Advice for IoT, Smart-Home, Smart-TVs, etc.

As I already mentioned, years ago, in my tutorial <===> WHY Is It A MUST To Have Basics Knowledge Of Cyber-Security In A Connected Technology World!? <===> let us dig a bit deeper into IoT, Internet of Things and its implications of the users awareness AND responsibility.

Actually (January 2020 and even before…) there are a lot of warnings from Cyber-Security experts and EVEN from the FBI concerning Smart-homes and its connected devices:

SO NOW, after having bought a Smart-TV and other so-called smart devices which are connecting to the internet, WHAT to do? First of all: do YOU really need it, as nearly any devices are getting sold with IoT capabilities? IF NOT, WHAT to do?

  • Before connecting the power:
    • Check your Router settings and block any unknown devices!
    • IF you are able to access your IT device, change straight the manufacturer password; give it a STRONG password!

Concerning passwords: I recommend to use a Password-Manager such as:

With a Password-Manager you just need to remember a Master-Password and ALL other Passwords will get generated with a STRONG Password from the software itself!!

Let us talk about Hygiene…

Strange, I make an introduction about Hygiene in an Cyber-Security Blog, ISN’T it?!! Well, there is a reason behind:

WHEN WE use a computer, Smartphone and/or any OTHER technical device (such as cars as well…) WE need to take care of them! AND our body? The same: WE need to have the daily reflexes to make for sure that WE don’t expose it to invasions of bacteria, virus, etc. Examples given: brushing teeth, showers, washing the hands after a toilet go, washing the hands before and after a meal, etc. Wearing a Condom when having sex, a necessary protection! Well OUR condom for the technical devices is the Anti-Virus, a MUST for Any-devices!!! Any-Devices, Apple as well?!!! YES!!! Please check the WHY in my Curation below please:

WE are used to these reflexes, aren’t WE?! At least WE should be!! SO, for computers, Laptops, Smartphones, tablets (iPads etc.), IoT devices (Smart-Home), WE should do the same, they costs a LOT of money and expensive stuff should get taken care of!! THE OTHER reason as well is, THAT WE are using the internet with THEM and so WE are meeting OTHER people with OUR technical device (which ever one it is…).

SO, that exactly the same as WHEN WE are meeting (as persons) OTHER people in Real-World: WHEN WE have a flu, WE will infect OTHER persons with it and an epidemic will occur!! WHEN OUR technical devices (which ever one it is…), connected to the internet, are NOT Up-To-date with the latest Updates they are vulnerable to threats (see it as a virus, e.g.) and once infected, WE will infect ALL the OTHERS as well (epidemic…)!!

As WE use these #AnyDevices with #AnyOS on a daily base, WE SHOULD be aware and develop a sense of Responsibility to protect each other!

ICT RESPONSIBILITYWell, the above written is ONLY an introduction, please read my Blog posts in different languages (EN, FR, DE):

My courses about Cyber-Security were mandatory in Luxembourg (Europe) EDUcation in 2004, learn more here please:

WHY is Proactive-Thinking IMPORTANT and a MUST in Modern-Education with and about ICT!?

WHY is Proactive-Thinking IMPORTANT and a MUST in Modern-Education with and about ICT!?

.

Most dangerous phrase...

.

WHY is Proactive-Thinking IMPORTANT and a MUST in Modern-Education with and about ICT!?

Most dangerous phrase...In the last twenty (20) years Technology has changed a lot; with the internet and the use of ICT by nearly everybody around the world… ICT is present everywhere, nearly anybody is using smartphones, the internet, Social-Media and in the schools slowly but surely BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is getting accepted and ALSO used in courses. The same in Supermarkets: QR-Codes are nearly on any products, special QR-Codes on advertising panels to attract the customers for new products… BTW: by seeing how much people are running around in the Supermarkets with THEIR Smartphones switched on and talking with whom ever, (secretly) installed Beacons follow YOUR actions and show YOU over Advertising messages on YOUR Smartphones WHERE to GO for YOUR shopping preferences!!

