Introduction

programmerman-animated[GM] AND once again Dan KIRSCH and Gust MEES are making Global-Collaboration to show YOU dear readers, parents, EDUcators, TEACHers, THE problems encountered and the solutions which WE propose to YOU for a BETTER, a Modern EDUcation by professional advice. Teaching and Coaching life isn’t easy at ALL! Especially NOT WHEN persons with an Up-To-Date Professional Development in EDUcation create NEW ways of learning with ICT, Technology and NEW Pedagogy. Rare are the people WHO understand WHAT is actually going on in the world and especially in the “Virtual World”, the internet!!! And THEN using it ALSO for giving courses, come on, a world which MOST DON’T understand!??? That sounds like blasphemy, isn’t it!? People GET thrown out of THEIR normal life, THEIR Comfort-Zone, their well feeling Cocoon in the society in which they live!

WE as authors understand THAT it isn’t easy to understand HOW FAR Technology is ALREADY and THAT MOST people won’t understand it neither, BUT WE as TEACHing, Coaching persons MUST follow UP with it and LEARNing the NEW stuff as well as giving the NEW acquired knowledge to the kids to make THEM ready for the Society WHICH is waiting for professional workers/employees! A very hard job, BUT WE love OUR profession and SO WE do WHAT WE think is the BEST for YOUR kids (OUR kids as well)…

This time the authors, WE, are talking about Social-Media in EDUcation and its benefits for the LEARNers, Students, YOUR kids.

THE authors (as usual) will show up in this blog post with THEIR initials such as <===> [DK] for Dan KIRSCH and [GM] for Gust MEES.

.

Let us talk first WHAT Social Media is to understand it and its influence!

[GM] It is IMPORTANT first to know WHAT it is, whatever WE are talking about, so please check the video below please ūüėČ

.

YOU certainly GOT a GOOD overview about WHAT Social Media is NOW, right!? SO, let us GO for a deeper insight by following my curation about it as well, please:

As YOU have certainly understood NOW WHAT Social Media is YOU will agree THAT it isn’t anything BAD, there are ONLY certain rules to accept, actually the same as in Real-Life BUT with a bit MORE prudence! In Real-Life YOU are NOT connected with the whole world, BUT in Virtual-World YOU are, so keep YOUR mouth shut for WHAT YOU wouldn’t tell YOUR grand mother WHEN using Social Media ūüėČ WHEN working with Social Media one MUST consider having taught already about <===> Digital CitiZENship <===> WHERE the learners, students have learned already about those rules.

Learn more by reading my and OUR collaborative blog posts here, please:

Here below a NEW holistic view of WHAT SHOULD get taught: THE Digital Intelligence, called also “DQ”.

Problems in EDUcation while using Social Media in Modern EDUcation – Acceptance and rejections

WE will discuss here some problems which could occur with a practical example; online friend and co-author “Dan KIRSCH” will tell YOU about:

Dan KIRSCH[DK]¬†The problem with sharing TEACHABLE lessons via social media; from an Educators perspective is explaining to parents/guardians it’s purpose is to¬†be a LIFE LONG LEARNER. Essentially, educating other teachers on new ways of TEACHING content to their students. As well as being a LEARNER myself; finding other useful information and teaching ideas from other EDUCATORS via SOCIAL MEDIA. For instance, this year I created a Physical Education Twitter ¬†account in order to showcase what my STUDENTS¬†were LEARNING in class and to hopefully provide ideas for teaching Physical Education to other Physical Education teachers around the globe. On a personal note I created the account also to learn knew ways of teaching Physical Education from other teachers who were on Twitter. Unfortunately, I shut these account down due to privacy concerns. Privacy is a major concern of mine and is something I take very seriously as you can read in blog posts on Digital Citizenship written by Gust and myself. I informed by administrators to write a letter informing my students parents/guardians on¬†“WHY” I use social media in Physical Education class. The following link is the parent letter I wrote. I have also provided links to showcase the importance of using Social Media for Professional Development and growing your Professional Learning Network (PLN).

Why is Professional Development For Physical Educators So Important? #infographic

.

[DK] The following is a Physical Education Twitter Chat ==> #PEChat I follow in order to learn ideas of how to teach Physical Education as well as sharing my ideas with other teachers (why I have my blog). Again, learning and growing with other Professional Educators via Social Media!! That is the goal and why it needs to be understood and accepted!!.

[DK] The following infographic also lists several #Physed hashtags that Physical Education Teachers can follow on Twitter. The rationale (as previously mentioned) is to collaborate and LEARN new ideas of how to teach Physical Education from other Professionals around the world. This is the issue we must get across to parents/guardians; it is a method of making their child’s educational experience better!!!

