What’s the secret of success while innovating?

I hear you screaming already: I would like to be innovative, I even have some ideas BUT I am fearing about WHAT OTHERS would say and think about!! To be honest, NEVER look about WHAT OTHERS would say, innovation is something NEW and the new will GET up from the beginning NO acceptance, apart from a few which Professional-Development is Up-To-Date, and you probably (mostly) will GET even very hard criticism because people tend for “Listening to reply and NOT for understanding”!!

With ICT in EDUcation and while being (nearly) Up-To-Date with your Professional-Development while you have read the most important books about Modern-EDUcation from renowned researchers and by being online and using Social Media, especially Twitter, you certainly “feel” what MUST change to give OUR students, learners, BEST EDUcation. DO SO, I am pushing you if necessary, the world needs people with courage, motivation, engagement to bring Modern-EDUcation farther!!

And I am NOT talking about tools, Apps, THEY are ONLY facilitators; THE main so-called tool is YOU!!! YOU are modeling the statues (your learners, students) from a raw piece to a Master-Piece because of YOUR talents, knowledge, experience, Up-To-Date Professional-Development. It’s YOUR talent, like in arts, YOUR creativity who sparkles over to the learners, students with YOUR motivation, engagement, passion…

IF NO effort is brought in, NO results will come out!!

NOW, you know the secret ingredients (it’s like cooking…) and then comes the way of the How-To, there WE need to use ALSO Social Media, especially Twitter to connect with the students, learners!! Did I say connecting with students, learners on Twitter and learning together with the whole world; an OPEN place, NOT a closed classroom!!??? Sounds strange, isn’t it!??? Well, it isn’t strange at all, as it is PracTICE for the students, learners, to GET straight in to WHAT they will get used once in the workforce. It’s actually the BEST PracTICE they can get.

As on January 2018 I just have seen ONE Twitter-Chat (if you know another one, let me know please…) WHERE students, learners (average age 20 years old) were involved and it comes from Canada, the University of Ottawa, run by Pierre LEVY. Please check below some screenshots from the transcript of the Twitter-Chat:

.

By following that Twitter-Chat one can see and analyze THE way HOW students are thinking by bringing in THEIR Critical-Thinking, that shows their learning instantly… AND, the students use as well the <===> Twitter Moments <===> to make THEIR reflection about their learning while collecting different tweets from different persons on the Twitter-Chat <===> #UOTM18 <===> and even creating blog posts about it to reflect their learning. The moments and the blogs are made outside the <===> #SchoolCocoon (school, university…) <===> and Pierre LEVY is using this practice since 3-4 years already.

[Gust MEES] I had also already created a blog post about “Reflection” in Twitter-Chats in June 2016: Update Twitter Chats: WHAT To DO BETTER!?

Start text from PJ CAPOSEY Making Education Meaningful

So, as I see it in we have two binary options – stay unfinished or be completely miserable. Let me explain, if we attempt to do the same things for kids in 2028 as we do today we will be woefully ineffective. Very rarely is someone who is ineffective at their job fulfilled by their job and happy in their professional life.

Okay, 2028 seems pretty far away. I challenge you to consider if it is really possible to make slight changes for eight years and then have a monumental shift in years nine and ten. Probably not. So, what’s the point?

The change in our world is constant. Our kids are different than they were ten years ago and will be vastly different ten years from now. Our communities are changing. Our world is fundamentally different and will continue to evolve. In education we must adjust to them and to our world (more importantly their world) or we are going to face becoming dangerously irrelevant.

So, as educators we have one choice. One option to stay relevant. One option to compete. One option to serve our kids with integrity. And perhaps most importantly, one option to be personally happy. That option is to stay unfinished. Embrace change. Love the grind. Have a deep, hard, introspective conversation with yourself that it is never going to be easier to be great at your job. And be okay with that realization.

And I hope – deep in my soul – that accepting the fact that it is never going to be easier energizes you. You were not put on this Earth to be average. None of us were. You have chosen to be a part of the best profession in the world. We have the opportunity to change lives every single day. It is an awesome responsibility, but an even more incredible opportunity.

Collaboration and Coaching
.

Introduction

This is the English version of my French blog post ===> Collaboration internationale-trucs et astuces <=== which was created in 2009. I will use this English version to create a collaboration together with other authors, where WE will bring in collaboratively OUR experiences. First author, who helped me to correct my bad English and who contributed also is Mindy KIM. You will find her contribution with the initials [MK]. Thanks Mindy.

.

International Collaboration

sharing iconTips and tricks that help you with international collaboration. Some bloggers create different blogs, with different languages, as interest of exchange of knowledge. This blog will give you tips and tricks for managing your organization, different time zones and languages, different laws, translations, support for publication, etc..

What you should know:

Some bloggers speaking different languages have a desire to share their knowledge in different languages, why not? This is a commendable initiative that deserves to be supported by a blog offering tips and tricks to manage the transmission of knowledge in different countries and especially in different languages.

Good manners, such as greeting somebody (Hello, Hi…) also and especially on Internet (on Internet it is disappearing almost), saying “Thank you” to somebody and “please” are “keywords” for showing “Respect” to each other.

In my country (Luxembourg in Europe) we even say that those words are the “keysthat open all the doors…

Different authors with different cultures are trying to meet and share their knowledge on a blog to break out the distances among themselves.

.

.

It is a bit like visiting another country, you must learn about (will be complemented by links):

Country information, including:
  • the mentality of the locals
  • Different cultures
  • customs of the country and the holidays from these countries
  • Internet laws from these countries
  • Etiquette (in general)
  • the time zone of the country
  • the favorite sport of the country
  • the country’s policy
  • interesting websites from these countries
  • national and regional gourmet menus
  • jealousy
  • Responsibility of sharing!!! Make sure that the shared articles and links are trustful and don’t contain MALWARE!!!
  • etc..
Why do I mention things that a priori have nothing at all to do with writing (create) blogs, seems weird, right?
In fact, it’s not weird at all, on reflection. As we create blogs, sooner or later we face comments, comments from bloggers, experts in different countries of ours, coupled with our mentality and knowing a little information on these countries helps facilitate the conversion and is also beneficial to create friendships. There are no boundaries between humans when they are well informed, when they have open minds, accept different points of view, and mind their own ideas and beliefs.
.

.Chat icon

Bloggers may face in the first instance (without realizing immediately):

.

.

  • jet lag
  • language: there are different expressions as learned in school. Typical expressions of countries and we do not know and / or not well or not at all (??)
  • the mentality of the people of these countries are other than ours
  • temperament of different countries, the mentality of the country “called” the “South” is more “warm”, while the mentality of the country, “said” the “North” is “cold”, misunderstood comments may be unavoidable …
  • different education
  • the educational hierarchy (my degree is higher than yours [this is also the same in our own country]
  • a different religion
  • a different policy, not all countries have democracy …
  • the living standards of people in these countries
  • the competitive spirit of a country to another (which one is better?)
  • the different characters (sympathy, antipathy)
  • etc..
  • [MK] Know how to address someone respectfully.
  • [MK] Know formal introductions in another language.

Tip: in order not to face immediately problems it is to recommend not to publish in collaborative blogs on religion and politics, because everyone has their own vision …

Many factors must be considered when one is dealing with different nationalities!
To give you leads, tips and tricks, we will begin in stages, below (the) first (s) step (s).
.
[MK] Knowing whether or not to speak formally or informally is important. In many countries how you address someone in conversation becomes the stepping stones to building a relationship. It can be off putting to address someone informally from another country. Formal introductions and formal language protocols are important to many cultures and are identifying factors of respect, cultural identity, and the effort of another person entering a new culture.
[MK] Ask questions when learning about another culture. Keying in on areas that help understand cultural norms, expectations, and differences are essential steps in building a foundation that strengthen the ability to collaborate. Thus, increasing, global interactions, collaboration, learning, and partnerships that propel ones Professional Learning Network.
.

Ethics on the internet

book-question-markOn the Internet, we users (those who use the Internet) are both a transmitter and receiver. We use the internet, this service is bi-directional (two way), and exposes us to interventions without borders. As a result we are faced with interpersonal barriers, culture, society, etc.. In order not to make missteps it is advisable to apply sincerity, traditional values of honesty, courtesy, politeness, civility, fairness, integrity, confidentiality, which are the foundations of human civilization .

