WHAT gifts to buy for the kids for Xmas and Holidays?
Every year the same question, isn’t it!? WHY not thinking about to buy gifts from where and with that the kids will learn? It might be good to have a look on WHAT are the skills required for the future from youth, students, learners and upon that making your choice! Actually (2017) the trends are in the maker scene and coding scene! Engineers, coding people and ICT specialists are needed, the workforce, industry is searching!!
What is the maker scene?
I invite you to read my bog post about it below, please:
In the Makerspaces as well as in Maker-EDUcation the creativity and PracTICE are getting fostered to be prepared for what the workforce and the industry are needing! The kids, students, learners are Learning-By-Doing and that is with fun involved also! They are not only tinkering around but they get coached in a “NO Hierarchy” space; in Luxembourg. SO, they can communicate with each other to solve problems and as well later also doing the same through the Social-Media and forums. They learn also by that way to build teams and are able for team-work later once out of school.
.
Team-Work is one of the essential skills which students, learners need to have for the future! Read also my blog post below, please, which explains WHAT the skills for the future are:
In the above blog posts you will find information what is happening and you can contact the responsible persons for more information; let your kids go there and have fun by LEARNing-By-Doing! 😉
What is the coding scene?
Coding is the 21st Century skill. Coding enhances creativity, teaches young people to cooperate, to work together across physical and geographical boundaries and to communicate in a universal language. Technology is part of our life, and coding brings it closer to you!

For ANY projects WE will create there are books and also online documentations which WE will need to learn from and to GET NEW ideas as well. I will propose to YOU a selection of books and links which I have read and learned from as well; links which I use as well to incorporate into my tutorials as ALSO YouTube videos to learn from.
.
..
I bought these books on Amazon, find the references for ordering them here, please:
WE are really lucky today because of ICT and the internet to learn about electronics; it was NEVER THAT easy as today!! WE can find simulation software as well as schematics drawing software online and/or for download as for FREE (Open Source and FREEWARE). I remember 49 years ago when I was 12 years old and tinkering around, using curiosity to find out on the How-To things were working by disassembling them, whatever it was… Later, I was working after school (12 1/2 years old starting till 20 years…) around on any place in the village (farmer, café, gardening for private persons, etc.) to earn some money to be able to buy me necessary stuff for my electronics lab…
Nowadays WE GET all the necessary stuff online and WE DON’T need anymore to purchase an oscilloscope and a Multimeter for measuring as one can simulate everything straight on through FREE software. I am feeling HAPPY for that as it allows LEARNERS from any society status to learn about electronics!
Please check below for useful articles on Software:

Through ICT the Real-World and especially the Virtual-World (both are influencing each other…) are changing quicker then WE can learn about, BUT WE must adapt to it and so must EDUcation! Therefore Universities must do research about the How-To to adapt and teaching about it… Luxembourg, a small country in Europe is doing so in September 2016, read more:
Luxembourg has already a “strategy to promote media literacy” as I got told in an interview, see image below please and click on the image to access the article.

There is ALSO Finland WHO made a radical change to its EDUcation-Sytem, check below please: Finland uses <===> Phenomenon based learning
Meanwhile, before research finishes its studies, WE can already have a look on WHAT is NEW in Technology and WHAT probably would be of interest for EDUcation, as well as NEW Pedagogy Theories and NEW Trends:
Because of the internet and Social Media there is NOW ALSO a new way of learning through collaboration, Global Collaboration, Peer-To-Peer Learning, mentoring, coaching:
WHEN WE talk about “Entrepreneurship“, then WE MUST ALSO talking about “Blockchain and Bitcoin” as THEY are a Game-Changer in the future, check below please:
AND as WE are using ICT: internet with iPad, tablet, smartphones, laptops, PCs, Macs, small computers such as Arduino,Raspberry PI and Co, the “Internet of Things” WE MUST ALSO have basics knowledge of “CyberSecurity“, check below please:
MY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?
Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!?
YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉
I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!
I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!
Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

What Are THE BEST Ways Of TEACHing And LEARNing? | Ideas And Reflections As ALSO MY PracTICE
Online since 1998 and giving ICT courses since 2002 as an pedagogical/andragogical (Andragogy) instructor I was reading a lot of multilingual books (French, German, English) about Pedagogy <===> 21st Century Learning and Teaching: Multilingual Books Recommendations <===> and I was reading a lot ALSO on the internet from renowned Universities online (mostly from Canada) which helped me to progress for an Up-To-Date Professional Development.