Image-1

.

[GM] Thank You Dan for YOUR insight here and YOUR encountered experience, which certainly isn’t fun at all for You and any other teacher, educator, instructor, coach, who encounter such a situation and WHO want to use Social Media in EDUcation. It would be interesting to know WHY this particular parent was reacting so, especially because none of its children were involved!

Let us remember the benefits of sports and body activities as well as the use of Technology and Social Media:

.

[DK] Speaking of Collaboration the following link ==> http://bit.ly/29qzY4k¬†is a google drive shared folder between several Physical Education Teachers around the United States who have joined and shared their ideas/resources for teaching Physical Education! Life Long Learning/Collaboration at it’s best!!!

.

The following paints a perfect example of how to incorporate ICT within Physical Education and it’s importance within Modern Education!! Follow ==> Andy Hair on Twitter ==> @MrHairPhysEd. [DK]

.

.

.
Framing in EDUcationThere are NEW ways of teaching AND especially about and WITH “Social Media” in <===> #ModernEDU <===> and co-author and online friend [Dan KIRSCH] will tell YOU!

[DK] There a variety of ways of teaching with Social Media! For instance, in my current position as a public K-12 Physical Education (PhysEd) teacher there are several methods in which I use Social Media in class (even though PhysEd is not usually associated with Social Media and/or ICT). First off, the major reason I¬†incorporate¬†Social Media within my PhysEd classes is to learn¬†new methods/activities to teach to my students! This includes; new lesson plans, how to set-up perceptual motor centers, instant activities, and cooperative learning activities etc…

The major player in learning these new activities via Social Media is the use of Twitter!! I have followed several PhysEd teachers on Twitter who utilize the Social Media platform to showcase what their students are learning as well as collaborating during twitter chats! This is a perfect segue into another reason why I use Twitter, which is to teach other PhysEd colleagues different activities and strategies I use within my own PhysEd classroom!! It provides a way of collaborating with other teachers around the country as well as continuing the process of being a Life Long Learner! The collaboration process via Twitter allows those Physed teachers and other teachers of different content areas to learn about new mobile apps and technologies that can be implemented with in the PhysEd classroom!

For example, the use of video recording apps, music apps, stopwatch apps, and other technologies are brought to the forefront via the collaboration that takes place on Twitter. Finally, it allows me to showcase what my students are learning during class. This is where blogging comes into play. I use my blog ==> mrkirsch.edublogs.org as way to show parents/guardians what their children are learning in PhysEd class; whereas without technological advances and platforms this would be possible!

Introduction

programmerman-animated[GM] Two authors WHO have collaborated already since looong (see below links, please) on Global-Collaboration and learning together about ICT and everything around it, Cyber Security, Privacy , Digital CitiZenship are trying to show YOU, dear readers, THE possibilities on THE How-To to integrate <===> Physical EDUcation <===> within ICT and Social Media to give YOU as parents and first THE students, learners THE possibility to GET out a MAXIMUM for their health and THEIR <===> Digital FootPrint <===> as well! YES, WE are discussing this ALSO as the students are creating blogs and can report about their experiences in sports, efforts made and they can control it through special software, even that there are ALSO <===> Wearables <===> on the market where the users need to have some knowledge about <===> Privacy and Cyber Security <===>, which WE will discuss later in another chapter of this blog post.

Both authors have STRONG knowledge about 21st Century TEACHing, Coaching and especially “Dan KIRSCH” has….

[DK] I have been teaching now for 9 years in a variety of content areas; such as Physical Education, ICT, and Technical Education. My heart has always been in Physical Education, but the experience I gained teaching ICT has lead me to wanting to integrate ICT within my Physical Education classes I currently teach. For instance, I have began to have my 5th grade students blog on their Chromebooks at the end of each week. The blog prompts consist of personal reflections on the HOWTO get better on certain physical education skills and become better teammates during game situations.

Technology: Fitness Tracker, Wearables, Apps…

[GM] Fitness Trackers: Trend or Tool!? Check the below article (2015) to find out more please:

Wearables, technical gadgets who connect with the internet, are getting more and more used and the customers are NOT aware of its risks and dangers, check below please.

Many consumers unaware that data doesn’t stay on their device

[START Text from “The downside of wearable fitness technology“]

But what most consumers don’t realize is a potential big downside to these smart devices: the potential loss of privacy. While the average consumer may think that the data collected lives on their device or in their app, it really lives on servers owned and maintained by the device providers. For this reason,Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has called these devices a “privacy nightmare.