It is a booming market for commercials to sell NEW products about ICT, IoT (Internet of Things) and anything else related to ICT; BUT there are NO laws and regulations (YET) about THE dangers by using THEM! As the MOST sold devices are already connecting to the internet (Smart-TVs, fridge, cameras, household devices…) the users just buy and DON’T get advised about Cyber-Security and Privacy dangers; which is seriously a BIG SHAME and a MUST!! :(((

Learn more:

Well, anybody knows (or at least SHOULD know) that every medal has its reverse! BUT: NEW devices are getting sold with NEW Technologies and the customers (WE users…) are NOT getting advised about the FIRST steps on the How-To to use THEM!!! Is THIS <===> Responsibility!??? <===> I guess NOT as everybody knows already NOW WHAT problems occur about Cyber-Security worldwide and ALSO about Privacy!

IF NOT, please check:

Backup A MUST With ALL The Malware AND Especially Ransomware Around! | CyberSecurity

Information LiteracyEach day (nearly) WE hear about Cyber-Security problems, such as “Ransomware” e.g. and the BEST solution to be prepared for such incidents is to make a “Backup“!

NOT sure if YOU followed OR if YOU are conscientious about WHAT is going around actually on the internet concerning “Malware” and “CyberSecurity“, BUT YOU SHOULD!!! THIS is a <===> Wake-UP Call <===> take it serious please! That is called ALSO <===> #ProactiveTHINKing <===> I will NOT post another article on the How-To to make a backup as there are already so much around, BUT I will show YOU WHY it is necessary for everyone to make a backup and delivering YOU the BEST articles and tutorials to do so…

Cross-platform malware is around and infects any OS (Operating System)!!! [START Text from Kaspersky] PC, Mac, Smartphone and Tablet users are under ever-evolving threat from computer viruses and malware. Taking action means understanding what you’re up against. Here’s a look at the major types of malware and their potential impact. [END Text from Kaspersky]

.

Learn more:

Follow my blog post about Backups:

WHAT SHOULD users know to do as FIRST STEPS!??

programmerman2Well, this is WHAT sales men (women) SHOULD tell users as a priority after having bought some NEW stuff interacting with the internet; whatever device(s) it is and handling out ALSO a print out of it from the manufacturer:

  • CHANGE STRAIGHT the Password from “Admin” to YOUR OWN created Password!!
  • Check the Privacy settings and reduce THEM on a maximum!!

Any guidelines for that!?

How can that naivety be changed!?

Well, first let us say that the word <===> naivety <===>ISN’T a bad word! Let us have a look on its definition:

What is naivety meaning? [Start Text from Wikipedia] Naivety (or naïvetynaïveté, etc.), is the state of being naive—having or showing a lack of experienceunderstanding or sophistication, often in a context where one neglects pragmatism in favor of moral idealism. One who is naive may be called a naif. [End Text from Wikipedia]

The users (WE) get confronted with new technical stuff which the manufacturers bring on the market without respecting a minimum of Cyber-Security and/or without the necessary knowledge about it!! THEIR main thing is to make money… That’s NOT serious, but so it is handled, as NO (NOT YET…) international laws are existing…

SO, problem is known since very long, BUT NO solutions YET provided!! Here comes NOW <===> #ProactiveTHINKING <===> in action…

As people, users (WE) didn’t get an education about Cyber-Security (in most countries…) Proactive-THINKing should be part of the curriculum of any Modern-EDUcation system which works with and about ICT!!

First of all I would recommend (mandatory) to teach first <===> Critical-THINKing <===> as it is THE base for quality <===> Proactive-THINKing!!

SO, WHAT is Critical-THINKing?

.

Please read the article from <===> https://www.elesapiens.com/blog/critical-thought-educating-competent-citizens/ <===> Critical thought is a cognitive process that proposes the systematic analysis of information, opinion and statements that we accept in our daily life as valid or true. It is a basic skill for a competent, free and responsible citizen

WHAT is Proactive-THINKing?