Of course WE can’t say by 100% WHAT is THE BEST ways of TEACHing and LEARNing, BUT WE can share OUR PracTICE on the How-To WE did it and analyze it over the years by adapting for BETTER on each day… Through using Social Media, especially Twitter and connecting with other EDUcators, TEACHers, Instructional Coaches, WE can accelerate it even!
Feedback from Social Media Twitter and interesting question:
On 26-02-2016 I got a very interesting question posed by @EricssonCareers on Twitter, which I can’t answer with ONLY 140 characters and therefore I will answer it here in my blog post. See PIC below, please:
.
.
Well, through the proposed way of learning in this blog post the learners, students will learn:
Asking for feedback by peers through Social Media an getting BETTER through it…
Having the mastery of ICT and Technology…
Being informed about new trends and getting NEW ideas, inspirations for new markets…
…
.
Benefit for future innovators: by having learned in such an environment students, learners are used to work (learn) with a brain without pressure and will become “Open Minded” as well… A brain WHO doesn’t feel any pressure is FREE and ideas will flow, as it enhances creativity… And creativity is the major factor for innovation!

PracTICE: How DOES The Internet Help ME In My Private Life, Professional Development, Job AND Career
I am a pioneer and was always one of the first to try out NEW stuff since my young age, very curious about it WHAT that could be and WHAT would be my advantage to use it. Let us call it <===> Learning By Doing <===> to get some knowledge, skills and experience out of that adventure 😉 Did I say <===> adventure!? <===> YES, it is actually! An adventure to discover NEW stuff where one doesn’t know where it will end 😉 BUT it is a BIG fun ALSO and one learns a lot through it! This attitude brings one ALSO to a <===> Life-Long LEARNing <===> strategy which I wouldn’t miss, whatever age one has! I am actually (2015) aged sixty (60), retired since 2014 (pedagogical/andragogical ICT Instructor) and STILL learning on a daily base as it is a pleasure for me.
It is ALSO a pleasure for me to share my knowledge with OTHERS (especially EDU related people) on Social Media Twitter, through curation and blogging. The internet (I started 1998) is a GREAT resource and a wonderful <===> Virtual World<===> which needs to get discovered and where WE need to know ALSO its dangers, same as in <===> Real World <===> let us call it <===> Awareness and Digital CitiZENship!
Before WE start, the above title is a long one, let us break it down to the different Topics: private life, Professional Development, job and career.
How Does The Internet Help ME In My Private Life!?
As already mentioned I started using the internet in 1998 with a very slow 56k Dial-Up Modem(which made ALSO a lot of noise…) and I found out about the search engines and the How-To to find information on it. Then I discovered about Cyber Security problems, virus and Co by reading specialized Computer-Magazines. YES, that existed already at that time!!! I was telling OTHERS about those threats; THEY told me that I am crazy as THEY didn’t realize its existence! SO… I continued learning about it and I became a vigilant internet user. Knowledge and skills which I developed through the years, see on the bottom of this blog post, please. BUT, as a normal user, how can the internet help me in my private life!?
Well, a lot actually: I can check for Restaurants, I can book my holidays online, I can buy stuff online, I can book nearly WHATEVER I want online, I can search for BEST prices online for WHATEVER, I can prepare my holidays with special interactive maps (ThingLink), I can use “Google maps” to find my way, even with “Streetmap” which makes my traveling much easier, I can find cooking and baking recipes as well as tutorials on YouTube, I can share my experience and life experience through blogging and curation…
How Does The Internet Help ME In My Professional Development!?
Because of the internet I have a 24/7 access and I can learn whenever, wherever I want: SO… I can plan my learning on my OWN pace, alone as an autodidact (self-directed learning) and/or through Social Media Twitter. I use curation on each day and I develop through curation my <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management. I use ALSO blogging with WordPress. And I use Twitter as well. Through the internet I learn much more quicker, especially through <===> curation!
I found a new job because of my ICT skills, even that I became an “pedagogical/andragogical ICT course instructor“, check below please for the full story:
L’auteur Gust MEES est Formateur andragogique / pédagogique TIC, membre du “Comité Conseil” de “Luxembourg Safer Internet” (LuSI), appelé maintenant BEESECURE, partenaire officiel (consultant) du Ministère de l’éducation au Luxembourg du projet ”MySecureIT“, partenaire officiel du Ministère du Commerce au Luxembourg du projet ”CASES” (Cyberworld Awareness andSecurityEnhancementStructure).