[DK] A great method of incorporating ICT within Physical EDUcation is the use of QR Codes! A lot of Physical Education teachers use QR codes during perceptual motor/fitness centers as a method of having students investigate what exercise and/or activity they will be participating in that specific center. Why your health data isn’t as secure as it should be

nurse.

Your health status is perhaps the most intimate information anyone could know about you, so it should be your decision whether you share or keep your medical records private.

Unfortunately, hospitals, doctors’ offices and insurance companies frequently expose our health data through accidental loss, device theft, employee negligence, and data breaches perpetrated by hackers.

Even as the amount of health data rapidly increases, and data security laws become more punitive, medical ID theft continues to rise.

Problems Of Technology Integration In The PracTICE

Problems Of Technology Integration In The PracTICE

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo.

Problems Of Technology Integration In The PracTICE

programmerman2In this short blog, WE will talk about the integration of the new technologies, called “ICT“, which are NOT anymore that NEW, BUT in certain Communes and in different Government entities lots of people don’t NOT yet understood the importance of IT! They STILL work with the same OLD “Mentality”, which I call “Middle Age Mentality” as it is, sorry ===> WAKE UP! <=== and get used to the 21st Century Mentality!

The progress can’t get stopped, ONLY delayed, BUT that’s NOT the solution and people who are trying to STOP and/or delay the progress should remember THEIR “Responsibility” against the society, remembering that THEY were elected ¬†by THE society to give the people THE BEST of what is happening in the world, ALSO in the world of NEW TECHNOLOGIES!

.

SO… It is VERY important that the people who have a responsibility job to have the necessary knowledge of those 21st Century Tools and especially the skills on how to handle them! Apart from those skills there is ALSO a need to know how these new tools should get used together with humans, humans who are working on a daily base with them

.

Technology used in a BAD way has negative aspects for the health of the working staff, read the following blog to find out more:

.

When reading the above blog “Worst Technology Integration in the PracTICE“, you will understand a lot more and what the resulting health problems from such a situation will be for the working staff:

Worst Technology Integration In The PracTICE

.

sharing-iconStrange title of a blog, isn’t it? Reality OR fiction? It is REALITY, sorry to say that, I lived it! SO… I decided to share it with YOU dear readers to make sure that YOU don’t have to face it YOURSELVES as it could be very dangerous for YOUR health and as it is NOT professional at all what happens on some places (Communes and Government)! This story shows what is: a lack of knowledge, ignorance, naivety, miser, NO BUDGET¬†and the responsibility of some people! There is a deep need, a MUST for Quality-Control!

===> There is ALSO a MUST that persons who have a responsibility job to follow courses to have the knowledge about what is happening in the 21st Century while using the new technologies, called “ICT” (Information and Communication Technologies)! <===

.

===> NO “Communication” between the different services is lethal for an organization, remember the letter “C” in “ICT” which means “Communication“! <===

When Communes and Government are employing ONLY degrees or big diplomas who are dating more than ten (10) years ago then this is showing in practice where the competency is!!! And when they have ALSO staff members without the necessary 21st Century knowledge about ICT, then the situation comes out like described below…

This is certainly NOT a personal attack, BUT it needs to get said to go for BETTER and for QUALITY as well as for a healthy working environment!

When people with responsibility for the public act with a middle age mentality to integrate 21st Century technology then this comes out:

Scenario explication:

Imagine that YOU have a pool of eight (8) computers with Windows as OS (Operating System) for the public where:

  • Two (2) of them are NOT working (Out Of Order) since three months
  • Four of the PC’s run on Windows 7
  • Two (2) of the PC’s run on Windows XP (!!!)
  • Some of the PC’s run on Microsoft Office 2003 (!!!)
  • Some of the PC’s run on Microsoft Office 2007 (!!!)
  • Some of the PC’s run on¬†Microsoft Office 2010
  • On ALL of the PC’s persons can’t run applications who need Flash, Adobe applications as the updates are NOT made for months!

.

Flash Vulnerability

.

  • None of the PC’s has updated browsers, they ALL fail the update tests ===> check below!
  • NONE of the PC’s has an unzip program installed, so impossible to unzip attachments from the mails to make them readable!!! Their are OpenSource versions (FREE), why are they NOT installed!?
  • The Network Printer doesn’t work anymore since 1 week and the employees need to use a USB to copy the documents. Once the documents copied to the USB they need to go to their own office (I will explain later below...) where there are three PC’s and ONLY one where it is possible to print out on a different printer (YES, there are two printers…) who is NOT integrated in the Network, to print out the document and to handle it out to the users! A lot of walking around for... ūüė¶

.

