marcteusch_2013-390x390As on October 26th 2016 I had an interview with Marc TEUSCH in the Makerspace maach3” in LTEttelbruck. This is the third interview from EDUcation in Luxembourg of a series which I intend to do; the first one was about <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System, followed by Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 5) Creativity and Maker-Spaces | BEECREATIVE. For me personally it was ALSO a pleasure to visit the place as it was my old school, lots of memories and lots of positive changes in the last 40 years since I left the place… I hereby thank a lot Mr. Marc TEUSCH for having accepted my request for having an interview with him. My first request was made over Social Media Twitter (on DM; Private Message) as WE are following each other.

First WE were talking about on the HOW the “Makerspaces” were created in Luxembourg and from WHERE they come (the ideas…); as Marc told me that it isn’t a NEW idea, it actually started in the “Hackerspaces“, where Marc was ALSO involved in SYN2CAT/LEVEL2 Hackerspace Luxembourg, where I made an interview recently, Digital Luxembourg Interviews-Hackerspaces-SYN2CAT-LEVEL2, as one of its creators and founders. Marc had the idea to create a “Makerspace” in 2012 on its working place at “LTEttelbruck“, first experiments were created… And it was on March 6th 2013 that Marc was speaking about “Makerspaces” on a TEDxLuxembourg event, check video below please:

The idea and concept of the current BEE Creative project (http://www.bee-creative.lu), which is part of the ministry’s Digital(4)Education (http://www.digital4education.lu) effort, was conceived and developed by Marc and as such, he’s the national coordinator of Makerspaces in Luxembourg (http://www.makerspace.lu).

[Gust MEES] Remark the “Flat Hierarchy“, I love it! THIS is exactly WHAT is necessary for “Creativity” <===> Let it GO, let it flow… <===> and with THIS concept I am sure by 100% that it will be a success!!! I wish I would be 45 years younger to participate in it 😉

THIS “Concept” as used in Luxembourg is unique in Europe!! It’s ONLY in its beginning phase, BUT [Marc TEUSCH] told me WHAT is foreseen on a “Long-Term view”: 

  • Getting Makerspaces in ALL schools in Luxembourg
  • Possibility to bring in Makerspaces into the curriculum, ideas and preparation on its way…
  • Makerspaces could (and should be…) a trampoline between the schools (THEORY) and the workingforce/Industry (PracTICE) to close the gap…
    • [Gust MEES] I completely agree with THAT!! I remember when I had my first job in the industry and I faced THE DIFFERENCE between the learned AND <===> SchoolCocoon Mentality <===> and WHAT really happens in the PracTICE!! OMG, I suffered :(((

It was in December 2013 that Marc TEUSCH was contacted by “SCRIPT” from “Luxembourg EDUcation” where he presented his ideas and vision about “Makerspaces” in Luxembourg, which was heartily welcomed as the country was looking for a NEW strategy in EDUcation to prepare it to the freshly launched campaign about “Digital Luxembourg” AND “Digital4EDUcation“.

Makerspaces are a GREAT way to close the gap between schools (THEORY) and the workingforce/Industry as the learners can GET the “PracTICE-Feeling” through tinkering around in the “Makerspaces” and the “Coaches” will see ALSO WHO has capabilities to GET guided to a “PracTICE-LEARNing“… This is called “Orientation Professionnelle” in the “Luxembourg EDUSystem“…

Actually there are already +/- 20 Makerspaces ready to launch by Februray 2017 and more in preparation…

My Personal View AND PracTICE

Framing in EDUcation[Gust MEES] MY experience described in ONLY some phrases: Give the LEARNers, students (whatever age) the freedom of LEARNing without squeezing THEM into a FRAME and concentrate on guiding them as a coach by analyzing THEIR behavior and show them the How-To to become self-directed learners, autodidacts. SHOW THEM ALSO up from the beginning WHAT THE <===> LEARNing Path <===> will be with design of it and explain THEM that they could design themselves it with a short introduction on the How-To. THEY will learn the ICT-PracTICE which will help them once out of the <===> #SchoolCocoon <===> to be ready for Life-Long LEARNing and to be able to adapt very quickly in the workforce! WHEN YOU show the LEARNers, students <===> WHAT the profit is for THEIR private life <===> YOU will engage them very quickly 😉 AND DON’T teach THEM more as necessary, propose them some links to go further ONLY for those who want!!

