My participation for the SID2020

programmerman-animatedWHAT is special this year with my participation on SID2020?

I created a ===> #GlobalCollaboration blog in 2017 <=== from  (my pseudo on twitter) & @ICTPHMS  for  about . The authors are from Luxembourg/Europe (me), one female teacher from the USA and a male teacher from the USA WHO are using my blog post to learn together and sharing THEIR practice with YOU dear readers.

Well, there is a lot of different views about ===> Digital CitiZENship <=== WE will explore WHAT could be THE BEST way to teach and to learn about Digital CitiZENship (hashtag on Twitter is #digcit).

Here below the links of OUR blog post:

How does it come that I post Global-Collaboration blog posts? Well, once the #ProfessionalDevelopment is Upto-Date, one does understand THAT learning in a team brings out a win-win situation and that a generation exchange is benefit for all of the participants as anyone learns from each other. BTW: here below other Global-Collaboration blogs with teaching persons from AustraliaUSAFranceLuxembourg (me):

Creativity and Maker-Spaces | maach3 LTEttelbruck

marcteusch_2013-390x390As on October 26th 2016 I had an interview with Marc TEUSCH in the Makerspace maach3” in LTEttelbruck. This is the third interview from EDUcation in Luxembourg of a series which I intend to do; the first one was about <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System, followed by Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 5) Creativity and Maker-Spaces | BEECREATIVE. For me personally it was ALSO a pleasure to visit the place as it was my old school, lots of memories and lots of positive changes in the last 40 years since I left the place… I hereby thank a lot Mr. Marc TEUSCH for having accepted my request for having an interview with him. My first request was made over Social Media Twitter (on DM; Private Message) as WE are following each other.

First WE were talking about on the HOW the “Makerspaces” were created in Luxembourg and from WHERE they come (the ideas…); as Marc told me that it isn’t a NEW idea, it actually started in the “Hackerspaces“, where Marc was ALSO involved in SYN2CAT/LEVEL2 Hackerspace Luxembourg, where I made an interview recently, Digital Luxembourg Interviews-Hackerspaces-SYN2CAT-LEVEL2, as one of its creators and founders. Marc had the idea to create a “Makerspace” in 2012 on its working place at “LTEttelbruck“, first experiments were created… And it was on March 6th 2013 that Marc was speaking about “Makerspaces” on a TEDxLuxembourg event, check video below please:

.

.

Let us have a look on THE How-To “Makerspaces” in Luxembourg are working, its Philosophy and Concept, by checking the “Mindmap” below:

.

whats-in-a-makerspace

Click the Mindmap, please, to enlarge it.

.

The idea and concept of the current BEE Creative project (http://www.bee-creative.lu), which is part of the ministry’s Digital(4)Education (http://www.digital4education.lu) effort, was conceived and developed by Marc and as such, he’s the national coordinator of Makerspaces in Luxembourg (http://www.makerspace.lu).

[Gust MEES] Remark the “Flat Hierarchy“, I love it! THIS is exactly WHAT is necessary for “Creativity” <===> Let it GO, let it flow… <===> and with THIS concept I am sure by 100% that it will be a success!!! I wish I would be 45 years younger to participate in it 😉

THIS “Concept” as used in Luxembourg is unique in Europe!! It’s ONLY in its beginning phase, BUT [Marc TEUSCH] told me WHAT is foreseen on a “Long-Term view”:

  • Getting Makerspaces in ALL schools in Luxembourg
  • Possibility to bring in Makerspaces into the curriculum, ideas and preparation on its way…
  • Makerspaces could (and should be…) a trampoline between the schools (THEORY) and the workingforce/Industry (PracTICE) to close the gap…
    • [Gust MEES] I completely agree with THAT!! I remember when I had my first job in the industry and I faced THE DIFFERENCE between the learned AND <===> SchoolCocoon Mentality <===> and WHAT really happens in the PracTICE!! OMG, I suffered :(((

.

Check ALSO, please:

.

It was in December 2013 that Marc TEUSCH was contacted by “SCRIPT” from “Luxembourg EDUcation” where he presented his ideas and vision about “Makerspaces” in Luxembourg, which was heartily welcomed as the country was looking for a NEW strategy in EDUcation to prepare it to the freshly launched campaign about “Digital Luxembourg” AND “Digital4EDUcation“.

Learn more:

.

As a reminder about WHAT the strategy is, check PIC below, please:

.

Digital 4 EDUcation-Luxembourg-2015-2-BEECREATIVE

.

Makerspaces are a GREAT way to close the gap between schools (THEORY) and the workingforce/Industry as the learners can GET the “PracTICE-Feeling” through tinkering around in the “Makerspaces” and the “Coaches” will see ALSO WHO has capabilities to GET guided to a “PracTICE-LEARNing“… This is called “Orientation Professionnelle” in the “Luxembourg EDUSystem“…

Actually there are already +/- 20 Makerspaces ready to launch by Februray 2017 and more in preparation…

My Personal View AND PracTICE

.

Framing in EDUcation[Gust MEES] MY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

Check ALSO (Up from 11 years old, give THEM THE confidence THEY need to grow):

.