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?
Firts of all I get a lot of profit out of the internet and the connections which I make with others: Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!!
Keywords necessary for me to create this blog post: Life experience, manager, competitive, competition, adapting, all-round talents, image editing, image editing for the web, websites, curation, Social Media, editing, collaboration, team-work, idea development, Social Media knowledge, learning to learn, Life-Long Learning, daily curation, integrating Global Collaboration,
UnLEARNing THE OLD, ReLEARNing, LEARNing To LEARN / How To!?
UnLEARNing THE OLD, ReLEARNing, LEARNing To LEARN / HowTo!? WHAT!??? I hear very often (too often) this phrase “As a TEACHer, professor, I want to teach my whole career THE SAME way as I do NOW AND WE did it ALWAYS SO!“. Aaaaargh, when I hear that phrase I get even more grey hair as I already have 😉
.
.
NEW research has shown that WE as TEACHing persons did it WRONG the last centuries and that WE need to focus more on the students, learners. It is NOT us, THE TEACHing persons WHO are the most important, BUT the students, learners! The role of TEACHers, EDUcators has changed as I mentioned this in a previous post <===> SO, What’s THE CHANGE For Teachers In 21st Century Education!?.
That post explains already the How-To of THE CHANGE, BUT let us GO deeper in detail about WHAT WE need to focus on and WHAT will help us to adapt to it.
A MUST Read Book From Howard GARDNER To Understand What The Skills Are THAT Students Need In 21st Century!
MOST of Educators, Teachers are struggling about the How-To of teaching THEIR students, learners for a future WHERE NOBODY knows WHAT the jobs would be as ICT together with Social Media and the “Big Data” will create NEW opportunities for entrepreneurs in the ICT sector. New Apps will get created, there is a market for Cyber-Security and Privacy, there is a need for “Community Managers”, and much more…
.
.
.
.
.
.
SO… WE need to find a “Leitfaden” for WHAT WE should teach OUR students, learners to be ready for a very quick changing world, a “LEARNing-Path” for “Life-Long LEARNing” to adapt quickly to THAT situation (quick changing world)! There is NO ONE SOLUTION existing, WE need to integrate different skills, theories, PracTICE into a whole to achieve THAT very hard task!!!
One size doesn’t fit all! I recommend to YOU strongly to read the book from Howard GARDNER“5 Minds for the Future“; it SHOULD be a MUST read for any teaching person 😉

EDUcators, TEACHers, Instructors, Professors Need To Become MORE Professional!
.
.
I am sixty (60) now and WHAT I see online, hearing from students (and encountered as a student as well…) about the “Professional Development” from EDUcators, Teachers, Professors, Instructors in EDUcation, it gives me more grey hair as I already have!!! 😦 Since ages THEY are behind and NEVER will be Up-To-Date!!!
This needs to get considered and “DeepTHINKing” about it is a MUST!!!
I created several blog posts together with online friends on <===> Global-Collaboration <===> which will give YOU some insights, tips and tricks, advice on the How-To to change this, check below please:
SO… That was about <===> Professional Development <===> above, BUT aren’t there any other advice, research papers about it!? YES, please check my curation below please:
WE Have Now ALSO Social Media To LEARN Together On Global Collaboration
Sounds strange, learning together on a <===> Global Collaboration <===> WITH <===> Social Media <===>, especially <===> Twitter <===>!??? Well, I agree, at first moment it is 😉 I was thinking the same on the beginning and didn’t know actually WHAT to do with Twitter in 2009!!! Actually NOW (30-11-2015) I have posted more than 101k (101,365) posts (tweets) and I have a “Google Page Rank” of 5/10!!!
I used blogging (WordPress) and Twitter together wit Curation for my LEARNing and Coaching, as well for <===> Global Collaboration <===> check below please:
LEARNing Path For Professional 21st Century LEARNing By ICT PracTICE Concept
I have seen people on Social Media Twitter and others, especially EDUcators and TEACHers struggling on the How-To prepare students and learners for future jobs which don’t exist yet and which NO ONE knows WHAT they will be. Countless were the posts “But how will I teach my students, learners when I don’t know what the jobs will be in the future!?” So I designed a concept with ICT PracTICE which can adapt to any situation, please check below:

