WHAT gifts to buy for the kids for Xmas and Holidays?

Every year the same question, isn’t it!? WHY not thinking about to buy gifts from where and with that the kids will learn? It might be good to have a look on WHAT are the skills required for the future from youth, students, learners and upon that making your choice! Actually (2020) the trends are in the maker scene and coding scene! Engineers, coding people and ICT specialists are needed, the workforce, industry is searching!!

WHAT is the Coding Scene?

Coding is THE 21st Century skill. Coding enhances creativity, teaches young people to cooperate, to work together across physical and geographical boundaries and to communicate in a universal languageTechnology is part of our life, and coding brings it closer to you!

Two different projects will become ONE project for Xmas

Well, in previous tutorials <===> https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2019/11/03/first-steps-with-the-arduino-uno-maker-makered-makerspaces-coding-make-objects-rotating-with-a-stepper-motor/ <===> and in <===>  https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2018/04/08/first-steps-with-the-arduino-uno-r3-maker-makered-coding-scrolling-text-with-8×8-led-matrix/     <===> we learned about the how-to to make objects rotating as well as to display a scrolling text on a LED Matrix. NOW, we will combine those two for a nice Xmas decoration.

When fixing a small object there isn’t any problem, you just drill a hole of the diameter of the axis of the Stepper-Motor and fix it with hot glue or instant glue. BUT, when it comes to make rotating larger objects it will become unstable!! We need then also a larger support plate to fix the object. I used two techniques, one with a copper-plate of 0.8 mm (was still in my cellar for 30 years…) and/or a single-sided copper-Epoxy plate. Copper-plates are expensive and single-sided copper-Epoxy plates are on a less expensive price. They are about 0.65-1€/piece on Amazon.

For our Xmas project we will use a plastic star with LEDs which will get fixed the following way, check below please.

Make objects rotating with a Stepper-Motor | Tips and Tricks

Well, in a previous tutorial <===> https://gustmees.wordpress.com/2018/09/19/halloween-project-with-skull-arduino-blinking-leds-and-scrolling-eyes-maker-makered-makerspaces/ <===> we created a Halloween Skull and it was fix, didn’t rotate. Fun? YES, BUT more fun when it is rotating by using a Stepper-Motor; looks then as it would observe, control the space around it 😉 And it is very easy to create, only a Stepper-Motor, an Arduino NANO and a bit Code; the rest is a bit manual work to fix mechanically the motor. And with the right tools the mechanical work is a piece of cake 😉. We will discuss ONLY the mechanical works and for the the code (Sketch) for the Arduino, please look at the following tutorial:

When fixing a small object there isn’t any problem, you just drill a hole of the diameter of the axis of the Stepper-Motor and fix it with hot glue or instant glue. BUT, when it comes to make rotating larger objects it will become unstable!! We need then also a larger support plate to fix the object. The mechanical works

First of all chose on what material you would like to fix the Stepper-Motor: this could be metal, plastic, cardboard or wood. As I like recycling, I ask in the Supermarket to get an empty wooden wine box. The Supermarket sometimes opens a six-pack of wine bottles in a wooden case (box) and they are happy NOT to recycle it themselves 😉 Here below an example for a Halloween project…

.
Desription:
Drill a hole with a 6 mm drill in your support, then use the 32 mm Step-Drill to make the hole diameter fit to the diameter of the Stepper-Motor. Fix the Stepper-Motor. I used a copper-plate for having a large surface to fix the chosen rotating object. The axis from the Stepper-Motor is made from brass and that fits very well with copper for soldering them together. For the soldering you need an 80 Watt solder iron with a temperature of 430° C (806° F). Before you start soldering: clean the copper-plate, take off the patina first!! Same step for the single-sided Copper-Epoxy plate!!

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, MakerSpaces, Coding | Xmas Star with NeoPixels WS2812B

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO R3 | Maker, MakerED, MakerSpaces, Coding | Xmas Star with NeoPixels WS2812B

.

NeoPixels WS2812B Xmas Star

.