WHAT’S my message and WHY did I create this blog post!?

Well, I will encourage all youth and also adults, seniors, oldies to become <===>Life-Long LEARNers <===> and staying Up-To-Date with their knowledge, especially concerning their skills in ICT, called NOW <===> #eSkills <===>! In the modern world YOU will change YOUR job probably +/- 12 times in YOUR working career, it is very rare to stay life-long in the same job and/or same company!!! SO… The workforce is looking for people with ICT skills which YOU mostly didn’t learn at school, right!? 

Bring in YOUR kids to such creative makerplaces WHERE THEY can develop (and perhaps parents as well…) THEIR creativity and GET interested in something WHICH could boost THEIR interest into ICT in their future 😉

YOU won’t have (mostly) the time to learn by visiting courses, right!? START to become Life-Long LEARNers by LEARNing on YOUR OWN pace, by becoming <===> Autodidacts <===> Self-Directed LEARNers. YOU are able to, I did it, so can YOU!? 😉

I found a job because of my ICT eSkills and I am STILL LEARNing on a daily base routine for being Up-To Date with my <===> Professional Development <===>, even being retired NOW! THE pleasure of LEARNing!

I did THE <===> ICT PracTICE <===> and THAT’S WHAT the workforce needs!!!


 Due to my eSkills I could share my knowledge AND expertise ALSO with the below mentioned as well as to a broad range of visitors from around the globe!

My Memories and Nostalgia

Framing in EDUcation

The <===> Makerspace Movement <===> ISN’T something NEW actually as it happend already +/- 45-50 years ago with an other name! At that time it was called <===> Do It Yourself (#DIY) <===> and was seen as pure HOBBY and NOT endorsed by EDUcation! SO, it took minimum 45 years before EDUcation realized its importance! 

WHY do I say this? Well, I was one of those pioneers at that time in my youth; I used already electronics (transistors, integrated circuits, LED displays and also analog displays…) in my learning in PracTICE projects as it wasn’t foreseen yet… I won ALSO an electronics contest in 1979 from Germanic countries, which later helped me to find a BETTER job!

He’s a founder of several non-profit organisations amongst which the syn2cat hackerspace (http://www.syn2cat.lu) and the Graffiti Research Lab Luxembourg (http://www.grl.lu). The idea and concept of the current BEE Creative project (http://www.bee-creative.lu), which is part of the ministry’s Digital(4)Education (http://www.digital4education.lu) effort, was conceived and developed by Marc and as such, he’s the national coordinator of makerspaces in Luxembourg (http://www.makerspace.lu). Marc has also been a teacher of computer science since 1998 and is currently attached to the school board where he initiated many innovative school-wide projects such as the CDays (http://www.ltett.lu/?page_id=3602).

Nadine SCHIRTZ and Yvonne ZOTZAs on July 25th 2016 I had an interview with Nadine SCHIRTZ and Yvonne ZOTZ in the The flagship makerspace of the national Youth Service SNJ “BASE 1” at Forum Geesseknäppchen in Luxembourg-City. This is the second interview of a series which I intend to do; the first one was about <===> Luxembourg EDUcation-Interviews | 1) The Luxembourg EDU-System.

I hereby thank a lot Mrs. Nadine SCHIRTZ for having accepted my request for having an interview with her. My first request was made over Social Media Facebook (on PM; Private Message) as WE are friends on Facebook (Social Media) and I am ALSO member of the “Advisory Board” from BEESECURE where Nadine is ALSO involved. Nadine replied to my request with giving me her work eMail Address. I sent her an official request by eMail and it was getting accepted; as YOU see Social Media has a lot of advantages 😉

I thank ALSO a lot Yvonne ZOTZ, the responsible person for the “BASE 1 at Forum Geesseknäppchen” (left-hand on the above photo).

It was a pleasure to talk together for 1h:30 to two lovely ladies with a LOT of competency and professional behavior! I enjoyed very much that conversation as especially WE were talking about the “Pedagogy” and “Social” behind and that it ISN’T pure “Technology”, THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!

Nadine is officially working for http://www.snj.public.lu/fr. Makerspaces in Luxembourg are set up via the BEE CREATIVE project by SCRIPT and SNJ in both formal education (schools) and non-formal education(child daycare structures, youth houses,…) settings.