Reflecting After Six (6) Years Online On Twitter On A Blog Post
First of all, it isn’t NOW after six years (2015) that I reflect about Twitter, I do this very often actually on Twitter itself! BUT it is NOW that I feel it necessary to post it ALSO in a blog post.
Let us talk about the reality first: MOST people DON’T understand THAT WHEN THEY post the whole world will see these posts instantly, YOU are NOT anymore at home OR in the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> YOU are LIVE! 😉 .
After reading THAT, especially EDUcators, TEACHers, YOU SHOULD <===> understand (THE part which YOU are NOT GOOD enough about it, most of YOU!)<===> and especially visualized it internally in YOUR brain (found it back!?) WHAT YOU should publish and WHAT NOT!? Anything published will GET found by OTHERS from the WHOLE GLOBE! THUS meaning: poor learnt and published will GET seen by learners, students and THEY believe it!!!? Is THAT credible!??? Half-baked stuff posted by EDUcators, TEACHers!!!??? Cant’be possible would MOST readers say, BUT that is the truth! Is THAT EDUcation!!!??? NO, NOT AT ALL!!!
WHEN LEARNing is done by EDUcators TEACHers online, mostly through <===> Twitter Chat’s <===> it SHOULD BE professional, and the chat’s shouldn’t get used MOSTLY for chatting WHATEVER, NO talk, talk, talk…! It looks to me that MOST are people WHO don’t go out from house for socializing in Cafés, Pubs and who are using the chat’s mostly for socializing! THAT is NOT LEARNing, excuse-me, please 😉
.
And as those who know me, a music video sometimes in my blog posts 😉
Well, that is actually NOT that difficult, THINK on the word <===> professional <===> please! Publish ONLY relevant stuff on Twitter and make the <===> Talk, talk, talk in a private NOT PUBLIC place <===!!! Readers DON’T need to see everything, show them ONLY the professional of YOUR profession 😉
WHAT could be places WHERE EDUcators. TEACHers could do that?
Example:
Where teamwork happens
Yammer is your company’s private social network that helps you and your teams stay on top of it all. Start conversations, collaborate on files, and organize around projects so you can go further—faster.
Social Media and Twitter have more positive aspects as MOST people THINK, especially for EDUcation, EDUcators, TEACHers and Students! One just needs to know THE PROFIT to take out from it! First of all it is about connecting with OTHERS and to create a “PLN” <===> Personal [Professional] LEARNing Network <===> and through that to build its OWN “PKM” <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management <===> for its OWN <===> Professional Development <===> and ALL of this on ITS OWN PACE!!! NO STRESS, YOU decide WHEN to do it… I DIDN’T have to follow like shown in the picture on the left-hand side 😉I am a self-directed LEARNer, an autodidact.
Through curation, Social Media Twitter and blogging I build up a growing followers community from WHOM WE learn from each other and through Social Media Twitter I boost my “SEO” (Search Engine Optimization) and my “Google Page Rank” of all them 😉
My blog was selected for “BLOGOSPHERE Whether they are in Luxembourg or abroad, discover the bloggers making waves in Luxembourg. http://www.wort.lu/en/blogs
As You could see from the above mentioned I earned a lot, I took out a lot of profit for my private life, my professional life and for my career! Read more below please:
It is all about to know the How-To on combining different skills together to make it a whole! Check the image below please and buy the book from <===> Howard GARDNER “5 Minds For The Future” <===> to LEARN more about it 😉

Andragogy, Adult Teaching!? WHAT Is Different From Normal Student Teaching!?
It is a question which I get asked very often “Andragogy, Adult Teaching!? WHAT Is Different From Normal Student Teaching!?“. Well, first remember that adults and seniors are OUT of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> since long or very long, THEY are NOT used anymore for learning! That is a very important fact to consider first before YOU start teaching adults and seniors. ALSO, adults and seniors are NOW (as out of school) mostly more focused on the benefits THEY could have in their private life and are willing to learn stuff which fits to their needs in private life!
Another very important point to consider is that a lot of adults, seniors have a FEAR against schools and school-teaching, they made bad experiences with teachers AND still thinking on the stress with tests! AND they are used to an OLD outdated EDUcation System which told them that learning is finished once reached the degree (the diploma in the pockets)! BTW: a RETHINKING of EDUcation for <===> Life-Long Learning is a MUST! As well as how the diplomas are getting handled and valued: e.g. A diploma today doesn’t show any professional development made!!! My proposition is to create the diplomas as: first diploma after school is “A, B,C etc…”, then the professional development (followed courses) should get added such as e.g. A1-2015-1: first professional development made in 2015, one course. A1-2015-5 first professional development made in 2015, five courses, and so on…
This would make the diplomas more valuable as the workforce would recognize them much more than normal ones where they don’t see straight on if a person has followed courses after school or not…
THE factor time is ALSO very important, as said already above, adults and seniors need MORE time to learn as NOT used anymore for learning! Prepare YOUR courses by considering longer sessions!
And as (already) MOST of YOU know me, a music video, related to the TOPIC 😉
.
.
Chose ALSO a room who doesn’t look sterile (white color) as it would remind them school again! And of course DON’T give the courses in a school! Sounds strange!? Think on the psychological background of fear 😉 Make the learners feel comfortable!
And last but not least, DON’T teach adults, seniors with a normal pedagogy, as THEY won’t accept it to get treated as 12 year old persons!!! THEY ARE OUT OF SCHOOL and they want to get treated as adult, <===> mature persons<===>!
SO… How To Teach Adults, Seniors!?
First of all, I mentioned it already above, DON’T let them feel like being in school and that YOU are a teacher, educator! Tell them that YOU will be THEIR coach who is guiding them and NOT teaching them and that THEY have a certain autonomy in the “Learning Room” (NOT Classroom!) They are allowed to move around in the “Learning Room”, searching help among their peers by respecting the noise level, copying from each other <===> YES, copying is allowed, OH WHAT FUN <===> everything which was forbidden in the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> is allowed here, hey that makes engaging them and they have fun as well 🙂
As THEIR coach YOU take care of an individual learning, YOU assist the persons in their learning, DON’T FORGET about the learning rhythm, one size doesn’t fit all! Some persons need more time…
YOU may use a beamer (or a digital whiteboard, depending on YOUR budget…) to introduce first about WHAT the learners will attend to learn where YOU show ALSO the <===> Learning Path <===> which YOU have prepared for them, so they will know up from the beginning where the destination goes with ALL the different “stations“, they will feel comfortable as they can visualize it, they will know as well WHAT skills they will acquire, less unknown stuff to think about…
An example below:
.
The learners will learn about any station in the “Learning Path” AND ALSO know about WHAT skills they will acquire! Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.