Time Zones

clockFor time zones: the internet gives us lots of free sources (not always reliable either, download only from reliable sources!) to benefit from tools that make our lives easier.

Why is it important to know about the time zones?
[MK] You want to make sure your blogs and posts on Social Media are read by your visitors, right?  You want your blogs and posts on Social Media are also read by your visitors, isn’t it? Then you must also know the time where your visitors are most present on WordPress or other blogging platforms and on Social Media Twitter. This space of time also varies from one country to another, it is advisable to observe for a few weeks, only visiting at different times, these platforms in different countries for you to realize when it is the best time to post a blog (save the blog). [MK] platforms will help you realize when it is the best time to post a blog (save the blog).
.
Only after having surveyed the territory on WordPress, for example, you’ll realize that quite often (you) see a blog post every minute, even several blogs per minute. So there is certainly (not the) time to publish your blog, it will be lost faster than it has been published. We need a period of time when the publication of blogs is not so active so that your blog has a chance of being detected.
Or at home watches turning otherwise as in other countries, or that there are time differences up to 11 (eleven) hours, then it is important to know what time it is in these countries and which countries are visiting other WordPress platforms or other … That is why it is essential to install a free software that provides us with the different time zones. One such reliable tools is free software:
.
Download the software at the following URL:

Translation Tools

sharing-iconIt is advisable to bring translation tools, because very few people (those) who arrive suddenly to will write in a different language other than their mother tongue, (will need to to be able to utilize these tools).

On the internet we can find free sources that help us in this task, but these tools are only an aid. They will not be able to translate your texts completely. Many times these translations give us a good laugh, because their translations are poor quality, but it is enough to save you from a lot of work. You take the rough translation and you adjust correctly, there is still work to do, but also savings additional work.

.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of translation software:
.

On WordPress:

About WordPress, it is advisable to contact the   Scientific foreign co-authors or literary, which speak our language better than you own. It will help you translate your blog.
 .

Online Dictionaries

book-question-markAs we write in a language other than our mother tongue it is obvious that we do not find all the words that we need to write our blog (or other document), then at that time a dictionary is welcome . Of course we also find free software on the internet, including below a non-exhaustive list:

.

[MK] Consider this starting from… it is obvious that we do not find all the words that we need to write our blog…

.

Grammar Online Tools

Of course we are not perfect, far from it, especially as regards the grammatical errors and misspellings. On the internet you can also find online tools where you can check your texts, below is a list:

Responsibility Of Sharing!

programmerman2[GM] When WE are sharing articles and especially links WE MUST make sure that WE don’t share MALWARE infected stuff! WE would “infect” OTHERS computer’s (smartphones) with such an action, so be aware, please. WE should learn about the basics of Cyber Security as a GOOD Digital Citizen, which is actually NOT that difficult 😉 Please follow my FREE courses and tutorials below, please:

Special Characters

Almost every country uses different keyboards adapted to their language, they have provisions in different keys. These provisions are key:
.
  • QWERTY keyboard, used in some Francophone countries (France and Belgium)
  • QWERTY keyboard designed for English, a language without writing accents
  • QWERTZ keyboard.
When a French person/individual wants to write in German, it will not automatically create the special characters (ü, ö, ä, ß, etc.). Available on the keyboard, same thing for a German who wants to write in French, will certainly not automatically use special characters (é, è, à, ê, â, etc..). Unless, as in Luxembourg and Switzerland, where their multilingualism / French keyboards “QWERTZ” version Switzerland is used. On these keyboards there are German and French characters available on the keyboard.  And then there are also keyboards for Greek languages, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, etc..
.

It is also possible, in Windows, open the “Character” to select characters that are not present on your computer. To do this (in Windows XP), click “Start” (bottom left of the screen), followed by a click on “All Programs.” Then select “Accessories,” followed by a click on “System Tools.” A shortcut menu appears. Select “Character”.
.
Under Windows7, it’s the same …
.
special characters
.
The following screen is displayed. Choose your special character to include in your document.
At the same time you are informed about the name of the special character, and the way how you can integrate it using the “Alt” keys and the numeric keypad.
.
In our example “C CEDILLA” for the name of the special character and pressing the “Alt”key and hold down simultaneously typing the numbers “0231” on the numeric keypad only (located to the right of your keyboard), which gives by releasing the “Alt” letter “ç” key.

How Did This Blog Start?-The TEAM Explains

.

GUST-AVRIL2014-800px-2[GM]Well, an online friend on Social Media Twitter ===>  <=== and ALSO a member of my ===> PLN <=== was introducing Mindy [MK] to his ===> PLN <=== (where I belong to as well) as a NEW Twitter user and asking us ALL to give Mindy a bit help as a newcomer. I did through sharing of my blog posts and curation about Twitter and the contact to Mindy became later stronger and she was willing to learn, she was asking to learn more. A very good initiative which I couldn’t refuse as I love sharing my knowledge with others. So one moment come I was explaining most of what she wanted to know over “DM” (Direct [private] Messages) on Twitter, which was working perfectly… At that moment she wanted ALSO to know more about blogging and I gave her a little help through creating a special blog about the first steps with WordPress here ===> Creating Your First Blog Post With WordPress <===. That was the beginning, I will let Mindy [MK] explain more and especially her point of view below…

.

Mindy KIM-122x142[MK]: I came fresh from a training, where I was the only individual from a public school system, the rest were from private/independent schools. The training was about leadership, best teaching practices, pedagogy, and technology. It was nearing the end of day two, when a guest speaker presented about technology. He had a twitter, a blog, a YouTube channel, and many other tools he utilized to reach his students as well as tools for his own professional development. Unfortunately, until then I had not given much thought into using technology as a way to further my professional development. I furiously took notes and made a “to-do” list of mini-goals I wanted to put into action when the conference was over. Later that weekend I created a twitter account. Unsure of what to expect and how it would transform my professional knowledge. Within minutes I had added the few people I knew, then my phone started buzzing with sounds of others following me thanks to  ===> the only person I really knew.  Others followed me from that first interaction. I was grateful and intrigued. The next hurdle was to create a blog. Where to start? What type of blog? Who will want to read my blog?.. and many other questions ensued. That is where [GM] came in. I had found a source where I could “unload” all the unrelenting questions that I thought about, wondered, and sought advice on. At times meekly asking questions, which transformed into deep conversations sharing thoughts and ideas.

My blogs:

Dan KIRSCH[DK] An online friend ===> @knolinfos Gust MEES and I have been collaborating on several different blog topics; such as our Learn-to-learn: Digital Citizenship blog and our Global Collaboration blog; including @eduinspirations Mindy. K. I was asked if I would want to be a part of this collaboration; in which I jump at the chance!!! The professional development and collaboration I have gained through twitter and blogging with Gust MEES, Mindy K., and Mark W. have given me the inspiration to continue my practice to become the best possible educator and life-long learner that I can be!!! Through participating in twitter chats; such as the #whatisschool chat I have gained a global connection with other educators that I never thought possible. It was suggest to me to start a WordPress blog where I could continue my connections with other educators through collaboration!! I have always used edublogs as my “main” website for my students to collaborate with one another. I never thought about starting or creating my own “personal” blog to continue my own learning until I was invite by Gust MEES to collaborate in a global collaboration blog. Through many direct messages through twitter I have become part of great PLN!!! I look forward to the different avenues this blog topic will take me as I continue my growth as professional educator and life-long learner!! Currently, I have the privilege of being a member of my school districts ICT Curriculum Committee. We are rewriting & updating our ICT classes for students 6-8. Awareness While Working With 21st Century Pedagogy, Tools And Social Media

programmerman2[GM] In the above mentioned sections WE discussed the possibilities of a modern pedagogy and ALSO WE presented some solutions which of course could get extended by other solutions… BUT, isn’t there something different from traditional learning? YES, WE are using NOW the internet and learning doesn’t happen anymore ONLY in school, in the ===> SchoolCocoon <===! There are NO walls anymore as the internet breaks any borders and walls, the internet is present anywhere as far as there is a possible connection. WE are living NOW in  ===> another world <===, a world with two faces, the virtual world and the real world, where the internet (the virtual world) and the real world are influencing each other.

