below, please:

.

Radical Pedagogy: Education has the power to change social inequality by nurturing a generation with an educated mistrust of everything that has been indoctrinated before. This educational stance is one that we must all strive for as the moral purpose of education.

.

And WHAT about Proactive-Thinking?

Teaching, the profession that creates all other professionsProactive-Thinking SHOULD be burned in into EVERY Educators, Teachers MIND! WHY!??? The MOST IMPORTANT for any education related persons should be THEIR students, learners and the how to to prepare THEM for THEIR future!!

THIS Proactive-Thinking results in getting informed about WHAT is the need from the workforce, industry etc. to make sure that the future workers, employees… will be able to help the country to stay competitive with well educated persons! Especially for NEW jobs who will be created because of ICT, where nearly no one knows WHAT those jobs could be!!

Therefore it is very important that Educators, Teachers focus THEIR Professional Development first on the skills that students, learners need to have!

Read my blog post, below please:

ICT RESPONSIBILITY

AND as WE are working with ICT, it is MANDATORY that WE will have knowledge about Cyber Security to protect at its BEST OUR students, learners and THAT WE forward OUR knowledge to THEM!

Please read my blog post below:

WHY is Proactive-Thinking IMPORTANT and a MUST in Modern-Education with and about ICT!?

.

Proactive-Thinking is ALSO a MUST in Makerspaces and MakerEd

To ensure the safety of OUR students, learners, WE MUST be informed about Safety-Rules when working with different tools and the possible dangers of those tools!!

Please read also my blog post below:

And as usually, I remind YOU about the “Synthesizing Mind“!

Social Media Twitter: WHAT Is Its Attraction And WHY Is IT Important For EDUcation!?

Social Media Twitter: WHAT Is Its Attraction And WHY Is IT Important For EDUcation!?

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

Social Media Twitter: WHAT Is Its Attraction And WHY Is IT Important For EDUcation!?

First of all, one can’t ignore existing trends which are already existing in Virtual World since ages and one SHOULD adapt for it in Real World, especially in Modern EDUcation! Social Media plays already a BIG role in business, so students, learners need to get taught about twitter and its importance for THEIR future jobs!

WHY teaching something where one has ONLY 140 characters to express themselves!? When I first heard about twitter that’s THE question I was posing myself as well!! But after one year observing and analyzing tweets I changed my mind and I became very active on twitter!!! Make the question DIFFERENT: Just think different, WHAT is the positive side about how to be able to express something with a very short (140 characters) characters!? WHAT is ALSO the value to use Social Media!?

Make an experiment first: try to express yourselves about a topic in a normal writing way; analyze that and try NOW to express THE same in 140 characters! YOUR grey cells are working a lot, isn’t it!? AND THAT is GOOD, YOU will find another way to express YOURSELVES in shorter words and sentences; YOU will be able to synthesize!!

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

Less talk, talk, talk and more RELEVANT information will be THE result!!! Sounds like QUALITY, isn’t it 😉

On the beginning, YOU will struggle a bit which is quite normal (I did ALSO…), but later YOU will find (after some training…) it interesting and even like it as a challenge… And BTW, if YOU can’t express it with ONLY one tweet (post on twitter), there is another possibility; check my blog post, please <===> Updated Twitter Knowledge

Learn more:

AND twitter is part of Social Media as well, like it says it already it’s social; YOU will meet OTHER people online with same interests (mostly, if well chosen followers…), different point of views (will give YOU some new ideas…) and YOU could build up a “Personal [Professional] Learning Network“, called a “PLN“. Through THIS PLN will find NEW opportunities for LEARNing as anyone learns from anybody, it’s an exchange of knowledge.