Xmas Star with NeoPixels WS2812B made from cardboard

Xmas Star with cardboard and NeoPixels WS2812BSoon there will be Christmas and decorations are getting put around the house worldwide as it is tradition since ages to do so. That’s also the time for tinkerers, makers to GET some new ideas. Well, I thought on a project which everybody could do without having a 3D-Printer NOR a Laser cutter at home and not having access to them on other places. SO, I tried out to create a Xmas-Star from cardboard using an Arduino UNO and Neopixels…

I recently bought 1 Meter of Neopixels WS2812B with 60 LEDs and tried it out while wife was looking at it and she told me if that wouldn’t be an idea for making a Christmas-Decoration, e.g. a star. I took that challenge and a day later it was working, LOL 😉 I used a 3,5 mm thick cardboard from a red wine box which was stable enough to create the project.

The measures are 160 mm x 160 mm and there are 8 segments with an angle of 45° (8 x 45 = 360°). This is quiet easy to draw on cardboard… Once the lines drawn, up from the middle line draw a 1 cm to the left and to the right so that it makes a 2 cm width of each segment. On the middle cut out a square hole from 1,6 cm. That is the perfect outfit for the Christmas-Star. Cut it out with a sharp cutter and paint it with the color of your choice, I used green… NOW take the 1 meter long ribbon and cut off 8 x 4 LEDs. THEN take off the protection paper from the Neopixels WS2812B ribbon and glue them on the cardboard, see PIC please.

Find below, please, a drawing with the dimensions and where to cut out:

Dimensions of the Xmas Star

You may have a look on this Tutorial to know a bit more about the handling of Neopixel LEDS, please:

The project itself by cabling is actually VERY easy, ONLY 3 wires, the MOST work is on the mechanical part by cutting the cardboard, painting, soldering the Neopixels WS2812B strip and to put everything into a box with the necessary parts, while drilling, etc. WE will see this in detail by following PICS… But first let us solder and interconnecting the 8 x 4 Neopixels LEDs strips, you need to follow the arrows on the strips to connect each of the 8 x 4 LED strips, thus meaning: see PICs please:

Follow the arrows

.

Please have a look on how this will look in our project; we use color flat cable to make the connections.

.

The flat cable will get fixed with hot-glue on the cardboard.

Front side view of the Xmas star

.

Once the 8 x 4 LED strips are interconnected, you can connect the other 28 LEDs to the point marked with “START” and connect them to the ARDUINO UNO board through a screw terminal to make the first tests. Please check the tutorial below with the code for the How-To:

IF everything is working, hopefully, we can go for the integration of the components into a housing. TIP: prepare the ARDUINO UNO (NANO) already with the code uploaded and test after each 4 LED strips connected to make sure it will work!! it’s BETTER to invest time for NOT later having trouble and NOT knowing from where the fault comes 😉

Well, you have seen NOW the different mechanical steps and the soldering inside the housing, that’s the preparation, now we have to connect as well the Xmas star to the Arduino… We will use a 3 x 0.75 mm² cable to do so, find below, please, some PICs which show you the How-To, as well as the components with links to purchase them (I used AMAZON.DE), feel FREE to purchase them where you want:

First Steps with the Arduino-UNO | Maker, MakerED, Coding | Playing Music

ARDUINO-XMAS-SONGS-MUSIC..

Playing Music

I was looking for a quick project with the Arduino which could get realized in less than half an hour and with the components from my Arduino Starter-Kit. I found this one for Christmas Music playing <===> Christmas songs with an Arduino Uno and a piezo buzzer <===> which I tried out as actually it was Christmas time. It was very easy to follow on the How-To… Please check the video below, where you can see and hear it in action.

.

.

There is not much to say about it as it is very well described in the tutorial. Check below please:

And as you know me, when creating a blog post, I give a bit more information about the theory and useful knowledge… Digging into it to understand about what it is 😉

Play Melody

programmerman-animatedThis example makes use of a Piezo Speaker in order to play melodies. We are taking advantage of the processors capability to produde PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals in order to play music.

A Piezo is nothing but an electronic device that can both be used to play tones and to detect tones. In our example we are plugging the Piezo on the pin number 9, that supports the functionality of writing a PWM signal to it, and not just a plain HIGH or LOW value.

The first example of the code will just send a square wave to the piezo, while the second one will make use of the PWM functionality to control the volume through changing the Pulse Width.