Facts to consider and advice:
Adults and especially seniors are NOT anymore used toLEARNing! By knowing this YOU need to take care about it: YOU SHOULD explain that to YOUR LEARNers and tell THEM that they shouldn’t fear, that they should tell YOU when being in trouble, YOU should tell them that YOU take ALL the necessary time so that THEY will understand it, YOU should encourage them at any moment so that they will find the pleasure to LEARN 😉 YOU SHOULD use Empathy, observing them and find out WHO are those who are shy; the ones WHO won’t tell you when there is a problem. YOU SHOULD interact with them, looking over their shoulders and finding out WHERE the problem is.
That is the hardest part BUT the MOST IMPORTANT one as when they understood that they could find confidence in YOU, then they will advance in their LEARNing, THEY NEED confidence in YOU and in THEMSELVES!
Thus meaning: make the LEARNing individual! Take care of each person till they have understood it. It is like <===> differentiated instruction <===> EDUcation, BUT more coaching than teaching. In one phrase, differentiated instruction is primarily suiting instructional means to meet individual learning needs.
As mentioned already, make sure that the room isn’t sterile, NOT white! Consider the psychology of colors as it works, my 9 years experience with adults and seniors (NOT teaching) coaching. I used a pastel yellow color in the “Learning Room“, why!?
Yellow adds optimism to your home, prompting feelings of happiness in all who enter. Yellow activates memory, stimulates the nervous system, promotes communication and sparks creativity. And THAT is WHAT WE want in learning, isn’t it 😉
Make ALSO sure that there is an extra room available, where the adults, seniors can jump in to drink a beverage and eventually have some chatting with other participants, make them feel relax…
.
SO… WHAT To Teach THEM And How!?
Click the above image, please, to enlarge it.
As mentioned already, adults and seniors learn differently and slower (consider the time fact); they want stuff which they can use in their private life! SO… WHAT could be those interests!? Did I say interests, YES, it is exactly this WHERE YOU need to focus when giving courses to adults and seniors! Before starting a course I do every time an introduction session where myself and others present themselves, after the introduction I ask everybody to come in front to me and writing with capital letters on a Flipchart their interests, they could use ALSO 4 different colors (red, green, blue, black).
WHY this!? First of all, there is a bit action as they have ALL to move from their places which is different from <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> and the color they chose is ALSO a sign of their character and mood… By the way: I ask them later also WHY they were choosing that color, just to open a discussion and to make them curios about next steps; they will be aware ALSO that I observe what is going around me and that I give THEM attention…
WE will have a look all together NOW on the Flipchart and to find out the common interests, thus meaning: there will be a lot of people probably (mostly) who have THE same interests (hobbies) and NOW everybody knows WHO has the same hobby. WE created already an interest community without knowing it as these people will later talk together and probably will make an exchange of experiences 😉 It is up from there WE will build up OUR course(s)!
YOU certainly will encounter these hobbies: cooking, traveling, festivals, photos, gardening, cinema, reading, swimming, different sports, wandering, cards playing, taking videos, music, motorcycles, cars and more… That are the most common ones by my experience over 9 years.
Some examples of blogs and curation about gardening (flowers), cooking, festivals:
NOW WE know much more about OUR course participants and WE have a starting base: as anybody mostly is proud about WHAT they are doing and easily willing to talk about it (mostly…) WE will show THEM on How-To they can do it through using ICT by explaining THEM that more people would see THEIR exploits and knowledge by using curation, blogging and Social Media. WE will explain them ALSO how it will work by examples, so that THEY can see it visually. And WHY NOT, for the creative ones, how to use “ThingLink“. By experience, women are MORE creative than men, just saying…