I invite YOU to read my tweets below, who are explaining mainly…

..

As WE are living in a Sharing-Economy, who doesn’t share photos and links!!?, WE MUST be aware NOT to share malware infected stuff as OTHERS would get their devices (Laptop, PC, computers, tablets, smartphones…) infected! Therefore WE MUST be on <===> Proactive-THINKing <===> to avoid such things happening!

A Holistic View Of WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future

A Holistic View Of WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future

WHAT Will Influence EDUcation In The Future?

programmerman-animatedThrough ICT the Real-World and especially the Virtual-World (both are influencing each other…) are changing quicker then WE can learn about, BUT WE must adapt to it and so must EDUcation! Therefore Universities must do research about the How-To to adapt and teaching about it… Luxembourg, a small country in Europe is doing so in September 2016, read more:

Luxembourg has already a “strategy to promote media literacy” as I got told in an interview, see image below please and click on the image to access the article.

.

Digital 4 EDUcation-Luxembourg-2015-2

Click the image please to access the article.

.

There is ALSO Finland WHO made a radical change to its EDUcation-Sytem, check below please: Finland uses <===> Phenomenon based learning

Meanwhile, before research finishes its studies, WE can already have a look on WHAT is NEW in Technology and WHAT probably would be of interest for EDUcation, as well as NEW Pedagogy Theories and NEW Trends:

.

DQ

.

Synthesizing Mind-5 Minds for the future

.

.

.

There will be a focus on Creativity as it was neglected too long in schools.

Because of the internet and Social Media there is NOW ALSO a new way of learning through collaboration, Global Collaboration, Peer-To-Peer Learning, mentoring, coaching:

AND as there is a global change in the way of HOW WE think about EDUcation, there are NOW ALSO <===> #TEACHerPreneurs:

There are ALSO drones and robots which could get easily integrated into Makerspaces and/or labs:

.

Blockchain

Click the image please to access the article.

.

WHEN WE talk about “Entrepreneurship“, then WE MUST ALSO talking about “Blockchain and Bitcoin” as THEY are a Game-Changer in the future, check below please:

AND as WE are using ICT: internet with iPad, tablet, smartphones, laptops, PCs, Macs, small computers such as Arduino, Raspberry PI and Co, the “Internet of Things” WE MUST ALSO have basics knowledge of “CyberSecurity“, check below please:

.

.

WE need ALSO to know about “Privacy“, “Digital Footprint” and “BIG DATA“, check below please:

In Europe, from the EU, there is already a manifesto for ModernEDU (eSkills), check below please:

And shouldn’t WE talk ALSO about “AI”, Artificial Intelligence?

And last but not least Apps. I put Apps on the END of this list as Apps are ONLY facilitators, it is Pedagogy FIRST!

.

With ALL the above mentioned possibilities, how can WE already NOW make a concept of LEARNing?

NO Framing in EDUcationWith ALL the above mentioned possibilities, how can WE already NOW make a concept of LEARNing? Please check my blog post below:

.

What is nearly for sure is THAT most courses will be PracTICE orientated, check my blog posts below, please:

And here WHAT probably will be the future, check below please:

How can WE get informed more about!? I advice YOU to read following (multilingual) books and to follow the mentioned persons below:

MUST read books to understand WHAT #ModernEDU is, see PIC below please.

.

MUST READ BOOKS

.

.

.

Framing in EDUcationMY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

.

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!

Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

Check out my blog posts:

Backup A MUST With ALL The Malware AND Especially Ransomware Around!

programmerman-animatedNOT sure if YOU followed OR if YOU are conscientious about WHAT is going around actually on the internet concerning “Malware” and “CyberSecurity“, BUT YOU SHOULD!!!

[END Text from Kaspersky]

programmerman-animatedFor private persons I suggest to make weekly backup, companies SHOULD do a daily backup! A good day to make weekly backups is certainly on the weekend for private persons; Over Twitter I give a reminder through the hashtag <===> #FSCD <===> which means <===> Friday Security Check Day <===> where YOU will find useful tips for BEST protection, backup included! Follow that hashtag, please…

With the low prices of external hard disks this will not be expensive and for sure less expensive as when YOUR computer is infected!!