Actually (2017) the trends are in the maker scene and coding scene! Engineers, coding people and ICT specialists are needed, the workforce, industry is searching!!

What is the maker scene?

I invite you to read my bog post about it below, please:

Variable Power Supply-work in progressIn the Makerspaces as well as in Maker-EDUcation the creativity and PracTICE are getting fostered to be prepared for what the workforce and the industry are needing! The kids, students, learners are Learning-By-Doing and that is with fun involved also! They are not only tinkering around but they get coached in a “NO Hierarchy” space; in Luxembourg. SO, they can communicate with each other to solve problems and as well later also doing the same through the Social-Media and forums. They learn also by that way to build teams and are able for team-work later once out of school.

.

Team-Work is one of the essential skills which students, learners need to have for the future! Read also my blog post below, please, which explains WHAT the skills for the future are:

Learn more by reading my blog posts from Makerspaces in Luxembourg:

In the above blog posts you will find information what is happening and you can contact the responsible persons for more information; let your kids go there and have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing! 😉

What is the coding scene?

Coding is the 21st Century skill. Coding enhances creativity, teaches young people to cooperate, to work together across physical and geographical boundaries and to communicate in a universal languageTechnology is part of our life, and coding brings it closer to you!

There is a BIG trend in Education worldwide; THE <===> Maker-Movement <===> and everybody is asking themselves on the How-To to follow and WHAT to do with the kids and at which age to start! Well, actually it isn’t that difficult as most think 😉 YOU can START it even in the classroom without having a “MakerSpace“, for the beginning! START with easy and low budget stuff; Xmas is close (I write this blog post on 22-11-2016), so WE will create a Xmas project as low as for +/- 5-6 € (6 US $).

A bit theory before WE start with the PracTICE 😉 If YOU don’t want to read it and GO straight on for the PracTICE, check below!

BUT, let us first start to learn more about “Maker“, “Maker-ED” and “Makerspaces“, please check my blog posts below:

ALL about that BIG trend is actually about <===> Creativity <===> and through tinkering <===> Learning-By-Doing <===> the kids, adults and seniors will find and develop THEIR creativity! And YOU <===> EDUcators, TEACHers <===> will guide THEM as a coach through the learning process 😉 YOU will learn YOURSELVES also from the sparkling creativity of your learners and together as a team YOU will GROW! Creativity is NO magic, it just needs to GET started!

.

As I treat myself as I would treat my students, learners by doing (creating) a project, WE will discuss my different tries as well <===> Learning-By-Doing <===> mixed together with <===> Critical-Thinking and Proactive-Thinking <===> Sounds strange, isn’t it? 😉

THE planning

First comes the idea and the Deep-Thinking about it… THEN as the idea concept is made (in the brain and/or on cold print), WE need to find a store from where we can get the stuff. Make you a list of your local “Tinkering stores” and “Electronic Stores” and visit them also to find out WHAT they have in stock, take some catalogs (if present…) and probably YOU will get NEW ideas for next projects as well… DON’T forget to plan your journey for your purchasing; especially when the stores are in the city (searching for a parking, heavy traffic, etc.). FYI: I needed 40 minutes in the morning at 11:00 h to find a parking place!

SO, for my country Luxembourg, here below the addresses:

THE PracTICE, let’s start

Wooden 3D Xmas Tree

First unpack all the bought stuff and check for the How-To to assemble it. As you can see in left-hand side image the trees (there are two in the package) are made from thin wood and are NOT painted. WE have now two different possibilities: spraying the trees with a green spray (must be done outdoor or close to an open place to outdoor because of toxic gases! Some persons could also be allergic to the gazes…) or let the kids, students, learners paint them by themselves.

Please check below the different steps. Click on the images to enlarge them…

Unpacked and assembled; under a minute.

Once the Xmas tree assembled take the “Copper Wire LEDS (10 LEDS)” and wire them around the 3D Xmas Tree and switch it on to see the result. please check photos 7 and 8.

I tried out two different ways: wiring the “Copper Wire LEDS” from the top to the bottom (8 LEDS were visible) and from the bottom up to the top (6 LEDS were visible. Check the above images (7 and 8), please, to see the results. THIS way of tinkering around doesn’t need any tools and could get used in any classroom up from early age under coaching of  Educators, Teachers.