SO… How Can I Say That This (The PracTICE) Is Working!?
Well, I was a pioneer in my country Luxembourg (Europe) already in 2002 where I gave pedagogical courses about ICTto a wide range of the population as up from 12 years old (even younger when together with a parent) to 79 years oldwith different nationalities. ALSO there were two days in the week reserved (booked by planing inside the school) for the primary schoolwhere they could use OUR “ICT LEARNing room” by my coaching to learn the (at that time) NEW technologies. Schools didn’t have YET computers in the classes at that time and I was working very close together with the teachers and helped also to convince the responsible people from the commune about thenecessity of computers in the classrooms, which worked 😉
SO… WHAT was that “ICT LEARNing Room“, called “Internetstuff“!? And WHY was my “Internetstuff” DIFFERENT from ALL the others in Luxembourg!?
A bit History and Story Telling: What is a “Internetstuff”? It was a project by the “European Commission” to bring the “ICT” to ALL the inhabitants in any commune in the European countries. They called it at that time “eEurope” and in Luxembourg it was a special task force, called “eLuxembourg” that was charged about it. SO, they decided to create special places where the population could learn through courses about “ICT”, which they called “Internetstuffen”.
The Government in Luxembourg was looking at the time to find competent people to give those courses about ICT and they were advertising in the newspapers, where I made my application. I was selected and had to follow a 4 months long education through special tailored courses about the How-To to give pedagogical courses with ICT, a bit hard at that time as I was 45 years old already, BUT I did it and I found my vocation!
I offered my services and skills to different communes and it was in ETTELBRUCK (North of the country and 30 km away from where I am living) that I found a new job and a new adventure as a pioneer. Apart from giving courses about and with ICT, NO ONE of the responsible persons had a clue about the How-To, so they told me “Do what You want, You should know what…“, OK, I was perplex and ALONE to do this job!
First I elaborated the opening hours, than I created a “brochure” which was sent to all the houses in that small city (8k inhabitants) to inform them about this new service offered by the commune. I created also a “member card” of a value of 25€ for a whole year who gave the participants the right to visit the place to use only the internet (very few had Internet in 2002) and/or to take part of courses. The place was open on a 5/8, 5 days from Monday to Saturday from 8h30 am to 11h30 am and from 13h30 to 17h30. Monday and Wednesday mornings were reserved for Primary School classes from 08h am to 11h30 am. Saturday and Sunday was closed.
There were also evening courses organized and I collected about 1k6 (1,600) hours of overtime work during 1 1/2 year (non payed hours)! I couldn’t do that job anymore alone, BUT I din’t get a co-worker allowed neither. NO budget for it! I decided NOT anymore giving evening courses and giving the courses on a different way:people (learners) could visit the place whenever they wanted during the opening hours (only in the day) and I would give them courses individually and on different disciplines (security, Office, Photo Editing, website building, email, Skype…).
The learners had more autonomy, I let them work by PracTICE after first having them explained about the How-To shown with a beamer and then also on their own PC (there were 10 PCs in the Learning Room). They could come WHEN they wanted and for how long they wanted. They were completely FREE, no MUST, NO STRESS… I explained them, showed them, observed them (studied their behavior…) and interacted only when needed, when I felt that they must get a bit help to continue. I encouraged them to try by error till they would have learned it and when learned I showed them some tricks by giving advice on How-To do BETTER. It was ME who adjusted and adapted to them, a win-win situation. They learned slowly but surely and once the basics understood (the most important) they learned the other stuff to learn much more quick as they felt more confident about ICT. I encouraged them to practice at home which they all did. I asked them where they still have problems when practicing at home and WE repeated it on another way when possible, otherwise same procedure…
I was also constantly updating my “Professional Development” by reading lots of books (insatiable…):
This, below, is NOT bragging BUT my pride about the feedback (which is a MUST) from my “LEARNers” who visited my courses.