Example for prices (Europe):

THE NEW Possibilities To LEARN AND Teach With ICT

THE NEW Possibilities To LEARN AND Teach With ICT

Evolution of Education: Wordle Logo

THE New Possibilities To LEARN AND Teach With ICT

First of ALL, WE need to THINK about OUR LEARNers, Students and WHAT skills THEY need to have in the 21st Century, NOT knowing WHICH are THE NEW jobs WHO could emerge, right!? Check below please.

.

what-skills-will-you-need-to-succeed-in-the-future_5061e259a60b6_w587

.

Known this NOW, WE have to THINK about the How-To WE as EDUcators, Teachers could provide THEM (LEARNers, Students) those skills, right!? FIRST lesson for TEACHers by using ICT is THAT TECHnology (Apps, programs…) isn’t THE MOST IMPORTANT! It’s <===> Pedagogy FIRST <===>, EDUcators, TEACHers MUST have an up-to-date <===> Professional Development <===> on it to know exactly WHEN to use the so called <===> EdTech Tools (Apps, programs…) <===> to make THEM wealth for effective TEACHing and LEARNing!

Well, please check my blog posts below please to understand BETTER:

.

Check out below on the <===> LEARNing To LEARN, please:

HOW Can WE LEARN About THE NEW Pedagogy!?

LEARNing Path For Professional 21st Century LEARNing By ICT PracTICE Concept

LEARNing2LEARN-2.

.

Over the years I developed and designed a possibility on the How-To use ICT for LEARNing and TEACHing which will prepare the LEARNers, students to fulfill the needs of the working market. It is mostly build up by coaching and NOT TEACHing as a <===> Win-Win situation is in mind and ALSO Collaboration <===> which are key factors in a modern society.

.

.

.

Let us first have a look on the How-To design a course which gives the learners, students some engagement as THEY could reproduce it themselves after YOU showed them the How-To and will bring in some creativity as well 😉

Framing in EDUcation

WE will NOT use ANYMORE THAT system as shown on left-hand side shown image, isn’t it 😉 WE will give OUR learners, students autonomy and coaching them to become <===> Life-Long LEARNers <===> by <===> LEARNing To LEARN <===> through collaboration, by using blogging, curation, Social Media and by putting them into the drivers seat. THEY will learn to take responsibility to survive in a bi-directional world (Real World and Virtual World are interacting…) and WE will coaching THEM as well to be responsible <===> Digital CitiZEN <===> by LEARNing about the basics of <===> Cyber Security <===> as well and ALSO about <===> eSkills <===> as it is THEIR world with ALL the problems present which THEY have to fight for and in it!.

.

Learn more:

Sounds like a lot, isn’t it!? It’s actually NOT that difficult when well organized and designed, please check below (it takes some time…):

Here is a road map for visual understanding 😉

programmerman-animatedWHAT is special this year with my participation on SID2016

I created a ===> #GlobalCollaboration #blog <=== from  (my pseudo on twitter) & @ICTPHMS  for  about . The authors are from Luxembourg/Europe (me), one female teacher from the USA and a male teacher from the USA WHO are using my blog post to learn together and sharing THEIR practice with YOU dear readers.

Well, there is a lot of different views about ===> Digital CitizenShip <=== WE will explore WHAT could be THE BEST way to teach and to learn about Digital CitizenShip (hashtag on Twitter is #digcit).

Here below the links of OUR blog post:

How does it come that I post Global-Collaboration blog posts? Well, once the #ProfessionalDevelopment is Upto-Date, one does understand THAT learning in a team brings out a win-win situation and that a generation exchange is benefit for all of the participants as anyone learns from each other. BTW: here below other Global-Collaboration blogs with teaching persons from Australia, USA, France, Luxembourg (me):