[GM] It isn’t enough anymore to ONLY know the pedagogy and the used 21st Century tools, also known on Twitter as “EdTech Tools“! While using the internet and services, as also tools (programs and Apps), which are connected to the internet, WE MUST accept WHAT is happening in this “virtual world“! This “Digital World” or “Virtual World” is exactly the same as in the “Real World“, there are BAD and GOOD! Actually there are a lot of dangers in the “Virtual World” where a lot of people are NOT aware about it, and there is the responsibility of Education to jump in and teach the learners about WHAT THEY have to be aware and ALSO how to protect as its BEST against: (TIP: read ONLY the text in BOLD to understand)

Collaboration-Working As A Team (Especially On Global) And Connected Through Social Media

community-jpegThe authors [GM], [MK], [DK] will comment here THEIR experiences through the adventure of global collaboration which THEY experienced.

[GM] My advice (as I am used to it since ages ===> (2002-2003) <===:

Before starting such a BIG project, YES it is a BIG one as YOU are dealing with different mentalities and cultures, is to set up rules up from the beginning to avoid BIG mistakes and not necessary stress for ALL.

This is called ===> Proactive THINKing <=== BETTER to use it as as YOU could come into situations without an issue when NOT doing it and WHO wants that!?

Concerning ===> Proactive THINKing <===: most people don’t know about WHAT it is, I will explain very shortly: deep thinking on what could happen in case of to avoid it up from the beginning. YOU could ALSO say: thinking of the “Worst case” who could happen and preparing to that it would NOT happen. OR, if YOU are smart, using Psychology for that it will happen (ONLY positive things…)! TIP: read ONLY the bold text to understand it quickly 😉

Check ALSO these links, please, who explain about “International Collaboration”:

Chapter 4

VERY IMPORTANT message for the TEAM.

Message for Mindy, Dan ===> Preparation

Some advice and rules:

Hi Mindy, Dan: I gave You the status “Editor” for this blog post. Please use ONLY this blog post for OUR “Collaboration and Coaching”!!! ====> EDUcation-Collaboration And Coaching | The Future – Private <=== Don’t touch anything else as when YOU are even seeing other things (my blog posts and…). ONLY THIS blog post, thanks!

Here are YOUR possibilities:

I will give You some directions through messages marked in “brown“, as this text. WE will communicate this way. You do the same, please: using “brown” text for messages and questions…

If YOU think that something SHOULD get brought in MORE in this “brown” text, feel FREE to do so! BUT, then please use YOUR initials, such as [MK], [DK], thanks.

Once You have read the text, I suggest that You create an “unpublished” (Private mode) post on YOUR account where You copy the “brown” text into and save it for following and reminding 😉 Once done, please let me know and I will delete the “brown” text and save at new this post. So WE will have a good communication and the text will look later OK (when published “Public”) for the readers.

ALSO, so You will have saved a copy of ALL OUR interactions, which could be useful for You and YOUR LEARNers, maybe thinking of as using later that preparation for a new blog post of YOUR OWN on the #HowTo which WE could integrate also in this blog post (ONLY one link…) as part of YOUR OWN experience... It is IMPORTANT to know “THE way” on How To YOU did it for YOUR further “adventures” with OTHERS on collaboration…

Some links who might be helpful for You:

At the bottom of this blog post You will see the keywords which WE were talking about: these will help us to NOT lose the line what WE want to do 😉 Feel FREE to add some new when they come out from YOUR brain…

Try first, please, to bring in YOUR insights in the mentioned ===> [MK], [DK], in “brown” text. Later You certainly will have something to suggest, which would be welcome of course. BUT, focus, please first on the mentioned 😉 Otherwise You could lose the topic(s) ===> advice <=== 😉

A good idea might be ALSO to post sometimes Tweets about the #HowTo YOUR learning is advancing (as well as in this post), so OTHERS will get little snippets, step by step, what is happening through a such way WE are doing 😉

The ===> Learning By Doing <=== is something which I have taught since 2002 already and especially with “Collaboration”, the WE is a win-win situation and the “Coaching” (NOT anymore Teaching) is a WINNER!

So, as I am the “ADMINISTRATOR”, I will be able to interact in this blog post and I will adjust some text, ideas and…

===> Please DON’T delete the “brown” text as I will do that when I think that it is necessary as “ADMINISTRATOR”, thanks! <===

One more IMPORTANT thing ===> authors SHOULD wait while seeing “locked” as it means that someone else is in “EDIT” mode ;), see screenshot below, please, thanks 😉

.

Multi-Authors

.

Author on EDIT mode

.

WE are multi-authors on this blog post, so WE MUST take care of each other and being respectful. WHEN YOU see a message similar as above, please DON’T click on “Take over” as that author is actually on “EDIT” mode and doing his work, thanks! Be patient, please… OR, as I did with Mindy: I gave her a friendly “DM” (Direct Message [Private Message]) over Twitter to let her know that I MUST quickly made an additional ADD, which after finishing I will let her know when finished and THEN I go out of “EDITING”, so that she can continue with her “EDITING” again. Thanks for respecting this… And thanks to Mindy to give his “Administrator” the time to do this, appreciated.

===> WE are using the “DM” on Twitter <=== for OUR communication, learn more below:

.

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01Very IMPORTANT: DON’T use any code, HTML and similar in the blog!!! If YOU want so, please contact me and WE will discuss about the possibility, anyway I would check the code before!

.

.

===> WE are neither talking about religion and politics, please, as they differ from each ones beliefs, WE respect THEM, BUT WE avoid talking about it to. <===

TIP: WHEN YOU see that someone else is in “EDIT” mode, so prepare YOUR text in a Word document (or similar) during the time that the author is editing. YOU will later ONLY need to make a copy&paste & formatting in “Justify” and YOU will lose NO time 😉

Let’s GO for it 😉

PS: WE will post in “Justify” as You might have found out 😉 I am used to that, so please follow, thanks. ALL my posts are on “Justify”, so WE have to continue like that, thanks.

Just write and format on “Justify” please, I will have a look later on #HowTo get it BETTER presented, don’t worry. Let it GO, let it FLOW… I will look on the rest, give me some TRUST, please, thanks.

======> DON’T worry about how the blog post is looking actually, I will CHANGE later. Some TOPICS need to get placed differently, coming later… First “Let it GO, let it FLOW and later the fine-tuning…

Slowly, but surely WE will go through it 😉 Rome wasn’t build in one day!

Visible Learning

programmerman2The author [MK] was communicating with me [GM] over “DM” (Direct Messages) over Social MediaTwitter“, a bit like a “Chat” where WE exchanged OUR different point of views (mostly common) about collaboration and coaching. [MK] is authorized to use this “private exchange” to create a new blog on her own, where she will add ALSO her notes to document her learning and her insights

.

  • [MK] My blog:  http://kimmindy7.wordpress.com
  • [MK] Establishing roles, responsibilities, and a common language are key. A common language allows everyone to have the same foundation in which to build upon.
  • [MK] Communicate, Communicate, Communicate ===> TRUE open communication is key. Especially when various levels of experience are at play.
    • [GM] Remember every time the letter “C” in “ICT“, which means “Communication“.
  • [MK] Immediate and constant feedback are essential.  Feedback helps maintain focus along with eliminating any ambiguity within the group.
  • [MK] Consider the overall purpose. Is it to educate myself, individuals, other professionals? Let that be your guide to reach the targeted audience. Uncommon language or terms is confusing and will turn your audience OFF.
  • [GM] Mindy, please report ALSO about taking a break sometimes, very important 😉 Thank You.

The participants (The TEAM)

community-jpeg.

Actually on July, 10th 2014 WE are three persons working together to learn from each other through Social Media Twitter, which WE will document here to give YOU, dear readers and LEARNers, the opportunity to learn ALSO from us.

To make sure that YOU will know WHO wrote WHAT, WE will use the following:

[GM]: Gust MEES (me, the ADMINISTRATOR of this blog post)

More about me: I am a retired “ICT Instructor” since January 1st, 2014. I gave courses to adults, seniors, teachers, elementary classes, as ALSO sometimes personal coaching to youth from the secondary Education. I will try to create a new blog post about my experiences over the years, who could help YOU as well.  BUT I am very active on Social Media and I give FREE courses online (a constructive pastime) about EDUcation and Cyber-Security. I was a pioneer in my own country as I started already in 2002 together with my LEARNers what WE are doing here now together.