In 2015 Coaching-Mentoring Is Seen As An Education Difference-Maker
[START Text from On Educational Coaching, Mentoring & High-Impact Learning] Coaching is a difference-maker in education. Think of the mindset evident in high-performing athletic teams, chess teams, even actors and other entertainers. Content providers are valuable, but that is not what makes learning organizations distinct, especially not those that seek to reach and provide a high-quality education to a full spectrum of learners. The same thing is true as we continue to implement things like competency-based education models. Many celebrate the way CBE can reduce the cost of college degrees, increasing access and opportunity, and addressing critical workforce needs. However, if cost reduction happens at the expense of great coaching and mentoring, I am concerned that we will make little progress in the democratization of education. The “haves and have nots” of education depend largely upon the prerequisite skills needed to take advantage of newer and emerging learning environments ranging from CBE to MOOCs, self-directed learning to self-organized learning environments. As already mentioned above, I asked a lot about WHERE some could have problems to understand and encouraged the learners to tell me, even I asked them to write down on the Flipchart questions they would have eventually. WE collected them all and when they were fit enough on the keyboard I let them create themselves (with my little help) a FAQ’s list (Frequently Asked Questions) and a glossary, see example below please.

Is My Proposed Way Of Coaching With ICT ONLY For Adult Learning!?
There is a lot of common from the above mentioned with youth coaching and could be applied as well for them! WHEN YOU make youth feeling being accepted as adults, they will give YOU more respect and it will be a GOOD atmosphere for BETTER learning also! I had teens visiting my “Learning Room [Internetstuff]” for the ONLY purpose to listen and to observe when I gave courses with coaching to the participants. They came in their FREE time when there wasn’t school and made their homework while observing also my “style of teaching, as they said”. I got told by some of them that they learned MORE in 2 hours about ICT than they learned in a month in school. And THAT is THE difference between theory and <===> PracTICE! <===>.

Cyber-Security And Privacy Knowledge As Skills In The 21st Century Are NOT Yet Enough Taught And Present, WHY!?
.
Did YOU realize already that WE are living in the 21st Century and that WE nearly ALL are using the so called NEW TECHNOLOGIES, the internet, the smartphone(s), laptops, computers, tablets, household goods who are connected to the internet, and this on a daily base!? Did YOU ever started THINKING about such consequences concerning YOUR Privacy and vulnerability to Cyber-Security!? As far as I know, from practice while talking to people, most people are NOT as nobody has given them advice, NOR were they taught about it in schools, and there is the problem!
In the digital age, as WE are living NOW in it, WE MUST learn on a daily base to adapt to its very quick change! Education can’t follow with that as it is and was almost years behind… It needs to have a ===> RETHINK <=== to catch up!
SO… By knowing this and accepting it ALSO (the most difficult, BUT…) WE would be good advised for learning on a daily base to get the MOST out of necessary knowledge and skills to give OUR kids the BEST Education possible, an ===> Up-To-Date <=== knowledge, a knowledge who isn’t ONLY a cherry-picked knowledge, BUT a knowledge who includes ALSO Privacy and Cyber-Security as also skills!
The future is also that any device, even in the household, will be connected to the internet. It is called “The Internet Of Things” and as with any NEW technical stuff, it brings risks and vulnerabilities…
MOST of people don’t realize the importance of privacy, especially for Cyber-Security and Identity Theft, check the video below who explains very good, please.
.
.
After watching the video YOU certainly are surprised and hopefully also willing to learn a bit more, it is actually NOT that difficult as most people think.
Who’s To Blame For Cyber-Security problems!?
Surveys from professional companies are NOW ALSO showing that Cyber-Security is OUR ALL responsibility, check below, please…
The Dangers And Vulnerabilities Of The Internet Of Things
.
Same procedure again, read my curation about it to find out, it is THE easiest way to get aware of the existing dangers and to get convinced about that LEARNing about Cyber-Security is a MUST…
[Start text from Kaspersky] The word “wearable” was once merely an adjective describing an article of clothing that was easy to wear. Now “wearable” refers to a mobile device that users wear on their body, and this latter wearable was a major topic of discussion last week. New mobile and wearable devices offer users a robust set of innovative features and utilities but they often face the same traditional threats as old fashioned computers.
“In coming months, we’ll see wearable devices becoming the next attack targets, highlighting the need to pay special attention to these devices, their capabilities, and the information they handle.” [End text from Kaspersky]

Gust MEES and I have followed each other for some time now. I’m not sure how we “met” but I’ll let him recall it shortly. He’s an intriguing individual – lives in Luxembourg (Europe) http://www.scoop.it/t/luxembourg-europe, a country with ONLY 502,000 inhabitants and is a regular on Twitter. You can find him very active there as @knolinfos.