You might also want to glue the wires to the Xmas Tree, possible also… Other possibilities are to drill in holes in the tree and to pass the wire through it. Experiment a bit with it and try to find different solutions, for that cheap price! <===> Color of Xmas Tree: with spray and/or painting by students, learners, kids <===> creativity <===> LET it GO, LET it FLOW!

Try out different ways and let me know by sending me photos in with your creations which I will add then to my blog post with referencing YOU!

I am trying to give You the THINKing behind a project (Which EVER one…) LEARNing-By-Doing, should GET done with Students, LEARNers THAT way; let THEM try out till THEY find the appropriate solution. Let THEM create a blog post about it where THEY can report about THEIR adventures and HOW THEY solved the problem for BEST… Of course with photos and with the written experience; #CriticalTHINKing and #ProactiveTHINKing will emerge 😉 As well as #PracTICE of course…

As a Coach You observe and guide THEM with “Couldn’t THERE be ANOTHER way to realize it?”; Make THEM curios about to challenge THEMSELVES for BETTER 😉
Have FUN!

End Of The Year: Holidays Are Also Charity Days, Don’t Forget Please…

.

golden-heart-iconNearly any Culture worldwide is using the holidays of end of the year and Christmas, called also Xmas, to spend gifts and/or money to the poor on this planet. Don’t forget them and have a look on some good examples below on how to do…

.

sharing-iconWhen I do something for other people, I feel good, “says Peterson“. When you do something voluntarily for others, not only for its own interests, it is rewarded. In some mysterious way, serve as an “altruistic” (the opposite of selfishness) gives his own life more important. It seems that nature have put it in our genes, or that people are happy when they have the spirit of sharing, community spirit.

So, dear readers, make yourself feeling good and share this knol (unit of knowledge) with other people, thanks in advance 😉

Xmas & New Year @ Egypt

[MAK] In my country “Egypt” with a population of 80 millions, and the majority are Muslims, the Christmas has a different taste.  I have so many Christian friends; some are celebrating Christmas at 25th December and others on 7th of January.  I share with them the celebration whatever they do.  Sometimes I go with them to the Churches, and sometimes I just call to say Merry Christmas. Exactly, the same they share me all Muslim celebrations. On the New Year everybody celebrate.  Not necessary by drinking wine or whiskey, but starting a new year needs to wish all the best for everyone. 🙂

Xmas & New Year @ Luxembourg

.
[GM]: In my country Luxembourg with a population of 502,000 habitants only (2009-2010), one of the smallest country in the world, and the majority are Christians, there are different ways to celebrate Christmas. More and more people are using the Xmas Holidays for spending some nice vacation, others stay at home and have a good meal together with family and very faithful people are even visiting the church at midnight for the “Matins“…
 .
.
.
.
.
What are Luxembourgers eating on Christmas eve and how do they celebrate it?

Personally I spend the 24th of December together with my spouse and a good meal at home and the 25th of December is getting celebrated by a good meal together with the family of my spouse. This year we will have 14 people invited by us at home. We will not anymore distributing gifts to the adults as years ago, but only the younger will get gifts and also the parents will get an envelope with collected money from the children as a gift.

.

We were also watching the film “Polar Express“. The Polar Express is a 2004 motion capture animated film based on the children’s book of the same title by Chris Van Allsburg. Written, produced, and directed by Robert Zemeckis, the human characters in the film were animated using live action performance capture technique, with the exception of the waiters who dispense hot chocolate on the train, because their feats were impossible for animated actors to achieve.
.
What do I and my spouse eating for the 24th of December?

.

As there will be the 25th of December again a big meal, so we decided this year to eat a “Fondue bourguignonne“, who is very digest… But we take our time and we have a good “starter” (entrée) who consists fromFoie gras” and some cheese with a good white wine, a “Muscat de Coyeux” (Muscat de Beaumes de Venise). And the Fondue with a good red wine an “Amarone”, Della Valpolicella 2006 de Lamberti.

.

What will get served on 25th of December with the whole family together?