Yvonne is THE “Space-Keeper“, the responsible person for the MakerspaceBASE 1” and she is ALSO running under contract of http://www.snj.public.lu/fr. Let us mention ALSO that the “Makerspaces” in Luxembourg are embodied by the “SCRIPT” from Luxembourg EDUcation System, where M. Serge LINCKELS coordinates them; I interviewed M. As mentioned already above, each Makerspace has its “Space-Keeper”, the responsible person of that place. These “Space-Keeper’s” connect together WITH THEIR TEAMS throughNetworking“, Thus meaning: they have meetings over the internet through the “Cloud”<===> [NS] WHERE they meet regularly and in person in different makerspaces and at events to exchange views and projects. Of course, networking via IT-tools is another important aspect. They make an exchange of  “GOOD PracTICEs”, NEW ideas, NEW projects…

WHAT is the STRATEGY and Pedagogy behind AND the Social!?

Information LiteracyWell, that is VERY interesting as I found out by discussing in the interview with the two young ladies, who by the way were VERY professional and with a LOT of COMPETENCY: looks like Luxembourg will have a bright future on ICT in the next coming years!!

I was VERY OPEN-MINDED and listening to Yvonne as she explained me very well WHAT is behind such “Makerspace” places; well I knew it already WHAT it is, BUT HOW it is done in Luxembourg I didn’t know really NOR do OTHERS (my readers…) probably!! Nadine as well gave me ALSO some GOOD points and both girls (Ladies) explained me very well WHAT is the point behind!!

Well, Luxembourg is following NEW trends in EDUcation as well, as ICT is becoming THE MAJOR slogan for the country <===> #DigitalLëtzebuerg #DigitalLuxembourg #Digital4EDUcation <===> AND THAT Luxembourg has to do something OUT of the NORMAL to shine!! I agree with THAT by 100%!! Luxembourg doesn’t have enough qualified people in the ICT-sector and has to work for to get them soon! Through the “makerspaces” kids might get influenced as well to be interested in their future to study in ICT!

[NS] With BEE CREATIVE, Luxembourg has become the first country to develop e-skills and e-creativity by implementing makerspaces in both formal and non-formal education systems. This is a milestone in the thrive towards an enlightened and motivated generation of “cyber citizens” in the political frame of “Digital Luxembourg”.

Well, Makerspaces are THE first place to GET kids interested in something special, a place WHERE creativity could GET fostered, WHERE TEAMS get build WITH SAME interests without knowing on the beginning that such things could even happen!! Youth is invited by groups of minimum of six (6), MOSTLY from EDUcation, BUT if clever NOT necessarily to use the ONLY EDUcation!!! Contact the girls to find out 😉

The Forum Geesseknäppchen” in Luxembourg-City has really ALL WHAT is needed to GET youth the possibilities to develop a creative mind as well that THEY are guided with GOOD trained coaches (teachers, educators…), supervised by “SCRIPT“; let us have a look:

  • Jeunes scientifiques (Jonk Fuerscher)
  • Mérite Jeunesse
  • Projet SQUAT 
    • As I got told the “Projet SQUAT” is: there is a special room in the “Forum Geesseknäppchen” who could get hired; this room is equipped with ALL the necessary stuff for holding meetings and to use the ICT stuff in it. It’s a place WHERE young entrepreneurs could come in and GET coached to realize THEIR projects, it’s about <===> Project Based LEARNing (PBL) <===>… My personal meaning. Luxembourg has NOW its “1€ Company Law” accepted, thus meaning: to boost “Entrepreneurship” companies could get created by ONLY investing 1€ for its creation, a simplified way of an “a.s.b.l.“; I guess that this concept together with “Projet SQUAT” will have a BIG success as soon as it will GET more known by young (and old, why not…) entrepreneurs! As on 16-January-2017 this would be possible!!

WHAT will happen NEXT!???

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-aigainformation1Well, there are some challenges in the air 😉 I got told THAT there is a <===> MakerFest <===> on 19-20 December 2016  in the “Forum Geesseknäppchen” in Luxembourg-City WHERE the organisators are looking to make it a VERY BIG EVENT while using as MUCH possible place as possible inside the building to give YOUTH its way to develop!! AND of course a LOT of prizes from http://www.snj.public.lu/fr and from possible sponsors…

A fashion défilé (catwalk) will be organized and the kids will wear their clothes with wearables (which they created themselves…), kids will play THEIR OWN composed and/or sampled music for the background music and much more…

Update (07-04-2017): Up from September 2017 there will be “BEE CREATIVE for kids” introduced! Makerspaces will get held ALSO THEN in the “Maisons Relais” and in the Primary School.