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

Bring in YOUR kids to such creative makerplaces WHERE THEY can develop (and perhaps parents as well…) THEIR creativity and GET interested in something WHICH could boost THEIR interest into ICT in their future 😉

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

Check out my blog posts:

AND check my profile below as well, at the bottom of this blog post please! 😉

My Memories and Nostalgia

.

Framing in EDUcation

The <===> Makerspace Movement <===> ISN’T something NEW actually as it happend already +/- 45-50 years ago with an other name! At that time it was called <===> Do It Yourself (#DIY) <===> and was seen as pure HOBBY and NOT endorsed by EDUcation! SO, it took minimum 45 years before EDUcation realized its importance!

WHY do I say this? Well, I was one of those pioneers at that time in my youth; I used already electronics (transistors, integrated circuits, LED displays and also analog displays…) in my learning in PracTICE projects as it wasn’t foreseen yet… I won ALSO an electronics contest in 1979 from Germanic countries, which later helped me to find a BETTER job!

For evidence, here some pictures below:

A Holistic View Of WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future

A Holistic View Of WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future

WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future?

programmerman-animatedThrough ICT the Real-World and especially the Virtual-World (both are influencing each other…) are changing quicker then WE can learn about, BUT WE must adapt to it and so must EDUcation! Therefore Universities must do research about the How-To to adapt and teaching about it… Luxembourg, a small country in Europe is doing so in September 2016, read more:

Luxembourg has already a “strategy to promote media literacy” as I got told in an interview, see image below please and click on the image to access the article.

.

Digital 4 EDUcation-Luxembourg-2015-2

Click the image please to access the article.

.

There is ALSO Finland WHO made a radical change to its EDUcation-Sytem, check below please: Finland uses <===> Phenomenon based learning

Meanwhile, before research finishes its studies, WE can already have a look on WHAT is NEW in Technology and WHAT probably would be of interest for EDUcation, as well as NEW Pedagogy Theories and NEW Trends:

.

DQ

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

.

.

There will be a focus on Creativity as it was neglected too long in schools.

Because of the internet and Social Media there is NOW ALSO a new way of learning through collaboration, Global Collaboration, Peer-To-Peer Learning, mentoring, coaching:

AND as there is a global change in the way of HOW WE think about EDUcation, there are NOW ALSO <===> #TEACHerPreneurs:

There are ALSO drones and robots which could get easily integrated into Makerspaces and/or labs:

.

Blockchain

Click the image please to access the article.

.

WHEN WE talk about “Entrepreneurship“, then WE MUST ALSO talking about “Blockchain and Bitcoin” as THEY are a Game-Changer in the future, check below please:

AND as WE are using ICT: internet with iPad, tablet, smartphones, laptops, PCs, Macs, small computers such as Arduino, Raspberry PI and Co, the “Internet of Things” WE MUST ALSO have basics knowledge of “CyberSecurity“, check below please:

.

.

WE need ALSO to know about “Privacy“, “Digital Footprint” and “BIG DATA“, check below please:

In Europe, from the EU, there is already a manifesto for ModernEDU (eSkills), check below please:

And shouldn’t WE talk ALSO about “AI”, Artificial Intelligence?

And last but not least Apps. I put Apps on the END of this list as Apps are ONLY facilitators, it is Pedagogy FIRST!

.

With ALL the above mentioned possibilities, how can WE already NOW make a concept of LEARNing?

NO Framing in EDUcationWith ALL the above mentioned possibilities, how can WE already NOW make a concept of LEARNing? Please check my blog post below:

.

What is nearly for sure is THAT most courses will be PracTICE orientated, check my blog posts below, please:

And here WHAT probably will be the future, check below please:

Creativity and Maker-Spaces | BEECREATIVE

Nadine SCHIRTZ and Yvonne ZOTZAs on July 25th 2016 I had an interview with Nadine SCHIRTZ and Yvonne ZOTZ in the The flagship makerspace of the national Youth Service SNJ “BASE 1” at Forum Geesseknäppchen in Luxembourg-City. This is the second interview of a series which I intend to do; the first one was about <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System.

I hereby thank a lot Mrs. Nadine SCHIRTZ for having accepted my request for having an interview with her. My first request was made over Social Media Facebook (on PM; Private Message) as WE are friends on Facebook (Social Media) and I am ALSO member of the “Advisory Board” from BEESECURE where Nadine is ALSO involved. Nadine replied to my request with giving me her work eMail Address. I sent her an official request by eMail and it was getting accepted; as YOU see Social Media has a lot of advantages 😉

I thank ALSO a lot Yvonne ZOTZ, the responsible person for the “BASE 1 at Forum Geesseknäppchen” (left-hand on the above photo).

It was a pleasure to talk together for 1h:30 to two lovely ladies with a LOT of competency and professional behavior! I enjoyed very much that conversation as especially WE were talking about the “Pedagogy” and “Social” behind and that it ISN’T pure “Technology”, THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!

Nadine is officially working for http://www.snj.public.lu/fr. Makerspaces in Luxembourg are set up via the BEE CREATIVE project by SCRIPT and SNJ in both formal education (schools) and non-formal education(child daycare structures, youth houses,…) settings.