Doug PETERSON is ALSO featured At EdTech:we strive to create the most valuable resources forhigher education technology professionals. One of the ways we do that is by highlighting the smartest and most innovative education tech bloggers on the web.
I will ONLY publish in this blog the part which seems to me the most important for my readers, the WHY of the MUST of Cyber-Security Teaching in Education, so let’s go:
.
Doug: So much of your focus appears to be on Education and Security. You have a huge curation of materials. Why the interest in these topics?
Gust: You are right, I have a lot of interests (I am curious for Learning more). Well, I should divide it also in the two topics, let’s start with IT-Security, the beginning. I am online since 1998 and I read also a lot, books and magazines. I got my first knowledge of IT-Security in 1999 by reading PC-Magazines and I applied it also on my PC and of course, as I am not selfish and having the will to share it with others, I published it also on my website(s).
A certain moment come, my websites had a big success. In private life people told me that I am crazy to talk about security, virus and more of those strange beasts problems at that time. So now my website has more than 2 million visits, see pic below, please.
I started so to learn more about and also to share my knowledge with others and even that my Security courses got accepted by the Ministry of Education in Luxembourg (Europe), my country. Check here, please (in French):
Once started, one must continue when there is a demand for it Looks like people love my way of explaining and teaching. I became also a member (Advisory Board) of:
Sharing my acquired knowledge with others is priority and a pleasure also!
A pleasure!? Am I kidding? NO, it’s something who makes me happy, check here:
When I do something for other people, I feel good, “says Peterson“. When you do something voluntarily for others, not only for its own interests, it is rewarded. In some mysterious way, serve as an “altruistic” (the opposite of selfishness) gives his own life more important. It seems that nature have put it in our genes, or that people are happy when they have the spirit of sharing, community spirit.
So, dear readers, make yourself feeling good and share
Concerning now Education, that’s a bit a different story. I was a manager with Electronics background and worked for different companies when later I got unemployed with 45 years old (2000). I was looking for a new job and I saw that the Government was looking for ICT instructors, proposing to give people pedagogical courses to be able to do this job. I applied and I passed the tests, later I was studying for 4 months pedagogy, tailored for ICT. Very hard to study pedagogy at that age, but I got IT. One is never too old to learn new stuff, when the will is there.
I became months later an ICT course instructor on an eight (8) hour base work and on 5 days per week work, very hard… I gave courses to adults, seniors (even 70+…), primary classrooms and primary school teachers… I was getting nearly obsessed by learning, I found my destination, I found my vocation, I love it to teach…
My knowledge (professional development) was updated by following different other courses and by reading a lot of books, where here below my selection:
Doug: Do you find educators more or less concerned about security than the average online citizen?
Gust: YES, I do, sorry! Educators are less motivated to learn about the basics of Cyber-Security, IT-Security and have ALSO less knowledge about it, my point of view resulting bypractice. Meaning that Educators I know (friends) and also by analyzing the stream of tweets on Twitter shows me that!
Doug: Why do you think this is that way?
Gust: That’s a real million dollar, euro question Well, as most of Educators are using NOT a PC but most a Mac and some a computer with Linux OS, they feel too secure! But thinking that these OS (Operating Systems) are secure, that’s NOT the reality, sorry. NOBODY is perfect, NO OS is perfect, reality shows us that when one is analyzing the attacks and vulnerabilities worldwide!
.
Doug: Do you find that Macintosh or Linux users have this over confidence that their platform is immune to problems?
Gust: YES, I do! You are right with the word “Over Confidence” as it is exactly that! I don’t make a war of different OS, but one must be aware today that Nobody Is Perfect, attacks and vulnerabilities are showing us that, see here please:
Gust: Seriously and convinced, I think that there is a MUST to teach the basics of Cyber-Security by Education in any schools around in the world, and this up from early age! The kids will understand it very quickly, they are more intelligent as most adults think as their computers and smartphones are the (nearly) most important to them! I have worked together with teens (11 years old and +) and showed them How To protect their computers and how to stay informed about new threats, that was a piece of cake for them, I even didn’t think that it could be that easy, I was surprised! Convincing adults is (???) more (very) hard!
So, how could that be in practice? That was the question I asked myself (oh yes, I thought a lot…) and here are my propositions and advice:
Apart from teaching the basics of Cyber-Security in schools by traditional learning, one should try ALSO to involve and engage youth in that process of learning, learning by doing and learning to have responsibility! IT’s ALL about responsibility anyway when working and using ICT (BYOD included)! This could be realized with a piece of theater (it took me a year of development) where they could be involved as actors (players) and also by giving them the feeling of being an IT-Hero by becoming Security-Scouts. Sounds strange? Check the links below to learn more:
They are for domestic security, the basic knowledge which anybody should have in the 21st Century… Created with the less possible technical expressions…
Actually I am preparing blogs where I want to share my 10 years lived practice on How To I used the knowledge where most are only starting now to learn it and/or using it. Coming soon and hoping that it will help others and giving them some new ideas (perhaps) also… It’s all about sharing experience and knowledge…