Update (04-07-2017): A <===> Makerfest <===> was organized at Lycée Technique ESCH/ALZETTE on 04-07-2017. Over 1.000 persons were present on the second Makerfest at LTESCH (Luxembourg) on 04-07-2017, organized by BEECREATIVE, Service National de la Jeunesse, SCRIPT. Lots of different schools from around the country were present with their students (learners) from any age!
It was a pleasure to see with HOW MANY fun the kids and teens were “making” and LEARNing 😉

  • [GM] WHEN (date) were Makerspaces in Luxembourg opened ?
    • [NS] „The flagship makerspace of the national Youth Service SNJ“ was “Base1” which opened in November 2015. All of the six actually open Makerspaces were launched on the same day by Minister Claude Meisch in November 2015. After the launch event, the different makerspaces adopted their own rhythm. Some needed more time to fill up their space with workshops, others were ready to start right away. As for the SNJ makerspace “Base1”, it is active and open on a daily basis since January 2016.
  • [GM] How many Makerspaces do actually exist in Luxembourg ? (I know there are six & more will open soon?)
    • [NS] Actually six makerspaces are up and running in Luxembourg. 5 of them are set in high schools. As BEE CREATIVE grows, the interest in Makerspaces becomes bigger and bigger. Right now, SCRIPT has a full list of secondary schools and even a couple of primary schools who want to open their own makerspace in the coming schoolyear. As for SNJ, we are focusing on the non-formal education settings. Meaning that we are going to fully support at least 3 Maisons Relais across Luxembourg to open a makerspace in their premises. The maker movement and interest in IT creativity really is a milestone in Luxembourgish education.
  • [GM] Do You have actually some statistics on how many people (also by age…) have visited the Makerspaces ? Maybe ALSO graphs about it ?
    • [NS] I don’t know for the school makerspaces, but at “Base1”, we counted 1200 visits in the first six months. Tendency: growing… 😉
  • [GM] Is it possible for anyone to visit the “Makerspaces” OR are they ONLY available from persons of EDU (Educators, teachers, students, learners)?
    • [NS] Logistics sometimes make it difficult for school makerspaces to open their doors to non-students. They do their best however to welcome a large audience during events etc. It is free for every makerspace to choose how the access to their space should be handled. At Base1, young people are welcome to work on their projects. We don’t really care whether they come on their own during “Open space” times or with a group from school, a youth house, a Maison Relais. If you’re not sure whether you can come to Base1, just call and ask…
  • [GM] Are the Makerspaces ALSO OPEN during the school holidays ?
    • [NS] Right now, the only Makerspace open during school holidays is the Base1. (The one where we are for the interview). However this might change in the future. As I already said, each makerspace can choose when to open or close their doors and the need to keep them open during holidays might increase in the future.
  • [GM] I have recently read that « Girls in Tech » were ALSO in one Makerspace, are there more such events planned ? Next Girls in Tech Event to Explore Creative Programming and a Maker Space (31-05-2016) as I find this very important to boost it, especially in programming (coding). Girls are very GOOD in this 😉 Check history of programming (ADA, #WWII, encrypting, Apollo code for moon landing…)

Framing in EDUcation

The <===> Makerspace Movement <===> ISN’T something NEW actually as it happend already +/- 45-50 years ago with an other name! At that time it was called <===> Do It Yourself (#DIY) <===> and was seen as pure HOBBY and NOT endorsed by EDUcation! SO, it took minimum 45 years before EDUcation realized its importance! 

WHY do I say this? Well, I was one of those pioneers at that time in my youth; I used already electronics (transistors, integrated circuits, LED displays and also analog displays…) in my learning in PracTICE projects as it wasn’t foreseen yet… I won ALSO an electronics contest in 1979 from Germanic countries, which later helped me to find a BETTER job!

programmerman2Creativity: Often I get asked from people if “Creativity” can get learned and even some say that it can’t get learned (BTW: that are the people who don’t have creativity). Well, my teaching experience shows me that it can get learned, slowly but surely. Even lazy people are creative to find and invent special ways to NOT getting OUT of THEIR comfort zone 😉 BUT it needs a person who is creative and knows WHAT creativity is to teach it to OTHERS.