Yvonne is THE “Space-Keeper“, the responsible person for the MakerspaceBASE 1” and she is ALSO running under contract of http://www.snj.public.lu/fr. Let us mention ALSO that the “Makerspaces” in Luxembourg are embodied by the “SCRIPT” from Luxembourg EDUcation System, where M. Serge LINCKELS coordinates them; I interviewed M. Serge LINCKELS already <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System.

Let us remember HOW the STRATEGY of the Luxembourg EDUcation System is by watching the picture below, please:

.

Digital 4 EDUcation-Luxembourg-2015-2

Click the above image please, to access the article.

.

WHERE BEECREATIVE is making THIS part of the STRATEGY, check PIC please.

Click the above image please, to access the website of BEECREATIVE.

.

As mentioned already above, each Makerspace has its “Space-Keeper”, the responsible person of that place. These “Space-Keeper’s” connect together WITH THEIR TEAMS throughNetworking“, Thus meaning: they have meetings over the internet through the “Cloud”<===> [NS] WHERE they meet regularly and in person in different makerspaces and at events to exchange views and projects. Of course, networking via IT-tools is another important aspect. They make an exchange of  “GOOD PracTICEs”, NEW ideas, NEW projects…

More information about BEECREATIVE and Makerspaces:

Check out ALSO the videos on YouTube about makerspaces in Luxembourg:

A video WHO explains well WHAT the <===> Maker Movement is <===> from Marc TEUSCH (Luxembourg)

.

Let me ALSO tell YOU dear readers THAT the girls got my questions send per eMail as a preparation before I met them and that THEY even didn’t talk about it, well THAT is WHAT I call clever and smart at the same time; THEY knew WHAT I wanted to talk about and THEY used it to talk in a context and NOT as in a SCHOOL test!! Well done GIRLS 😉 I loved it!! 😉

WHAT is the STRATEGY and Pedagogy behind AND the Social!?

Information LiteracyWell, that is VERY interesting as I found out by discussing in the interview with the two young ladies, who by the way were VERY professional and with a LOT of COMPETENCY: looks like Luxembourg will have a bright future on ICT in the next coming years!!

I was VERY OPEN-MINDED and listening to Yvonne as she explained me very well WHAT is behind such “Makerspace” places; well I knew it already WHAT it is, BUT HOW it is done in Luxembourg I didn’t know really NOR do OTHERS (my readers…) probably!! Nadine as well gave me ALSO some GOOD points and both girls (Ladies) explained me very well WHAT is the point behind!!

Well, Luxembourg is following NEW trends in EDUcation as well, as ICT is becoming THE MAJOR slogan for the country <===> #DigitalLëtzebuerg #DigitalLuxembourg #Digital4EDUcation <===> AND THAT Luxembourg has to do something OUT of the NORMAL to shine!! I agree with THAT by 100%!! Luxembourg doesn’t have enough qualified people in the ICT-sector and has to work for to get them soon! Through the “makerspaces” kids might get influenced as well to be interested in their future to study in ICT!

.Profile of a modern school leader-2015

[NS] With BEE CREATIVE, Luxembourg has become the first country to develop e-skills and e-creativity by implementing makerspaces in both formal and non-formal education systems. This is a milestone in the thrive towards an enlightened and motivated generation of “cyber citizens” in the political frame of “Digital Luxembourg”.

[GM] I totally agree with THAT!!

Please check ALSO my blog posts:

.

SO WHAT did Yvonne and Nadine tell me WHICH made me listening MORE? Well, Makerspaces are THE first place to GET kids interested in something special, a place WHERE creativity could GET fostered, WHERE TEAMS get build WITH SAME interests without knowing on the beginning that such things could even happen!! Youth is invited by groups of minimum of six (6), MOSTLY from EDUcation, BUT if clever NOT necessarily to use the ONLY EDUcation!!! Contact the girls to find out 😉

Here the contact information:

www.bee-creative.lu; www.base1.lu or via Facebook pages BASE1 and BEE CREATIVE

Let us talk ALSO about Coaching, the little YOU exercised and trying to get everybody into the boat WHERE a Win-Win situation is exercised WITHOUT any sort of Hierarchy so that YOUTH can develop itself WITHOUT FEAR of WHATEVER (#SchoolCocoon in mind…); teachers become learners and learners become teachersA GRATEFUL exchange of knowledge, ISN’T it!? WE are living in 21st Century right and here it gets practiced 😉

Check out ALSO my blog post about Coaching:

Let us talk ALSO about <===> Emotional Intelligence, called ALSO EQ (Emotional Quotient); and cite ALSO Daniel GOLEMAN:

The Forum Geesseknäppchen” in Luxembourg-City has really ALL WHAT is needed to GET youth the possibilities to develop a creative mind as well that THEY are guided with GOOD trained coaches (teachers, educators…), supervised by “SCRIPT“; let us have a look:

  • Jeunes scientifiques (Jonk Fuerscher)
  • Mérite Jeunesse
  • Projet SQUAT
    • As I got told the “Projet SQUAT” is: there is a special room in the “Forum Geesseknäppchen” who could get hired; this room is equipped with ALL the necessary stuff for holding meetings and to use the ICT stuff in it. It’s a place WHERE young entrepreneurs could come in and GET coached to realize THEIR projects, it’s about <===> Project Based LEARNing (PBL) <===>… My personal meaning. Luxembourg has NOW its “1€ Company Law” accepted, thus meaning: to boost “Entrepreneurship” companies could get created by ONLY investing 1€ for its creation, a simplified way of an “a.s.b.l.“; I guess that this concept together with “Projet SQUAT” will have a BIG success as soon as it will GET more known by young (and old, why not…) entrepreneurs! As on 16-January-2017 this would be possible!!