SO… Let’s come now to the office PC’s:

  • There are three (3) PC’s
  • They run ALL on different Microsoft Office versions: Office 2003, Office 2007 ¬†and Office 2010 (!!!)
  • ONLY one (1) is able to print out (actually) on the printer who is NOT integrated in the Network!
  • It is ONLY possible to use OUTLOOK on one (1) of the PC’s, on others it doesn’t work!
  • On some of those three PC’s it isn’t possible to connect an USB on the front as the front interface is probably defect!!!

..

What needs to get said is that the employees can’t make any updates as they don’t have Administrator rights to do so!

.

What Does This Mean For The Working Staff!?

programmerman2

.

I just describe it in one phrase: THEY get nearly mad and that are UNACCEPTABLE WORKING CONDITIONS!!!

People who accept still to work on such places will face certainly one day serious health problems, body and brain!!!

.

.

In the practice this means that when someone is working on the office PC on an urgently needed document for the clientele needs to stop his work when somebody else needs to use the USB to print out a document, switching PC with other staff members! In the practice I needed on one day 6 hours to write ONLY one phrase on a Word document, because of such a confuse situation!!! Unbelievable BUT TRUTH!!!

.

Working under such conditions (there are still some other, which I don’t publish yet…) breaks down the energy of the staff and after three days working they are already out powered!!! The permanent switch from one “OS” installed to an other one (Windows XP and Windows 7), from Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2010 and the technical problems which the staff has to deal with on a daily base, adding to serve a frustrated and aggressive clientele isn’t a healthy work atmosphere!

.

This is an HORROR SCENARIO on a daily base and this in the 21st Century ūüė¶

.

It is to hope that one day the responsible people of such working (???) places will take their responsibility to change it to a ===> human way of working <===

.

How Could It Be Made Better?

.

thumbsupnathaneady01First of ALL, invite the responsible staff members (NOT ONLY one…) of that service and ask them in a meeting where the problems are! BE REALISTIC¬†and professional and don’t tell them to provide themselves a list of what is going wrong! When having read the above YOU MUST agree that those people don’t have neither the time, nor the working opportunities, nor the motivation anymore (impossible…) as ===> THEY are already OVERLOADED!!! <===

.

Health problems, increase of sick-leave are the consequences… read following blog to find out more:

.

A good idea might be ALSO to employ one of those persons for quality control as they know about what is going wrong!

===> Employ also people with field experience and NOT ONLY with degrees (diplomas), WE are talking about practice and NOT theory!!! BETTER even, let the responsible people work themselves in those¬†areas for at least two days to find out about…¬†<===

.

Since today (June 11, 2013) in a meeting, THE DIRECTION got an official report with ALL the mentioned problems! Even while not working anymore for that service I will keep an eye on it…

programmerman2I think that ‚ÄúIs MY Professional Development Up-To-Date?‚ÄĚ is the first question which you need to ask yourselves!¬†You can ONLY give BEST and QUALITY courses when knowing about the latest knowledge in a 21st Century Education. But ===>¬†HOW TO know this? <===

That‚Äôs a question I am getting asked very often from Teachers and Teacher-Students around the world through my Social Media presence on Twitter and I must say what I see on a global base doesn‚Äôt make me feel really happy! Lots of teachers around the globe are tweeting, which I encourage to do as much as possible by joining ALSO a so called ‚ÄúPLN‚Äú, a ‚ÄúPersonal Learning Network‚Äú, but ONLY a few shows a real¬†understanding, competencies, about what they are doing; even the so called ‚ÄúEdu-Stars‚ÄĚ in certain countries! • ‚ÄúIt is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.‚Ä̬†(Seneca the Younger)
  • ‚ÄúI cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.‚Ä̬†– Socrates
  • Education is what remains when we have forgotten all that we have been taught.¬†

George Savile, Marquis of Halifax (1633-1695) English statesman and author.

  • The whole object of education is‚Ķto develop the mind. The mind should be a thing that works.¬†Sherwood Anderson (1876‚Äď1941) American novelist and short story writer.
  • ¬†Education ‚Ķ has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading.¬†

    G. M. Trevelyan (1876-1962) British historian

  • You can lade a man up to th‚Äô university, but ye can‚Äôt make him think.¬†¬†Finley Peter Dunne (1867‚ÄĒ1936) U.S. author, writer and humorist.
  • Teachers open the door, you enter by yourself¬†¬†Chinese proverb.