Below my curation about ThingLink where YOU can first read about it for a better understanding:

First of all, please let me tell YOU this: to engage YOUR learners show THEM some practical examples and let THEM play around with them. THEY will have understood then what it is about and THEN YOU ask them to create THEMSELVES a new interactive image with ThingLink, a private one. Concerning the preparation for a vacation: after YOU decided WHERE to spend YOUR vacation make some research on the internet about WHAT is interesting to visit and bookmark the links which YOU have found. BEST way is to start from the place where YOU are in the hotel (camping, Youth hostel, B&B…) and then looking around… Once YOU know WHAT YOU want to visit around, go to “Google Maps“, make a screenshot of the complete area and create a new image by uploading it to “ThingLink“. Bring in the “spots” with links from YOUR bookmarks into that map (as shown in my example). YOU dispose now of an interactive map with the places YOU want to visit and this is a BIG help to stay relax during YOUR vacation.

TIP: what I do is printing out a day-trip on “Google Maps” and organizing it in a file-folder which my wife and I have in the car, so the vacation is organized then and WE don’t have any stress 😉 That is ALSO ===> ProactiveTHINKing <=== in case that there isn’t any Wi-Fi available!

As YOU are ALSO certainly taking photos from YOUR vacation, so YOU can integrate them later ALSO in the interactive map and YOU will dispose so of a complete documentation of YOUR vacation in ONLY one interactive image!

This is the second blog about “Blogging” and in the first one ===> PracTICE: Using Blogs for Critical Thinking and Proactive Thinking <=== WE were talking about WHAT would be the BEST way to introduce the students (learners) to blogging. NOW, lets go for a practical example where the teachers (educators) tell the students (learners) to create a blog on a specific topic. It should be a topic WHERE there will be a lot of engagement from the students and from WHAT they would get a maximum out of ICT SKILLS, creativity, use of the technology (camera, smartphone, photo camera…), Social Media knowledge, communication, Social Learning, preparation knowledge, privacy knowledge (not publishing blog…), working in a team, collaboration

.

SO… WHAT could that be for a topic? Well, I think that something everybody could do is to write a blog about WHAT any single person makes probably different, ===> WHAT are WE eating at home? <===

sharing-iconOf course, if someone of YOUR students (learners) OR parents don’t WANT and allow to use that topic, leave it FREE to them to chose another topic! Make sure ALSO that the parents sign a paper that they agree with such an action as it goes into PRIVACY!

Other possibilities could be: pet, sport activities, reading (my books…), games (games which I play…), my hobbies (some have more than one hobby…), my friends hobbies… Talk to YOUR responsible psychological person in YOUR school, in case if YOU have kids with problems to find out WHAT could be the BEST way to get THEM also ===> engaged in that learning process <===

Have a look below, please, how this could look. I prepared myself a blog about what’s served on a table in Luxembourg (Europe), to give YOU an idea:

Depending in which country and/or state YOU are living, this could cause problems as well because of social status and privacy and certain parents wouldn’t allow such actions (NO one needs to know what’s happening in our family…)… Feel FREE to prepare a form which YOU handle out to the parents to hear THEIR opinion about it and tell THEM that THEIR kids (students, learners) are NOT forced to apply to it and could use another topic as already mentioned above… YOU will NEVER get a 100% agreement, BUT YOU could make the project a worth way to create together a project THAT shows the different ways HOW people THINK and HOW to show THAT it is STILL possible to create a COMMON project WHERE people are working together!

YOU will face the problems of REALITY from the REAL-WORLD by using the possibilities of the VIRTUAL-WORLD and YOU will be able to discuss these problems as well with YOUR students (learners) ===> Critical-Thinking and Proactive-Thinking… <=== Do YOU have this courage!???