WHAT will happen NEXT!???

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-aigainformation1Well, there are some challenges in the air 😉 I got told THAT there is a <===> MakerFest <===> on 19-20 December 2016  in the “Forum Geesseknäppchen” in Luxembourg-City WHERE the organisators are looking to make it a VERY BIG EVENT while using as MUCH possible place as possible inside the building to give YOUTH its way to develop!! AND of course a LOT of prizes from http://www.snj.public.lu/fr and from possible sponsors…

A fashion défilé (catwalk) will be organized and the kids will wear their clothes with wearables (which they created themselves…), kids will play THEIR OWN composed and/or sampled music for the background music and much more…

Learn more:

Update (07-04-2017): Up from September 2017 there will be “BEE CREATIVE for kids” introduced! Makerspaces will get held ALSO THEN in the “Maisons Relais” and in the Primary School.

Update (04-07-2017): A <===> Makerfest <===> was organized at Lycée Technique ESCH/ALZETTE on 04-07-2017. Over 1.000 persons were present on the second Makerfest at LTESCH (Luxembourg) on 04-07-2017, organized by BEECREATIVE, Service National de la Jeunesse, SCRIPT. Lots of different schools from around the country were present with their students (learners) from any age!
It was a pleasure to see with HOW MANY fun the kids and teens were “making” and LEARNing 😉

The questions for the interview

Chat icon.

.Concerning the questions and answers WE will use initials such as:

  • [GM] for Gust MEES
  • [NS] for Nadine SCHIRTZ

.

Questions for interview <===> Makerspaces

  • [GM] WHEN (date) were Makerspaces in Luxembourg opened ?
    • [NS] „The flagship makerspace of the national Youth Service SNJ“ was “Base1” which opened in November 2015. All of the six actually open Makerspaces were launched on the same day by Minister Claude Meisch in November 2015. After the launch event, the different makerspaces adopted their own rhythm. Some needed more time to fill up their space with workshops, others were ready to start right away. As for the SNJ makerspace “Base1”, it is active and open on a daily basis since January 2016.
  • [GM] How many Makerspaces do actually exist in Luxembourg ? (I know there are six & more will open soon?)
    • [NS] Actually six makerspaces are up and running in Luxembourg. 5 of them are set in high schools. As BEE CREATIVE grows, the interest in Makerspaces becomes bigger and bigger. Right now, SCRIPT has a full list of secondary schools and even a couple of primary schools who want to open their own makerspace in the coming schoolyear. As for SNJ, we are focusing on the non-formal education settings. Meaning that we are going to fully support at least 3 Maisons Relais across Luxembourg to open a makerspace in their premises. The maker movement and interest in IT creativity really is a milestone in Luxembourgish education.
  • [GM] Do You have actually some statistics on how many people (also by age…) have visited the Makerspaces ? Maybe ALSO graphs about it ?
    • [NS] I don’t know for the school makerspaces, but at “Base1”, we counted 1200 visits in the first six months. Tendency: growing… 😉
  • [GM] Is it possible for anyone to visit the “Makerspaces” OR are they ONLY available from persons of EDU (Educators, teachers, students, learners)?
    • [NS] Logistics sometimes make it difficult for school makerspaces to open their doors to non-students. They do their best however to welcome a large audience during events etc. It is free for every makerspace to choose how the access to their space should be handled. At Base1, young people are welcome to work on their projects. We don’t really care whether they come on their own during “Open space” times or with a group from school, a youth house, a Maison Relais. If you’re not sure whether you can come to Base1, just call and ask…
  • [GM] Are the Makerspaces ALSO OPEN during the school holidays ?
    • [NS] Right now, the only Makerspace open during school holidays is the Base1. (The one where we are for the interview). However this might change in the future. As I already said, each makerspace can choose when to open or close their doors and the need to keep them open during holidays might increase in the future.
  • [GM] I have recently read that « Girls in Tech » were ALSO in one Makerspace, are there more such events planned ? Next Girls in Tech Event to Explore Creative Programming and a Maker Space (31-05-2016) as I find this very important to boost it, especially in programming (coding). Girls are very GOOD in this 😉 Check history of programming (ADA, #WWII, encrypting, Apollo code for moon landing…)

[GM] Concerning <===> Girls in Tech <===> did YOU know that there were already a LOT of celebrities (today) in programming (coding) in history?

My Personal View AND PracTICE

.

Framing in EDUcationMY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts.