I am an ===> autodidact <===! And ALSO a ===> LifeLongLEARNing person <=== and this since more than 45 years already, always loved to learn 😉

ALSO I was an awarded author on “Google Knol” during four (4) years, service who is NOW (since May 1st, 2012) discontinued and on the “Google Grave Yard“. I had about 1.4 Million page views 😦 and was author of the week in 2009.

.

Gust MEES-Knol-Author-Of-The-Week-2009

.

I was working together with +/- twelve (12) different authors from around the globe, which WE NEVER met before and creating blog posts together. It was a great experience which I loved. Thus meaning, I have a lot of experience through the years which WE will use together in this blog post.  More info about me on the bottom of this blog post.

 Some of my collaborative blogs:

I am online since 1998 and I read a lot of books and mostly magazines. I am multilingual, speaking six languages and understanding eight. I am living in Luxembourg (Europe), a small country with ONLY 537k inhabitants and a population of  44.5 % of foreign nationality (2013). Thus meaning: I am used to live together with different cultures and mentalities, which is a great help when connecting on Social Media with other cultures.

More about my country Luxembourg (Europe):

My books selection (EDUcation):

I created ALSO in 2004, that was a global innovation and STILL is, a theater piece about ===> LEARNing the basics of Cyber Security through a Theater piece <===, le “Théâtre Interactiv et Pédagogique” (T.I.P.), check below:

.

[MK]: Mindy KIM

userfredericmoser01[MK]: More about me: I worked in a variety of settings. I completed my undergraduate degree with an internship at Martin Technology Academy. where I was an Odyssey of The Mind coach as well.   My first year of teaching was as Lead Preschool Teacher at Christian County Head Start, before I transferred into the public school system in Clarksville-Montgomery County. Where I taught Special Education K-1 and this year I will be a General Education Kindergarten Teacher. I try to develop my professional learning by doing and experiencing different settings within education. I went to a week-long conference at Vanderbilt where I was 1-24 chosen, making up individuals from 10 different states. I continue to volunteer my time with Clarksville Association for Down Syndrome by helping to raise money, raise awareness,  and help bring more of the surrounding community to events hosted by the organization.  I am the Morale Committee Chair at my school. The committee and I plan events to help boost morale, plan collaborative events, and to spread well-being throughout the school year. Future goals are to study leadership and education policy to better understand the demands on constraints placed on all individuals working in education and how to make the field better for all.

[DK] Dan Kirsch

Greetings from Patrick Henry Middle School! My name is Dan Kirsch. I teach courses in Information/Communications & Technology (ICT) and Career/Technical Education (CTE) for students in grades 6-8. I completed my undergraduate degree in Education from Dakota State University in Madison, SD (USA). My first 3 years of teaching was in a rural public school in Chamberlain, SD (USA). My duties included teaching K-6 Physical Education & 5-8 Middle School Technology classes. The opportunity to attend graduate school to obtain my Master’s Degree led me to South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD (USA) where I obtained my MS in Athletic Administration. During graduate school I obtained a part-time teaching position within the Sioux Falls School District in Sioux Falls, SD (USA). After graduate school I was given a full-time teaching position at Patrick Henry Middle School in the Sioux Falls School District, which is where I currently reside and love every minute of it!!! In the last couple of years, I have gained a ton of knowledge through twitter chats and global collaborations, which as led me to this opportunity to be part of this collaboration blog! I look forward to collaborating and communicating as much information as possible to help PLN and myself as a teacher to continue on the path of Life-Long Learning!

TEAM’s Experience During This Collaboration And Personal Coaching

[MK]:thumbs up WHAT I learned:

      • Development of a common language, that enabled OPEN sharing of ideas, experiences, knowledge.
      • Broadened understanding of concepts students need in the 21 Century to be successful.
      • Deepened understanding and professional growth, using what I learned and applying it to interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
      • Building mindfulness of the constant changes in education and adapting to meet the needs of students.
      • Critical thinking means: Critical self-reflection, self-analysis <== BEFORE taking action

.

.

.

[GM] sharing-iconApart from the already published experiences from me here, there is one essential point to highlight as well:

      • THE LEARNing rhythm and the ENERGY of the participants! One size doesn’t fit it ALL! Some have more ENERGY as OTHERS and as a TEAM WE need to adapt ALSO to this as a TEAM! It is IMPORTANT to let know the TEAM when someone is feeling out of ENERGY, which is human and NORMAL! WE ALL have different ways of how OUR life is organized and this shouldn’t get changes, so let the leading person know this and when that person is clever and professional enough, a break of one day will be offered to the WHOLE TEAM. We are humans and NOT robots 😉 BTW: I am HAPPY sometimes to get a day off as well 😉
      • I know that this isn’t easy to admit, BUT WE MUST do it as:
        • as otherwise WE could face a BURNOUT and that isn’t good for OUR HEALTH, nor for the LEARners as they would suffer from it as well. I call this ===> Taking care of OUR own PROFESSIONAL HYGIENE  <=== Find below, please some helpful articles:
        • BURNOUT and Collaboration fatigue

[DK]: Dan, YOUR text in here, please, thanks.

Collaboration With Parents And Coaching

community-jpegIn modern schools there are ALSO parent meetings where the parents get involved, they get noticed about how THEIR kids progress and WHAT about THEY can help for BEST learning of THEM. This is a modern concept of collaboration between the school inside and the outside of the school. It should be a partnership. Here below some articles who explain in detail:

.

.

WHAT YOU Should Know Up From The Beginning When Coaching And On Global Collaboration

programmerman-animated

          • There is a MUST to establish some rules and guidelines UP from the beginning as WE did in this blog post, or as Mindy [MK] said: Establish a common language. [GM] This common language should be “Respect, Tolerance, Adapting, Empathy, Social behavior…” to avoid mistakes.YOU  are dealing with different mentalities and cultures, so avoid BIG mistakes and not necessary stress for ALL.
          • When coaching:
            • [MK] Immediate and constant feedback are essential. When possible set up times when feedback is given and time can be devoted to multiple exchanges to express ideas, questions, and overall thoughts. This helps maintain the integrity and focus, especially when working in different time zones, states, and from various experience backgrounds.

.

.

Positive Side Effects / LEARNers Want To LEARN New Languages

book-question-markWell, I was surprised when coaching and working together with some educators as suddenly I got told that THEY wanted to learn new languages. This after THEY saw my Twitter posts (Tweets) where I had some conversations with other multilingual educators, where WE discussed on the same Twitter thread in Luxembourgish, German, French and English; switching the languages in one second time. This is a valuable occasion, especially as with the internet one finds FREE professional courses, which WE will present here below:

Below more from ===> http://themindunleashed.org/2014/07/12-dozen-places-educate-online-free.html <===:

.

FOREIGN AND SIGN LANGUAGES

BBC Languages – Teach yourself a new spoken language online.
American Sign Language Browser – Teach yourself sign language online.
Livemocha – Start learning a new language online for free.
Learn10 – Gives you a language learning habit that’s hard to kick. 10 new words; everywhere, every day.
One Minute Languages – Learn a new language via podcasts that are updated regularly.
Mango Languages – Over 100 lessons, shown to you in PowerPoint style with interstitial quizzes, to move you through any language without cracking a book.

Authors (TEAM’s) Requests

The authors (The TEAM), as being involved in a teaching profession, must consistently update THEIR knowledge for a growth of THEIR ===> Professional Development <===. So, here below what is requested by them and WHO from the TEAM could provide them that coaching about it.

[GM]: Mindy [MK] wanted to know about how to create a blog. WE were discussing about it and I created a new blog post about the how to, check below, please:

[GM]: Mindy [MK] would like to learn about HTML.

[GM] I will start soon a new blog about ===> HTML for beginners <=== A very simple step by step for the practice on how to use in the blogs, ONLY the necessary, NO complete course… So, through this blog I will coach [MK] on the same way as WE did already in this blog post.

.

.

Authors Time Zones

clockWE use this below to organize at its BEST for communication, Time Zones are sometimes very embarrassing.

 .