Explain THEM also WHY it would be a good idea to agree to that project because of:

  • Students would work together to exchange about life, about the REAL-WORLD…
  • Students will learn from each other about different ways of life…
  • Students will learn how to use their smartphones and how to blog, learning about Social Media, blogging, getting 21st Century skills, how to combine smartphones, tablets, using THEIR creativity, working in a team, how to edit and correct photos for BETTER quality
  • Students will learn how to stay private while using blogs, securing their privacy so, because the teacher (educator) WILL FIRST HAVE A LOOK ON IT AND GIVE ADVICE before publishing the final version…
  • Students will learn to accept each other whatever their social status is…
  • Students prepare first THEIR own blog and than later a selection of the photos from each student will get used on THE COMMON COMMUNITY BLOG, where the students write also THEIR experience to document it…

I recommend WordPress as it is very easy to use and as it allows the students to chose from a variety of templates, so each student could use its own template to show its creativity. Then WE need ALSO an easy to use and a multi-platform (any OS compatible) PHOTO-EDITOR, where I recommend PHOTOSCAPE for Windows users ONLY, and GIMP (Windows, Linux, Mac) see below the links:

Keep It Private Till Everything Is Checked In Depth

As already mentioned above, students blogs should get kept private, WordPress offers this (check left hand screenshot) till the teacher(s) checked them in depth to make sure that their isn’t any privacy problem such as:

                    • Students took photos of parents and sisters, brothers: do THEY agree to that the photos will get published on the internet?
                    • Photos are using the GPS tracking and show WHERE the real location is! THIS is NOT good and the tags should get removed before publishing!
                    • WHAT is Geotagging?

The GPS Tracking of photos SHOULD get disabled first of all in any device, smartphones, iPad, iPhone! SHOW the students (learners) how to do this while following the tips of the below links:

MAUSI, the smart computer mouse. Gust MEES’s creation, realized by Chantal MAQUET

Very long time ago already, in 2002 I created MAUSI, the mascotte of my working place. I did it for the pleasure of the kids who visited my courses together with their teacher(s). The idea came as I explained a whole primary class (3d year, 9 years old) what a computer is and what one could do with a PC. It was the beginning of the computer era and at that time most people didn’t know how to work with it. So I decided to use Windows Paint to draw, a creative action. I first explained to the kids what the computer mouse is fore and asked them what they wanted me to draw. They wanted a mouse, as I showed them the computer mouse their answer was logical…

As I have some talent for drawing and painting, so I switched on the beamer and they saw how I created MAUSI in real time, by explaining them and their teacher any taken step also on how I did it.

They were all fascinated and me happy that I was able to create it, here is the result:

Later I created an animated GIF as shown left hand side and in above website and showed it to the teachers and to the kids, they became later all addicted to the computer, I awakened the desire to learn to work with a computer, I felt happy! Primary school classes visited twice a week my working place to work with the computers and also to learn about how to work with them; at that time the school didn’t have yet computers in the classrooms, that came very more late because of budget.

The animated GIF is the original MAUSI, so as I created it and the right hand side image is the color version who was created later by Chantal MAQUET, who did the job for the Ministry of Education in Luxembourg. I created different courses about domestic IT-Security for the Ministry of Education where MAUSI (in color version) was integrated, check here, please:

By the way: the name MAUSI means “little mouse” in my language…

How Did I do it that quick with MS Paint, is there a Trick?

Mausi-interrogatifI get often asked how it was that quick created (in 40 minutes), especially when also explaining it to others!? Well, that’s practice! I was working a lot around with MS Paint to find out about How To work BEST with it and on the quickest way as possible. I do this with any program that I use, I call it “Making a good preparation” for getting BEST results later, thus meaning: one needs to invest the first time to save time later 😉

So how did I create it then so quick!? I was using the magnify tool and the rubber (a lot of times) to adjust while drawing with the mouse. YES, drawing with the mouse, it’s possible, but it requires a lot of patience and a strong will

Creativity makes it fun to learn, your learners will learn even more as you want because they will talk around with the parents and friends and try out themselves and/or with the parents…

The positive side effect with my little adventure was, that adults (the parents of the kids, plus friends and neighbors) who never wanted to use a computer at that time made an inscription to visit my courses about the usage of the basics of ICT later and are now also digital citizens 😉

Giving up something which was already well known worldwide, was NO OPTION! For ME it’s THE BEST way (Curation) to learn and to stay up-to-date with my Professional Development! I tried out a lot of different ways after being online since 1998 and believe me, please, it’s the fastes way to keep it UP! 😉 Through Curation I build up my <===> PKM <===> Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management from where I can use it in ANY of my blogs, twitter posts and other Social Media to share it to people willing to learn.

Dynamic Learning

Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With digital tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamicThis concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.

Through Curation, Social Media twitter and by building a PLN this is perfectly possible!