Check ALSO:

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

The Luxembourg EDU-System

Serge LINCKELS (SCRIPT/LUXEMBOURG/EDUCATION)As on April 11th 2016 I had an interview with M. Serge LINCKELS from the Ministry of EDUcation in Luxembourg (SCRIPT) on the site of « eduPôle », the building from the Ministry of EDUcation regrouping different services such as :

I hereby thank a lot M. Serge LINCKELS for the heartily welcome and ALL the possible information which he was allowed to share with me. The interview was about 1h:10 minutes, positively surprised about to have that much opportunity, thank You M. LINCKELS 😉 WE were ALSO talking a bit about my past, the WHAT I did in EDUcation to know BETTER each other… Well, that was at least one educator, teacher WHO was able to listen, a quality which MOST people have forgotten! He was ALSO SO friendly to give me the necessary contact information for questions which are NOT in his resorts, OTHER hierarchy…

Well, THAT ISN’T a problem (there are ONLY solutions anyway…), and I am feeling VERY HAPPY  about that one of my major questions was answered very positively. It is about inviting OTHER educators, teachers for visiting Luxembourg to find out about the  “LUX-EDU-System“! YES, it is possible, WE will discuss it in the question section 😉

Concerning the questions and answers WE will use initials such as:

  • [GM] for Gust MEES
  • [SL] for Serge LINCKELS

Questions:

  • Concerning the  Lux-EDU-System: Is there an infographic available which explains visually?

.

  • [GM] There is a MASTER in Secondary EDUcation, WHAT about a MASTER for Primary TEACHers!? Is this foreseen, necessary?
  • [GM] Does the “Lux-EDU-System” ALSO include the communication with parents?
    • [SL] There are parent meetings and some schools are using ALSO Apps to communicate with the parents, else the communication from EDU is organized through SMS and eMail.
  • [GM] Update on 14-06-2016: Check ALSO <===> http://www.scoop.it/t/luxembourg-europe/?tag=Orientierung
  • [GM] Do the iPads, Laptops stay in school OR can the learners, students take them at home also?
    • [SL] Mostly they stay at school, but apparently some schools allow also the learners, students to bring their own devices.
  • [GM] Is it possible for anyone to visit the “Makerspaces” OR are they ONLY available from persons of EDU (Educators, teachers, students, learners)?
  • [GM] Is it possible for some of my followers from Twitter, who are Educators, Teachers from France and Germany to visit You for discovering about the NEW “Lux-EDU-System”?
    • [SL] YES, as long as You don’t bring me a whole train in 😉 [GM] A bit humor was possible also 🙂

Check ALSO the video below please from the official opening of <===> eduSphere. It’s in Luxembourgish and German.

First Steps When Kids Go Online

programmerman-animatedThe first steps before the kids go online are to protect the computer and Smartphone(s) at its BEST as possible to make sure that a BAD click will NOT become a catastrophe! Second step is to talk to the kids about the dangers of the internet and related with the use of the computer and the tablets, Smartphones and about the dangers of Social Media.

.

French (Français): Danger connu est danger vaincu ! Mieux vaut prévoir que valoir ! Un enfant averti en vaut deux. English: Forewarned is Forearmed! Deutsch (German): Gefahr erkannt is Gefahr gebannt! Vorsicht heisst die Mutter der Porzellankiste!

« Good habits formed at youth make all the difference. » Aristotle

.

How To Protect The Home Network AND The Computers In This Network!?

YES, YOU have read it correctly, I mentioned “Network”. WHY!? Because just letting everybody owning ONLY his (her) own device at home wouldn’t make sense, BETTER is to connect ALL the devices (Smartphones, tablets…) together in a Network where YOU could share even together your files, photos, videos… AND this through a secured Network. Everybody will get his OWN “User Account” where one “User Account” will be the “Administrator Account“, the parents account, who will have 100% access on the main computer. ALL the others will have an “User Account” with restricted access. Check out below on the How-To create “User Accounts”.

YOU may ALSO change the Wi-Fi Password 2-3 times a week on YOUR router so that YOUR kids get ONLY access after THEY made certain tasks which YOU told THEM to achieve 😉 Thus meaning, YOU handle over the NEW Password ONLY when those tasks were achieved!

Change your Router’s Pass Word!

help-books-aj.svgajash01-1

Cybercriminals may also use your Router (without that you know it…) when you haven’t changed the original settings! Text from Internet / Network Security

===> The first step in securing your wireless network is the same as the first step for just about everything else in computers and computer networking — always change the defaults. Any attacker can find out what the default username and password is for a given program or device in just a few minutes. <===

SO, NOW YOU got a protected Network and the family members are in a technical secured home environment, what else to do!?

For whatever device (computer, tablet, Smartphone…) and/or OS (Operating System/Mac, Linux, Windows) YOUR family members own, YOU MUST install an antivirus on them. I recommend to use an “Internet Security Suite” which combines antivirus, firewall, antispyware and… Read more below what else to do…

Learn in one week how to get Best protection-The Practice

.

programmerman-animatedI will divide the tasks through a whole week, so it will be very easy for you to find the necessary time to achieve them, those who have the necessary time can, of course, achieve more tasks…

.

.

Day of the Week Web Address of Blog  Task  Necessary time
Monday Installing WOT + McAfee SiteAdvisor for knowing which websites are trustful and which ones are malicious!
“WOT” ALONE isn’t enough! My experience over years 😉
Windows + Mac5 minutes per program ONLY!
Tuesday Check if your browsers and its plugins are updated! Why should I?

Windows + Mac

5 minutes per browser ONLY!

Wednesday

Use BitDefender QuickScan and scan your computer! Find out if your computer is clean. It only takes a few seconds.Install Secunia Personal Software Inspector, which is checking and automating updates of Third Party Programs.