When it is 05.51 PM in Luxembourg (Europe), then it is:

  • 11:51 AM in USA/ATLANTA (GA)
  • 11:51 AM in USA/CLARKSVILLE-TENNESSEE

Is your Professional Development Up-To-Date?

programmerman2I think that “Is MY Professional Development Up-To-Date?” is the first question which you need to ask yourselves! You can ONLY give BEST and QUALITY courses when knowing about the latest knowledge in a 21st Century Education. But ===> HOW TO know this? <===

That’s a question I am getting asked very often from Teachers and Teacher-Students around the world through my Social Media presence on Twitter and I must say what I see on a global base doesn’t make me feel really happy! Lots of teachers around the globe are tweeting, which I encourage to do as much as possible by joining ALSO a so called “PLN“, a “Personal Learning Network“, but ONLY a few shows a real understanding, competencies, about what they are doing; even the so called “Edu-Stars” in certain countries! So, to take away some misunderstanding from the above said, I don’t make teacher-bashing! I ONLY will show how difficult it is to follow to be up-to-date ==> Nobody Is Perfect! <==, me neither! It’s an analyzing from my daily Social Media connections… The CHANGE is very quick and ALL of us have problems to follow that quick ALSO! That is WHY it is so IMPORTANT to learn on a daily base to be still able not missing the train 😉 [my advice]! ===> Life Long Learning! <===

And didn’t WE forget something in the above mentioned!? YES, WE did! When working with computersSmartphonesTablets and any device connecting to the Internet WE have to consider ALSO the aspect of Cyber-Security and Internet-Safety! And what about “Bring Your Own Device“, called also “BYOD ===> Twitter Hashtag = #BYOD <===

Sounds strange to YOU!? It shouldn’t as YOU have to accept that any Technology present and certainly also in the future requires Safety and Security knowledge! Especially the Technology who is connecting to the Internet!

Why!???

sharing-iconOnline learning, e-Learning, m-Learning and BYOD are interconnected in many ways with the Real-World, both are influencing each other! By sharing information with others WE  must also take care about WHAT WE are sharing!

This MUST be known, especially concerning Cyber-Security! I will explain in a different course (in depth) ===> why Cyber-Security is a MUST in 21st Century Learning and Teaching <===, for the moment feel free to visit my following FREE courses to get an overview:

Ideas for “Professional Development”

.

thumbs upRecently WordPress introduced a new Plug-In. [Start Text from EDUDEMIC] The new WordPress plugin from WooThemes (a popular WordPress premium theme provider) lets you start up your own online school with ease. It’s as simple as installing a WordPress plugin. The actual content and other school-y stuff is, of course, up to you. But the technical stuff is taken care of by this new plugin. [End Text from EDUDEMIC]

.

.

SO, my idea behind that NEW plugin is that teachers with a good knowledge HELP other teachers with their “Professional Development” by creating such a platform! THINK about it and use the “Social Learning” factor in spreading the word on Twitter 😉

BTW: Did You Know that WordPress is providing ALSO a Template called “WordPress Annotum” with which it is possible to collaborate with multi-authors, even on an academic way!? Check out the link(s) below to learn more:

You Need To Be An Expert On Learning Before Teaching!

.

A Curator Is An Expert Learner-L2L

.

The BEST teachers are the teachers who are the BEST LEARNERS, that is NOT a secret anymore and it is the TRUTH! Somebody who knows about “Learning To Learn” is able to forward ALSO that precious knowledge, as in my eyes Learning To Learn” is the MOST IMPORTANT knowledge!

Important quotes about the above:

  • The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a teacher. Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) American author, editor and printer.
  • It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.” (Seneca the Younger)
  • I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think. – Socrates
  • Education is what remains when we have forgotten all that we have been taught.

George Savile, Marquis of Halifax (1633-1695) English statesman and author.

  • The whole object of education isto develop the mind. The mind should be a thing that works. Sherwood Anderson (1876–1941) American novelist and short story writer.
  •  Education … has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading.

    G. M. Trevelyan (1876-1962) British historian

  • You can lade a man up to th’ university, but ye can’t make him think.  Finley Peter Dunne (1867—1936) U.S. author, writer and humorist.
  • Teachers open the door, you enter by yourself  Chinese proverb.

I don’t have that much time to update my Professional Development!?

Are You Committed Enough to Invest in Yourself?

sharing-iconThat’s a question which you have to ask yourself, read the following for more information: [Start Text from Are You Committed Enough to Invest in Yourself?]  ===> A 9-to-5 career, if that is your model, is a recipe for career failure. <===

Because of the constant change that is swirling around all of us and our organizations, it does not matter where you are. We are all in the middle of the storm. And by the way, when I mention the negatives of being a 9-to-5 person, I am not talking about having to be a workaholic instead. I am talking about being committed to what YOU chose as a profession.   [End Text from Are You Committed Enough to Invest in Yourself?]

Why Letting Go of the Past is So Difficult

globe-pcMost of us, so called OLDIES Teachers, I am one of them (BTW: I am 58 by writing this [2013]), have big problems to adapt to the NEW! I don’t know at ALL, why!? I am a Life Long Learner and so I am prepared for ALL of what is NEW and I don’t fear to learn more, actually I love to learn to give my BEST knowledge to my learners!

SO, this told, I invite YOU to read this psychological article, which I think is very important for YOU to understand a bit he “hidden” behind, do so please, thanks!

..

.

SO, What is THE Real Change!?

In preparation… Actually ONLY key phrases, will go deeper later…

1) Practice, NOT anymore ONLY Theory, but more Practice is a MUST in the 21st Century while using devices with a computer included!

2) Collaboration with the learners and ALSO with other teachers and principals is required!

3) Win-Win Situation between teachers and learners…

4) Less of Hierarchy, where it means the fear of some teachers to lose power over the students when being a coach…

5) Go away from Linear-Learning, NOT A-Z while using A-B-C-D-E…-Z, use A-Z-K-B and so on as with ICT one can combine different knowledge in one course by time…

.

KEYWORDS FOR THIS FREE COURSE and what you will learn:

“Knowledge is a treasure, but practice is the key to it.”

.

YOU will learn about WHAT YOU should know to become a great teacher:

===> All the possible quality resources where YOU can learn on YOUR OWN pace as a self-learner (autodidact), some ideas to think about for a BETTER and quickest way to get the teachers on the TOP of “Professional Development” Up-To-Date” Level! <===

AND: THE MOST IMPORTANT when working with ICT ===> basic knowledge of Cyber-Security!

Basics of Cyber-Security Practice, Proactive Thinking, Cyber-Hygiene, hygiene, Awareness, motivation, engagement, heroes, Security-Scouts, critical thinking, stay out of the box, adapt to new technologies, be aware of the malware, nobody is perfect, knowing the dangers and risks, responsibility, responsibility of School, responsibility of Education, responsibility of IT-Admin, responsibilities of BYOD users, Apple insecurity, Insecurity of Apps, Principals responsibilities, Mobile Device Management (MDM), Mobile Application Management (MAM), risks of BYOD, BYOD-Policy, IT-Security Infrastructure, Teacher-Parents Meeting, Cyberwar, Cyberwarfare, Government, Internet-Safety, IT-Security knowledge basics, UK govt encourages insurers to reward good IT security…

  • The weakest link in the Security Chain is the human! If you don’t respect certain advice you will get tricked by the Cyber-Criminals!

===> NOBODY is perfect! A security by 100% doesn’t exist! <===

===> “Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” – Marie Curie – <===

.

Protecting the organization’s network and its data from attack and misuse requires more than just a BYOD mentality; establishing secure, mobile-enabled operations requires a mobility access control program that includes corporate-provisioned, approved employee- and partner-owned devices as well as unmanaged guest devices.

Learning IT-Security

.

Possible instructions for educators on how they can work together with the learners. Knowing the tools for 21st Century Learning is primordial to give quality courses. One very important knowledge who needs to get taught is “Critical Thinking“; it brings out also new ideas and the courage to become an engager and helps to try to build a better world in both worlds: “Real World” and “Virtual World” (Internet)!

.

Teaching “Critical Thinking” to your students and learners is a MUST for a world who is changing very fast (sometimes too fast…) so that a lot of people can’t follow anymore… But by knowing “Critical Thinking” people would be catching up more quick, so very important!!!

.

===> Critical Thinking is a catalyst when well used together with Social Medias! <===

When talking about Critical-Thinking then automatically we should talk also about responsibilities! Find out more below…

What should get be taught and learned more in 21st Century while using ICT?

.

Chatting, talkingBeing online since 1998 and giving courses about ICT more than 10 years the practice and my online excursions show me that IT-Security and Internet-Safety are not yet taught enough. Seriously I think there is a need to talk and teach about existing laws in different countries and show the learners that they have not ONLY rights but also responsibilities; teachers the same for YOU 😉

.