BTW : Did YOU actually realize that NOW it’s the PracTICE WHICH is dominating the Real-World before it EVEN is taught by EDUcation, a BIG CHANGE, isn’t it!!! Because of Entrepreneurship (bold actions…) the internet helped to CHANGE the world and flipped EDUcation to bring it MORE close to the needs of the workforce/Industry!!!

The NEW Pedagogy is MORE about the learners, students and to put THEM into the drivers seat; looking to find a Win-Win situation about THE How-To to GET THEM learning together in a team (EVEN outside the School-Cocoon with Social Media…) and to prepare THEM for the workforce/labor/industry by being able for <===> Learning-To-Learn <===> for a Life-Long Learning once out of school!

What’s the secret of success while innovating?

I hear you screaming already: I would like to be innovative, I even have some ideas BUT I am fearing about WHAT OTHERS would say and think about!! To be honest, NEVER look about WHAT OTHERS would say, innovation is something NEW and the new will GET up from the beginning NO acceptance, apart from a few which Professional-Development is Up-To-Date, and you probably (mostly) will GET even very hard criticism because people tend for “Listening to reply and NOT for understanding”!!

 

With ICT in EDUcation and while being (nearly) Up-To-Date with your Professional-Development while you have read the most important books about Modern-EDUcation from renowned researchers and by being online and using Social Media, especially Twitter, you certainly “feel” what MUST change to give OUR students, learners, BEST EDUcation. DO SO, I am pushing you if necessary, the world needs people with courage, motivation, engagement to bring Modern-EDUcation farther!!

And I am NOT talking about tools, Apps, THEY are ONLY facilitators; THE main so-called tool is YOU!!! YOU are modeling the statues (your learners, students) from a raw piece to a Master-Piece because of YOUR talents, knowledge, experience, Up-To-Date Professional-Development. It’s YOUR talent, like in arts, YOUR creativity who sparkles over to the learners, students with YOUR motivation, engagement, passion…

IF NO effort is brought in, NO results will come out!!

 

NOW, you know the secret ingredients (it’s like cooking…) and then comes the way of the How-To, there WE need to use ALSO Social Media, especially Twitter to connect with the students, learners!! Did I say connecting with students, learners on Twitter and learning together with the whole world; an OPEN place, NOT a closed classroom!!??? Sounds strange, isn’t it!??? Well, it isn’t strange at all, as it is PracTICE for the students, learners, to GET straight in to WHAT they will get used once in the workforce. It’s actually the BEST PracTICE they can get.

 

As on January 2018 I just have seen ONE Twitter-Chat (if you know another one, let me know please…) WHERE students, learners (average age 20 years old) were involved and it comes from Canada, the University of Ottawa, run by Pierre LEVY. By following that Twitter-Chat one can see and analyze THE way HOW students are thinking by bringing in THEIR Critical-Thinking, that shows their learning instantly… AND, the students use as well the <===> Twitter Moments <===> to make THEIR reflection about their learning while collecting different tweets from different persons on the Twitter-Chat <===> #UOTM18 <===> and even creating blog posts about it to reflect their learning. The moments and the blogs are made outside the <===> #SchoolCocoon (school, university…) <===> and Pierre LEVY is using this practice since 3-4 years already.

So, as I see it in we have two binary options – stay unfinished or be completely miserable. Let me explain, if we attempt to do the same things for kids in 2028 as we do today we will be woefully ineffective. Very rarely is someone who is ineffective at their job fulfilled by their job and happy in their professional life.

Okay, 2028 seems pretty far away. I challenge you to consider if it is really possible to make slight changes for eight years and then have a monumental shift in years nine and ten. Probably not. So, what’s the point?

The change in our world is constant. Our kids are different than they were ten years ago and will be vastly different ten years from now. Our communities are changing. Our world is fundamentally different and will continue to evolve. In education we must adjust to them and to our world (more importantly their world) or we are going to face becoming dangerously irrelevant.

So, as educators we have one choice. One option to stay relevant. One option to compete. One option to serve our kids with integrity. And perhaps most importantly, one option to be personally happy. That option is to stay unfinished. Embrace change. Love the grind. Have a deep, hard, introspective conversation with yourself that it is never going to be easier to be great at your job. And be okay with that realization.

And I hope – deep in my soul – that accepting the fact that it is never going to be easier energizes you. You were not put on this Earth to be average. None of us were. You have chosen to be a part of the best profession in the world. We have the opportunity to change lives every single day. It is an awesome responsibility, but an even more incredible opportunity.