Windows

Few minutes ONLY for both programs!

Thursday Install Security Score which helps you to know if you made ALL the necessary updates…

Windows

5 minutes ONLY!

Friday Check any Friday if you got the latest updates! 10-15 minutes ONLY!
Saturday It’s Disk Encryption time: you need to install this software only once, so it’s ONLY a one time action!

Install an Encryption Software, I suggest the OpenSource Tool

Windows + Mac + LinuxSeveral hours…

.

.Sunday: Use the Sunday for a relax check if everything is OK! It takes ONLY 5 minutes. Use the “Security Score” Software to check if everything is OK! 5 minutes ONLY!

.

As you can see in the table “Necessary Time”, most actions need ONLY 5-10 minutes! Eaaaaaaaasy to follow and to use, what are you waiting for!? 😉

.

For those who have the necessary time: I suggest to you to install first the FREE program “Security Score” (for WINDOWS ONLY) and start to check after your Tuesday-Task and after any days task to see the evolution of your security score! This will probably make you more confident and you certainly will try to reach a better “Security Score”, this for your motivation… Try it out:

WHAT’s The Appropriate Age For Kids To Start With It AND How-To?

.

« Good habits formed at youth make all the difference. » Aristotle

.

programmerman-animatedWHAT’S THE appropriate age for kids to start learning about InternetSafety and CyberSecurity? A question I get asked very often. Well, let us say it this way: when kids understand what is BAD and GOOD, that will be the perfect timing to start to teach them about the dangers of the internet and how to get the right reflexes. YES, reflexes they can learn them easily, NO Technic of course as they wouldn’t understand it! Experts say that the right age would be 5 years old, check the link below, please:

Personally I started to teach my wife’s niece 12 years ago when she was 4 1/2 year old and that worked perfectly. I will tell YOU how I did and YOU can try it out as well, success guaranteed.

First of all ask the kid if it knows about the BAD and the GOOD in our real world and tell it that on the internet (virtual world) it is the same. Tell them that the BAD guys will infect the computer, explain them that it is similar to an infection in real world (flu, as example…). For that reason they need a protection on the computer which will get updated, that’s the vaccine. When they know about vaccine in real world, they will understand that it is a MUST!

Parents should have taught them this about vaccines! WE will remember them each day (or at any time they go online) when getting online with the computer to check if the antivirus is switched on, they will get ===> THE reflex <=== later to check about THAT action. It is actually very easy, I will explain below.

.

antivirus in taskbar

As YOU can see on left-hand side the antivirus, in our case “Norton Internet Security Suite” is visible (see red circle). WE see as well that there is a green checkmark. This checkmark shows us that the antivirus is switched on and updated. Tell the kids up from early age to check this every time they use the computer, they will remember it.

Install ALSO WOT and McAfee SiteAdvisor on any devices as both show what websites to trust by indicating it with three different colours (green, orange, red). The kids will recognize the colours and understand.

.

McAfee SiteAdvisor

.

With the above mentioned advice your kids will learn the necessary basic reflexes to stay safe on the internet. BUT DON’T FORGET: a security by 100% doesn’t exist and the weakest link in the security chain is the human!

Learning Responsibility: Family Pledge And Passwords

.

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01Use a psychological trick to remember your family members about the MUST to take care about their weekly CyberHygiene, the reflex to learn, and play the songThe Reflex-Duran Duran”. They will get used to it, and every time they hear the song they would know that there is something special to do, such as NEW “Updates“! Easy to use, isn’t it 😉

.

.

Organize a Family Weekly-Security-Day

Community

My suggestion: to make sure that anybody’s computer is secure at home I suggest that you introduce a “Family Weekly-Security-Day“, where any week one member of your family will get chosen as the  “responsible” for the week and that “responsible” will remind you to respect the weekly task and controls also that the task was achieved! I will provide you with a sheet from Google Docs which you can use for it…

===> Play as a team in the family to make sure that everybody respects the weeklySecurity-Day! Any week someone else is responsible to remember the whole team (family) for the Weekly-Security-Day-Task! <===

Worksheets on Google Docs:

You can even imagine some penalties such as e.g. making the dish-wash for 2 days, or similar, LOL 😉

.

===> Motivation: don’t let us forget the positive side and motivate members of family to do that unusual task by giving them some special bonus points when well done that task! Those bonus points could result in: <===

.

  • Penalties could get reset for a certain time (up to you to make the rules…)
  • Bonus points will get collected and by reaching a certain score will result by paying out some money (up to you to say how much…)
  • Your own ideas for motivating the team to do the tasks…
.

Create a family pledge where the members have to agree to to respect the family community responsibility. You may ALSO make one member of the family the responsible person for one week who takes care of the others and who will supervise that each member of the family respects the weekly security tasks. A spreadsheet may help, here below an example.

SO, What’s THE Change For Teachers In 21st Century Education!?

.

=> I need to repeat THIS below as it seems that TEACHERS and EDUCATION didn’t YET understood it on the right way! <=

sharing iconThis is a general overview only to explain in simple words:

I get asked very often and get also a lot of discussions with people and also teachers about what’s THE real CHANGE in 21st Century Education and especially for teachers, even that MOST people tell me that “THE CHANGE” is very difficult to understand! BUT it’s actually very easy to understand.