HOW COULD THAT BE IN PRACTICE???

help-books-aj.svgajash01-1
First of all I recommend you to read some books to understand, I recommend books from Howard GARDNER and Daniel GOLEMAN.
.
.
  • 5 Minds For The Future (Howard GARDNER)  to understand what the world needs for abilities fom students in 21st Century
  • The Disciplinary Mind: the mastery of major schools of thought, including science, mathematics, and history, and of at least one professional craft.
  • The Synthesizing Mind: the ability to integrate ideas from different disciplines or spheres into a coherent whole and to communicate that integration to others.
  • The Creating Mind: the capacity to uncover and clarify new problems, questions and phenomena.
  • The Respectful Mind: awareness of and appreciation for differences among human beings and human groups.
  • The Ethical Mind: fulfillment of one’s responsibilities as a worker and as a citizen.
.

When having read the recommended books YOU will understand much better what are the actions to take and certainly there will be also some new ideas from YOU 😉

.

So, what does this show us!?

Attention Logo

        1. There isn’t enough information from Education (or too theoretical) around about how to get protected
          • Why? Perhaps teachers and educators are Mac users and not prepared for such a serious task!? Lack of REAL knowledge about IT-Security!
          • Lack of IT-Security knowledge in general, so how can one be able then to bring over the right knowledge!?
          • Learners don’t feel it necessary, why? Bad teaching, sorry! Not ONLY a society problem as some say! A teacher doesn’t give up till he finds the right way that it will get understood even that he must learn himself some new stuff to make it more interesting for the learners!
        2. There isn’t enough information from Government to adults and seniors around about how to get protected (or too theoretical)
        3. When courses are giving from Education and Government they are too theoretical and don’t give the necessary practice to learners for protecting their computers
        4. IT-Security can ONLY have best results when done with practical workshops!
          • ===> Confucius, Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand. – Confucius, 450 B.C.
        • Education and Government are publishing with 21st Century Technology but still doing it with 20th Century knowledge! They have to improve and to employ people with the necessary practice knowledge and skills!
        • There is a need to prepare learners more to the dangers of Internet! Especially against Scam!
        • Learners and adults need to know the laws in Internet!
        • There is a need to create so called “IT Security Help Points (Places)” where people with practice knowledge and skills are available to give advice on the place and wherevisitors can bring their computers to check for vulnerabilities and infections, as I did as a volunteer, but these people should get payed for it!
      1. Ideas for a more secure Internet (in English)

.

        • What do YOU think about people who are walking door by door and trying if a door is open and enter into the house!? And worth, who are looking for other holes were they can enter into the house!?
          • Port Scanning and scanning web sites where YOU are not the owner of it are not allowed and punished by laws!
        • Imagine YOU would have an exhibition of your talented pictures, drawings, books, texts, sculptures and… in a big exhibition place (Internet); someone is visiting this exhibition and takes your talented work away with him!? Of course without paying YOU for this nor to tell YOU that he did so and that later on this person would make his own exhibition somewhere else pretending that it is his own work and even earn money with it!? What would be YOUR reaction!?  Do YOU know that this is what is called “Copyright“!?
        • Do YOU educate YOUR children and learners at home about bad and good? Do YOU educate them not to steal and not to break in other houses? Do YOU explain YOUR children and learners the laws and also the terms “prison” + “jail”? In virtual life (Internet) there are also laws and rules, explain them also to YOUR children and learners!
        • Do YOU educate YOUR children and learners to become good citizen? Do the same in #virtuallife (Internet) so that they will become good eCitizen, called also Digital Citizen!
        • Someone who doesn’t have the knowledge to use his computer (the vehicle in virtual life/Internet) is a potential danger for the COMMUNITY!!!
        • Protect YOUR children and learners by telling them the laws in Internet to avoid that they will become Cyber-criminals! Show them some practical examples about arrested people who thought that they would be invisible on Internet such as:
        • Do YOU know who is profiting from such a lack of knowledge and naivety!? Cyber-crime is, they use YOUR computer to earn money, funny isn’t it!??? Wake up!!!

chatting, speaking, sharingBeing online since 1998 and giving courses about ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) more than 10 years, the practice and my online excursions show me that IT-Security and Internet-Safety are not yet taught enough. Best practice example is that from 100 computers (Windows) there was only one (1) who was correctly secured and didn’t contain any malware, only some cookies… In my private life when going out and talking with people there comes mostly of time out the discussion about IT-Security with people who I know and others who are following the discussion, and when knowing through discussion that I have good knowledge about IT-Security they ask me also for advice

.

So, with the consent of the owner of these Cafés, Pub’s I arranged an appointment with these people and I checked their computers (Windows machines) in these places while the owner and other present customers could have a look on how I did it and where I explained them also why and how malware is penetrating the computer, by also showing them later on How-To protect their computers. Customers were also allowed to ask questions, where I gave them the links of my free courses and tutorials… That’s the positive part of my so called “on the field adventures and practice” where customers were youth as also adults and seniors…

.

The negative one is that from +/- 30 computers and Laptops I checked there was NO ONE who was secure and ALL of them were infected with malware, even one was acting as a malware server!!!

        • Can YOU drive a car (and this also safely) ONLY by getting theoretical courses and advice? YOU would surprise me, seriously, a BIG LOL for that 😉 So how YOU will expect that someone could surf secure with his computer as it is “visually seen” the “vehicle” with whom users are driving on the “Data High Way” (Internet)!????
        • Would YOU allow somebody who doesn’t have the knowledge about how-to use the breaks (IT-Security) of a car and the traffic rules (Internet-Safety) to take part of the traffic in public in real life? But that’s what is happening actually in virtual life (Internet)! Think about, please 😉
        • Someone who doesn’t have the knowledge to use his computer (the vehicle in virtual life/Internet) is a potential danger for the COMMUNITY!!!
        • Do YOU know who is profiting from such a lack of knowledge and naivety!? Cybercrime is, they use YOUR computer to earn money, funny isn’t it!??? Wake up!!!

Work-Sheet Teachers Best Practices/HowTo

Work-Sheet Teachers Best Practices/HowTo

Possible instructions for educators on how they can work together with the learners…

Knowing the tools for 21st Century Learning is primordial to give quality courses. Taking GOLD DUST as an good practice example who is an interdisciplinary and interactive 21st century textbook. It works on the basis of the “Papillon”-method- a new system of education on the basis of ancient wisdom and modern research.
By using the “Papillon” method learners get a mix from structur (text of the virtual world) and freedom (Internet).

The preoccupation with key words (the penetration at the depth central themes) pays for itself in an acceleration of apprehension, and not only during school but for the entire life.

Particularly suitable for team- and project work. The role of the teacher is being transformed. He is providing the direction and ensures the point of reference while the Internet becomes the learning space and the student can work independently. The teacher will play the role of a coach…

Due to the switch between digital and traditional work methods, the productive capacity to reflect and the joy the students experience from experimentation as well as the ability to critically assess the media are stimulated and promoted. Unique learning success becomes possible in this sense by combining technical affinity and the desire to read.

 .

Teamwork, sharing tools with learners, MindMap, learning to create a “playlist in YouTube (if not already known), learning to create themselves their own learning content, that are only some good examples on how a teaching person could prepare his courses. The teaching person could create together with the learners a playlist in YouTube with the presented videos in the course, creating a Channel for that school, class and course and let the learners help to create it by choosing maybe also themselves new videos to integrate…

By this video the teaching person could use the opportunity as well to explain the learners what are trusted content and what not, a short introduction… Show them that by a simple add-on in their browser they will find what trusted content is, example here below who takes only a couple of minutes to explain and also only a couple of minutes to install it…

WOT: Web Of Trust demonstration

.

.
.
Why to do it on that way??? Any person looks for profit, so give your students (learners) an opportunity to get profit out from it for their real life, e.g. YouTube playlist… Let your brain work to find other similar “tools” which they can benefit also in real life, success is guaranteed… Try also to combine different knowledge, e.g. talk also about Security when working on Internet, show some useful Tips and Tricks that not everyone knows, that is welcomed knowledge for the students (learners)… If yourself don’t have that knowledge, ask other teaching persons to give the courses in a Team-Teaching manner, thus meaning that their will be two teaching persons for one course (needs planning)…

Teaching for 21st Century…

.