BUT it ===> needs to get accepted from the teachers!  <===

This is my point of view, let me explain, please:

.

What really changed for teachers is the way they will teach the students, THEY are NOT anymore “THE BOSS” in the classroom, ===> THEY are NOW a coach! <=== Someone who is guiding the students (learners) in THEIR way of learning and showing THEM how to learn and to deal with the BIG DATA on the Internet! It is NOT anymore a classroom of silence, it is a classroom where learners sit together in groups to solve problems in a team, solving the problems and learning together with the skills THEY acquired through previous teaching lessons.

It’s NOW ===> Us and THEM <===, WE try to work as a team for getting BEST results, it is NOWlearner-centeredWE as teaching persons are NOT anymore THE most important one, BUT WE change THE way how WE are TEACHING and WE focus on what OUR mission is: giving OUR learners (students) the BEST Education to face the REAL WORLD outside of the “School-Cocoon“, thus meaning: WE need to know what the skills are that the REAL WORLD needs!

.

students-workforce

Image source: Prepare Learners for the Global Workforce

The teacher is NOT anymore in front of the class, BUT s(he) is together with the learners in the classroom. WHERE the term CLASSROOM needs to get redefined!

=> THE CLASSROOM is not anymore inside the schools, ===> NO “School-Cocoon” anymore! <=

===> THE WALLS are broken and Teaching and Learning takes part everywhere, outside the “OLD definition of CLASSROOM”! <===

It is ALSO the WE as WE are looking for a win-win situation between OUR learners and us as teachers, WE try to get out the BEST “Team-Work” as it is that skills are needed in the REAL WORLD from the employers! Students (Learners) should know about “Team-Work” as they will face it once out of school and being employed!

The biggest mistake teachers actually make is thinking that by using the newest educational ICT tools and technical devices will make them a 21st Century teacher, NO ===> NOT AT ALL!

[Start Text from: Don’t Confuse Technology With TeachingEducators are coachespersonal trainers in intellectual fitness. The value we add to the media extravaganza is like the value the trainer adds to the gym or the coach adds to the equipment. We provide individualized instruction in how to evaluate and make use of information and ideas, teaching people how to think for themselves. [End Text from: Don’t Confuse Technology With Teaching]

Imagine That You Own Your Own Company And The Learners Are YOUR Employees

.

SO… I said that YOU need to prepare YOUR students (learners) for the Real-World, it’s easy saying isn’t it? BUT How-To? Like the title of this section of the blog says it already:

===>Imagine That You Own Your Own Company And The Learners Are YOUR Employees<===

.

community-jpegGot it, did YOUR brain got a kick!? I hope so, as WHEN THINKING that way YOU will THINK completely different as YOU want to do everything to survive for earning YOUR existence and the choice of YOUR employees will be made ONLY from the BEST! SO… Teach THEM ALSO to be the BEST to make sure that THEY will get a job, a job where THEY are able to face the needs of the working market!

.

Employees in the 21st Century need ===> to be multitasking <=== in a working market who is worldwide in a big crisis, companies don’t have that much money to employ people for any special task! Prepare YOUR Learners, Students to that situation!

.

thumbsupnathaneady01THINK Proactive, ask YOURSELF the questions:

  • Do MY Learners, Students know enough about the use of Microsoft Office programs (the most used in companies)?
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills to write quickly a letter?
    • Make a practical test and stop the time to find out!
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills to create quickly an Excel data-Sheet?
    • Make a practical test and stop the time to find out!
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills to create quickly an Organization-Chart?
    • Make a practical test and stop the time to find out!
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills to stay well organized in an office?
    • Make a practical test and stop the time to find out!
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills with Social Media? Most of companies use it already for their marketing strategies!
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills about Cyber-Security?  This is a MUST in 21st Century as when NOT knowing that THEY could make mistakes who would be lethal for any company!
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills for an interview with their future employer? Did YOU train THEM for it?
  • Do MY Learners, Students have enough skills to write a “CV”, a “Resume”? This is very important as it is the first contact the employer gets, when NOT well written there will be NO interview!
    • I have worked for the “employment agency” in my country and I have seen the lack of knowledge about it from job seekers, it’s to improve

.

I hope that the above reflections and advice made YOUR grey cells a bit more active to THINK about how YOU can integrate YOUR own teaching lessons with the PracTICE, I am sure that YOU will find a way and also some pleasure to play the “BOSS” of a company and to test YOUR Students, Learners as it would be in PracTICE outside the “School-Cocoon” 😉

.

===> Don’t forget: Students, Learners are the future of OUR society, WE as teaching persons have the RESPONSIBILITY for that SOCIETY! <===

.

On March 12, 2013 I had the chance to get interviewed by Doug PETERSON. Here is (partial) what Doug said:

Gust MEES and I have followed each other for some time now.  I’m not sure how we “met” but I’ll let him recall it shortly.  He’s an intriguing individual – lives in Luxembourg (Europe) http://www.scoop.it/t/luxembourg-europe, a country with ONLY 502,000 inhabitants and is a regular on Twitter.  You can find him very active there as @knolinfos.

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-attenzionearchitettofr01I will ONLY publish in this blog the part which seems to me the most important for my readers, the WHY of the MUST of Cyber-Security Teaching in Education, so let’s go:

.

Doug: So much of your focus appears to be on Education and Security.  You have a huge curation of materials.  Why the interest in these topics?

Gust:  You are right, I have a lot of interests (I am curious for Learning more). Well, I should divide it also in the two topics, let’s start with IT-Security, the beginning. I am online since 1998 and I read also a lot, books and magazines. I got my first knowledge of IT-Security in 1999 by reading PC-Magazines and I applied it also on my PC and of course, as I am not selfish and having the will to share it with others, I published it also on my website(s).

A certain moment come, my websites had a big success. In private life people told me that I am crazy to talk about security, virus and more of those strange beasts problems at that time. So now my website has more than 2 million visits, see pic below, please.

sharing-iconI started so to learn more about and also to share my knowledge with others and even that my Security courses got accepted by the Ministry of Education in Luxembourg (Europe), my country. Check here, please (in French):

Once started, one must continue when there is a demand for it ;) Looks like people love my way of explaining and teaching. I became also a member (Advisory Board) of:

And that’s why I started also to make the curation about IT-Security, Cyber-Security.

Sharing my acquired knowledge with others is priority and a pleasure also!

A pleasure!? Am I kidding? NO, it’s something who makes me happy, check here:

When I do something for other people, I feel good, “says Peterson“. When you do something voluntarily for others, not only for its own interests, it is rewarded. In some mysterious way, serve as an “altruistic” (the opposite of selfishness) gives his own life more important. It seems that nature have put it in our genes, or that people are happy when they have the spirit of sharing, community spirit.

So, dear readers, make yourself feeling good and share ;)

Concerning now Education, that’s a bit a different story. I was a manager with Electronics background  and worked for different companies when later I got unemployed with 45 years old (2000). I was looking for a new job and I saw that the Government was looking for ICT instructors, proposing to give people pedagogical courses to be able to do this job. I applied and I passed the tests, later I was studying for 4 months pedagogy, tailored for ICT. Very hard to study pedagogy at that age, but I got IT. One is never too old to learn new stuff, when the will is there.

I became months later an ICT course instructor on an eight (8) hour base work and on 5 days per week work, very hard… I gave courses to adults, seniors (even 70+…), primary classrooms and primary school teachers… I was getting nearly obsessed by learning, I found my destination, I found my vocation, I love it to teach…

My knowledge (professional development) was updated by following different other courses and by reading a lot of books, where here below my selection:

Doug: Do you find educators more or less concerned about security than the average online citizen?

Gust:  YES, I do, sorry! Educators are less motivated to learn about the basics of Cyber-Security, IT-Security and have ALSO less knowledge about it, my point of view resulting by practice. Meaning that Educators I know (friends) and also by analyzing the stream of tweets on Twitter shows me that!

programmerman2Doug: Why do you think this is that way?

Gust:  That’s a real million dollar, euro question ;) Well, as most of Educators are using NOT a PC but most a Mac and some a computer with Linux OS, they feel too secure! But thinking that these OS (Operating Systems) are secure, that’s NOT the reality, sorry. NOBODY is perfect, NO OS is perfect, reality shows us that when one is analyzing the attacks and vulnerabilities worldwide!

.

Doug: Do you find that Macintosh or Linux users have this over confidence that their platform is immune to problems?

Gust:  YES, I do! You are right with the word “Over Confidence” as it is exactly that! I don’t make a war of different OS, but one must be aware today that Nobody Is Perfect, attacks and vulnerabilities are showing us that, see here please:

Concerning the Mac, check the Report from, SYMANTEC here:

.

Mac-Insecurity-Threats-Symantec-2012

.

Don’t forget also about mobile phones, Android is also based on Linux as OS! Check here:

Doug: What can be done to turn this around?

teacherGust:  Seriously and convinced, I think that there is a MUST to teach the basics of Cyber-Security by Education in any schools around in the world, and this up from early age! The kids will understand it very quickly, they are more intelligent as most adults think as their computers and smartphones are the (nearly) most important to them! I have worked together with teens (11 years old and +) and showed them How To protect their computers and how to stay informed about new threats, that was a piece of cake for them, I even didn’t think that it could be that easy, I was surprised! Convincing adults is (???) more (very) hard!

So, how could that be in practice? That was the question I asked myself (oh yes, I thought a lot…) and here are my propositions and advice:

Apart from teaching the basics of Cyber-Security in schools by traditional learning, one should try ALSO to involve and engage youth in that process of learning, learning by doing and learning to have responsibility! IT’s ALL about responsibility anyway when working and using ICT (BYOD included)! This could be realized with a piece of theater (it took me a year of development) where they could be involved as actors (players) and also by giving them the feeling of being an IT-Hero by becoming Security-Scouts. Sounds strange? Check the links below to learn more:

Doug: You call yourself an ICT Course Instructor.  What courses have you instructed or are currently instructing?

Gust:  Lots of my courses are present (in French) on the server of the Ministry of Education in Luxembourg (Europe):

They are for domestic security, the basic knowledge which anybody should have in the 21st Century… Created with the less possible technical expressions…

Actually I am preparing blogs where I want to share my 10 years lived practice on How To I used the knowledge where most are only starting now to learn it and/or using it.