.

By this manner you share all together your knowledge also with other persons and learners by knowing the tools could create themselves their own content. Some of them would create other content for their own learning style than without that the teaching person needs to tell them, they learn also than to be creative and independent… The teaching person could later on, when the learners know the new tools, even start a competition in the class: creating the best content for a certain course which will motivate the learners

[GM]: Technical advice: as teaching persons know in advance when courses about “Astronomy, Earth, Geography, Geology, History and… will get taught so they could planning on the beginning of the year an excursion to a planetarium, a zoo and other scientific places…

Motivate your learners the day of the excursion and/or visit of a museum, planetarium and other interesting places to take photos each (only when allowed in museums…), those photos would get used later on from the learners to publish in a Word document, a Microsoft Publisher document, a Scribus document, a blog, by using Knol… where the learners will learn to publish their photos and to write their own feelings of such a day…

Need ideas on how to do??? Please have a look here on how such publications could be done by using Knol:

.
.

Show them some FREEWARE tools such as PhotoScape where they learn to make photo editing and where they have also the possibilities to create different Photo Presentations, e.g. here below:

.
.
That are “tools” which they profit also for private life, so they will learn with fun and you prepare them for 21st Century publishing and learning, easy to integrate in your courses when knowing yourself to handle it… 😉
.
.
The teaching person needs to have a good knowledge about possible 21st Century tools to well prepare his courses to make them interesting for his learners, fun and success is guaranteed…

“Knowledge is easy (in some way [copy&paste]) to forward. Forwarding competences needs that the teaching person has also competences”. (Gust MEES)

You could (should) also using publishing software such as Microsoft Publisher and/or Scribus together with your learners, let me explain why…
.

Example: when making an excursion with your learners and/or visiting an exhibition so there are photos taken from the teaching person(s) and maybe also from some learners as usual. Use this photos in a special course when talking again about the lived experience and let your learners write their own lived in a knol and/or in a special document such as Microsoft WordOpen OfficeMicrosoft Publisher or Scribus, where they can embed then the photos and write their own text and impressions. Give them that possibility to do and later on you discuss about the different impressions from your learners…

Give them a guide and critics about what they wrote and show them also a different way of thinking, discuss about different ways of expression and tell them about virtues and critical thinking. On such “writings” you have the possibility to bring in critical thinking and virtues, use it to make your learners become “critical thinkers” and creative thinkers also, both are very close, closer as you might think 😉

Motivate them for their good work, but tell them also (when needed) that they could bring in more “critical” words and phrases, encourage them even to do so… Tell them that they will not get punished for it and that even you encourage them to do it, their is a need for it. Learners should get encouraged to think critical minded… They will need this virtue in their professional life, so prepare them for it!!!

A good way for learners to learn critical thinking is certainly the analyzing of the lyrics of their loved songs, these lyrics could be analyzed for nearly every song by the FREEWARE program Chart Lyrics 1.0.5.0 who could get downloaded on Sourceforge.net.

Here below a screenshot to show you, talk with your learners and analyze the lyrics, make them think about what they listen to…

Using Google Docs And Saving Money…

.

By using FREE online Office applications such as Google docs you will save a lot of money, no need to buy licences from Microsoft. Also is Google docs in the so called “cloud“, thus meaning that the service is available only online. Teaching people and learners can have access anywhere in the world (internet connexion provided…) and at any time…

Using Curation Tools, such as…

.

A new trend is actually to “curate“, thus meaning to collect your favorite web sites and to present them to the Internet Community.

Introduction to Teaching in 21st Century

gears iconTeaching in 21st Century is becoming a challenge actually for teaching-people, not everybody has the knowledge about new teaching-technologies (Tools…) and new teaching-education, especially not teaching persons with a certain age, so let us try in this knol to propose on HowTo this could get “learned” and also on HowTo the teaching-people could work “together” with their learners (students) with 21st Century knowledge

.
A very BIG change for teaching-people. They have now also to go away from teaching the old way, it is not anymore the teaching person who is the “BOSS” in the classroom, there is no “BOSS” anymore. Teaching people and learners will work “Together” on a “win-win situation“, like two gears (as shown in the “icon”  up the text here) to make the learning process go forward… Teaching-people should also forward to their learners Learning to Learn.
.

Don’t forget also the social aspects of your learners, very important!!! Please have a look here and think about it: Luxembourg students are reaching burnout. [GM]: Luxembourg (my country) does a lot for such situations, check out to learn more CPOS.
.
The author has given courses himself since eight (8) years (2010) based on Howard GARDNER‘s andDaniel GOLEMAN‘s  knowledge to seniors, adults and also youth and classrooms from K-3 to K-12 and he had a very positive feedback from teachers (K-3 to K-12) and the other learnersLearning who makes fun when well organizedThe teaching person needs to make a good preparation and he needs to know the possible tools and the habits of digital age nativesAnd taught than the learner gets interested and learns more and better, a big progress.

Are You On The Path To 1:1???

Source of the article below: Are You On The Path To 1:1?
sharing iconStudents should get prepared for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship by offering a challenging, relevant curriculum and varied activities in a safe environment. In his book Education NationMilton Chen calls 1:1 access “the digital civil right of every student to participate in his or her own education.”  I could not agree more and if we truly care about our students, then we will toss aside our anxiety and remember our primary role as educators to prepare our students for what they will face when they leave our schools. Since the world outside our doors is changing at a faster rate than any time in history, we should be seeing some shifts within our walls as well.

“Kids between the ages of 8 and 18 spend 11.5 hours a day using technology — whether that’s computers, television, mobile phones, or video games – and usually more than one at a time. That’s a big chunk of their 15 or 16 waking hours.”

What is New In 21st Century Teaching And Learning???

thumbsupnathaneady01It is not anymore the teacher (teacher, professor, educator, instructor, coach…) who is the most important person. The person who teaches (teacher, professor, instructor…) will act as a coach. Thus meaning: it is not the teaching person who is the most important, but the learner. The teaching person observes the learner (that is what we learned anyway as we followed pedagogical courses), the expression of his body while the learner is working on his project, the teaching person observes also what the learner says and also the rhythm of his voice, this gives us a feedback on how well the learner is doing and than the teaching person guides the learner.
A project, which ever one in ICT  should get made by “learning by doing“. Learners should get encouraged to make faults, unusual but the best way to learn… Remember: when we were kids we need also to learn to walk. We were falling a lot of times and that hurts. So we remembered it, the same for courses “learning by doing“, making faults and mistakes will get remembered by the brain not to do anymore so… The learning process goes further…
.

It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.” (Seneca the Younger)

“I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.” – Socrates

The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a teacher.

Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) American author, editor and printer.

“Learning To Learn” is a teaching person’s main task, coaching the learner to achieve this task. Gust MEES [I said this already when I was 12 years old and now I am 56 and I din’t make me friends with that. Now I will try to push that again trough Internet…]

 .
The teaching person is serving the learner, and will act as a coach, a trustful and respectable person, sometimes even as a friend. The learner will become only that good as the teacher does well his job 😉 A big change isn’t it??? It is not anymore the teacher who is on a HIGH position and the learner on a LOW position, but it is both on a non hierarchical position, a win-win situation… There shouldn’t be neither time restrictions, learning needs time and persons learn differently…Teaching people need also a lot of patience and lots of energy to do so. For teachers, coaches, educators, professors: this needs some months practice (till about a year) till you find your own appropriate way (your own “style”), but it is worth to do it…
 .
The efforts you brought in you will get them 10 times back, teaching and learning makes fun now for learners and teaching stuffless stress on both sides and a positive feedback for the teaching people…
.
When teaching (giving courses to) ten (10) people by a normal way, you normally get out only 30% of the learners who understood really about what you tried to make understand them, when you are a good teacher maybe 40%. When using the way I did, you will come out to about 90%-95%, a big progress…
.

 .
A win-win situation between course instructor (coach) and learners which brings out a maximum to the learner, the most important…

How Could That Be In Practice???

help-books-aj.svgajash01-1
First of all I recommend you to read some books to understand, I recommend books fromHoward GARDNER and Daniel GOLEMAN, see also my book selection on the end of this knol:
.
.
  • 5 Minds For The Future (Howard GARDNER) to understand what the world needs for abilities fom students in 21st Century…
.
  • The Ethical Mind: fulfillment of one’s responsibilities as a worker and as a citizen.
 .
No practice could be done good without a good base of theory, but when having followed some pedagogical courses about new ways of education you could easily try the following suggestions:
.

As mentioned already above, it is the learner (student) who is the most important and not every learner is learning on the same way, we as human are all different and so we are also learning, differently… There are people they are learning better on “visual effects”, as others may like more “auditive” messages, people who prefer learning without noise at all around as also people who need a music-background to learn best (as I do…), people who prefer to be alone to learn as also people they like to learn and to work together in a team…

.

.

You should also read these articles:

.
.

.
Working in a team is needed for 21st Century, the Power of different knowledge merged to one only knowledge to resolve the problems of this world… Thus also meaning that children and adults need to get educated to “cross-border-thinking“, as Internet allows a 24/24 hours connexion to the whole world and that people from different nationalities can work together without any problems, even when not understanding the same language, translation tools make this possible…
.
Life Long Learning made easy and for FREE!
And that is what the new generation of Internet tools, the “Cloud” is providing, e.g. Google docs, where it is possible to work as a team on the same document and where the team could be spread around the world because the document is accessible online…
.
.
.
One is for sure, the Internet could help a lot for using all these possibilities to get the maximum out for every learner, let us use it… One new project for 21st Century Learning and Teaching is the “Papillon Project“, who will get discussed more here below…

Students to make curious again in lessons is mission of innovative content concepts to reduce the rate of school failure. Papillon is such a solution concept. By linking real and virtual learning environments Internet becomes the classroom.

And as Internet is the classroom the learners can access it anytime they want, thus meaning: if the teaching-person makes his courses interesting for the learners those will even access the “classroom” without that the teaching-person needs to tell them to do, learners will have a look anyway because they will find course material which is interesting for them, a success…
 papillongrafik1-Infographic
.
Papillon-Method: The architecture of the concept is based on narration and interaction. The hybrid system combines the advantages of static and dynamic representation of contents and is a merging of imagination and scientific facts and allows a 3-dimensional view on the recommended topical focus.
 .
The Papillon method offers a real and an imaginary level.
.
  • First, the real world of knowledge.
  • Second, a fictional world of characters and stories, which  reader has to explore.
 .
Concept of Papillon

 .

Survey from Berlin Technical University

“[…]Papillon is worthy of praise in the area of media pedagogy (enhancement of the instruction through materials) both from the perspective of what is urgently needed for the future (Internet competence) and the psychology of learning (motivation/interest and orientation toward action) and a very promising project is worthy of support“

Engaging and Motivating Students…

community-jpeg

Engaging and motivating students: this is the most important part of your teaching career, it is the first touch with your students who is the most important (which ever age they have…), this gives them the “first impression of you”…

 .
When introducing yourself, don’t make ONLY an traditional introducing, but tell your students that they are the most important in your courses and not you!!! Tell them also that you let them work alone and/or in groups (but respecting some order in the classroom, order which you define on the beginning in a friendly speaking way…) and that after having taught them what to do that you will be present but leaving them alone and watching how they do and if necessary when needed you will be present to help out. Be their guide, their coach, be only there when needed!!! In this moment show that you have competences, not only your diploma, your degree!!!
 .
Sometimes. while walking through the rows of the tables in the classroom you may remark that there are problems (you will feel that because of your pedagogical education…), so this is the moment to ask your students if they would like your help… In this moment don’t ONLY show the solution (your help…) to that part of students, but switch on the “beamer” and show it to ALL of the students, some may not have shown that they didn’t understood it…
When they have questions which you can’t answer at the moment, write those questions down somewhere where they can see it also and tell them that for the next course and/or they will get the answer(s) by email or on the collaborative platform of the school (university)… Nobody is perfect, you would be the first one 😉 Build also a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) database where every body could have access, so you will be prepared for the same answer by other students…

.
[GM]: The Quality of any done work is dependent on the Quality of the used “tools” and the ability to use them…

Doing it this way your learners will appreciate and respect you, because you are showing to them that you have competences, competences which you can share with them, don’t hide your personality behind your diploma and degree, show them who you are. Show them that you are competent to give them courses 😉

Keywords: competences, 21st cetury knowledge, coach, ability to give courses, respect, pedagogical background, ability to adapt on any situation…

What Are The Tools I Can Use???

.
While working with LMS (Learning Management System) don’t forget the aspect of security, thus meaning: when new updates for those LMS are available (you get notified by email and/or over the platform itself) youneed to update immediately otherwise your learning platform could be vulnerable and you could infect your learners and visitors with malware. Chose a person who has the necessary skills to do it and that person will than be the administrator of the learning platform…

Using MindMaps makes it much more easy to visualize a project, by seeing the MindMap most people understand directly what the target is and also what the different tasks are…
Practical Tip: print out the MindMap and strikeout all done tasks, this makes it more easy to have an overview of still to do tasks and/or change the MindMap on your computer with strikeout (strikeout) and foreseen date and print it out again…

Link to Mobile Internet
Source i-nigma:
Mobile barcodes, storing addresses and URLs, are a new and innovative way to access the mobile internet where users can use the camera on their mobile phone to scan barcodes that may appear in magazines, newspapers, billboards, LCD/plasma screens, packaging, business card and even t-shirts. A user having a mobile camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the 2D barcode causing the phone browser to launch and direct to the programmed URL. Codes can be used to provide fast-track access to mobile websites, special discount offers, send an SMS, and receive a ring-tone, save contact details on mobile address book.

A good way for learners to learn critical thinking is certainly the analyzing of the lyrics of their loved songs, this lyrics could be analyzed for nearly every song by the FREEWARE program Chart Lyrics 1.0.5.0 who could get downloaded on Sourceforge.net.

Here below a screenshot to show you, talk with your learners and analyze the lyrics, make them think about what they listen to…

Facing Problems Because Of Bad Use Of Internet???

Teaching people and parents are actually also facing the Cyberbullying problem, as also private persons, this is becoming a trend in the 21st Century, the information society… Most of people think that Internet is a lawless zone and a certain anarchy is raising. But Internet, the “virtual world” is regulated by laws who are differing from one country to the other one. But there are existing laws and Cyberbullying is not allowed, an education in schools about Cyberbullying is absolutely necessary

What Can Education Do For A Better World???

teacher

Education, if well managed can do a lot for a better world. The teaching system (worldwide) should teaching more about sensibleness of nature and social conflicts, not only the basics what is already on the teaching schedule, more teaching of sensibleness how humans are destroying our planet, trying to make learners sensible to the planet problems…

.

.

What is Education already doing for a better world??? There is a worldwide Student Exchange Program for cultural understanding existing as well as a special Concept of knowledge sharing from the European Commission, called “COMENIUS“, please watch here “Comenius“. Other possibilities from the European Commission could get found here “Education & Training“.

Education should be FREE for everybody worldwide, there is already something happening, not known by most of the people, have a look here please “Khan Academy“. Khan (The Founder) intends nothing less than “tens of thousands” of tutorials offering the “first free, world-class virtual school where anyone can learn anything.” Have a look on here as well, please: Bill Gates’ favorite teacher.

Creating Your Own Web Page…

creating web pages

In lots of countries the Ministry of Education provides the schools and universities with the facility for creating their websites by offering them also the hosting space. But this is not possible in any country and states, so those who would create a web page for their school must do it themselves. Here below a non-exhaustive list of FREE web templates who could get used for FREE:

I have worked with the older versions Nr.4 and I can recommend it as it is very easy to use, but it costs a bit money… But You may try it for FREE here http://www.todate.com/website-creation-software/free-trial-version/index.php.

[GM]: My Personal Advice…

sharing icon

By introducing the learners to the same tools which the teaching-person uses they will feelmotivated as the teaching person shares his secrets with them and they will learn what are the best tools and also how to use them and this done as a Team-Work will be best for the education process…

Tip: this applies to any age… teaching persons needs only to tell them that he (she) shares his secrets with them to create (produce) good and excellent stuff 😉 Motivate your learners, make them feel equal (win-win situation) with the teaching person and you will see the progress…
.
All those presented “tools” should not only be used alone by the teaching-person, but also shown to the learners and trying together with them to realize different projects with those “tools”…

Tell me and I will forget, Show me and I will remember, let me try and I will understand. (Confucius)
